- Chapter 25 - The Alluring Movie Queen & The Gloomy Heiress
The wooden door couldn’t withstand the brute force of the burly man for long and was soon broken open.
Chu Ning hid behind the door, holding her breath as she tightly gripped the blood-grooved military knife, ready to strike at any moment.
“Fatty! Get over here! There’s someone here!” The man’s companion shouted from the stairwell.
The man, who had just been about to step into the electrical room, immediately turned and rushed toward his companion.
It seemed they had indeed spotted their target the chaotic, hurried footsteps gradually faded as they ran toward the higher floors.
Only then did Chu Ning’s tense nerves relax, and she gasped for air, her mouth wide open.
Click!
The sound of a door opening came from one of the rooms.
The frantic shuffling of slippers approached the electrical room, putting Chu Ning on high alert once again.
“Xiao Ning, come here quickly,” a girl’s voice called out.
Chu Ning sheathed her dagger, peeked out, then swiftly stepped out of the electrical room and pulled the girl inside with her.
The girl immediately locked the door behind them.
“Xiao Ning, what’s going on? Did you run into trouble?” the girl asked worriedly.
Chu Ning hesitated, unsure where to begin. The people in the neighborhood didn’t know she was the heiress of the Chu Group, she had only told them she lived alone here for her studies.
After a moment of thought, she realized the girl’s room wasn’t in the same numbered unit as hers. The snipers wouldn’t be able to target them here, they were likely safe now.
Seeing that Chu Ning hadn’t answered, the girl continued, “Earlier, when you entered the wrong password at the door, the peephole camera triggered an alarm.”
“I checked the feed and saw you hiding in the electrical room. I was about to come out and let you in, but then I heard two men talking outside. After that, I saw two terrifying-looking guys searching for something through the peephole. I was so scared they’d find you, but I—”
At this point, the girl lowered her head slightly, guilt creeping into her expression.
Chu Ning quickly took her hands. “Sister Wu Qian, you have to make sure you’re safe before helping others! If you had come out earlier today, we’d both be dead.”
Wu Qian’s expression softened slightly, and she asked again, “Who were those men, really?”
Chu Ning steadied herself. Since Wu Qian had essentially saved her today, she owed her the truth. “They were targeting me specifically. I’m the daughter of the current head of the Chu Group.”
“Ah?” Wu Qian gasped in surprise. “The one from the trending searches?”
Chu Ning’s expression stiffened slightly, a hint of awkwardness flashing across her face. When it came to trending searches, the first thing that came to mind was that middle-aged man.
“Then… could you get me an autographed photo of Ye Zhixia? I’m a huge fan of hers!” Wu Qian’s face lit up with an irrepressible grin.
Hearing this, Chu Ning’s awkwardness eased a little, and she quickly agreed before adding, “Don’t worry, those men don’t know I’m hiding here. Once the police arrive, I’ll leave.”
“Wait… where’s Dudu?” Chu Ning frowned.
She had often helped Wu Qian feed the cat and even played with it. Dudu, the orange tabby, had already accepted her as a friend and would always greet her warmly whenever she visited.
Wu Qian also looked puzzled. “Huh? Where is Dudu? Did he slip out when I opened the door earlier?”
The two glanced around before suddenly spotting Dudu sprawled against the floor-to-ceiling window, staring intently outside.
Wu Qian called his name twice, but Dudu didn’t react at all.
“Hey! You little rascal not listening to Mom now!” With that, she walked to the window and scooped up the plump orange tabby in one swift motion.
Dudu struggled, unwilling to leave the windowsill, but couldn’t break free, his eyes fixed in a dazed stare outside.
Yet in the blink of an eye, his expression shifted to curiosity as he began scanning the wide glass pane.
It wasn’t until Wu Qian placed him on the sofa and pulled out a cat treat that he regained his usual liveliness.
Shortly after, the blare of police sirens rose from below. Peering down through the window, the scene was overwhelming squads of officers mobilized en masse, swiftly sealing off every exit of the residential complex, including the parking lot.
Cases involving firearms were treated with utmost seriousness at every level.
Chu Ning bid Wu Qian farewell, instructing her not to tell anyone about their meeting today.
After reuniting with the police, she first led them to her room and pointed out where the bullet had struck.
As they escorted her to the police car, she caught sight of an ambulance rushing in.
The thought that someone might have been hurt because of her sent a wave of sorrow crashing over her.
–
In the hotel at the movie set, Ye Zhixia rinsed her wound vigorously under running water.
Then she sprayed it with the medicinal spray Xiao Mi had brought.
“Xiaxia, why aren’t you using the Ice Jade Bone Pill?” Xiao Mi leaned worriedly against the sink.
Gritting her teeth through the sting of the spray, Ye Zhixia replied, “There’s only one Ice Jade Bone Pill left. Saving it for emergencies.”
“Thank goodness you had this spray, Xiao Mi.”
Xiao Mi’s worried expression flickered with pride. “I’m the best logistics captain, after all.”
Then she grumbled, “Those people are downright vicious, even resorting to weapons! If not for your agility, Xiaxia, you might’ve had to start over!”
After bandaging her arm, Ye Zhixia patted Xiao Mi’s head. “It’s fine. I returned the favor with a few shots, no loss here.”
“Hmph!” Xiao Mi fumed. “Why didn’t you just finish them off?”
Ye Zhixia smirked secretly. She’d aimed for those two in places unfit for Xiao Mi’s innocent ears.
But then she teased with a mischievous grin, “So, what do you think of that little orange tabby?”
