- Chapter 22 - The Misunderstanding
Where their gazes met, it was as if sparks flew; both could see the uncontrollable anger and resentment burning in each other’s eyes!
Yao Zhenzhen’s eyes darted quickly, like a cunning fox, staring intently at the red “In Progress” sign of the operating room door. Suddenly, a flash of inspiration hit her. Her lips curled upward into a chilling, somber smile.
“I think we can use the opportunity of Dad being hospitalized to let the netizens see Yao Anna’s true face, that b*tch!” Yao Zhenzhen spat out every word through gritted teeth, her tone dripping with venom and hatred.
Zheng Xiulan instantly grasped Yao Zhenzhen’s intent. She bit her back molars and nodded slightly in agreement. At that moment, she realized that while this crushing defeat had dealt a heavy blow to Yao Zhenzhen, it had also forced her to grow up quickly—she was becoming smarter and more calculating.
The current Yao Zhenzhen was no longer solely dependent on Yao Guangming to bully and suppress Yao Anna; she had learned to plan independently and take the initiative. Overall, Zheng Xiulan sensed clearly that her daughter was becoming far more sophisticated and shrewder.
Suddenly, a series of crisp, rhythmic footsteps echoed from the end of the hallway.
Curious, Zheng Xiulan and Yao Zhenzhen looked toward the sound. They saw a tall, elegantly moving figure walking slowly toward them. It was Jiang Nian’an. Her expression was cold and refined, radiating the aura of a natural-born leader.
As a powerful Alpha, Jiang Nian’an possessed a chilling presence that was impossible to ignore. Her nearly perfect face carried an innate authority, as if the entire world were under her control.
Seeing Jiang Nian’an walking toward her like a descending goddess, Yao Zhenzhen’s heart began to pound. Her eyes followed Jiang Nian’an’s every move.
She truly loved Jiang Nian’an. Otherwise, she wouldn’t be so desperate to eliminate Yao Anna and take her place. Why wasn’t she the one engaged to Jiang Nian’an? Was it really just because she was born six months later than Yao Anna?!
Her gaze instantly became hazy, completely immersed in her infatuation with Jiang Nian’an.
If not for this unspoken affection, she wouldn’t have gone to such lengths to remove the obstacle known as Yao Anna. Yet, she had faced defeat after defeat. Not only had she failed to snatch the diamond dress, but she had also lost the female lead role and had a bucket of “dirty water” splashed on her reputation.
This unprecedented failure fueled Yao Zhenzhen’s resentment. She felt she was not inferior to Yao Anna—perhaps even superior. But reality had ruthlessly beaten her down time and again, causing her immense pain and indignation.
Jiang Nian’an did not notice Yao Zhenzhen’s inner turmoil. She stopped about a meter away.
“How is Uncle?” Jiang Nian’an looked up at the red light of the operating room, her brow furrowing slightly. She looked down at the mother and daughter; seeing their haggard and worried expressions, she felt a rare flicker of pity.
Regardless of the circumstances, Yao Anna had truly gone too far this time. No matter what, Yao Guangming was her biological father. How could she provoke the old man so much that he ended up in the operating room?
To say such rebellious things… Jiang Nian’an was a person who valued filial piety and responsibility. She could not understand Yao Anna’s defiance toward her father. Had she not seen it with her own eyes, she wouldn’t have believed that Yao Guangming could be reduced to such a pathetic state—rushed to the emergency room for life-saving surgery.
Of course, her sympathy was rooted in the fact that Yao Zhenzhen had once saved her life. Had they been strangers, she wouldn’t have bothered to visit the hospital at all.
Zheng Xiulan looked distressed. She shook her head and sighed. “We don’t know yet. I just hope Old Yao can get through this crisis!”
Jiang Nian’an pursed her lips. Unsure how to comfort them, she nodded slightly and said in a deep voice, “Mr. Yao will be fine.”
“Sister Nian’an…”
Hearing the voice, Jiang Nian’an looked over. Yao Zhenzhen’s face was as pale as paper, looking pitiful and fragile. Jiang Nian’an’s heart softened, and her cold voice turned much gentler.
“What is it?”
Yao Zhenzhen stood up from the bench, walked to Jiang Nian’an’s side, and suddenly reached out to grasp her warm right hand. Her eyes flickered as if she were about to say something.
Jiang Nian’an’s eyes sharpened, and she instinctively tried to pull her hand away.
Talk if you must, but why the physical contact? Don’t you know there’s a boundary between Alphas and Omegas?!
Just then, a sharp “Click!” sounded. The crimson light that had been glowing above the door suddenly died out, and the tightly shut operating room doors slowly swung open.
