The Security Guard Who Won the Heart of the Unattainable Actress - Chapter 29.1
Chapter 29.1
As she stood by the window, the fine raindrops beat against Ran Mingyue’s cheeks, and her skin felt numb from the cold.
Before hearing Li Guang’s voice in her earpiece, Ran Mingyue thought she had lost all feeling. She didn’t feel cold or pain, just numbness.
It was her habitual protection, a familiar defense mechanism she used when she felt she couldn’t accomplish something. Ran Mingyue knew this wasn’t very high.
She had jumped from higher places before. Back then, there were no worried eyes watching her from below.
There was no retreat, so she could only go down or up.
But with Li Guang watching her, Li Guang gave her a third option: to give up.
Only then did Ran Mingyue realize that she, too, could be weak.
When filming, Ran Mingyue could rigidly close off her inner world to perfectly complete her work. She couldn’t hold up the progress of others.
When she returned to her hotel, and those defense mechanisms left her body and she was alone, she could only throw up over the toilet.
In places without spotlights, fans, or anyone to keep her company, Ran Mingyue could only face the pain alone.
But today was different.
With Li Guang here, Ran Mingyue knew she didn’t have to pretend so well.
She was scared, afraid of heights, afraid to leap down. Her fear had been seen.
For a long time, Ran Mingyue had been in a very high position. Her early supporting roles were still used as acting textbooks.
With five projects in five years, Ran Mingyue’s status in the industry was unparalleled. Everyone naturally assumed that Ran Mingyue could do anything, already had everything, and was living a happy and indestructible life.
Amidst everyone’s shouts for her to jump, Ran Mingyue felt like a balloon that had been blown up to its breaking point. If she jumped, a long, thin needle would be waiting for her on that crash mat, waiting to pop her.
Ran Mingyue thought Li Guang would also encourage her, telling her she would catch her below.
Ran Mingyue had rehearsed such words in her head countless times.
But Li Guang didn’t say that.
At that moment, Li Guang’s eyes were soft yet firm, as if they could withstand any collapse. She was like a gentle blanket, wrapping a wet person in a bright inner world.
Ran Mingyue’s precarious inner world was once again gently steadied by Li Guang.
“Countdown, five.”
“Four.”
“Three.”
In Li Guang’s earpiece, the countdown was crystal clear.
When it reached “three,” her personal channel was closed.
“Two.”
At the same time, Ran Mingyue bowed to everyone’s expectant eyes. “I can’t do it. I’m sorry.”
“One.”
After she spoke, a huge explosion from the second floor startled everyone. It also meant that the hunt team’s mission had failed. After the sound, Ran Mingyue crouched down and disappeared from the window.
The wall was a blaze of firelight, but her figure was gone.
“Li Guang, stay where you are,” Wang Rou said to Li Guang in her earpiece. “Ran Mingyue is fine, that’s a projection—Li Guang! Li Guang! The staff passage door will lock after being opened once! Li Guang! Do you hear me?”
“Is that the door? Hey, hey, hey? 06 is so fast!” Just as Jiang Qiaoye finished speaking, Li Guang had already shot forward like an arrow from a bow.
Li Guang still used the staff passage. She pulled out her earpiece and pretended she couldn’t hear any instructions.
A projection? Did they not think that Ran Mingyue would be scared to face it alone?
She had said she would be the first to come and get her.
Li Guang opened the small door and rushed to Ran Mingyue.
“Sister Mingyue!” Li Guang came in a hurry. She guessed right. Ran Mingyue had been scared by the explosion and had stumbled and fallen against the wall.
Li Guang didn’t care about anything else. She bent her knees and knelt in front of Ran Mingyue, not caring how disheveled she looked.
“I’ve come to get you.” The crackling sound of the burning door filled the air. Li Guang’s nerves were on edge. She tried to ignore the burnt, awful smell. All her strength was in her hands, helping her body lift Ran Mingyue up.
“I’ve come to get you.” Seeing Ran Mingyue’s dazed expression, Li Guang repeated in a low voice, “Let’s go. I’ll take you out.”
Her clothes were dirty again. There was black soot on the knees of her pants, but she didn’t notice. Ran Mingyue’s face was also smudged with dirt. She stared at Li Guang for a long time, and the corners of her eyes suddenly turned red.
Li Guang was scared, too! Her fingers were trembling. Li Guang’s grip was tight, and Ran Mingyue felt it even more.
But she kept her promise and really came to get her.
Li Guang helped Ran Mingyue stand up, letting Ran Mingyue put her full weight on her. She led Ran Mingyue toward the door.
Li Guang pursed her lips, not taking too long to think. She looked at the door that had been burning since she and the members of Ran Mingyue’s team had entered.
It was burning while giving off a smell.
