The Popular Darling Says She’s Pregnant with My Child - Chapter 29 .1
Wen Shiyu did not expect that when she opened her door early in the morning, she would see Su Yan already standing in the corridor. It almost seemed as if she had been waiting right in front of her door.
Upon seeing her, Su Yan seemed to hesitate for a moment before speaking, her voice as steady as ever: “Do you want to go surfing?”
Wen Shiyu knew that Su Yan likely had something else she wanted to say to her in private, and she herself indeed needed an opportunity to explain the recent chaotic situation to Su Yan. Thus, she nodded: “Okay.”
To her surprise, Su Yan actually took her surfing first. Moreover, she taught her very diligently.
The sea breeze carried a salty, damp scent. Su Yan would occasionally move closer, using her hand to lift Wen Shiyu’s wrist or steady her board. Throughout the process, she never brought up any other topics. Since Su Yan didn’t speak, Wen Shiyu didn’t feel it was appropriate to bring it up abruptly.
It wasn’t until the two returned to the shade of the beach umbrella, drinking icy coconut water and resting, that Su Yan looked out at the distant horizon where the sea met the sky and spoke slowly.
“Seraphina… is the most outstanding child of the Cavendish generation.”
“Though there are some cousins, none can compare to her in terms of talent, temperament, or the expectations placed upon her by the family.”
She paused, turning her face to look at Wen Shiyu: “She once had a sister, but she died very young. Perhaps because of this, her mother never had other children.”
“The Cavendish family… has always valued marriage alliances and bloodlines. But sometimes, the more one desires to have offspring with superior talent like Seraphina, the more risk one must take. Some children become sacrifices to that risk. The transmission of genes is sometimes just that unreasonable, full of uncertainty.”
Wen Shiyu’s hand holding the coconut water paused slightly; she was somewhat stunned. She hadn’t expected Su Yan to talk about these things.
She had heard of this. Certain genetic combinations are prone to producing geniuses, but they are also prone to producing autism. Su Yan was likely hinting at this two-sided nature.
Wen Shiyu’s heart felt heavy. Unfortunately, in this matter, she was perhaps more like Seraphina’s sister. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been abandoned as an orphan.
Su Yan continued at this point, “So Seraphina will likely… become the sole heir of the next generation of the family. Her parents’ choice for her future partner will inevitably be extremely strict. I think… Seraphina herself probably understands this. That’s why she said when she was little that she wanted to find someone who matched her perfectly. Now, she insists on keeping this child… perhaps, it is also a silent form of resistance for her.”
She sighed softly: “It’s just that I’m not sure, when family responsibility and personal feelings are truly placed before her, how Seraphina will choose. Or rather… if she even has a choice at all.”
Wen Shiyu originally thought Su Yan had come to warn her not to have any improper thoughts about Seraphina. She hadn’t expected that Su Yan’s words seemed more like a reminder out of concern for her.
This made her reflect that Su Yan was indeed someone who knew how to express herself. She was just about to speak, to say that she understood she couldn’t further develop a relationship with Seraphina.
However, Su Yan’s tone shifted, calmly mentioning herself: “The Su family… though not possessing the same history and heritage as the Cavendish family, is still considered an international commercial group.”
Wen Shiyu was stunned for a moment: “…Huh?”
“Furthermore, I have an older brother and an older sister above me, both Alphas. One has already entered into a good marriage alliance, and the other is essentially confirmed to take over the family’s main business operations.” Su Yan’s profile flushed slightly. “So, my parents… don’t have any mandatory requirements or expectations for me.”
Wen Shiyu’s eyes widened slightly, not quite reacting to what Su Yan suddenly meant by saying this. She hurriedly explained: “Su Yan, actually… it was Xia Te, she gave me an idea.”
She completely explained the plan between the two of them to Su Yan, mentioning that her pretense of having designs on power was merely a tactic to make Seraphina dislike her.
After Su Yan finished listening, a look of realization crossed her face, and she then seemed to realize the potential implications of her own words just now; a faint, indiscernible flush rose to the tips of her ears.
“…So that’s how it is,” she whispered. “Xia Te indeed always has many trick ideas. However, as for how effective they are… it’s hard to say.”
On the other side, inside the villa, Seraphina was staying with Xia Te.
Xia Te leaned affectionately against Seraphina, holding a tablet computer and flipping through the latest season’s fashion catalog. With a hint of coquettishness, she asked, “Seraphina, look at these outfits, which one do you think suits me better?”
