- Chapter 57 - The Siren and the Cultivator
Ruan Ning leaned in close to Ye Zhixia’s ear once more and whispered her plan.
Ye Zhixia listened and nodded in agreement.
Once Ruan Ning finished speaking, the two exchanged a glance and a nod before rising to their feet and stepping beside the bed.
Ruan Ning closed her eyes slightly, murmuring an incantation under her breath as her thumbs pressed against her middle fingers, weaving intricate gestures before her chest.
A faint blue glow emanated from both of them, gathering over the bed and coalescing into two identical replicas of their bodies.
Ye Zhixia casually pulled the quilt over the lifeless forms on the bed.
With everything prepared, Ruan Ning cast another spell to render the two of them invisible. Under the moonlight, they slipped out of the room unnoticed.
–
Following their usual daytime habit, Ye Zhixia reached for Ruan Ning’s hand.
This time, Ruan Ning didn’t resist. Instead, she adjusted their clasped hands into a more comfortable position.
The village houses had long since extinguished their lights, but fortunately, the bright moon hung high in the sky, illuminating the narrow paths clearly.
“I noticed that farmer’s wife’s house earlier today. Let’s check there first,” Ruan Ning suggested.
Only then did Ye Zhixia speak up. “Actually, I noticed her too, but I don’t think she’s the key to this.”
Ruan Ning paused mid-step and saw the solemn look in Ye Zhixia’s eyes.
“Alright, ‘to catch the thief, first catch the ringleader.’ Let’s head to the village chief’s house instead,” she amended her plan.
Ye Zhixia nodded in approval. “The village chief oversees all affairs here. There’s bound to be clues at his place.”
Using the trace of demonic aura she had left on the chief’s clothes earlier that day, Ruan Ning quickly located his residence.
The chief’s home was built in a courtyard-style layout. Beyond the main gate lay a spacious open area covered in yellow sand and dirt, scattered with chaotic footprints of varying sizes likely left behind from village meetings.
Directly opposite the courtyard gate was the chief’s main hall, while the kitchen stood to the east, and the study and bedroom to the west.
The two of them first entered the main hall to investigate.
Though it was a simple village house, the furnishings inside the chief’s hall appeared anything but ordinary.
To the left of the entrance stood a waist-high white jade sculpture with intricate openwork carvings. On the aged wooden table rested a set of emerald-green jade wine vessels.
Behind the table, a multi-compartment display shelf held an array of exquisite ornaments, a lustrous jade rabbit, rare coral from the sea, and other such treasures.
Ye Zhixia pointed at the items and leaned in to whisper to Ruan Ning, “These are all expensive, fashionable goods. The rumor that Danyun Village only receives but never trades must be false.”
However, apart from these rare treasures, they found no other useful information in the main hall, so they moved on to inspect the other rooms.
With the aid of Ruan Ning’s demonic power, Ye Zhixia followed her as they phased through the door into the chief and his wife’s bedroom.
As a siren, Ruan Ning wasn’t well-versed in human affairs and couldn’t spot anything amiss. But Ye Zhixia, having traversed countless worlds, had a keener eye.
After a thorough inspection, Ye Zhixia tugged Ruan Ning’s hand and led her back outside.
Once out of earshot, Ye Zhixia whispered, “The village chief and his wife are definitely involved in the abduction of the young people.”
Ruan Ning immediately pressed for details. “What did you find?”
Ye Zhixia replied calmly, “The chief’s wife is nearly forty, yet they have no children. But on her dressing table, I saw hair ornaments typically worn by young women who’ve just come of age.”
Ruan Ning’s brow furrowed at this revelation. Without another word, she uttered, “Let’s go!”
She quickly pulled Ye Zhixia into the study, hoping to find more clues.
On the desk in the study, there was a set of books. Under the moonlight, Ye Zhixia could make out that they contained the method for creating the Suixin Corpses.
On the other side of the desk lay a stack of letters.
Ruan Ning couldn’t read, so she could only wait as Ye Zhixia examined them.
Ye Zhixia read the contents of the letters:
“The boar arrives in three days, send it to the Ten Thousand Realms Forest.”
“The boar arrives in five days, send it to the Ten Thousand Realms Forest.”
The Ten Thousand Realms Forest was likely the woods near the Ten Thousand Realms Abyss to the north. It seemed that to solve the problem here, they would have to investigate that area.
“They must be taking the kidnapped young people to the northern woods,” Ye Zhixia shared her speculation with Ruan Ning.
Hearing this, Ruan Ning immediately decided, “Then we’ll go check the woods first thing tomorrow morning.”
Ye Zhixia neatly arranged the letters, folded them, and placed them back in their original position before leading Ruan Ning out of the village chief’s residence.
As the two approached their own lodging, they heard the loud wails of a child.
Looking closely, they saw the villagers gathered outside the house and exclaimed in unison, “Oh no!”
Ye Zhixia pulled Ruan Ning toward the house, but the entrance was already packed tight. Still invisible, the two soared into the air and flew over the villagers’ heads into the house.
As they landed, the sight before them was jaw-dropping:
Ye Zhixia’s doppelgänger was straddling the child they had seen earlier, slapping him repeatedly while cursing, “You little pervert! Filthy brat!”
Meanwhile, Ruan Ning’s doppelgänger pretended to intervene, though her hands weren’t actually exerting any force. She merely kept muttering, “Junior Sister, let it go… Junior Sister, let it go…”
The child, pinned under Ruan Ning’s doppelgänger, had swollen cheeks from the beating and cried out in surrender, “Sister, I was wrong! I’ll never peek again!”
Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning noticed something crucial despite the child being beaten like this, not a single adult stepped forward to protect him.
Suixin Corpses weren’t living beings and didn’t age over time. This “child” likely wasn’t a real kid at all.
Realizing this, Ye Zhixia smirked coldly. “Seems our doppelgängers have done us a favor today.”
With that, she merged with her doppelgänger, quickly absorbing its memories.
It turned out that shortly after the two had left, rustling sounds had come from outside the room.
The “child,” taking advantage of his small size, had climbed in through the ventilation window.
He had rummaged through the room first, seemingly trying to steal something, then crept to the bed and stealthily lifted the curtain.
Ye Zhixia’s doppelgänger had inherited some of her martial skills and was no pushover. In one swift motion, it flipped the “child” onto the ground and began pummeling him.
“Please, show mercy, miss!” The village chief and his wife arrived in a hurry.
“He’s just a child. If you hurt him badly, how will we explain it to his parents?” the chief’s wife said with feigned concern.
Ye Zhixia neither agreed nor disagreed, simply standing up coldly and releasing the “child.”
A dark, unreadable glint flickered in the village chief’s eyes, a trace of ruthlessness flashing briefly before vanishing. He clasped his hands and said, “As the village chief, I deeply apologize for startling our guests.”
Ye Zhixia didn’t press the matter further, only instructing him to take the “child” away.
The chief and his wife dispersed the villagers, and as everyone returned to their homes, the village settled back into quietude.
Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning found themselves lying on the bed once again, both feeling a little embarrassed.
The discovery of the child earlier was actually due to a minor “issue” with their doppelgängers.
At the time, Ye Zhixia’s doppelgänger was sleeping on the inner side of the bed, while Xiao Mi had secretly transformed into a cow-patterned cat and curled up at the foot of the doppelgänger.
Just as Xiao Mi was sound asleep, Ye Zhixia’s doppelgänger turned over and accidentally squished her.
Xiao Mi, in pain, instinctively bit the doppelgänger, causing it to jerk away in response. But in doing so, it ended up pinning Ruan Ning’s doppelgänger beneath it.
The “child” who lifted the bed curtain happened to witness this scene, and an unsettling smile crept onto their face.
At that moment, Ruan Ning released a surge of demonic aura, pressing the intruding “child” to the ground.
Ye Zhixia’s doppelgänger was also forced down, only managing to get up after Ruan Ning’s doppelgänger began slapping the “child.”
Xiao Mi, first crushed by Ye Zhixia’s doppelgänger’s thigh and then suppressed by Ruan Ning’s doppelgänger’s aura, was fortunate that no one paid attention to the corner of the bed, allowing her to slip into her hidden space at the last moment.
“My doppelgänger probably didn’t mean to do that,” Ye Zhixia explained to Ruan Ning.
Ruan Ning lowered her eyes in thought, then suddenly looked up and flipped over, pinning Ye Zhixia beneath her.
Ye Zhixia flustered, “You!”
In the next instant, Ruan Ning rolled back to her side, grinning. “Now we’re even.”
Ye Zhixia buried half her face in the blanket, peeking at Ruan Ning with just her eyes.
“As long as you don’t mind,” she mumbled.
Ruan Ning, on the other hand, urged Ye Zhixia, “Get some sleep and rest up. I have a feeling tomorrow’s activities might be quite physically demanding.”
–
The next morning, as the sun peeked over the horizon, its light bathed the land, and Danyun Village appeared peaceful.
The villagers bustled about, moving through the streets, yet none ventured toward the sea to fish.
Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning tidied up the house and, seeing that the time was right, set off for the Boundless Forest.
As soon as they stepped outside, they knew the villagers’ attitudes would have changed after last night’s events.
Along the way, villagers who passed them whispered and pointed, even calling them “ungrateful” and “backstabbers.”
Ye Zhixia paid no mind. Without spiritual power, if she could hear them so clearly, the villagers were likely putting on a show.
Just as they were about to leave the residential area, the village chief ran up to block their path. “Leaving so soon?”
Ye Zhixia didn’t hide her intentions and replied with a smile, “We noticed something unusual about the forest to the north and thought we’d take a look.”
Ruan Ning didn’t interfere. Throughout their journey, Ye Zhixia had been cautious, and if she was doing this, she must have a reason.
“Ah, excellent!” The village chief beamed and eagerly recommended, “That forest looks dim because the trees are so dense, with deep green leaves. But the scenery inside is actually quite beautiful!”
Hearing this, Ruan Ning understood Ye Zhixia’s intent, she was testing the village chief’s stance.
The Boundless Forest was thick with demonic energy. Ordinary people who ventured there could easily be corrupted, even risking their lives.
The village chief’s suggestion was essentially pushing them into a pit of fire.
Based on the contents of last night’s letter, the Ten Thousand Realms Forest should be the place where they harm living people.
Previously, the villagers had likely planned to tie them up and send them to the Ten Thousand Realms Forest. Now that the two of them were going there willingly, the village chief was naturally very pleased.
Still feigning respect, the two clasped their hands in farewell to the chief and then set off toward the Ten Thousand Realms Forest.
Once they were out of sight, Ye Zhixia summoned the Glazed Rainbow Cloud and rode it toward the forest.
As they passed by, the vibrant flowers and lush green foliage gradually darkened in color. By the end, all the plants had turned deep blue, deep purple, or even completely black clearly not the kind of vegetation that should exist in the human realm.
The moment they stepped off the cloud, a flower as tall as two people, crowned with a dark purple fruit, launched an attack on them.
Several thick, supple vines lashed out, one quickly coiling around Ye Zhixia’s ankle.
