The Post-Apocalyptic Rival Who Crashed My Wedding with a Baby - Chapter 17
Hearing this, Shen Qingyu’s pupils constricted violently. She hadn’t expected Duan Muyu to be so sharp.
Beside her, Jiang Weiqing immediately broke into a fit of coughing. “Duan Muyu, don’t talk nonsense!” she barked. She emphasized each word: “Shen Qingyu and I are rivals. How could we possibly have a child together?”
Duan Muyu’s startling conclusion had genuinely rattled Jiang Weiqing. Internally, she marveled at how “deceptive” this child Shen Qingyu had picked up truly was—the resemblance must be even stronger than she thought. She was so shocked she even forgot to fire back at Chen Huawei’s earlier mockery.
Duan Muyu tapped a few keys on her tablet, her tone flat. “My calculations are never wrong.”
Seeing that Jiang Weiqing clearly didn’t believe her, Duan Muyu didn’t bother explaining. She simply rolled up her window. After all… it had nothing to do with her.
Shen Qingyu, meanwhile, let out a tiny, private sigh of relief.
Chen Huawei, looking at Shen Qingyu, was suddenly overcome with joy. “Goddess Qing! I finally found you!” He turned and snapped at his leader, “Boss, there’s no way the Goddess and Jiang Weiqing have a child together.”
He pounded on the glass of the Jeep. “Hutong, stop the car!”
“Forget it, Chen,” Hutong’s muffled voice came from the driver’s seat. “Right now we need to—”
Before his teammate could finish, Chen Huawei had already rolled down the window and hopped out with practiced agility, leaping onto the roof of the RV next to Shen Qingyu. His voice trembled with excitement as he looked at her with pure adoration. “Goddess, do you remember me?”
“Back at the university physics competition summer camp? You were kind enough to lend me your notes, and I ended up winning third place nationally!” Chen Huawei’s eyes sparkled like a devoted fan meeting a superstar.
Faced with such an intense, burning gaze, Shen Qingyu didn’t feel offended—just surprised. She was amazed someone would remember such a trivial thing for so long. She searched her memory until a blurry figure emerged. She nodded. “I remember. You wore black-rimmed glasses back then, didn’t you?”
Chen Huawei couldn’t believe she actually remembered. He pointed to his eyes. “After I awakened my Wind powers, my vision fixed itself, so no more glasses!”
“No more glasses? Then what are those two things in your head?” Jiang Weiqing interjected, her voice dripping with a sudden, inexplicable saltiness as she watched Chen Huawei’s fawning display.
Chen Huawei’s lip twitched. “Can’t a guy misspeak when he’s nervous?” He immediately followed up with a jab: “Good thing the Goddess isn’t petty like you, Jiang Weiqing.”
He added, “Our Goddess is the ultimate academic titan and the peak of beauty. You naturally can’t compete.”
Hearing him call her “Goddess” and “Academic Titan” every other sentence, Jiang Weiqing muttered under her breath, “It’s not like we’re taking math and physics exams anymore. What’s there to be so smug about?”
Chen Huawei sneered. “And could you even pass them if we were?”
Thinking back to the physics and math problems that had literally moved her to tears in the cave, Jiang Weiqing fell into a deep, heavy silence.
Seeing her speechless, Chen Huawei twisted the knife. “Only someone with your lack of taste would fall for a white lotus like Lin Qitong.”
Anger flared in Jiang Weiqing’s mind. “Qitong is wonderful! Don’t you dare speak of her that way!” She glanced at Shen Qingyu. “Besides, didn’t your ‘Goddess’ like Lin Qitong back in university too?”
Her sharp, mocking tone woke the sleeping baby, who began to whimper. She didn’t wail; she just let out small, soft sobs, tiny “golden beans” of tears rolling down her fair cheeks. Her face turned a pained red. It was a heart-wrenching sight.
Jiang Weiqing immediately looked apologetic. She leaned down. “Baby, I wasn’t yelling at you.”
Shen Qingyu cradled the child, patting her back rhythmically. She looked at Jiang Weiqing. “It was just a crush during university, nothing more.”
In truth, the name “Lin Qitong” felt like an ancient memory to her. She had met Qitong in the library during a “Pen Pal” event. By chance, they became pen pals, debating weekly topics through letters and gradually developing an affinity for one another. But once she actually met Qitong in person, she realized the girl was a different person entirely.
In letters, Qitong was sharp-witted and original—a soulmate. In reality, she only wanted to discuss the latest makeup and fashion bags. The spark had died long ago.
Hearing this, Chen Huawei gave a double-standard thumbs up. “The Goddess has such keen eyes! You saw through Lin Qitong’s act so quickly.”
