- Chapter 24 - The Alluring Actress and the Gloomy Heiress
However, the next second, Ye Zhixia realized that Chu Ning detested Chen Yufen so much that allowing her back to the Chu family couldn’t possibly be Chu Ning’s idea.
The only person in the entire Chu family who could make such a decision was Old Master Chu.
But Chen Yufen was clearly a threat to Chu Ning. Letting her return to the Chu family would undoubtedly endanger Chu Ning’s safety.
Moreover, Xu Miaomiao’s earlier antics served as a reminder, thinking that someone would “tuck their tail between their legs once exposed” was the logic of a normal person. Those with malicious intent would stop at nothing to strike again and again.
Though Ye Zhixia’s expression remained displeased, she relaxed against the soft cushion and calmly asked, “Why?”
Chu Ning wasn’t too happy about it either. “Grandfather said that Chen Yufen isn’t the only enemy, and no matter what, I need to move out first.”
“Allowing Chen Yufen back to the Chu family is ostensibly to save face for Chu Tianheng and Chu Xiao, but in reality, it’s to give me an excuse to leave the Chu residence.”
Ye Zhixia sighed. “Absurd! The true members of the Chu family have to move out while outsiders take over the nest.”
It was rare to find someone who always shared her indignation, and Chu Ning’s agitated mood eased slightly.
“Grandfather said this is only temporary. Soon, he’ll drive both Chu Tianheng and Chen Yufen out of the Chu family,” she reassured Ye Zhixia instead.
Ye Zhixia’s eyes lit up. “Oh? Does the old master have a plan?”
Chu Ning nodded, turning to retrieve two sealed bags from her small purse and handing them to Ye Zhixia.
“These are hairs I collected from Chu Tianheng and Chu Xiao’s pillows. If we use them for a paternity test this time, we can prove their relationship. I’m absolutely certain!”
Ye Zhixia took the sealed bags, carefully examined the strands inside, and then wore an awkward expression.
“Ningning, I need to tell you something these hairs can’t be used for a paternity test,” she said with an embarrassed smile.
Chu Ning looked puzzled. “Why? Paternity tests can use hair.”
Ye Zhixia frowned and explained, “Hair is keratin. For a paternity test, you need the hair follicle at the root that’s where the viable genetic material is.”
Chu Ning’s face first showed a hint of embarrassment, then she looked like a child who had done something wrong. “So the hair I collected now can’t be used for the test? But how do I get hair with follicles attached?”
Ye Zhixia also found it a bit of a challenge. “The best way is to pluck it directly from their heads.”
Chu Ning’s eyes sparkled as an idea struck her. She then asked, “Chu Xiao’s will be easy, but Chu Tianheng’s will be hard to get. Can we test the relationship between me and Chu Xiao instead?”
Ye Zhixia had some understanding of paternity tests, but according to genetic principles, testing half-siblings would be slightly more complicated.
After a moment of thought, she replied, “It’s best to use Chu Tianheng’s. If that’s impossible, your brother’s would work too. For brothers, testing the Y chromosome is enough.”
In an instant, Chu Ning’s tension melted away as she broke into a smile. “That’s good, then.”
Ye Zhixia had initially wanted to ask how Chu Ning planned to handle Chu Xiao’s hair, but she couldn’t solve every problem for her. So she said nothing more.
As the sun set in the west, the moon rose in the southeast, gleaming like a silver-white jade plate.
Seeing that it was getting late, Ye Zhixia escorted Chu Ning to the main road near the film studio and urged her to go home and rest.
On the way, they happened to run into Bai Xin and her assistant out for a stroll.
“Xiaxia-jie, Miss Chu, what a coincidence.” Bai Xin’s eyes curved into crescents, her expression bright and innocent. “Are you two out for a walk?”
Ye Zhixia smiled lightly. “I’m just seeing Ningning off to her car.”
Noticing the nearly half-meter distance between them, Bai Xin pouted slightly in dissatisfaction.
Could it be these two aren’t in that kind of relationship yet?
“It’s so late, is it safe for Miss Chu to go back alone?” Bai Xin hinted to Ye Zhixia.
But Chu Ning shook her head. “It’s fine.”
Bai Xin nodded politely to bid them farewell.
On her way back to the hotel, however, she asked her assistant, “Do you think Ye Zhixia and Chu Ning make a good match?”
The honest-looking assistant with braids adjusted her black-framed glasses. “Huh? But they’re both girls…”
Bai Xin shot her a disdainful look. “What’s wrong with that? Girls are the most wonderful beings in the world!”
Then she smiled, clasped her hands, and strode forward, declaring, “Time for this love bodyguard to make her appearance again.”
The somewhat dull-witted assistant trailed behind, murmuring in a voice as faint as a mosquito’s hum, “Girls are indeed the most wonderful~”
–
Under a moonlit sky dotted with sparse stars, Chu Ning returned to her upscale apartment complex.
The scattered lights from the buildings intertwined with the moonlight, casting a hazy white glow over the neighborhood.
Lost in thought about how to obtain Chu Xiao’s hair, Chu Ning remained distracted even as she stepped out of the elevator.
Absentmindedly fishing her keys from her bag, she turned her gaze toward her door, only to startle at the sight of a figure kneeling there. The keys slipped from her hand and clattered loudly to the ground.
