- Chapter 14 - Pass It on Qiao Yuxi Is Just Not Good at This.
Shen Mo and Gu Huazhang also entered the shop to exchange their gold coins. It seemed the production team hadn’t placed them too far apart; otherwise, everyone wouldn’t be gathering in small groups. The only real variable was Qiao Yuxi, who had been allowed to choose his own landing spot.
“Teacher Qiao, Brother Yishu, let’s go~” Su Er urged, pulling on Lou Yishu’s arm.
“How did your fruit sales go?” Qiao Yuxi asked, taking the initiative to talk to Su Er.
Su Er immediately let go of Lou Yishu’s arm and leaned toward Qiao Yuxi. “We exchanged them for 100 gold coins.”
“One hundred!” Qiao Yuxi was stunned. He hadn’t expected those little wild fruits to be so valuable.
“You must have picked a great many of them,” Lou Yishu observed, immediately identifying the key. To earn 100 gold coins, the volume couldn’t have been small.
Su Er glanced at Lou Yishu as he spoke, but chose to answer Qiao Yuxi instead: “We picked 100 fruits; one gold coin per fruit.”
However, Qiao Yuxi didn’t take the bait. Instead, he skillfully changed the subject. “I suddenly regret it.”
“Regret what?” Lou Yishu naturally picked up the conversation. Su Er was a step too slow and awkwardly closed his mouth.
“I should have agreed to let you hoist me up earlier.”
“Too late.” Lou Yishu had begun to understand Qiao Yuxi a little; he could tell the man was being facetious, so he played along.
But at that moment, Su Er saw his opening and precisely cut into the conversation: “Teacher Qiao, you can hoist me up to pick them! I am very light!”
The statement was heavy with ambiguity, he was practically playing his cards face-up. Beside them, Yu Yuan, who had remained silent, saw his expression darken.
Qiao Yuxi didn’t answer Su Er immediately. Instead, he used his peripheral vision to gauge Lou Yishu’s reaction.
As for Lou Yishu, he was observing the surroundings with a slight smile, his mind whirring with unrelated thoughts: The air here is quite moist, I suppose all the northern birds are here now, It’s so cold in the North; I wonder how my parents are? Is Lou Qingtai’s medical bill due soon? It should be in three or four days. I mustn’t forget my dinner date with Grandma Lin.
Ideas flashed through his mind every two seconds, yet not a single one involved Qiao Yuxi or Su Er. Qiao Yuxi’s molars were nearly grinding to dust, but his face remained warm and serene.
“There is no need. I am merely ‘impressive on the outside but hollow within’ I have no real strength.”
Su Er: “…”
Some people are so ruthless they’ll even insult themselves.
As they talked, they reached a fork in the road. Since Lou Yishu and Qiao Yuxi had left their supplies by the river, they simply confirmed the general direction with Su Er and parted ways.
“Can we try out this game card in a bit to see how it works?” Qiao Yuxi asked.
After buying a bottle of water and one game card, they only had 30 gold coins left. Even if they bet them all, the payout wouldn’t be massive, and the risk was high; one slip-up and they’d be penniless.
“If someone challenges us for 50 coins but we only have 30, what happens?” Lou Yishu asked. They had forgotten to ask the host, but fortunately, the director had the PD clarify the rules.
“If you lose, you only pay the 30 you have. If you win, you win the full 50.”
“So if I have zero coins, I lose nothing but gain everything if I win?” Qiao Yuxi laughed. Clearly, this game was about more than just mechanics.
They returned to their initial “camp.” As soon as they arrived, Qiao Yuxi was eager to play a round with Lou Yishu.
The rules were simple: a bell with a lid was placed between the players. They would alternately raise and lower their hands. At any point during a “lowered hand” moment, either player could lift the lid. If the other player slapped the bell and made it ring, they lost. The winner gained a point and got to “slap” the loser’s head.
“If we play together, it’s just moving money from the left hand to the right,” Lou Yishu said sensibly.
Qiao Yuxi: “We’re poor anyway! What’s wrong with playing one round with our two chances?!”
Lou Yishu: “Very well, very well.”
The live comments were in stitches:
- “Being poor yet so righteously stubborn.”
- “Exactly! What’s wrong with playing one round?!”
- “No acting cute like Qiao Yuxi in the comments, please.”
- “Qiao Yuxi: I am NOT acting cute; say it again and I’ll assassinate you offline.”
The game hadn’t even lasted two seconds.
Slap~
Qiao Yuxi’s eyes widened. In those two seconds, across only two turns, Lou Yishu had lifted the lid and Qiao had rung the bell. Lou Yishu’s tiny “slap” arrived as promised.
It was called a slap, but it felt more like a caress. Qiao Yuxi suddenly remembered Lou Yishu’s inhuman arm strength, and his mind uncontrollably bubbled with pink thoughts.
He’s so strong, yet he’s so gentle when he hits me.
But the pink bubbles were quickly burst.
Slap~ Slap~ Slap~
They were replaced by a fierce competitive spirit. He refused to believe it! How could he not win a single round?! Qiao Yuxi rolled up his sleeves, his entire focus locked onto the bell.
Finally, in the last round, Lou Yishu suppressing a laugh let the bell ring.