The door’s temperature was also very high, especially when all of them were pressing against it to keep the NPCs out. At this point, Li Guang was basically certain that the door was made of a special material and wouldn’t actually burn through. The production team must have tested it.
What the production team wanted was the drama, for the players to overcome their inner obstacles.
“Li Guang, forget it. Don’t do it. The game is over. We should be able to get out once it’s done burning.”
How could Ran Mingyue not know that Li Guang seemed to dislike fire? When the missions involved fire, Li Guang’s state was noticeably worse than before.
The person who was afraid was even more afraid that Ran Mingyue would be in danger. She had come to save her after being all alone.
Ran Mingyue was both happy and pained. She didn’t want Li Guang to take on this big risk.
Li Guang shook her head.
She took off her jacket, doing it cleanly and without hesitation. Before Ran Mingyue could react, she pushed her aside. “Stand back. Don’t come over.”
Li Guang used her jacket to completely cover and bind her hands and forearms. With a resolute look in her eyes, she rushed toward the crackling door.
Bang!
When the high temperature made contact with the clothes, a strong, pungent smell filled the air. With Li Guang’s full-force impact, the door gave way.
Li Guang’s face was streaked with dirt. Her normally pale complexion was flushed. Her body and face were covered in soot.
“Let’s go.” Li Guang reached out her hand. Ran Mingyue took it, her thumb gently rubbing Li Guang’s fingers, hoping it would help Li Guang overcome her fear. “Thank you, Li Guang.”
Li Guang shook her head, feeling as though she was now helping Ran Mingyue escape for real.
She didn’t even know how she had managed to knock down that door. It was all from a belief that she absolutely had to protect Ran Mingyue and bring her out.
Ran Mingyue followed Li Guang downstairs. Everyone else was already waiting outside.
Li Guang looked back at the door and saw that, just as she had thought, it wasn’t a normal door. It had been specially treated by the production team. Only that one door was burning.
She looked down at her jacket. It was ruined. Some parts had burn holes.
She tried to shake her hand, and she could still feel the scorching heat on her skin.
After running downstairs, Li Guang let go of Ran Mingyue’s hand.
“Li Guang…”
Li Guang lowered her head. “It’s good that you’re out. You weren’t too scared, were you?”
“Xiao Li! Get over here!” Chai Ning was sent by Wang Rou to call Li Guang. He looked genuinely scared. “Hurry up and get a new uniform!”
Her clothes were burned.
Li Guang could only go with Chai Ning. She took the clothes Chai Ning had brought her, and when she looked up, she had her usual smiling eyes. “I’m so sorry. I actually ruined a new uniform in one show. What a waste.”
“You! You really scared us just now. If Sister Wang hadn’t told us that the door was a special material and the temperature was controlled, you’d be in the hospital right now!”
“Okay, okay, I know… I just wanted to get Teacher Ran out.” Li Guang knew she was in the wrong and humbly listened to her senior’s lecture. “I didn’t block Sister Mingyue from the cameras, did I?”
“No. The production team will edit the footage themselves. No, why are you still thinking about that…” Chai Ning was impressed by Li Guang’s carefree attitude. “The live stream ends in half an hour. It’s been a tough day at work.”
Li Guang said, “It has.”
She turned her gaze to the area.
After she had brought Ran Mingyue down, the other guests crowded around. She and Ran Mingyue didn’t have time to talk.
Ran Mingyue also quickly adjusted her state. The shock, panic, and suppressed fear were gone. She returned to her teammates, and her first words were an apology.
“It’s my fault. Our team could have won. I’m sorry,” Ran Mingyue said. “I couldn’t overcome my mental hurdle.”
“It’s okay, it’s okay! As long as you’re okay, that’s all that matters. There’s no need to apologize. Teacher Ran has had so many brilliant moments, this doesn’t matter,” Hua Yuzhi quickly waved her hands. “Yingzhi said that you never liked heights, and this mission was a bit too much for you.”
Xiang Que said, “Yes. Don’t put so much pressure on yourself. We all still think you’re the best captain!”
Jiang Qiaoye also put away his usual grin and came to Ran Mingyue’s side. “I’m the one who should be sorry. I didn’t scare you during the game, did I? Sister Ran, you can beat me up or hit me right now. I tricked you during the game because it’s not easy for our escape team to win.”
Ran Mingyue waved her hand.
“Are you still in a daze?” Wen Yingzhi watched Ran Mingyue for a while. After everyone else had finished speaking, she came and squeezed Ran Mingyue’s shoulder. “Don’t think about it. It’s all over. Today’s filming is almost done. The bang of the door falling down scared all of us below! You’re so fierce, aren’t you?”
After talking to the production team downstairs, Wen Yingzhi had found out that the door on the second floor would only open after it was completely burned, and the timing didn’t align with the end of the game announcement, so it had to be delayed for five more minutes.
