- Chapter 62 - You Still Have Me
In the dead of night, the streets were quiet. The cold winter wind whipped across her face and into her nostrils. The biting chill enveloped her whole body, disrupting her breathing.
Liang Hao’s physical education wasn’t great. She used all her strength to run towards the address she had been to many times and knew by heart.
A metallic taste of blood filled her mouth, and the phone in her hand was still connected.
“Don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid.”
Liang Hao comforted the girl while trying to soothe her own frantic heart.
There was no sound from the other end, only faint sobbing.
The door was not locked. The floor was a mess: a shattered vase, scattered cushions, and strange stains.
She was too late. She was still too late.
Liang Hao locked the door and changed into her own shoes. The slight sounds were heard.
“I said I won’t sign! Don’t come here again! Get out, all of you!” The voice came from the room, still strained and tearful, but full of defiance.
Liang Hao walked to the bedside and looked at the girl with her head buried in her knees. Her silver hair had grown long, with her black roots showing, making it look very awkward.
Liang Hao had asked Kong Qiaofeng why she didn’t just dye it all black or silver again. Kong Qiaofeng had looked at her, smiled faintly, and replied, “No need.”
“Qiaofeng, it’s me.”
“You came.” The girl didn’t react much; her eyes were filled with tears as she quietly looked at Liang Hao.
This was unacceptable. She should be wild and free; no one should ever make this girl cry.
“I’m sorry. I’m late.”
For leaving you alone.
Liang Hao walked over and directly embraced the person who was pretending to be strong. The girl did not resist.
She had known for a long time that the person in front of her was stubborn but kind-hearted. When wronged, she would only act aggressive and lick her own wounds.
It was on New Year’s Eve, right? They had played late into the night. Even though they had school the next day, Liang Hao still did it. She wanted to be with her.
After the New Year’s count-down that night, Kong Qiaofeng somehow produced an open beer bottle. She drank and said, “I specially bought this today. You arrived just as I opened it. It’s quite bitter, not as good as the Coke you bought, but I’m happy now, so I can drink this.”
Liang Hao tried to stop her but failed. Kong Qiaofeng drank a whole can and became drunk. It was indeed stronger than fruit wine.
“Why do you think people like drinking? I hate drunk people. Mom was killed by him. He would hit her when he was drunk, and I couldn’t stop it. I couldn’t stop it.”
Kong Qiaofeng held her head, as if plunging into a memory, completely losing control and spilling out her heart.
“Qiaofeng, Qiaofeng, don’t be afraid. It’s not your fault. You were so young then.”
It was the first time Liang Hao had seen such a vulnerable Kong Qiaofeng. Although she had guessed that Kong Qiaofeng was not as tough as she seemed, she wished Kong Qiaofeng could mock her mercilessly, just like before.
“That day, Mom was lying on the bed, so peaceful. Pills were scattered on the bedside table. She left, just like that, leaving me all alone.”
“I envy Xia Tōngxué [classmate] so much. So many people love her, and her parents constantly worry about her. That man with the loving father’s smile only cares about his reputation and wants to send me abroad permanently, so I never come back and compete with his son for the family fortune.”
“We had a big fight that day. I couldn’t stand it anymore. That woman, she was so cunning, winning among so many to have a child. She’s been secretly isolating me for years. I’ve had enough, so I returned to this apartment my mom left me. I can live perfectly well on my own.”
They hugged and cried until they fell asleep. When they woke up the next morning, only twenty minutes were left before the morning self-study session.
In the rush, Kong Qiaofeng remembered the previous night and immediately issued a warning.
“I advise you to forget everything that happened last night, got it?” She raised her fist to threaten her.
“Hahahaha, so cute.”
“What nonsense are you talking about, Liang Hao, do you know?”
“Ah, what are you saying? Did you say something last night?” Liang Hao’s acting was barely passable, giving Kong Qiaofeng a way to save face.
