- Chapter 9 - The Forthright Person
After class in the morning, the crowd surged, but Xu Qingfeng was in no hurry to eat today. The scenery of early autumn was worth taking the time to appreciate.
She walked quietly alone, passing the narrow path leading to the cafeteria. Looking up, she saw a few blooming wisteria flowers on the trellis—a good place to escape the sun.
In the past, this was a color of loss and sorrow, but today I realized I had misunderstood it.
Purple is romantic and elegant, making me want to explore its mystery.
Xu Qingfeng was a narcissistic person; seemingly dull, yet within her core was the melancholy of a literati sighing over the passage of time. She lamented the changes in things, but in reality, it was because of her unspeakable desires. Her hidden thoughts took root and sprouted in the dark, hoping the sunlight would one day embrace them.
Inside the cafeteria, Liang Hao had found a spot with Xia Yiqiu. As soon as they sat down, she noticed her deskmate looking into the distance.
Xu Qingfeng was looking for a seat. She arrived late, and most seats were taken. Even if a four-person table only had two people, people usually wouldn’t cut in to avoid mutual awkwardness, unless they truly couldn’t find a spot.
Liang Hao was pained.
Oh, this Xia Yiqiu, what’s the use of just looking? She’s been looking for a year. Now that there’s finally a hint of progress, she should strike while the iron is hot and quickly call her over.
Alas, it still falls to me.
Liang Hao felt her responsibility was immense.
“Oh, Yiqiu, isn’t that the Vice President?” Liang Hao feigned just noticing her.
“Yes, she seems to have no place to sit.” Xia Yiqiu was conflicted. Even though she had so many interactions with Xu Qingfeng these past few days, her former habit of distant observation still controlled her thoughts.
If I invite her directly, will she be willing?
Do I really want to disturb her peaceful life?
Liang Hao watched her deskmate’s conflicted expression and sighed, “My ship has sailed.”
She was usually such a forthright person; she can still have moments like this.
Xia Yiqiu’s inner thoughts had long been discovered by Liang Hao. She was frustrated by her indecision; that top student from the next class clearly liked her too.
It’s truly that the participants are confused while the bystanders are clear. But she really had no reason to break the vague feelings between the two, as so far, it was only her sixth sense.
Putting all other thoughts aside, she stood up and greeted Xu Qingfeng, who was still looking for a seat.
“Vice President, come and sit here quickly!” Her voice was not small. At first, Xu Qingfeng didn’t think she was calling her; the title was still a bit unfamiliar to her.
It shouldn’t be me, right?
But Liang Hao’s call attracted the attention of most people, and Xu Qingfeng also looked in the direction of the sound.
It was a member of the Drama Club, and also Xia Yiqiu’s deskmate. With over a hundred people in the Psychology Club, it was unrealistic to remember everyone in just a few days, but it was the latter identity that made Xu Qingfeng firmly remember this person.
Looking at the person sitting opposite Liang Hao, she was quietly and gently gazing at Xu Qingfeng. Liang Hao’s invitation was like a sound from heaven. Xu Qingfeng could not control her legs and walked forward step by step.
“Thank you.” Xu Qingfeng sincerely thanked Liang Hao and sat down next to Xia Yiqiu.
See? This is the way to go. Liang Hao inwardly praised her quick thinking.
“Vice President, you’re being too polite. Your relationship with Yiqiu is so good, you’re all friends!”
Liang Hao said it very naturally and boldly, with a hint of an old-fashioned Hong Kong accent, but she was about to lose control of herself.
I really want to post this in the group chat!!!
Xia Yiqiu looked up at her friend and laughed, “Haha.” She couldn’t help but admire her.
Liang Hao’s quick-witted social skills explained why she said she had already mingled with most of the club members.
Seeing Xia Yiqiu’s smile, Xu Qingfeng thought this quirky girl was excellent.
She thought to herself,
So, in her friend’s eyes, my relationship with Yiqiu is already very good.
Does Yiqiu think so too?
She could hardly believe such a thought was forming.
The three people, each with their own thoughts, began to eat and chat.
