The Reason I Made Her My Queen - Chapter 11
How did it come to this?
Wasn’t I born as the first princess with a guaranteed future?
Or have I fallen this far…?
What did our family even do wrong!?
Though I was married off to a smaller country than my homeland, my husband was the crown prince.
The future king.
I was to be the next queen.
The crown prince was reasonably handsome, and above all, he cherished me.
Thinking that, it wasn’t a bad match.
“Why!? Why must I be divorced like this!”
“Calm down.”
“I cannot calm down! Mother, you must explain what in the world is happening to Father… to His Majesty the King…”
I had no choice but to appeal directly to my father, the king.
Yet His Majesty wouldn’t properly listen to me.
Even though his daughter was being unilaterally divorced.
“…There’s nothing to be done about it now.”
“Mother! Why!?”
“If you consider the current state of the Carnia Kingdom, you should understand. It’s simply impossible.”
“Are you saying it’s because we neglected Petronila!? There were never any problems until now!”
Mother started saying strange things.
I don’t even want to think of that child as my sister!
Why must I suffer like this because of that “failure”!
“Watch your tongue.”
“Mother?”
“Things are different now. We shouldn’t have neglected the princess with rainbow-colored eyes. No, that’s not right. The fact that royalty was being treated so lightly was abnormal from the start.”
“I don’t understand what you mean.”
“You seem determined not to understand. Very well. You’re a grown woman now. Make your own decisions and take responsibility for them.”
“Mother!?”
After saying only that, Mother left the room, leaving me alone.
Unable to comprehend what was happening, I could only stand frozen in place.
“What am I supposed to do?”
Left alone in the room, I could only feel utterly lost.
Speaking ill of my “inferior-born half-sister” had been as natural as breathing.
The stress had been building from living in an unfamiliar foreign country.
There was no half-sister in my married country to vent my frustrations on.
Although my husband cared for me, my in-laws were strict people, and I couldn’t let my guard down.
I was exhausted.
The only way I could think to relieve stress was by complaining to the ladies-in-waiting I had brought from my homeland.
The chatty ladies-in-waiting enthusiastically made the “incompetent princess of inferior birth” their favorite topic of conversation.
‘I don’t understand why you speak so ill of your half-sister princess. Moreover, even your ladies-in-waiting end up mocking your own country’s princess. Did you feel nothing? Have you seen the expressions of our kingdom’s ladies-in-waiting and attendants? Those who speak ill of others are ugly. And I hear the princess has rainbow-colored eyes. Why? Rainbow eyes are the pride of the Carnia Kingdom. They should be celebrated as the recovery of our ancestors’ eyes, never something to be mocked.’
When the divorce was decided, my husband said this with a sorrowful frown.
I couldn’t understand what he was talking about.
It’s still the same now.
Although my mother was a concubine, she was the highest-ranking consort after the queen.
My proud mother, who was exceptionally beautiful and had no issues with her lineage, couldn’t become queen simply because she wasn’t royalty.
Even as a duke’s daughter, she couldn’t surpass a princess from a neighboring country.
That was all there was to it.
It might have been different if Mother had borne a prince.
Unfortunately, including me, Mother only gave birth to princesses.
Unable to become the queen mother, Mother was fixated on marrying her daughters to royalty.
“I gave birth to sons…”
Unlike Mother, I produced the long-awaited heirs.
“I gave birth to two of them!?”
So why…?
‘Give up on the princes.’
‘Mother!?’
‘Your ex-husband is the crown prince, isn’t he? Of course, he will remarry.’
“That can’t be! While I’m still his wife!?”
‘You’re not his wife anymore. You’ve been divorced, haven’t you?’
‘…!’
‘Face reality. If the crown prince remarries and that woman bears him a son, that child will become the heir. It’s rare for the children of a previous wife to become king.’
‘But…’
‘The fact that you were divorced is proof enough. Their country has promised to properly raise both princes. You should be grateful for that and never think about contacting your sons again.’
‘Such…’
I was talked into it by Mother.
The letters I sent to my sons were somehow collected by Mother without my knowledge.
I was firmly warned not to send any more letters, but unable to give up completely, I secretly entrusted a letter to a lady-in-waiting.
But it never reached my sons…
I continued writing letters that would never reach anyone.
