- The Scummy Alpha Who Transmigrated Into a Book Was Tricked by the Actress Omega
- Chapter 51 - Du Wan
Probably, no matter how old a girl is, she can’t resist someone who shelters her from the wind and rain, goes all out for her, or even builds the castle of her dreams like peering into her thoughts and creating a harbor where she can dock.
And for Du Zuilan, the one doing all this for her now, the one treating her so well, is none other than Yan Xunzhen standing before her.
Yan Xunzhen’s voice carried a faint trace of amusement, tinged with helpless fondness. She took out another wet wipe and gently wiped away the tear stains on Du Zuilan’s face. “Why are you crying again? You shouldn’t cry so much on your birthday.”
The corners of Du Zuilan’s eyes were still red, her fair face flushed with warmth. She didn’t respond to Yan Xunzhen’s words but instead murmured softly, like a feather brushing by, “I love it. I really love it.”
When she was insulted, when she was threatened by that scumbag Alpha, when she faced any hardship she would endure it all, never crying, never admitting defeat. Even her tears were merely a tactic to soften others and achieve her goals.
But this time, she truly cried because of Yan Xunzhen.
No schemes, no ulterior motives just pure, overwhelming happiness that spilled over in tears when she felt loved.
“As long as you love it,” Yan Xunzhen said softly, smoothing her hair. Du Zuilan finally calmed down after a brief sob, quickly composing herself. “Well then, my dear shop owner, would you like to go inside and sell me an ice cream?”
Still slightly nasal, Du Zuilan chuckled and gave a soft “Mm,” tugging at Yan Xunzhen’s sleeve as they walked into the shop together.
The door of the ice cream shop was exquisitely crafted, though in the amusement park, it was more for show than practicality, given the additional security measures in place.
But the key in Du Zuilan’s hand could really open it. With a crisp “click,” like perfectly fitting mortise and tenon, the path inside swung open.
Du Yeqing circled back from the outer area, her eyes sparkling with excitement as she took in the grand, beautiful ice cream shop. She was about to pull her sister inside when she noticed the faint redness at the corners of Du Zuilan’s eyes. With the seriousness of a child wise beyond her years, she demanded, “Sister! Why are you crying? Who bullied you?”
Ruffling her little sister’s hair, Du Zuilan smiled gently. “Good Yeqing, no one bullied me.”
Someone was just too good to me.
Du Zuilan coaxed her, “The food earlier was too spicy, and I accidentally got some in my eyes. So now I need ice cream. Do you want some too, Yeqing?”
“Yes, yes!”
Inside the ice cream shop sat a foreign shopkeeper who resembled the one they had seen in Rongguo. Spotting Yan Xunzhen, he greeted her in slightly broken Chinese, “Yan, good afternoon.”
“Good afternoon,” Yan Xunzhen replied in Chinese before switching to Rongguo’s language to continue, “This is the owner of the shop from now on. Please take good care of her.”
The foreigner nodded in understanding and swiftly scooped out a rich, creamy vanilla ice cream from the prepared tub, handing it to the youngest, Du Yeqing.
Then, he moved to the sweet, pretty strawberry flavor, serving it in an elegant cup before presenting it to Du Zuilan beside her. His words were still a bit clumsy: “Miss, wish you happy birthday. Hope you both have joyful day.”
Du Zuilan’s eyes sparkled slightly as she took the item from the shop owner with a gentle smile, her voice soft: “Thank you.”
Yan Xunzhen also accepted a cup from him, and the two of them sat by the window together, facing the murmuring stream outside and the distant winding roller coaster in the distance.
Little Du Yeqing also had a sweet tooth, especially for beautifully packaged desserts, which she couldn’t resist at all. She scooped up spoonful after spoonful with her small spoon, then offered a big scoop to her sister: “I want to share with my sister!”
Du Zuilan took a small taste with a smile, lightly licking the cream from her lips before saying to Yeqing, “You should also share with Sister Yan. It was Sister Yan who treated you, so what should you say?”
Du Yeqing scooped up another big spoonful and offered it to Yan Xunzhen, earnestly saying, “Sister Yan should have some too. I want to thank Sister Yan!”
Yan Xunzhen praised her: “So well-behaved.”
Du Zuilan also smiled, her eyes curving with evident happiness.
Yan Xunzhen then said to her, “Later, Yeqing can choose any ride she wants in the amusement park, and you won’t have to wait in line. Just be careful, okay?”
Yeqing cheered: “Yay!”
After finishing her ice cream and seeing her sister nod in agreement, Du Yeqing immediately dashed ahead like a joyful little bird.
The two left behind walked side by side. Du Zuilan’s voice carried a rare note of happiness, her eyes crinkling with joy: “It’s been a long time since I’ve been to an amusement park. I’m really happy.”
Yan Xunzhen’s lips curled slightly in response: “If you like it, we can put everything under your name.”