A group of nurses in blue scrubs emerged, pushing a gurney. Lying upon it was Yao Guangming, his eyes tightly shut, unconscious and in a state of deep coma.
Seeing this, Zheng Xiulan rushed forward, crying out, “Old Yao! Old Yao!” Her voice was thick with genuine anxiety and concern.
A doctor in a white coat slowly removed his surgical mask and spoke softly to remind her: “Mr. Yao is still unconscious. Please remain quiet. Also, hospital regulations strictly forbid shouting in the hallways. Mrs. Yao, let us move him back to the ward so he can rest properly.”
Hearing the doctor’s words, Zheng Xiulan stopped shouting, though her eyes remained glued to Yao Guangming in worry. Eventually, she nodded and stepped aside, allowing the nurses to pass with the gurney.
As the gurney passed Yao Zhenzhen, she saw Yao Guangming’s weak and haggard face. A pang of heartache hit her, and her grip on Jiang Nian’an’s hand tightened involuntarily.
Jiang Nian’an glanced sideways. Yao Zhenzhen’s eyes were rimmed with red, brimming with tears she seemed to be struggling to hold back. It was a sight that would make any Alpha feel protective; even the normally stoic Jiang Nian’an felt a touch of reluctance to pull away.
“Sister Nian’an.”
Hearing the sob in Yao Zhenzhen’s voice, Jiang Nian’an—who feared women’s tears most of all—hurriedly comforted her: “Alright, stay strong. Let’s go ask the doctor for the details.”
“Mhm, okay. I’ll listen to you.”
Yao Zhenzhen wiped the tears from her face and nodded obediently, following the Alpha toward the doctor.
Jiang Nian’an took the opportunity to withdraw her hand and quickly stuffed it into her pocket, fearing Yao Zhenzhen might try to grab it again.
After all, Alphas and Omegas should keep their distance. Moreover, Yao Anna disliked Yao Zhenzhen and had a huge grievance against her. If Yao Anna saw this, Jiang Nian’an felt she wouldn’t be able to clear her name even if she jumped into the Yellow River.
“Are you all Mr. Yao’s family members?” The doctor glanced at the three of them while flipping through a medical file.
Zheng Xiulan nodded vigorously and explained, “Yes. These two are my second daughter and my son-in-law. We are all family here, no outsiders. Dr. Li, please don’t keep me in suspense. Tell me quickly, how is Old Yao? I am worried sick!”
Once the doctor understood the relationships, he spoke calmly: “Mrs. Yao, don’t worry. Mr. Yao’s condition was caused by extreme emotional distress leading to a ‘flare-up of internal fire,’ which triggered a relapse of his old ailment. Fortunately, he was brought in time. After emergency treatment, he is out of danger. He just needs to rest quietly for a while to recover.”
“However, be careful with his emotions in the future. Don’t let him get so angry,” the doctor added.
“That’s wonderful!” Hearing this, the weight on Zheng Xiulan’s heart finally lifted. She exhaled a long breath of relief, and her furrowed brows relaxed.
“As long as he’s okay… thank you so much, Doctor!” Zheng Xiulan couldn’t hide her joy and gratitude, thanking the doctor repeatedly.
The doctor waved it off and habitually handed the medical chart to Jiang Nian’an. However, Jiang Nian’an didn’t take it.
“?”
The doctor looked at her in confusion. “Aren’t you Mr. Yao’s son-in-law? Go pay the fees for your father-in-law. The old gentleman needs to stay under observation for a few days!”
As he spoke, the doctor glanced at Yao Zhenzhen standing beside the Alpha. Zheng Xiulan raised an eyebrow and exchanged a look with Yao Zhenzhen. Both then looked at the silent Jiang Nian’an. They realized the doctor seemed to have misunderstood something.
Jiang Nian’an frowned. She also felt something was off. In a sense, since Yao Anna was Yao Guangming’s biological daughter, she was technically his future son-in-law. But because Yao Anna wasn’t here and Yao Zhenzhen was the one standing next to her, the situation felt incredibly awkward.
It must be a misunderstanding, she thought.
“Alright.”
Jiang Nian’an took the chart and headed toward the payment counter on the first floor. Once she left, the doctor said with a smile, “Mrs. Yao, you’ve found a good son-in-law. Handsome and imposing. Looking at the clothes and the watch, the family must be very wealthy, right?”
Dr. Li was an old acquaintance of Zheng Xiulan—they were high school classmates. He had personally performed Yao Guangming’s heart surgery previously, which had been a success.
Zheng Xiulan froze for a moment, then pursed her lips. She realized that Dr. Li had indeed misunderstood the situation!
“Actually, she isn’t…”