“That’s good.” Kong Qiaofeng didn’t believe her at all; they both knew the truth tacitly.
“Little Liangzi, there’s a new toothbrush in that cabinet,” Kong Qiaofeng said, pointing to the cabinet under the sink.
“Alrighty.”
Kong Qiaofeng’s father was a complete Phoenix Man (a man from a poor family who attains success) and a Man Who Feeds on the Wealth of a Dead Wife’s Family (a scoundrel who marries a wealthy woman for her inheritance).
The current Kong Group should have been called the He Group ten-plus years ago. Kong Qiaofeng’s maternal grandmother passed away early. Her maternal grandfather never remarried and founded the He Group single-handedly. In his prime, he got cancer. Due to a lack of emotional care for his daughter, she was deceived by Kong Lizhen, this glib and smooth-talking young man.
But with his time running out, and his daughter set on this man, he could only give repeated instructions, entrusting his daughter, who had a ‘love-brain,’ and the company to Kong Lizhen before he passed, though the shares were still in his daughter’s hands.
For the first few years, Kong Lizhen was well-behaved, a good husband and father in the eyes of outsiders. It wasn’t until he tricked her out of her shares, claiming it was for corporate centralization, that Kong Lizhen completely changed his tune. First, he renamed the company. Then, he spent every night drinking and carousing outside, returning only to hit and kick her.
Fortunately, Kong Qiaofeng was already in her mother’s womb before her grandfather passed, and the will left 10% of the shares to Kong Qiaofeng. Kong Lizhen pretended to be a grieving single man for a few years after his wife’s death. Even though Kong Qiaofeng’s attitude towards him was poor, she was his only child on the surface. Perhaps he had illegitimate children outside, but they were also girls, so he wasn’t stingy with Kong Qiaofeng normally.
Three years ago, after he brought his precious son home, he completely dropped the pretense. When Kong Qiaofeng turned sixteen, Kong Lizhen placed a share transfer contract in front of her. Kong Qiaofeng refused, and the arguments became increasingly frequent.
This time, after she left home and cut off all contact, and after a few months when Kong Qiaofeng still hadn’t submitted, he directly broke into the apartment.
“He said if I didn’t go back and didn’t sign the contract, he’d cut off my study abroad funds. But those funds were clearly left to me by my grandfather.”
Kong Qiaofeng is not yet eighteen and cannot temporarily control her inheritance. She only has 100,000 yuan on her.
For someone who used to spend lavishly, things are now quite tight, not to mention the money needed for study abroad preparations.
If she gives up, all her efforts will be in vain. Kong Qiaofeng doesn’t particularly long to study abroad, but she also doesn’t know what else she can do.
She only has a little over a year left until she turns eighteen and takes the Gaokao (national college entrance exam). Kong Qiaofeng is feeling lost, but she absolutely refuses to have any further relationship with her so-called father.
“Liang Hao, do you think I shouldn’t have been born?”
If she hadn’t existed, would her mother have married him? Would her grandfather have compromised?
“No.” Liang Hao hugged her tighter.
“Then why does no one like me? Everyone has abandoned me. I have no reason to exist. My existence is a mistake.” Kong Qiaofeng finally couldn’t hold back and cried again.
Oh, Heaven, please let this be the last time. Please don’t let me hear her cry again, and don’t let her be sad again.
She placed her hands on Kong Qiaofeng’s shoulders and looked at the girl with determined eyes.
“Kong Qiaofeng, you still have me.”
“An idol can’t lose her brilliance, or what will happen to a fanatic like me?” Liang Hao’s voice was also choked with sobs.
“You’re not a fanatic. You’re pretending. You liar.” Kong Qiaofeng punched her a few times, then let go. It didn’t hurt at all.
Liang Hao wasn’t late. Kong Qiaofeng only called Liang Hao after those people had left. She didn’t know why she made the call; she just really wanted to see Liang Hao.
