- Chapter 72.2 - The Final Outcome
The vast Qiyuan Sect was draped in red silk, with dazzling double-happiness characters pasted everywhere. Warm yellow lantern light enveloped the dark-tiled walls like a delicate veil.
The music of strings and flutes filled the air as guests raised their cups in celebration.
The usually stern Zixia Zhenren, dressed in bright red wedding robes, couldn’t help but let a faint smile curl her lips.
Master Yuntai wrapped his arms around her waist from behind and whispered, “Xia, do you know? I’ve waited two thousand years for this day.”
Zixia took Yuntai’s hand, turned around, and lightly tapped his nose. “Then why did you choose to become a deceased in the first world? Do you know how much I missed you all those years?”
Yuntai hugged her from the front again, acting coquettishly. “Back then, you were so cold to me every day. If I hadn’t left, how could I have made you miss me?”
“If you miss me, you have to say it out loud.”
Zixia kissed Yuntai’s cheek and then pouted. “After you all left that world, I couldn’t accept it. I secretly went back and rewrote the story of Chu Yunshu and Li Xia, helping them escape the Chu family.”
“Ha! No wonder I couldn’t find you in the second world, you were slacking off!” Yuntai’s voice rose with a hint of reproach, and he playfully punched Zixia’s shoulder.
Zixia didn’t say much more. Instead, she covered Yuntai’s lips with her own, silencing him.
Yuntai tilted his head to respond to the kiss, his slightly closed eyes carrying a trace of delicate charm…
Meanwhile, the guests from the cultivation world were feasting and chatting loudly about recent gossip in the front courtyard.
“I heard that Master Yuntai and Master Zixia hold high status even in the immortal realm. It’s just that immortals rarely descend to the mortal world otherwise, we could’ve dined alongside them!” The sect leader of the Hopeless Sword Sect rambled to those beside him.
The Dragon King of the West Sea, sitting nearby, frowned. “Though I live in the mortal realm most of the time, I am still of divine lineage. Sect Leader Hopeless, show some respect for this elder.”
A Taoist at another table overheard and quickly scooted closer on his stool. “Dragon Queen, is it true that you went to the East Sea and beat up your son-in-law?”
The West Sea Dragon King straightened her spine. “Indeed! That shameless wretch used my daughter to seize the throne of the East Sea, relying on the spiritual springs of my domain. Yet he turned out to be a coward, betraying his own kin and nearly getting my third granddaughter skinned alive by the Xuantian Sect! Sparing his life was mercy enough!”
The crowd gasped.
Rumors had long circulated that a divine maiden, reincarnated as a dragon princess, was nearly refined by the Xuantian Sect. She only survived thanks to the Qiyan Sect’s intervention, turning the tables and slaying the Unhindered Venerable One.
Who knew the rumors were all true?
That East Sea Dragon King truly deserved it!
But the old Dragon King no longer ruled. After the West Sea Dragon Queen beat him up, the East Sea Queen installed their eldest daughter as the new ruler. Now, like the West Sea, the East Sea was also under a queen’s reign.
Stripped of power and deprived of the ancestral offerings that sustained his cultivation, the former Dragon King weakened until he degenerated into a mere loach, hiding in fear at the bottom of the sea, terrified of being eaten by stronger sea creatures.
However, the East Sea was left in complete disarray by the old Dragon King’s misrule. The current queen was too busy cleaning up the mess to attend the wedding.
Meanwhile, Baili Xin’er and A’Yu were busy hosting the guests. The grand wedding of Yunxia had exhausted them both.
Baili Xin’er was responsible for all the decorations, while A’Yu, being a Qingluan (azure phoenix), had to coordinate the birds’ aerial performances.
“A’Yu, when it’s our turn to marry, we must make these two pay us back!” The usually composed Rose Fairy complained, utterly worn out.
A’Yu didn’t reply, only gently wiping the sweat from her brow.
Remembering how valiant and fierce A’Yu had been in the second world, cutting through thorns and obstacles, it was hard to reconcile that image with the quiet, gentle figure before her now.
In a fleeting thought, she recalled Xie Shuyu’s drunken antics from the first world, and Baili Xin’er hatched a mischievous plan tonight, she’d pour three jugs of wine down that silly A Yu’s throat. Wouldn’t that be perfect?
Just as the two had finished toasting a table of guests, the visitors set down their cups and resumed their chatter.
“Rumor has it a heavyweight guest will arrive today. Could it be the Goddess of Wuliang Mountain?” a Taoist priest asked the table.
“Unlikely,” replied an elderly yet youthful-looking cultivator. “Once the Goddess of Wuliang Mountain enters the mountain, she can never leave again. Last time, to save the little white fish, she had no choice but to return to Wuliang Mountain in search of primordial spiritual energy.”
As she spoke, she suddenly seemed to sense something. “Do any of you smell a faint herbal fragrance?”
Everyone sniffed the air and nodded in agreement.