Jiang Weiqing watched Chen Huawei’s sycophantic performance and felt her face twitch. Double standard! Absolute double standard! How had she never realized Chen Huawei was this shameless?
Chen Huawei turned back to Shen Qingyu, beaming. “Goddess, I’m not called ‘Lucky Chen’ for nothing. I knew I’d run into you.” He carefully pulled a rectangular gift box from his coat. “It happens to be your birthday tomorrow. This is for you.”
He gently pinched the baby’s cheek. “Little one, I didn’t know you existed. I’ll make it up to you next time.”
The baby seemed to understand and gave a magnanimous nod, her well-behaved manner making Chen Huawei’s smile widen even further.
“It’s alright. I haven’t celebrated my birthday in a long time,” Shen Qingyu said, trying to decline.
“Just open it,” Chen insisted, thrusting the box into her hands.
Unable to refuse his enthusiasm, Shen Qingyu accepted. She unwrapped the elegant packaging to find a heavy, cyan-colored fountain pen.
Chen Huawei gave a bashful laugh. “I wasn’t sure what to get, but I heard your handwriting was beautiful, so I chose this one. I hope you like it.”
Shen Qingyu tested the weight of the pen. Her eyes lit up. “Eternal brand… the quality and grip were always the best.” The color was exactly to her taste; it was clear Chen had put a lot of thought into it.
“Heh, I happened to pass by the old factory and scavenged it,” Chen said proudly, shooting a look at Jiang Weiqing. “That’s the ‘Lucky Chen’ perk.”
Watching the two of them chat more and more harmoniously, Jiang Weiqing let out a heavy snort. He’s doing this on purpose.
She suddenly let out a loud cough. “I guess ‘Lucky Chen’ is the name of your family’s shop.” A water bow and arrow manifested in her hands. She drew the string to full tension and fired. A sign on the roadside was sliced clean in half.
The sign read: [Lucky Chen’s Convenience Store].
Chen Huawei’s face fell. “Jiang Weiqing, aren’t you a bit old for this?”
He looked around for a sign of her own to destroy in retaliation, but found nothing. He glared at her.
“I’m three years old today, thanks,” Jiang Weiqing made a face. She then used her finger to tickle the baby’s palm, saying in a mock-infant voice, “I’m the baby’s bestest buddy!”
The baby responded with a “ya-ya,” seemingly in agreement.
“Your skin is thicker than the city walls,” Chen Huawei muttered.
Jiang Weiqing took it as a compliment.
Inside the RV, Lin Yunxia massaged her forehead. “The Captain and Chen Huawei really are like oil and water.”
An Songyu was laughing so hard he couldn’t breathe. He turned to Xu Bairan. “Xiao Bai, let me teach you a lesson today.”
Bairan looked up from his homework, confused.
An Songyu rubbed his chin, speaking in a tone of mock-wisdom: “Water that is too pure has no fish, and a person who is ‘shameless’ is invincible.”
Miao Jialing burst out laughing. Lu Yan and Little Black meowed and cawed in agreement. Lin Yunxia quickly covered Bairan’s ears. “Don’t teach him that nonsense!”
Jiang Weiqing’s sharp tongue was too much for Chen Huawei. After being poked and prodded several times, he was fuming.
Noticing the child was yawning, Shen Qingyu ended the reunion. “The baby is tired. I need to take her down to sleep.”
Chen Huawei nodded understandingly, his face full of smiles. “Of course, Goddess. We’re all heading to Chonghai anyway; we’ll have plenty of time to catch up later.” He hopped back into his Jeep.
His partner, Hutong, found the whole display so embarrassing that he slammed the window shut the moment Chen was inside. Chen didn’t care; he pulled out his phone and started editing a post. It was a mock-up of a Weibo page, with a graduation photo of Shen Qingyu as the avatar. He was using up precious data to upload the “selfie” he’d just taken with her.
Even though there was a network, no one maintained these apps anymore; the posts wouldn’t actually go out, but he enjoyed looking at them on his local page.
Duan Muyu glanced over from the back seat. “Are you her superfan? A ‘fansite master’?”
Chen Huawei gave a sheepish laugh. “I’m not quite at ‘fansite master’ level. Back in college, I was just the head of the Goddess’s fan club. I managed eight QQ groups and two WeChat groups. We worked hard to make sure our girl crushed Jiang Weiqing in every poll.”
He added, “Sister Muyu, you’re amazing. As expected of a Brain-type, you saw through me instantly.”
His teammate in the front seat looked at the reflection of the bright screen in the window and rolled his eyes. A pig could have seen through you.
