- Chapter 17 - She Knows? Touching the Truth First
[Gu Man: No harassment. She is quite good.]
The fans were in an uproar. In an instant, Weibo shook as countless people flooded the platform. Finally, unable to bear the heavy load, the site crashed.
But this couldn’t stop the public’s enthusiasm, they simply moved to other platforms to start new discussion threads.
- “Sisters, did you see Manman’s post?! I’m truly shocked!”
- “Not only did I see it, I screenshotted it!”
- “You’re fast! What does Manman mean? Does ‘she’ refer to Wen Mian?”
- “I can’t think of anyone else besides Wen Mian…”
- “Did Manman post this clarification specifically because she knew Wen Mian was being cyberbullied?”
- “Probably… maybe… most likely…”
- “So there really was no harassment? Did we misunderstand?”
- “So Wen Mian is actually ‘quite good’?”
- “Since Manman said so, it means she acknowledges Wen Mian. As fans, we must respect Manman!”
- “Exactly. ‘Manguang’ (the fandom name) hears you. Since Manman treats Wen Mian as a friend, we should stop looking at Wen Mian the way we used to.”
- “Manguang understands!”
With a single sentence, Gu Man’s fans began to set aside their prejudices, viewing Wen Mian through a completely new lens. The curious onlookers were left bewildered: That’s it? Are you guys really this united?
With Gu Man taking the lead, the heat surrounding Wen Mian dissipated rapidly. People began to lose interest and disperse. Only a small group of netizens and Wen Mian’s own fans continued to dig for the truth.
Late into the night, a video quietly climbed the trending charts.
Driven by curiosity, netizens clicked on it to find a clarification video regarding the allegations that Wen Mian disrespected staff members.
The footage showed a scene from Wen Mian’s participation in a dating show. At the airport, she was carrying her own luggage with a gentle smile. While the staff member’s face was blurred, they could be seen walking harmoniously by her side.
The night owls on the internet reacted immediately:
- “This is ‘disrespecting’ staff? How much more respectful can she be?”
- “Our Mianmian is so kind and people still hate on her. Do they want her to carry the staff member on her back too?”
- “Exactly. She carried her own bags because she didn’t want the staff to get tired. Isn’t that respect?”
Meanwhile, Xiao Meng, the staff member who had been tossing and turning for hours, finally posted her own statement:
@HeheheDreaming: Hello everyone, I am the staff member in the video. I want to clarify the rumors about Ms. Wen: Ms. Wen is very kind and friendly. Before the airport incident, I also thought she would be difficult to get along with, but the facts proved me wrong. She is wonderful, and I don’t want to see her misunderstood. I apologize for coming forward so late, in the future, I will be braver. I hope everyone can get to know Ms. Wen anew!
Her words spread across various platforms, and the storm of cyberbullying finally ceased.
Marketing accounts hurried to delete their videos. Some netizens apologized, while others, though silent, stopped looking at Wen Mian with disdain.
- “So that’s what happened. I’m so moved! I almost blamed a good person!”
- “I admit I judged her unfairly. It won’t happen again.”
- “Is it just me, or is Wen Mian really pitiful? Who is trying to sabotage her?”
- “Same here. A random video suddenly blows up and hits the top of the search in 30 minutes?”
- “I have a feeling there will be a follow-up!”
Wen Mian’s fans were moved to tears.
- “Finally! Sob, my Mianmian, you are finally cleared!”
- “Our Mianmian… I want to cry. If you are happy, I’ll shed tears of joy first!”
- “Sisters, our hard times are over!”
The storm vanished invisibly. By the time Wen Mian woke up and checked her phone, the trending topic had become: Wen Mian is Innocent.
She was puzzled. Is the company’s efficiency really this high?
After looking into the details, Wen Mian frowned slightly. Gu Man? It was her?
The image of Gu Man’s cold demeanor flickered in her mind. Wen Mian fell silent for a moment. Why? From choosing to team up with me yesterday to clarifying for me today… doesn’t she hate me?
Could it be that she realized I’m not the original “Wen Mian”?
Her heart raced at the thought, but she quickly calmed down. Even if Gu Man knew, it didn’t matter, she never intended to hide it anyway.
I didn’t expect the one to touch the truth first would be Gu Man. As expected of a main character! Wen Mian sighed and walked into the bathroom.
Downstairs, Gu Man was in the kitchen, head down, preparing breakfast.
Wen Mian, dangling a honey-butter flavored potato chip from her mouth, wandered downstairs and curled up on the sofa.
Life without a live broadcast is so comfortable! Wrapped in a fluffy blanket, Wen Mian sighed with satisfaction and popped another chip into her mouth.
Gu Man, wearing a simple white summer set with a delicate bracelet on her wrist, walked over carrying a plate.
“Breakfast,” a voice rang out…cool, yet carrying a hint of warmth.
Wen Mian looked up. Gu Man leaned down slightly, revealing a matching necklace at her collarbone. Her hands were slender and elegant, her knuckles tinged with a faint pink. In her other hand, she held a glass of milk.
Wen Mian shifted her gaze from Gu Man’s collarbone to her face, which remained calm and unreadable. Wen Mian nodded slightly and took the plate. “Thank you.”
Gu Man said nothing. She quietly placed the milk in front of Wen Mian and sat on the adjacent sofa, picking up a script from the table to read.
Wen Mian took a bite of the sandwich. Her eyes instantly lit up. Her fox-like eyes narrowed into crescents as she took another large, satisfied bite. Her legs, hidden under the blanket, swayed happily. Delicious! I love it!
Beside her, the silent Gu Man’s lips curved up ever so slightly as her pen moved across the script.
After finishing the meal and the milk, Wen Mian felt very full. Her beloved potato chips were momentarily forgotten. She padded to the kitchen in her slippers to wash the dishes.
Su Shiqiu and Wang Mo came downstairs. Seeing Wen Mian, they paused and nodded. “Good morning.”
Wen Mian squinted her eyes with a bright smile. “Good morning!”
After the greeting, Su Shiqiu headed to the kitchen, rolling up his sleeves. “I’ll go make breakfast then!”
Wang Mo approached Wen Mian, her eyes sparkling with expectation like a puppy. “Mianmian, have you eaten? Shall I make you a portion?”
Wen Mian sighed inwardly and shook her head. “I’ve already eaten, no need.”
“Ah?” Wang Mo’s expression fell, her “puppy ears” drooping. “Then I’ll just make my own… It’s okay, I’ll make you something next time!”
