- Chapter 4 - Tutoring the Child with Homework
Gu Wancheng ruffled Chaochao’s small curls and asked, “Which questions do you not understand? I will teach you.”
Chaochao pointed at several problems and said, “These, these, and these. I do not understand any of them.”
Gu Wancheng looked at the page and his mouth twitched; it would have been easier for the boy to just say he did not understand anything at all.
He turned to look at Chaochao, who was staring back with an innocent expression. Taking a deep breath, Gu Wancheng forced a smile. “Come here, let me teach you.”
After more than half an hour spent teaching Chaochao two pages of arithmetic, Gu Wancheng felt physically and mentally exhausted.
Knock, knock
Precisely then, a knock sounded at the door. Gu Wancheng stood up immediately and practically sprinted to open it.
From his movement, which was as wild and free as a galloping horse, one could tell that he had escaped a sea of suffering and that freedom was finally within his grasp.
He pulled the door open with force. “Butler Chen! You are a god!”
Butler Chen was silent. He felt that if there were a question mark to be raised, it should be about Gu Wancheng’s sanity, not his own.
He stoically held out the tray in his hands. “Mr. Gu, this is the stewed snow pear with silver ear fungus you requested.”
Ignoring Butler Chen’s bewildered gaze, Gu Wancheng took the tray. “Butler Chen, why did you deliver it personally?”
“I wanted to ask Mr. Gu if there is anything else you need me to prepare.”
“You can decide on that yourself.”
Butler Chen nodded. “Would you like to take a look?”
Gu Wancheng shook his head. “No need, I trust you.”
The butler nodded kindly. Gu Wancheng took the two bowls of snow pear soup inside, set them down, and returned the tray to Butler Chen.
After Butler Chen took the tray and left, Gu Wancheng closed the door.
“Alright, study time is paused. Come and have some snow pear soup first.”
Chaochao immediately dropped his pen and cheered loudly, “Hooray! Long live Daddy!”
Gu Wancheng gave a light laugh and pinched the boy’s chubby little cheek.
“Drink slowly, and be careful not to burn yourself.”
Chaochao answered absentmindedly, his eyes darting constantly toward the two bowls of soup.
Gu Wancheng shook his head at the sight and cleared his throat. “I am not stopping you. Eat.”
Upon hearing this, Chaochao immediately pulled a bowl toward himself. The silver ear fungus had been simmered until it was gelatinous, and the snow pear was cooked soft. The texture was delicate and the taste was sweet.
“It is so delicious!”
Gu Wancheng nodded in agreement; it was indeed excellent. He decided he wanted to have this again tomorrow.
The bowl did not hold much. After only a few sips, Gu Wancheng stared blankly at his empty bowl. That is it? This bowl is too small; it is not even enough to fill a tooth gap.
“I am full!” Chaochao put down his spoon.
Gu Wancheng was speechless. Well, I suppose it is enough to fill a child’s stomach.
Chaochao tilted his head. “Do we still have to do homework?”
Homework? Let us not. Not unless the boy could do it himself.
He glanced at Chaochao and, remembering the painful experience of tutoring him just now, Gu Wancheng made a decision. “No more writing today. Go and play.”
Chaochao’s eyes instantly lit up. “Really?”
“Really.”
“Hooray!” Chaochao picked up his bowl, let out a cheer, and ran excitedly out of the room.
Gu Wancheng followed behind him. “Be careful, and do not run while holding a bowl.”
Chaochao slowed down, put the bowl in the kitchen, and went to the living room to watch television.
Sitting on the sofa with his feet dangling off the floor, he picked up the remote to search for My Little Pony. From the way his legs swung back and forth, it was obvious he was in a great mood.
“You cannot watch for too long; half an hour is enough.”
Chaochao said without turning his head, “Mhm, I know.”
Really? You do not look like you know at all.
Gu Wancheng waved Butler Chen over. “Butler Chen, please help me keep an eye on him. He is only allowed to watch for thirty minutes.”
Butler Chen bowed slightly. “Rest assured, Mr. Gu. I will watch over the young master.”