Ran Mingyue was fine staying up there for five minutes alone. It wasn’t a real fire, so no one had to worry. The flames on the wall were just projections the production team had placed there for realism.
In reality, everyone was scared after that incident. They knew it was a special material, but they were still afraid of something going wrong. They’d rather wait below.
But Li Guang had rushed up and even knocked the door down. She was incredibly strong and fearless. If it had been anyone else, they wouldn’t have dared to go back in there after seeing that burning door.
Not long after Li Guang had knocked down the door, the door burning in the courtyard also died down.
Everyone could return to the base camp.
“It wasn’t me. It was my security guard who opened the door and let me out,” Ran Mingyue said, her voice still weak. “If it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t have been able to get out.”
Having Li Guang there with her made all the difference, both in her mental state and physically.
Even though it was still raining outside, her heart was no longer raining.
Ran Mingyue thought that after the show, she had to have a good talk with Li Guang.
To protect her, Li Guang had pretended to be calm. Ran Mingyue knew that Li Guang was also scared. She had stood in front of that door, ready to protect her without a hint of hesitation.
Wang Rou said, “Everyone has worked hard to complete the mission. You can now return to the base camp villa. The live stream cameras will be temporarily closed. We will start again at the same time tomorrow. Thank you, everyone!”
“It’s just over?????”
“No, no! I strongly suggest we watch tonight too! I’m willing to pay more money, can’t I? Ugh!”
“I can’t believe they lost just like that.”
“Me too. The hunt team was a sure win, so it’s a real shame they lost just because she didn’t jump.”
“Stop arguing. Can’t my wife be scared? Could you jump down from the second floor without any psychological burden? ”
“Come on. Are we talking about fear now? Everyone else said they would jump and they all jumped. You’re still defending Ran Mingyue for being the only one who didn’t? You say she’s scared, but in her past movies, Ran Mingyue had plenty of high-altitude shots. Why wasn’t she scared then? Is it because the production team didn’t pay her enough this time?”
“That’s so funny. What kind of heartless comment is that? If I told you to go and die now, would you really go and die?”
“I don’t want to get involved in your arguments. All I know is that when the security guard rushed up and helped Teacher Ran out, I was already shipping them.”
“Shipping everything will give you a nutritional overdose! Pineapple Channel won’t produce shipping material between guests and staff. She was clearly just doing her job.”
“I just think that when Teacher Ran was up there, the look she gave Teacher Xiang Que was so worried. That was real!”
“I ship Ran Mingyue with everyone! That staff member was great. When she went up there, I thought it was really going to explode!”
As the guests walked to the base camp, Wen Yingzhi said, “All those strawberry people were burned to death, but I figured out what their trigger word was.”
“‘Blackhead’… the trigger word,” Ran Mingyue said. “Hua Yuzhi and I figured it out.”
“How did you figure it out? Weren’t we all locked in at the same time?” Wen Yingzhi said. “Oh! Blackhead, because of the strawberry seeds… The production team is so playful again.”
Ran Mingyue nodded distractedly.
Her peripheral vision was scanning the area, looking for that familiar figure.
Li Guang only had two uniforms. The new one was burned, and the old one was already changed out. Now she was wearing one a colleague had brought for her.
The one-meter-eight size jacket made Li Guang’s shoulders look wide, but her face and tall stature pulled it off, making it look like an oversized silhouette.
Even though the fans were reluctant to leave, they all said goodbye to the people as they returned to the base camp, and the production team turned off the live stream.
The guests all let out a sigh of relief. However, even when the live stream was not on, the cameramen were still working. They were still filming outside the live stream. These clips would be added to the production team’s editing library. Some would become part of the main show, and some would become extra content.
“It’s finally over!” Jiang Qiaoye collapsed on the sofa and sighed with relief. “I don’t want to move.”
The others also agreed.
It was now three in the afternoon. They had been filming since seven in the morning, with no breaks in between. The high-intensity running and chasing were enough to exhaust even an iron man.
Wang Rou said, “Everyone has worked hard. You can all go back to your rooms to rest this afternoon. Come down for dinner later.”
The crowd cheered, and the living room was immediately half empty. During the official filming, everyone decided to rest here today.
Hua Yuzhi came over and quietly asked, “Sister Ran, are there any snail rice noodles left?”
“Huh?” Ran Mingyue nodded. “But wait a minute, I have to ask first.”
Hua Yuzhi was really craving it. She had to ask if the owner of the snail rice noodles agreed to contribute another packet. But after looking around, she couldn’t find Li Guang anywhere.
“Where’s my security guard?” Ran Mingyue asked a camera PD.
“She’s not here. She went to clean up the villa with the production team.”