When she heard the person ask, “What’s wrong?” she replied, “I want to see you.” Coincidentally, it was right after evening self-study. In less than ten minutes, the person arrived, with messy hair, showing how worried she was.
That person kept her word. That day, when Xia Yiqiu’s birthday, that person had walked her home, and she had said, “In the future, when I call you, you have to come immediately.” This liar never lied about the things she promised.
“I’m not lying to you, Qiaofeng. Look at me. You still have me. I, Liang Hao, cannot live without you.”
“You won’t leave me?”
“No, never.” Liang Hao hugged her again.
After that day, Kong Qiaofeng dyed her hair completely black and transferred from the International Department to a regular science class. The 100,000 yuan would be enough to last her until she turned eighteen and finished the Gaokao.
Liang Hao was inseparable from her, tutoring her daily. The two of them didn’t play games; “Little Liang” was still the one being bossed around, but Liang Hao’s own grades actually improved a lot because of this.
A few months later, at the end of the second semester of Grade 11, Kong Qiaofeng moved up to the Zero Class for science students.
This was not only due to the merit of the lunchtime tutoring group where both she and Liang Hao often joined Xia Yiqiu, but also because Kong Qiaofeng had a good foundation from junior high school. She wasn’t someone who had never studied. Before, she was just too proud to hang out with others, but she still listened in class. It was just that the knowledge taught in the International Department was different and required systematic re-learning, plus she was studying desperately herself.
Liang Hao’s goal is Hua University. No top student at Weicheng No. 1 High School doesn’t aim for Hua University. As an established key high school, this goal is not an exaggeration.
Kong Qiaofeng doesn’t have a specific target school. If she can’t get into Hua University, choosing a university in the capital city is not an excessive goal for someone already in the Zero Class, especially with a year left to push herself.
The summer vacation passed just like that. During this time, the study group consisting of Gao Zhi, Liang Hao, and Kong Qiaofeng never stopped, meeting punctually every day at the municipal library. Xu Qingfeng, on the other hand, already liked to frequent the library, so it was a matter of convenience, except that she now had a beauty by her side—a source of literary inspiration!
Grade 12 began, and the recruitment for the Psychology Club started again.
Since Xu Qingfeng and Xia Yiqiu had already secured early admission (to university), the main recruitment work was unexpectedly managed by the two club presidents along with the students who were originally in Grade 10 and were now in Grade 11.
It was their turn to be on duty during lunch again.
“President Xia, what do you think of the psychological drama that Teacher Du mentioned?” Xu Qingfeng turned her head and pulled Xia Yiqiu’s hand.
“What do I think? Write the script first.”
Xia Yiqiu was very aloof, lying on the chair with her eyes closed, giving Xu Qingfeng a look.
After one semester, she had completely figured out Xu Qingfeng.
A clingy spirit.
But, she liked it.
“Yes, my dear President, I guarantee the mission will be completed!” Xu Qingfeng saluted Xia Yiqiu.
“Keep it down. Behave yourself. What if someone comes?” Xia Yiqiu lightly nudged Xu Qingfeng’s shoe.
“Oh, we’ve been waiting for so long. There’s no one. Every time we’re on duty, there aren’t many people. We’ve only helped a few people in almost a year.” Xu Qingfeng looked slightly worriedly at the “Annual Good Person List” which had the name “Feng Xiaoxiao” on it.
Just then, a tall, quiet girl walked in, her face radiating confidence.
She doesn’t look like someone seeking counseling, Xu Qingfeng thought, but still said the usual line.
“Hello, tōngxué, are you having any difficulties?”
“Hello, Presidents. I’m Shen Nanxi from the Grade 10 Liberal Arts Zero Class. I’m here to sign up for the Psychology Club.”
Oh, right, today was the official sign-up day.
“Tōngxué, fill out the form.”
Xu Qingfeng handed a form to the girl.