Gu Wancheng smiled and nodded, ruffled Chaochao’s head twice, and then turned to walk away.
Chaochao, who was too absorbed in My Little Pony, completely ignored the sensation on his head and stared fixedly at the television.
It made sense; because he often owed homework, he had not been allowed to watch television for many days. Now that he finally had the chance, he naturally had to be serious about it.
Butler Chen sighed. If the young master were as serious about his homework, he would not have been banned from the television. The Master liked doing homework when he was a child.
Gu Wancheng returned to his room and opened his computer. He refined a draft he had drawn earlier, looked it over, and sent it to the client.
The client happened to be online and replied immediately after the image was sent.
【Wow! Teacher, you are amazing!】
【Thank you. Does it look satisfactory to you?】
The client’s username was MantaRose, and her profile picture was a cute anime girl. It was unexpected that she liked the Cthulhu style.
She examined the draft carefully. Initially, she thought such a fast turnaround would result in something perfunctory, but she was pleasantly surprised. It was not careless at all; Gu Wancheng’s diligence was evident in the details.
The more she looked, the more she liked it, and she typed excitedly.
【Thank you, Teacher! I love it so much. You are truly wonderful!】
【Thank you for the praise. Is there anything that needs to be changed?】
【No need, no need! I am very satisfied.】
In a room decorated in shades of pink, a girl lay on her bed screaming with excitement. Heaven knows how many artists she had approached, but none had satisfied her. Gu Wancheng’s first draft had instantly struck a chord with her heart.
【As long as you are satisfied. I will have the final piece out tomorrow.】
【Thank you, Teacher. You have worked hard!】
Gu Wancheng was moved as he looked at that anime profile picture; clients who were this easy to talk to were rare.
Moved as he was, his late-stage procrastination made it impossible for him to focus on work. He decided to set it aside and finish the drawing tomorrow.
Having made his decision, Gu Wancheng played with his phone with a clear conscience.
【Shocking! Why is the four-time Best Actor winner joining a kid-variety show?】
【Best Actor Zhao’s secret marriage】
【E-sports god takes his younger sister on a kid-variety show】
【Talented singer Jian Yue signs with kid-variety show】
【Best Actress Yu brings daughter Mi Tu to kid-variety show】
【Jiang Yu, Intern Dad】
When he saw the name Jiang Yu, Gu Wancheng’s finger paused, and he clicked on the link.
As soon as he opened it, he saw Jiang Yu’s poster. Looking at the shy smile on Jiang Yu’s pure and lovely face, he looked like a boy-next-door with no ulterior motives. Unfortunately, he was not what he seemed.
Thinking about how the novel described him stepping over the original owner to climb the ranks while maintaining an innocent facade, he realized Jiang Yu took all the good reputation for himself. Because the original owner was a commoner with few fans, Jiang Yu could act without restraint. Even though the Bo family was powerful, Gu Wancheng chalked this up to a plot-mandated death.
He lowered his eyes, and a mocking smile appeared on his face. On the phone screen, the Jiang Yu on the poster was still smiling shyly.
He felt disgusted and simply exited the page; out of sight, out of mind. He was afraid that one more look would give him a heart attack.
He clicked on the first trending topic. The four-time Best Actor was named Zhao Yunqing. He was thirty-four years old and a serious actor. Unlike idols who cannot date, he was not afraid that marriage would affect his career.
Regarding his sudden appearance with a child, except for a few fans who reacted strongly and felt deceived, most fans did not have a negative reaction. After all, it was about time for Best Actor Zhao to get married.
They flocked to Weibo to ask the actor to post some photos of the child.
As for the e-sports God Chu Yian, the book introduced him as a pure extrovert, a “sunny and cheerful big boy.” His younger sister, Chu Yuetong, was also a pure extrovert. The family was quite troubled by her personality, and they joined this program hoping to temper her hyperactive nature.
Gu Wancheng chuckled. Although the siblings were not socially anxious, there was a difference; Chu Yian was a bit more soft-spoken.
Suddenly, the sound of a car came from outside. Gu Wancheng stood up, pulled back the curtain, and looked down.