Du Zuilan, unusually, showed a lively smile that suited her age: “What I mean is, I hope we can come here together again in the future.”
“Me too,” Yan Xunzhen replied softly, tucking a stray lock of hair behind Du Zuilan’s ear.
Du Yeqing called out loudly from ahead. Du Zuilan chuckled and hurried after her. Yan Xunzhen was about to follow when the manager, who had been waiting for an opportunity, finally seized the moment to stop her.
Yan Xunzhen paused, signaled to Du Zuilan, and then walked aside with the manager.
The manager looked flustered, beads of sweat on his forehead. Seeing Yan Xunzhen in such high spirits, he hesitated, feeling as though he’d been thrown into boiling water either way, he was doomed. “President Yan, I’ve completed the investigation you requested earlier.”
Yan Xunzhen’s expression darkened slightly: “Go on.”
The manager wiped the sweat from his brow and handed the documents to Yan Xunzhen. As a trusted aide, he decided to be direct and steeled himself: “Miss Du’s family background is a bit complicated. Her mother-in-law fell ill from anger after recently learning the truth about her daughter’s marriage to that man.”
The original novel hadn’t mentioned this layer. Without an omniscient perspective, Yan Xunzhen had only pieced together clues that hinted at hidden truths, but she never imagined the truth would be so painful. Before even hearing the rest, her fingers clenched tightly around the documents.
Her eyes skimmed through the lines rapidly, yet the manager’s voice lingered in her ears: “Later, I managed to uncover some details by focusing on key figures primarily that scum of a father. Back then, Du’s mother was renowned far and wide for her beauty. As a young girl, her dream was to become an actress. But just before she was about to apply to film school.”
Yan Xunyi’s throat felt parched as she uttered, “That’s enough.”
Why would a beautiful young woman, in the prime of her youth, abandon her dream of acting overnight? And not long after, hastily marry a man she barely knew, only to give birth to a daughter just two months later?
Yan Xunyi didn’t want to dwell on it further. Otherwise, she feared she might see Du Zuilan’s reflection in her mother’s story except…
Du Zuilan’s mother wasn’t as fortunate. No matter how much she loathed the man who ruined her life, she couldn’t escape that cage. The world was entirely different nearly two decades ago. Back then, if she had tried to prove herself a victim, it would have been harder than reaching the heavens.
Yet she never took her anger toward men out on her daughter.
She was grateful her daughter was an omega, so much like her in appearance so adorable, so small. How could she burden her with her own rage? That would be far too unfair.
She named her daughter Zuilan.
Like a flower struggling to rise from the muck, just as it began to heal, just as it squeezed out the poisoned blood from its broken stem, the woman was violated once more during a violent argument.
She didn’t laugh, nor did she cry. Staring at her thirteen-year-old daughter, still in her first year of middle school, she was overwhelmed with terror.
The woman gave birth again, this time naming her daughter “Yeqing.”
Pure in origin, pure in departure.
Watching her elder daughter delight in the tiny new life of her sister, she caught a fleeting glimpse of herself in the girl. As if guided by a mother’s intuition, she sensed her daughter’s path ahead would be fraught with hardship. With a sigh, she rested her hand atop her daughter’s head.
The innocent, unknowing gaze of her daughter brought her heart a rare moment of peace.
Lying on the hospital bed, she smiled tenderly as her daughter, on her own birthday, presented her with a handmade card meant for her mother instead.
She held her daughter’s hand and whispered, “Happy birthday, my dear.”
“Listen to Mom. Go live with Grandma. Protect yourself.”
A flicker of confusion passed over Du Zuilan’s still-childish, fair face. The card in her mother’s hand fluttered like a butterfly’s wing, as if ready to carry her mother away.
“Mom is sorry, sorry to you, and to Yeqing. I couldn’t protect you, couldn’t give you a proper home.”
Shaking her head, Du Zuilan’s tears fell in heavy drops. Her school uniform felt like shackles as she frantically pressed the hospital call button. “Mom!”
Du Wan gently grasped her daughter’s hand, her voice so soft the final words dissolved into silence. “I’m sorry my child, for making your birthday so painful for making your whole life.”
With a quiet thud, Du Wan’s hand went limp, lifelessly resting by the bedside.
Her life had been too bitter, and she left this world too soon. She had a slight regret that she never appeared on screen, but her greatest regret was not being able to see her daughter fulfill her dreams.
Yan Xunzhen felt a lump in her throat, momentarily at a loss for words. She could only turn to the manager beside her and instruct, “Secure all the documents with the highest level of protection. No one else must be able to access this information.”
The manager nodded hesitantly, clutching the documents as he hurried off to destroy them.
Yan Xunzhen gazed at the figure in pale green in the distance, silently making a resolution in her heart.
To protect you as you bloom through all seasons, while I lose myself in the time of your flowering.
