- The Saint Disappeared with Her Memories — Her Broken Engagement Decided the Kingdom’s Destiny
- Chapter 9 - What Happened Last Night
We had planned and prepared for this, to erase our existence from people’s memories. However, this was never meant to be our first resort, but rather our last. There was a very real possibility we wouldn’t have needed to execute the plan at all. It was essentially an insurance policy, prepared just in case.
After finishing breakfast, we gathered in the mountain lodge’s living room. Morning light streamed through the window, warmly illuminating the wooden table. A faint fragrance drifted from the seasonal flowers arranged in the corner of the room. As the aromatic scent of the tea Emily had brewed filled the room, I began explaining what had happened at last night’s party.
“My original intention was to relinquish the position of Saint through proper procedures,” I said quietly, placing both hands on the table. The steam rising from my tea slightly blurred my vision.
“If he wanted it, I was prepared to accept the annulment of our engagement immediately. There should have been a way to resolve this peacefully through discussion.”
As I spoke, I recalled Prince Eric’s condescending gaze at the party venue. In the grand hall adorned with gleaming gold leaf decorations, every word he spoke to humiliate me before everyone remains only in my memory now.
“But after hearing Prince Eric’s words, I resolved to put the plan into action.”
Nadine listened intently to my story, her brow furrowed. Emily prepared more tea with a tense expression, occasionally nodding slightly. Jamel sipped his tea quietly with a thoughtful look, stroking his salt-and-pepper beard; a habit when he was deep in thought.
“I never found any value in the position of Saint,” I confessed honestly.
“In fact, I would have gladly given it up. Though I never said it out loud, I thought I had made it clear to Prince Eric that I was always willing to relinquish it. But it seems he never noticed.”
I couldn’t be the one to bring it up. It would have been best if he had noticed and we could have found a mutually agreeable solution. Nadine snorted with a dissatisfied expression.
“So that prince really was no good after all,” she said, heaving a disappointed sigh. It seemed she had anticipated this outcome too. Her opinion of the prince appeared to be even lower than mine.
“I never expected to be suddenly dragged to the party venue and told our engagement was being annulled. It was as if I were being made a spectacle of, framed as the villain.”
Why did he do such a thing? I still don’t understand. Did Prince Eric simply want to end our relationship at any cost?
“If he was going to use such methods, then I had no choice but to resort to forceful measures myself.”
As a final confirmation, I asked Prince Eric if he was truly serious. His answer was, of course, a cold affirmation of his seriousness. He even said, “I never loved you, not even once.” If he had given a different answer, I might have reconsidered at that moment. I might not have taken that final step.
“But after being spoken to like that, I resolved to carry out the plan.”
After a moment of silence filled the room, Emily leaned forward excitedly and asked, her eyes shining with curiosity. “Lady Noella! You really used ancient magic, didn’t you? That’s amazing!”
She seemed to have no regard for the prince whatsoever, showing pure interest in the magic that had been activated instead. She looked at me with her usual admiring gaze. Her innocence eased my heart somewhat.
“Hehe,” I chuckled softly, feeling slightly lighter at her bright reaction. Then I continued.
“I wasn’t needed. So, I decided to take my freedom instead.”
I had told them everything. Now I had shared last night’s events with everyone.
“Well then. Shall we proceed as planned?”
Even after hearing the story, Jamel maintained his usual composure. His deeply wrinkled eyes held a mixture of concern and expectation. He seemed to feel we needed to discuss our next steps further. I agreed.
“Yes. To proceed as planned, let’s first go meet Anctuan.”
“Understood.”
Nadine responded firmly and stood up. Her movements showed no hesitation, brimming with decisiveness. Her dignified posture reflected her pride as a knight.
We had to go meet our remaining companion who wasn’t here, the merchant Anctuan. Was he safe? He probably was fine, and the plan should have succeeded.
But there was a possibility of failure. And the one most likely to fail was Anctuan, because the effect he sought was somewhat special.
I was still a little worried. I wouldn’t feel at ease until I saw him with my own eyes. Let’s hurry and meet him. He had truly helped us with so many things. Arranging horses, preparing the lodge, and various other matters.
“Let’s prepare,” I said, standing up and smiling at my companions. Bright morning light overflowed from outside the window.
