- Chapter 43 - Finale (Part 2)
After handing over the bribery video of Chen Jianping to the police, Chu Ning didn’t go straight home. Instead, she made a trip to Yihe Hospital.
Secretary Jiang, whose liver disease had grown increasingly severe, was now relying entirely on machines to sustain his vital signs.
Chu Ning entered the inpatient building under the guise of being the granddaughter of the patient’s close friend.
When she appeared in the hospital room, even the dazed Secretary Jiang couldn’t help but open his eyes slightly, though he seemed unable to clearly recognize who was standing before him.
“Chu Yunshu?” His voice was muffled by the nasogastric tube. “Wh-what are you doing here?”
Chu Ning didn’t care whether this sallow-skinned old man knew who she was.
She set down the flower basket—merely a decoy—and then slowly walked to the bedside with her phone in hand.
“Uncle Jiang—no, I should say, Uncle Feng.” She pretended to be her mother. “I’ve come back to claim the lives of your entire family. First, take a look at where your precious little grandson has gone.”
With that, she raised her phone and played the latest video Ye Zhixia had sent her for the frail man to see.
As the video played, agonized screams echoed from the device. Secretary Jiang’s body, which had barely been able to move, trembled violently as if trying to break free from the tubes restraining him.
Tears streamed down his sickly face. “Y-you… you’re vile!”
Chu Ning grinned, her expression almost savage. “Hahaha, isn’t this fun? Uncle Jiang, you mustn’t die yet—you haven’t seen what’s going to happen to Chu Tianheng.”
Then, still smiling, she turned and walked out of the room.
The monitors at the nurses’ station blared with urgent alarms.
Doctors and nurses rushed toward the ward, brushing past a smiling Chu Ning on their way.
–
Back at the Chu family estate, Ye Zhixia recounted in detail the years of enmity between the Feng and Chu families to Chu Hui.
Chu Hui was kind and innocent, but he wasn’t stupid.
Though he was Chu Tianheng’s son, he knew full well that the woman who had carried him for ten months and given birth to him was Chu Yunshu. The one who had doted on him tirelessly and entrusted him to her sister on her deathbed was Chu Yunshu.
“Xiao Hui, will you hesitate? After all, you share Chu Tianheng’s blood,” Ye Zhixia asked worriedly.
“First, he doesn’t deserve the surname Chu—his name is Feng Tianheng! Second, I may not be a top student, but I’ve studied biology. The only blood I share is my mother’s. What the hell is Feng Tianheng?” Chu Hui’s face flushed red with anger, his eyes blazing.
Chu Ning walked in just in time to hear his words and nodded approvingly.
Then, her expression cold, she asked Chu Hui, “Your grandfather will be released soon. Will you come with me to pick him up? He always doted on you the most.”
Instead of answering, Chu Hui said, “Sis, I want to go back to school.”
Chu Ning raised an eyebrow. “In such a hurry to rejoin the team? Did your coach call you?”
Chu Hui let out a self-deprecating laugh. “Why would the coach bother calling a nobody like me, a lousy freshman?”
He fell silent after that.
“Really don’t want to see your grandfather?” Chu Ning pressed again.
Chu Hui still didn’t answer. Instead, he stood up and headed upstairs. “I’m going to pack.”
Once Chu Hui disappeared around the staircase, Ye Zhixia hesitated before speaking softly to Chu Ning. “Ningning, with your grandfather coming home, it really wouldn’t be appropriate for me to stay at the Chu residence any longer.”
“Oh? Want to leave me?” Chu Ning stared at her expressionlessly.
“That’s not it,” Ye Zhixia replied, her voice unconsciously lowering. This Chu Ning… when had she become so domineering?
Chu Ning crossed her arms and slowly walked over to the sofa, sitting down beside Ye Zhixia.
She then rested her chin on Ye Zhixia’s shoulder and murmured, “Xiaxia-jie, are you thinking of leaving me to live somewhere else?”
Ye Zhixia had initially intended to explain that she really should go home—staying at the Chu residence indefinitely wasn’t a long-term solution.
But seeing the pitiful look in Chu Ning’s eyes, she couldn’t bring herself to say it.
“I… well, never mind. Your grandfather will probably be busy when he returns. I’ll just avoid him,” Ye Zhixia turned her head away, her gaze evasive.
Chu Ning hooked her pinky finger around Ye Zhixia’s, her chin still firmly planted on her shoulder with no intention of moving. “Xiaxia-jie, you have to keep your word, okay?”
A few seconds later, Chu Ning used her other hand to gently turn Ye Zhixia’s face toward her and reassured her, “Don’t worry, Xiaxia. That old man won’t disturb us.”
Chu Ning’s nose nuzzled against Ye Zhixia’s cheek, sending a tingling current through Ye Zhixia’s body, from her heart to her fingertips.