“Vice President, you eat at the cafeteria for lunch too?” Liang Hao felt her ability to tell white lies was getting better and better.
“Yes, it’s quite troublesome to go home for lunch.” Although Xu Qingfeng had already bought a bicycle, she was long accustomed to studying and reading in the library during her lunch break.
“I think so too.” Xia Yiqiu didn’t lie. Although her home was nearby and she occasionally went back after lunch,
Her parents were away all year, and she had the housekeeper Aunt Li for company, but how could that compare to eating and chatting with friends? The cafeteria food wasn’t bad either.
In fact, the main reason was that she couldn’t bear to let Liang Hao eat alone. Friendship and companionship are sometimes just that simple and unpretentious.
“Then why don’t we eat together every lunchtime from now on?” The tension in Liang Hao’s heart finally released, and she had finally said it.
“That sounds great. What do you think, Qingfeng?” Xia Yiqiu looked into her eyes.
“Okay.” Xu Qingfeng didn’t overthink it. After blurting it out, the matter was settled.
It was rare for Xu Qingfeng to eat with others, whether at home or school. She once wished her parents would spend more time with her, but gradually she got used to solitude. This solitary nature kept her distant from everyone except her childhood friend, Gao Zhi.
The three talked and laughed together. Xu Qingfeng looked at Xia Yiqiu beside her. Actually, being this close to her right now is good enough.
People shouldn’t be too greedy, Xu Qingfeng thought.
After eating, all three planned to go to the library. Xu Qingfeng wanted to read the book she hadn’t finished last time. Xia Yiqiu planned to do the same, and Liang Hao was heading to the study room on the other side of the library.
In fact, Xia Yiqiu also used to spend her lunch break with Liang Hao in the library, only she was in the reading room reading books, and Liang Hao was studying in the study room.
The reading room was quite large, but only Xu Qingfeng, that dedicated bookworm, failed to notice her for an entire year.
Liang Hao often complained about Xia Yiqiu’s natural talent. She felt sorry for herself, who had to study early and late every day, yet was only 11th in the science stream. She vowed to make it into the top ten next time.
Liang Hao parted ways with them near the library since the path to the study room was different from the reading room.
Xu Qingfeng and Xia Yiqiu were alone again.
“Yiqiu, what kind of books do you usually like to read?” Xu Qingfeng was curious.
“I’ve been reading The Three-Body Problem recently.” Xia Yiqiu was more interested in science fiction. She had spent so much time in the reading room this past year that she was almost a bookworm herself, always carrying a few extra-curricular books in her bag.
“I like science fiction too, but my favorite is history.” Xu Qingfeng’s eyes lit up when she talked about history, and she spoke fluently. Her eyes were full of anticipation for the future; she wanted to become a history teacher.
Xia Yiqiu listened quietly beside her. The early autumn sun was not scorching. The weeping willows by the lake swayed, and people strolling by watched their beloved.
Just as they were about to enter the library, a girl blocked their way.
“Are you the president of the Psychology Club?” She seemed nervous, and her tone was not very calm.
“Yes, may I help you?” Xia Yiqiu replied.
The reason she wasn’t surprised that this stranger recognized her was thanks to Liang Hao.
The club had not been officially established, and the members’ photos hadn’t been posted on the club wall, but someone had posted a thread on Tieba (a forum) with the photos of the newly elected Xia Yiqiu and Xu Qingfeng on the day of the vote. Schoolmates didn’t care much about the Psychology Club itself, but two ‘campus beauty’ level figures were enough to ignite the campus forum. Liang Hao informed Xia Yiqiu immediately.
“I, I want to…” The girl in front of them stammered, unable to form a complete sentence.
“Don’t worry, take your time.” Xu Qingfeng comforted her; she sensed the girl was very panicked.
“Ah, forget it.” With that, the girl ran off.
She ran very quickly, leaving no time to stop her.
“Hey, don’t leave, student!” Xia Yiqiu shouted loudly. Upon hearing her, the girl sped up and disappeared among the students heading home.
