The late August morning carried a thin, sparse coolness. A grayish-brown, plump bird hopped on a nearly bare branch, its small, bean-sized eyes watching the area ahead. Then, as if startled, it squawked, wildly flapping its stubby wings and carrying its plump body away from the branch at a speed that contradicted its size.

“Two-Bit, get back here!” Bai Xi stood beneath the tree with her hands on her hips, looking up at the plump yet agile Maine Coon cat in the branches.