“What are you kneeling here for?” Chu Ning’s voice held a mix of confusion and anger as she bent to pick up the keys.
The kneeling figure slowly turned her head, pleading, “Ningning, please forgive me. I truly know I was wrong.”
A cold glint flickered in Chu Ning’s eyes.
The other gossipers in the Qiuqiu group had already been sued for public apologies and compensation.
For these wealthy heirs, the monetary compensation meant little, it was the public apology that truly bruised their pride.
As for Li Jinqiu, it went without saying that her family must have forced her to come and apologize.
This time, Chu Ning had played for keeps. Unless Li Jinqiu admitted her wrongdoing, Qibao Company wouldn’t see another cent from the Chu family.
Tears as large as beans rolled down Li Jinqiu’s face. “Ningning, my dad hit me so hard I lost hearing in my left ear. I’ve already been punished. Please forgive me. I swear I’ll never betray you again.”
“Alright, I forgive you.”
Chu Ning’s swift reply caught Li Jinqiu off guard.
“Huh?” she blurted out reflexively.
Chu Ning arched an eyebrow. “I said I forgive you. What? Not satisfied?”
Kneeling on the ground, Li Jinqiu was momentarily at a loss. She had prepared countless lines, anticipating that Chu Ning would mock her or even hit or scold her.
But none of that happened, rendering all her rehearsed theatrics useless.
Snapping back to reality, Li Jinqiu hurriedly denied, “No, no! Ningning, if you’re not blaming me, I’m grateful beyond words. How could I be unsatisfied?”
“Then what about my father’s company’s funding…” she ventured further.
Chu Ning was prepared. Standing tall before Li Jinqiu, she declared haughtily, “I’ll invest one-third of the agreed amount. The equity transfer terms remain as previously discussed.”
Although Li Jinqiu didn’t understand business transactions, buying the same equity at one-third the price was clearly a loss for the Li family no matter how you calculated it.
Her face showed distress, knowing Chu Ning didn’t truly believe her apology. She shuffled forward on her knees for two steps. “Ningning, you’re still angry with me, aren’t you?”
Chu Ning disdainfully took two steps back, afraid she might lunge at her.
“Stop. Get up. I said I wouldn’t hold your actions against you, and I meant it. As for business matters, let your father handle them.”
With that, she tilted her head toward the elevator, effectively dismissing Li Jinqiu without any intention of letting her inside.
Li Jinqiu didn’t argue. She simply said, “Alright,” and stood up to leave.
Watching her retreating figure, Chu Ning felt a wave of unease.
This apartment was no longer safe to stay in!
She opened the door and hurried inside, so flustered that she even left the key in the lock.
Once inside, she didn’t turn on the lights. Instead, she moved through the darkness into the bedroom, quickly pulling a few changes of clothes from the wardrobe and stuffing them into a canvas bag before rushing out.
Just as she stepped out the door, a bullet shattered the glass and struck the metal door she was about to close!
The sharp bang, the sound of a bullet hitting metal was something she’d heard before at shooting ranges.
Her suspicions were confirmed!
Chu Ning pulled the door shut behind her, dropped to the ground, and scrambled toward the concealed emergency stairwell.
She had long suspected Li Jinqiu was connected to the repeated attempts on her life. Whether Li Jinqiu had led them here herself or been followed, her visit tonight, kneeling in apology outside Chu Ning’s apartment had undoubtedly exposed her location.
But Chu Ning never expected they’d dare to use firearms in broad daylight, in a high-end residential complex no less!
If there was already a sniper positioned across the way, they must also have people inside the building hunting her down. She had to escape fast.
Out of the frying pan and into the fire!
Now, she had to gamble.
Logically, someone fleeing would either go up or down, so her pursuers would likely cover both ends and sweep floor by floor.
The emergency stairwell wasn’t safe either, they’d have people stationed there.
But this apartment complex had multiple escape routes, including a rarely used, inconspicuous emergency passage hidden in an obscure corner.
She dashed straight for that hidden staircase, half-running, half-tumbling down to the 13th floor.
A single woman who kept cats lived on the 13th floor. She wasn’t a local, and whenever she went home for holidays, she’d ask neighbors to feed her pets.
During her senior year of high school, when Chu Ning needed extra tutoring money, she’d occasionally help feed the cats during short breaks.
The woman’s door had an electronic keypad lock. During the May Day holiday, she’d given Chu Ning the passcode to take care of the cats. Only a month had passed surely the code hadn’t been changed yet.
Clutching that slim hope, Chu Ning quickly punched in the code.
Beep-beep, the sound of an incorrect password.
Damn it! The code had been changed!
She ducked into the floor’s central electrical room, barricading the door with stacked wooden planks inside. Then she texted the building’s security and sent an emergency alert via 12110, the police SMS hotline.
Now came the agonizing wait, who would arrive first? Her rescuers or her attackers?
Footsteps sounded outside the door. Judging by their urgency and weight, they belonged to two men.
Footsteps approached from a distance, circled around the floor, and finally stopped outside the electrical room door.
The person outside tried to push the door open but found some resistance.
“Come here quick, help me break this door open!” a muffled male voice shouted.
Chu Ning covered her mouth and pulled out the small knife she always carried, ready to fight for her life against whoever came in.
“You do it yourself, I’ll check over there first,” another male voice refused.
Hearing this, the man at the door immediately began ramming the electrical room door with force.