Outside the sect gates, two junior disciples stopped Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning.
“No invitation, no entry!” the young disciples declared firmly.
“Little ones, I really am your sect leader’s good friend. Don’t you recognize me?” Ye Zhixia scratched her head anxiously.
Ruan Ning stood by, arms crossed, enjoying the spectacle.
The invitation sent by Master Zixia had mysteriously gone missing likely misplaced by Ye Zhixia so the two had rushed over with only their gifts in hand.
“Why would I know you?” The gatekeeper, a child with two adorable buns atop his head, remained unmoved.
Finally, seeing Ye Zhixia at a loss, Ruan Ning pulled out a torn and hastily reassembled invitation from her sleeve and handed it to the child. “Will this do?”
The child scrutinized the invitation. Though genuine, it was in such tatters that it seemed downright disrespectful.
“Where… Ningning, where did you find this?” Ye Zhixia asked, eyeing the battered invitation in the child’s hands.
Ruan Ning reached out and pinched the cheeks of the little cat nestled in Ye Zhixia’s arms. “You tell her.”
The cat stayed silent, burying its head deeper into Ye Zhixia’s elbow.
Realization dawned on Ye Zhixia, and she promptly smacked the cat’s rear with a loud thwack.
Before dusk had fully settled, Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning entered Qiyan Sect, stepping in to greet guests in place of Baili Xin’er and A Yu under the delighted gazes of the crowd.
The wedding was a grand spectacle, with divine signs manifesting everywhere auspicious clouds heralding joy, birds singing in chorus, radiant beams of light, and flowers blooming in full splendor.
Even the demon and beast clans once sheltered by Master Yuntai sent gifts. Never before had so many auspicious omens graced a single wedding.
Once Master Zixia and Yuntai retired to their bridal chamber and the guests dispersed, Qiyan Sect returned to tranquility.
Disciples slowly tidied up while Baili Xin’er, supporting a flushed A Yu, bid farewell to Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning with a triumphant grin.
Ye Zhixia glanced first at the bridal chamber, then at the retreating couple, before finally turning to Ruan Ning.
“So… we…” She took Ruan Ning’s small hand and swung it playfully.
Ruan Ning arched her brows excitedly. “Tonight, Lin’an City is holding a night festival. Let’s go check it out!”
Ye Zhixia let out a disappointed “Aww,” but followed Ruan Ning as they flew toward the city.
–
Lin’an City was ablaze with lights, its streets teeming with people.
Ruan Ning tugged Ye Zhixia to a barbecue stall.
The busy waiter, spotting new customers, hurried over with a warm welcome.
He handed the menu to the two of them and recommended, “Ladies, we have a new grilled fish on the iron plate. Would you like to try it?”
Ruan Ning felt a chill run down her spine. “No, no, we’ll just have some vegetarian dishes.”
But Xiao Mi tugged at Ruan Ning’s sleeve twice. “I… I want to eat.”
Ruan Ning quickly covered Xiao Mi’s mouth. “No, you don’t!”
Ye Zhixia, seeing Xiao Mi’s anxious expression, hurriedly explained on her behalf, “She probably wants to try something else.”
Xiao Mi, with her mouth covered, nodded tearfully.
In the end, the three of them feasted heartily at the night market. Passersby couldn’t help but point and chuckle at the sight of adorable Xiao Mi devouring meat with gusto.
During the meal, someone mentioned how, ever since the evil Chenxu Taoist and Song Shiqi from the Xuantian Sect were executed, the public security in Lin’an City had suddenly improved dramatically so much so that people didn’t even need to lock their doors at night.
Who would have thought that the Xuantian Sect, which had always claimed to protect Lin’an City, was actually the main perpetrator of crimes?
Fortunately, those wicked disciples had also received their due punishments.
Petty thieves were thrown into prison, while those who committed serious crimes were beheaded. In short, the Qiyan Sect’s approach to governance was to mete out appropriate punishments, punishing the wicked and upholding the good.
Learning that during their absence, Yuntai and Zixia had managed the world in an orderly manner through the influence of the Qiyan Sect, both of them showed relieved expressions. They even began planning their future travels roaming freely and wandering the world.
Back in their room, Ye Zhixia first brushed her teeth meticulously, then bathed and changed her clothes before climbing into bed.
She cautiously peeked over and found Ruan Ning already fast asleep, facing the wall.
“Ah, not tonight again,” Ye Zhixia murmured softly.
Nevertheless, she thoughtfully tucked the blanket around Ruan Ning and gently embraced her from behind.
After a while, Ruan Ning turned slightly.
Ye Zhixia, long accustomed to accommodating Ruan Ning, lifted her arm. Once Ruan Ning had turned to face her, she placed her hand back on Ruan Ning’s waist, pulling her a little closer.
In her drowsy state, Ye Zhixia felt a cool sensation on the tip of her nose.
She opened her eyes slightly to see Ruan Ning grinning mischievously at her.
“Xia Xia, kiss me.”