After Chu Ning took refuge in Wu Qian’s home, Ye Zhixia and Xiao Mi had flown invisibly outside the window, keeping watch until the police arrived.
Turns out, invisibility only worked on humans Dudu the tabby had spotted the striking Xiao Mi and nearly bolted through the window in panic.
“Hmph!” Xiao Mi huffed indignantly. “I am not a cat!”
Ye Zhixia laughed heartily, though her mind was already strategizing for Chu Ning.
The enemy’s motives were too clear-cut. Abandoning her current security detail meant the moment they tracked her down, she’d be in grave danger.
They needed to get Chu Ning back to the Chu family estate as soon as possible. But for that to happen, the paternity test had to be completed first.
Until then, they could only rely on the police to swiftly dismantle that group.
As Ye Zhixia expected, Chu Ning would likely contact her soon.
Exhausted from the day and with filming tomorrow, it was time to rest.
–
At the police station, Chu Ning couldn’t shake a foreboding sense of unease after the day’s danger.
Initially, she’d suspected Chu Tianheng and his son were behind the attack. But such lawless actions were beyond even the Chu family’s audacity, someone of Chu Tianheng and Chu Xiao’s stature simply wouldn’t have the means.
There had to be another force lurking in the shadows.
Yet as far as she knew, the Chu family had no sworn enemies. Who could it be?
Chu Ning selectively recounted the events of the night, omitting the part where she sought help from Wu Qian.
What she was most relieved about was that Chu Hui was still living at school and the old master Chu was in the hospital. If this incident had happened at the school or the hospital, it would have escalated into an internationally concerning event. The people behind it weren’t reckless enough to go that far.
However, the case had already been classified as a major incident by the Haicheng police, and Chu Ning was placed under 24-hour protection by the authorities.
Returning to the Chu family and expelling that trio of relatives was now an urgent matter. She needed to mobilize her security forces immediately.
Chu Ning quickly fell asleep at the accommodation arranged by the police, preparing for the next day’s actions.
The following morning, Chu Ning slipped past the police escort and took a taxi to Tianxing Entertainment.
Meanwhile, on the film set, Ye Zhixia was puzzled.
Based on past experience, Chu Ning, who had always trusted her, should have immediately discussed last night’s events with her. But now it was already the next day, and there was no sign of Chu Ning reaching out.
What exactly was the problem?
Ye Zhixia held her phone, staring at the silent screen all morning.
“Xiaxia…”
“Xiaxia.”
“Ye Zhixia!”
Director Kong Sen had to call her name three times before Ye Zhixia snapped out of her daze and looked up in a fluster.
“It’s your scene,” Director Kong said, visibly displeased.
But since Ye Zhixia was usually professional and rarely spaced out like this, he held back from criticizing her.
Ye Zhixia handed her phone to her assistant, adjusted her emotions, and stepped in front of the camera.
Her earlier distracted demeanor vanished instantly, replaced by an expression of urgency and panic.
Coincidentally, this scene was about Bai Xin’s character, a pampered young lady facing a crisis at home, with the general (Ye Zhixia’s character) worrying for her.
“What did you say? What happened to A-Yun’s household?” Ye Zhixia’s eyes brimmed with worry and fear, as if terrified that her beloved might be implicated.
The actor playing the servant was so intimidated by Ye Zhixia’s presence that he stammered, “M-Miss Yun… was taken away by the yamen officers…”
“The yamen officers in the border town are notorious for extracting confessions under torture. No! I can’t let A-Yun suffer such humiliation!” Ye Zhixia’s eyes turned bloodshot, as if she were on the verge of madness.
She then grabbed a sword from the table and strode out of the room with resolute steps.
“Cut!” Director Kong called for a stop.
Since the shoot hadn’t been delayed, he didn’t press Ye Zhixia about her earlier inattentiveness.
After finishing the scene, Ye Zhixia sat back down on a low stool and resumed staring blankly at her phone.
Bai Xin, who was waiting nearby for her turn, noticed Ye Zhixia’s odd state and guessed it must be related to Chu Ning. She picked up her own phone and started chatting with her sister.
A flash of surprise crossed Bai Xin’s eyes before she sidled up to Ye Zhixia and asked softly, “Xiaxia-jie, are you waiting for news from Miss Chu?”
Ye Zhixia hadn’t noticed Bai Xin approaching and was startled by the sudden voice.
“Ah…” She didn’t bother denying it. “Yeah, that girl hasn’t contacted me since last night. I’m a little worried.”
Bai Xin bent down, blinking her round almond eyes. “Then why don’t you just call or text her? Unless… Xiaxia-jie is feeling shy?”
“Shy?” The question struck a chord with Ye Zhixia.
That’s right. Given Chu Ning’s current perception, she shouldn’t know what happened last night. So sending a message or calling to check in would be perfectly reasonable, wouldn’t it?
A smile instantly spread across her face, and she gave Bai Xin a thumbs-up. “Xiao Bai, you’re a genius.”
Bai Xin was baffled by the sudden praise and muttered softly, “I just gave you an out, no need to get so worked up…”
When lunch break came around, Ye Zhixia picked up her phone and dialed Chu Ning’s number. Strangely, there was no response on the other end.
Just as she was puzzled, a minor extra nearby whispered mysteriously to someone else, “Did you know? Something big happened at Tianxing Entertainment’s headquarters!”
Ye Zhixia quickly moved closer to listen.
Another extra nearby, hearing this, perked up and pulled out a handful of sunflower seeds from their pocket, eager for gossip. “Spill the details! What happened?”