Eventually, Ye Zhixia felt that being too intimate in the Chu family’s living room wasn’t quite appropriate, so she stood up and casually asked, “Ningning, what would you like to eat? I’ll cook something special for you today!”
–
On the day Chu Zhenhua was released, only Chu Ning went to pick him up.
His trusted aide, Chen Jianping, had already been taken in for questioning in his place. The corporation was in a state of recovery, with employees diligently holding down their posts.
Most importantly, after receiving the notice of Chu Zhenhua’s release, Chu Ning hadn’t informed anyone else.
The investigation department hadn’t mistreated Chu Zhenhua—on the contrary, they had arranged for professional medical care for him.
When Chu Ning saw him, she was surprised to find that he looked even better than before he had been detained.
With a smile, Chu Ning went up to support Chu Zhenhua and sweetly called out, “Grandpa!”
Chu Zhenhua’s gaze swept past Chu Ning, peering into the car. Seeing no one inside, he scanned the surroundings.
“Did your brother not come?” he asked, disappointment lacing his voice.
Chu Ning maintained her smile. “He said he had something urgent and went back to school.”
Chu Zhenhua paused for two seconds before asking skeptically, “Did you tell him to leave?”
“Of course not! Xiaohui really had something important,” Chu Ning feigned innocence and then changed the subject. “Grandpa, Secretary Jiang isn’t feeling well. Should we go see him first?”
But at the moment, Chu Zhenhua’s primary concerns were his precious grandson and the Chu Corporation.
Before his release, the staff inside had already informed him that the crisis at the Chu Corporation had been completely resolved—thanks to his highly capable granddaughter.
Now, however, he was more worried about what schemes this capable granddaughter might have orchestrated in his absence.
“Secretary Jiang can wait. Let’s go back to the Chu Corporation first,” Chu Zhenhua insisted.
“Grandpa, Yihe Hospital is on the way back. It’ll just take a moment,” Chu Ning patiently persuaded. “Besides, Grandpa Quan has already arranged to meet you today—the same Grandpa Quan from Weisheng, you know?”
The mention of Weisheng made Chu Zhenhua tense up, even a little uneasy.
“Fine, we’ll visit Secretary Jiang first, then meet with Elder Quan,” he seemed eager to delay, choosing the hospital first and even forgetting about the Chu Corporation entirely.
Chu Ning took Chu Zhenhua to the inpatient department of Yihe Hospital.
The nurses at the station recognized Chu Ning and carefully reminded them to be mindful of the patient’s emotional state.
After they left, Chu Ning complained to her colleague on duty, recalling how during Chu Ning’s previous solo visit, something she said or did had caused the patient’s condition to deteriorate. The medical staff had to exert tremendous effort to save him.
When Chu Zhenhua entered the ward, he noticed the nameplate on the bed had been changed to Feng Yiting.
Although he had long suspected that Secretary Jiang might be from the Feng family, seeing the truth laid bare before him still left Chu Zhenhua deeply unsettled.
“Jiang… Secretary Feng, how is your health…?” Chu Zhenhua hesitated, unable to finish his sentence.
Feng Yiting’s condition was worse than when Chu Ning had last seen him. Hearing Chu Zhenhua’s voice, he slowly turned his head to look at the man before him.
Yet, it was Chu Ning’s face that truly captured Feng Yiting’s attention.
“Chu Yunshu! You venomous woman! You’ll pay for this!” Feng Yiting struggled violently once again.
Chu Zhenhua seemed oblivious to the fact that the insults were directed at his daughter. His eyes filled with pity as he leaned forward, gently restraining Feng Yiting. “What’s wrong with you?”
Chu Ning inwardly mocked this display of “brotherly affection.” This was the so-called loyalty and righteousness—kindness extended to outsiders while his own daughter’s life was treated as insignificant.
Feng Yiting’s mind was consumed by the scene of his grandson’s death, his rage unrelenting. Seeing Chu Zhenhua before him, he regarded him as another enemy responsible for his grandson’s demise. “Spare me your hypocrisy! If only I hadn’t shown mercy back then—when I killed your daughter, I should have cursed her soul to the eighteenth level of hell!”
Chu Zhenhua’s mind went blank.
All those times Chu Ning had hinted at the truth, he had refused to believe his “good brother” could have harmed his daughter.
Now, that “good brother” had confessed to it outright.
Chu Ning seized the moment to fan the flames. “Oh? How exactly did you kill me back then?”
Feng Yiting burst into maniacal laughter. “That’s right! All it took was swapping your sedatives, and you—the short-lived wretch—just died. I wasn’t afraid of you when you were alive, so why would I fear you now that you’re dead?”
“Today, I’ll kill you again! To avenge Xiao’er!”
