- The Saint Disappeared with Her Memories — Her Broken Engagement Decided the Kingdom’s Destiny
- Chapter 11 - Taking Me Along ※ From the perspective of Emily, former priestess
Being recognized by Lady Noella, who served as the Saint, I was granted the special position of her disciple. This was particularly special in my life, an incredibly fortunate event.
Holding onto my admiration of wanting to become like Lady Noella, I devoted myself earnestly to my training. I still vividly remember the day I first entered the temple. The moment she gently placed her hand on my trembling shoulder and smiled at me—from that instant, my heart had been fixed solely on her.
Some of the other priestesses aimed to surpass Lady Noella and seize the position of Saint for themselves. But I was certain that such a thing was absolutely impossible. Lady Noella’s talent and ability as a Saint were overwhelming; there was no way to compete. It wouldn’t even be a contest.
When I saw the light emitted from Lady Noella’s hands as she healed a child suffering from illness, when I witnessed green sprouts appearing instantly as she blessed a desolate field—I always thought: Lady Noella is a marvelous person. She is a unique and great Saint, far beyond my reach, impossible to surpass.
And yet the temple officials treated Lady Noella terribly. They piled work on her and took credit for her achievements. Since Lady Noella herself never complained and remained silent, I too endured and stayed quiet. But honestly, every time I saw the arrogant attitudes of those old sages, I couldn’t help but feel furious.
I often saw Lady Noella reading ancient texts in the temple library. The old sages treated her dedication to research for days without rest as “her duty” and took the results as their own accomplishments. How many times did I witness such scenes?
Those who received direct guidance from Lady Noella understood to some extent. But many of the other priestesses looked down on Lady Noella’s abilities. They underestimated her without any basis. I found the situation unacceptable.
Why were they chasing the dream of stealing the position of Saint? It was impossible no matter what.
However, Lady Noella didn’t seem to wish to remain in the position of Saint. Rather, she appeared to want to pass it on to someone else. When we were alone in the temple garden, she gazed into the distance and said:
“If there’s someone who wants to become the Saint, I’d be happy to hand it over.”
Lady Noella said it jokingly. But in her eyes, there was a faint trace of sorrow. I strongly felt that Lady Noella wanted to pass the position of Saint to someone else.
If Lady Noella wished to step down from the position of Saint, I wanted to help. Precisely because she was my object of admiration, I wanted to assist in fulfilling her wish. Even if my help was insignificant.
Even if Lady Noella were no longer the Saint, she would remain my object of admiration.
For some time, Lady Noella had been secretly preparing something. One night, when I saw her stealthily taking an old magic book from the temple library without anyone noticing, I had a bad feeling. She was planning something. She might be keeping it a secret from everyone and going somewhere. I would be left behind, I absolutely didn’t want that.
“Please take me with you!”
As I burst through the door, my voice made Lady Noella turn around in surprise. For a moment, I saw agitation flash across her face.
“Um…”
“…Is it not allowed?”
When I asked to accompany her, Lady Noella scratched her cheek with a troubled expression. After a moment of silence, she let out a deep sigh and gently explained to me, as if persuading me. About the magic to erase everyone’s memories and the plan she was considering.
As expected, Lady Noella was thinking of something incredible. She was trying to gain freedom through an outrageous method that someone like me would never think of in a lifetime. And she was confident she could succeed.
“In other words, if you come with me, I’ll erase the memory of Emily’s existence from everyone’s minds. Your past will disappear, and it will be as if you never existed. Wouldn’t that be lonely?”
She was saying that out of concern for me. Worry colored Lady Noella’s eyes, but my mind was made up.
“I don’t mind! Having my memories with Lady Noella rewritten would be more painful!”
“…I see.”
After hearing my reply, Lady Noella fell silent for a while. Complex emotions swirled in her eyes, but then she let out a big sigh and smiled as if giving in. It was a gentle, warm smile.
“Alright then. Let’s go. You’ll come with me, Emily.”
“Yes!”
The moment I received her permission, my heart filled with joy. I could go with her. That made me happier than anything.
She said the plan might not be executed. It was a last resort.
But I thought Lady Noella would surely take action. I had a premonition it would happen, and somewhere in my heart, I even wished for it. That way, she would be freed from the position of Saint and the temple, and gain her freedom.
Just as I had expected, Lady Noella carried out the plan. The memories of our existence vanished. Only we, the companions, remember. We were freed from the position of Saint and the constraints of the temple, gaining our freedom. Just as planned.
And so, I was able to set off on a journey with Lady Noella.
