- Chapter 26 - Coconuts and Coconut Crabs
After Chaochao had picked about half a small basket of blueberries, Gu Wancheng called a halt.
“Alright, that is enough. If you want more, we will come back next time.”
They were not far from the beach now. After walking for a few minutes, they arrived near the coconut trees.
Chaochao looked up at the tall coconut trees in shock. What tall trees!
“Are we going to pick the fruit from up there?” Looking at the coconuts so high above the ground and then at his own small stature, Chaochao pouted.
Gu Wancheng’s lips twitched. “Of course not. Baba cannot reach them; we will pick up the ones on the ground.”
One should not even think about the coconuts still on the trees. Therefore, do not only look at the sky; occasionally, you must look at the ground.
Hearing this, Chaochao patted his chest and let out a sigh of relief. Fortunately, he thought he was about to have to climb a tree.
Gu Wancheng saw through his thoughts instantly and flicked his forehead.
“What kind of messy things are you thinking? Even if someone had to climb, it would not be you.”
Chaochao shook his head. “I was not thinking messy things. I have to protect you, so how could I let you do hard labor?”
Gu Wancheng felt a warmth in his heart. Looking at Chaochao’s serious little expression, he could not help but smile.
Chaochao: o(一︿一+)o
“Why are you laughing? I am very capable, really.”
“Baba is just too happy.”
“Hmph, as long as you know. Tell me whatever needs to be done next time, and I will do it.”
[Is Chaochao already a “warm man” at such a young age?]
[This is called training them while they are young.]
Having said that, Chaochao’s tone shifted. “So, can you tell Father not to make me do my homework anymore?”
The smile on Gu Wancheng’s face froze instantly. What?
The old father watching the live stream furrowed his brows.
[???]
[Too naive.]
[Chaochao, you, I thought you,]
Gu Wancheng stared blankly at Chaochao and asked, “What did you say?”
Chaochao repeated himself, “Can you tell Father not to make me do my homework anymore?”
Gu Wancheng looked at him with a complex expression. Naive, far too naive.
So he was plotting this all along. Heh.
“No.”
Chaochao’s eyes widened, unable to believe what he had just heard.
Chaochao’s composure broke instantly. “Why? I even helped you work!”
[He actually asked why. What do you think? Shrug.jpg]
[Hahaha, Chaochao, just give up, kid.]
[I thought you were a little white rabbit, but it turns out you are a crafty little black rabbit.]
Gu Wancheng gave a hollow laugh and left him with a heartless view of his back.
Chaochao watched his back with a face full of resentment, pouting and stomping his feet angrily as he followed with the basket.
[That is what happens when you talk too much.]
[Do not want to do homework, right? I suggest increasing the workload.]
Bo Yizhou fixed his gaze on that specific bullet comment and nodded slightly. Looking at Chaochao, a decision was made in his heart.
Chaochao, who was catching up to Gu Wancheng, felt a chill down his spine. He turned his head back to look, but there was only the photographer.
He turned his head back in confusion, unaware that disaster was about to strike.
Looking at Gu Wancheng, whose every movement screamed that he was unhappy, Chaochao asked, “Are you angry? Why?”
Gu Wancheng stopped and looked down at the little cub from above. He narrowed his beautiful peach blossom eyes and hummed twice without speaking.
[Three-year-old Cheng needs someone to coax him, hee hee.]
Chaochao put his hands on his hips, pouted, and looked up at him. “Are you throwing a tantrum with me?”
Gu Wancheng still did not speak.
Chaochao paced around anxiously. At four years old, he was experiencing the feeling of a “cold war.”
“I know I was wrong. Can you forgive me?” Chaochao bit his lip and looked at him expectantly.
The corners of Gu Wancheng’s mouth turned up before he pressed them back down. “Do you really know you were wrong?”
“Mm-hmm, I know.”
“Then what did you do wrong?”
This unexpected question left Chaochao dumbfounded, as if he had been petrified.
[Hahaha, this is exactly like my partner.]
[Looking at Chaochao’s face, I bet he did not expect that! Hahaha.]
Chaochao had a sudden flash of inspiration. Thinking about what had just happened, he said, “I should not have asked to skip homework.”
Gu Wancheng raised an eyebrow, nodded, and reluctantly let him off the hook.
Seeing that he had passed the test, Chaochao breathed a sigh of relief and patted his chest.
He finally finished coaxing him; he had been scared to death just now. Why was Baba acting like a child?
A child’s characteristically crisp voice rang out, “Let us go find coconuts!”
Gu Wancheng held out his hand, and Chaochao sighed as he took it.
[Who is the child here, exactly?]
[Chengcheng is still a baby too.]
[Three-year-old Cheng, no older.]
The two went to look for coconuts hand in hand. Their luck was quite good, and they found several that looked like they had fallen recently.
While searching for coconuts, Gu Wancheng did not take a single step near the base of the trees. Several times, when Chaochao wanted to go under the trees to grab a coconut, he was pulled back.
Amidst the boy’s confused gaze, Gu Wancheng told a story about a man who stood underneath a tree and was hit by a falling coconut.
Therefore, it was better to be safe than sorry.
“Baba!”
Gu Wancheng looked over. It was a coconut crab!
Wait, a coconut crab! That is meat!
Gu Wancheng’s eyes lit up. He stepped forward and pinned down the coconut crab that was trying to escape.
[What a huge crab.]
[This is a coconut crab; they can grow very large.]
The coconut crab had a rounded cephalothorax that protruded forward, part of its abdomen was folded toward the ventral side of the cephalothorax, and its legs were thick and strong. It clearly had a lot of meat. Gu Wancheng nodded in satisfaction.
[Has Chengcheng’s luck finally turned around?]
[I thought they would not have any meat to eat tonight.]
Chaochao squatted down and looked curiously at the crab, pointing at the two claws of different sizes. “Why are its claws not the same size?”
“Because they adapted to meet different functional needs.”
“Its large claw can break open hard-shelled fruits, so they also eat coconuts.”
“It is so powerful!” Chaochao thought about how hard a coconut shell was and did not expect the crab to be able to open it.
Chaochao looked up. “Is it delicious?”
Gu Wancheng remained silent for a moment; he had never eaten one either. “The taste should be good.”
He had heard that coconut crab meat was firm and springy with a faint hint of coconut milk flavor, making the taste very unique. So, it should be delicious.
However, how to bring it back became a new problem. Looking at the coconut crab struggling desperately under his foot, Gu Wancheng nearly lost his balance.
Although one coconut crab was very large, nearly as big as Chaochao, they had a lot of people and would need two.
His hands felt useless; he did not know where to start.
Ultimately, he reached out. With quick eyes and steady hands, he grabbed its two pincers while simultaneously releasing his foot from its back.
Oh wow, it was strong.
Seeing the claws flailing about, Chaochao immediately backed away, fearing he might be accidentally injured.
They went into the woods to find some sturdy grass and tied its legs. Only when he saw that it could not move did Gu Wancheng feel at ease. He planned to search again to see if there were more coconut crabs.
An hour passed. They harvested five coconuts and two coconut crabs. Checking the time, Gu Wancheng decided it was time to head back.
Chaochao carried one coconut, while Gu Wancheng put the remaining four into the back basket and carried them. He picked up the two “dinners” and set off on the journey home.
[Chengcheng’s harvest is far too bountiful.]
[I am a little envious; I really want to eat coconut crab too.]
[I already placed an order! Hahahahahahahaha.]
[You upstairs, get out! Angry.jpg]