He thrashed wildly, trying to rise. The medical equipment in the room blared alarms, and the staff rushed in with grim expressions.
Unable to process the truth, Chu Zhenhua felt blood rush to his head. His vision darkened, and he collapsed backward—Chu Ning instinctively reached out to steady him.
A nearby nurse quickly pulled out her phone, calling for backup.
–
Without hesitation, Chu Ning arranged for Chu Zhenhua’s hospitalization.
Chu Zhenhua wasn’t seriously injured, but the repeated emotional blows had taken a toll on his body.
He had been recovering somewhat over the past few days, but the latest shock had triggered a cerebrovascular spasm.
Chu Ning relayed the news to Grandpa Quan’s assistant.
Grandpa Quan arrived at Yihe Hospital that afternoon. By then, Chu Zhenhua had regained consciousness but still needed rest and observation.
When the two assistants escorted Grandpa Quan into the room, Chu Zhenhua was momentarily startled.
The Quan family was different from the Chu family—each generation of the Quans was large and thriving. Chu Zhenhua had inherited his family’s legacy solely by virtue of being the only son, whereas Grandpa Quan had fought his way to the top to lead the Quan family today.
“Brother Zhenhua, it’s been many years,” Grandpa Quan said with a smile, his demeanor serene like an immortal sage. He was slightly older than Chu Zhenhua.
“Elder Quan,” Chu Zhenhua greeted him with deep respect.
Although they were of the same generation, their statuses were entirely different. The position of Beijing representative that Chu Zhenhua had only managed to secure in his old age was one that Old Quan had already attained by the age of twenty.
It could be said that the Quan family was the true aristocratic family of Haicheng, a presence with influence across the entire nation.
Chu Ning moved swiftly, promptly fetching a chair for Grandpa Quan and helping him sit down.
Old Quan spoke leisurely, as if making casual conversation: “Brother Zhenhua, we’re both getting on in years. Look at me—how many years has it been since I handed Weisheng over to the next generation?”
Then he glanced out the window: “Your family’s situation was unique. Back then, the higher-ups had high hopes for the combination of Yunshu and Lixia—balancing logic and law. Taking over the Chu Group would have allowed them to achieve great things.”
“But Lixia dropped out of school midway, and Yunshu returned to family life. So much of the work that could have gone to you ended up back in my hands. Even in retirement, I haven’t had a moment’s peace all these years.”
Chu Zhenhua felt as though the scene before him was swaying.
So, in the eyes of the powerful, he was nothing more than an incompetent man clinging to power—not even as capable as his daughter or that law-obsessed bookish girl.
Old Quan knew all too well that men of their age were too stubborn to admit defeat.
But this time, he hadn’t come out of retirement just to reminisce with Chu Zhenhua.
Seeing that Chu Zhenhua remained silent, Old Quan spoke even more bluntly: “Your granddaughter is very capable. Though she hasn’t graduated yet, I can see she’s already ready to take over the Chu Group. Your long-held wish to cultivate an outstanding successor has finally come true.”
“This time, the higher-ups have asked me to help her, and my Quan family will see it through to the end.”
There was a hint of threat in Old Quan’s words.
Chu Zhenhua understood. To Weisheng, the Chu Group was like a rabbit facing an eagle.
Weisheng had numerous real estate projects, yet this earthquake in the property market had only affected their commercial buildings. While other real estate stocks had plummeted to their limits, Weisheng’s shares remained as steady as a mountain.
Weisheng’s strength was in a league of its own.
Chu Zhenhua nodded numbly.
Old Quan’s address of “Brother Zhenhua” was merely a courtesy. With business concluded, he rose to leave.
Once again, only Chu Ning and Chu Zhenhua remained in the room.
“Chu Ning, was it your doing—sending Chu Hui away and bringing Old Quan here?” Chu Zhenhua no longer had the energy for anger.
“What do you mean, my doing?” Chu Ning no longer bothered to pretend. “I merely went with the flow and gave the Chu Group a helping hand.”
“I don’t know if what I did was right or wrong. If I’d been a little dumber, the Chu Group would have been swallowed whole by the wolves you invited in, and Grandfather wouldn’t have to worry now.”
Finally, Chu Zhenhua detected the sarcasm in Chu Ning’s words, but there was nothing he could do about this granddaughter whose wings had already grown strong.
Besides, the Quan family had now made their stance clear—she was the new head of the Chu Group.
“You must have brought the transfer agreement in your bag, haven’t you?” Chu Zhenhua’s eyes dimmed.
Hearing this, Chu Ning pulled the agreement from her bag: “Grandfather is still sharp as ever, foreseeing everything. Since we’re here, why not sign it today?”
With trembling hands, Chu Zhenhua took the agreement and pen, shakily signing his name.
And just like that, his era came to an end.