Seraphina’s tone was gentle and patient. “Hmm… this color complements you. This one has a strong sense of design; it should look very playful on you. I think they both suit you quite well.”
“Really?” Xia Te laughed happily. She had always loved listening to Seraphina’s suggestions and was happy to wear clothes Seraphina said looked good. That way, she could make Seraphina like her more.
Especially when she was young, Seraphina had just lost her sister and was deeply affected. Every time Seraphina looked at her, her eyes held a watery, soft light. Her speech was incredibly gentle.
Unfortunately, although Seraphina’s tone was still gentle now, her gaze would occasionally drift toward the window or the direction of the villa entrance. There was a faint, indiscernible feeling as if she were waiting for something. She wasn’t completely focused on their conversation.
Xia Te noticed this and asked tentatively: “Is Wen Shiyu… off surfing with Su Yan again?”
Seraphina nodded. In that moment, into that gentle, almost sisterly attitude she held for friends, a trace of complex emotion belonging to a young girl’s heart—which Xia Te rarely saw—silently seeped in.
“Who knows. She didn’t even tell me.” She frowned first, but then the corners of her mouth curved slightly. “But it doesn’t matter, she’ll come back to find me.”
Xia Te was stunned. This tone, this expression… something was wrong. Logically, shouldn’t Seraphina be disliking Wen Shiyu more and more?
Just then, Seraphina received a phone call from home. She walked to the window and spoke a few words in a low voice.
“My health is fine, and I feel… the baby is developing very well,” she said to the person on the other end. But clearly, hearing her say this made her family even more worried. They insisted on sending a trusted family doctor over to perform a detailed check-up on her.
Although Seraphina was somewhat reluctant, she knew her family had already reluctantly agreed to her coming out on this vacation; she couldn’t refuse such an arrangement again.
At this time, Wen Shiyu and Su Yan also returned.
Just as Wen Shiyu was about to walk into the villa, Su Yan lightly caught her wrist at the door.
“Actually, there might be a way to let you see clearly what Seraphina’s current attitude toward you really is,” Su Yan whispered, her gaze sweeping toward the villa. “For Xia Te’s tactics to work, the premise is that Seraphina dislikes you, right?”
Wen Shiyu froze. Did Seraphina… not dislike her?
Even if Seraphina’s attitude toward her had improved lately, she had always assumed it was just forced by the pheromone needs during pregnancy. Seraphina seemed to have no reason… not to dislike her, right?
Seeing her lost in thought, Su Yan used a bit of force and suddenly pulled Wen Shiyu a little closer. From the angle of the villa’s living room floor-to-ceiling window, their figures would appear closer than their actual distance due to the forced perspective.
Wen Shiyu was somewhat dazed by her action.
Su Yan said softly, her face rarely showing a hint of bashfulness, “…If you were going to kiss someone, what would you usually do?”
Wen Shiyu was a bit bewildered by her question and hadn’t had time to make any reaction.
“Wen Shiyu!”
Seraphina’s voice, carrying obvious displeasure, already came from the villa entrance. She walked out quickly, her breathing slightly disordered. Her eyes were fixed on the two people still standing together.
Fortunately, the two were just standing face to face. They hadn’t kissed, and Seraphina seemed to breathe a sigh of relief. But that overly close posture was clearly enough to make Seraphina dissatisfied. Especially since Su Yan was still holding one of Wen Shiyu’s hands.
Seraphina beckoned with her hand, “Wen Shiyu, come here.”
Su Yan could only let go. Wen Shiyu walked over to her obediently; she even seemed to think she was walking too slowly. She stepped forward a few paces and directly pulled Wen Shiyu away: “You, accompany me for the check-up this afternoon.”
As if feeling this command was too abrupt, she gave herself a stiff reason, her earlobes turning red: “After all… it has something to do with you too.”
Only then did Xia Te follow them out. She had seen Seraphina clearly still on the phone just now, but she had suddenly run out halfway through the call. She didn’t quite understand why. Now that she saw Seraphina was going for a check-up, she quickly asked: “Can I go too?”
Seraphina glanced at her and shook her head: “You shouldn’t go.”
Xia Te watched as the two of them just left. She bit her lip. She always felt that once Wen Shiyu appeared, Seraphina’s attention would be immediately diverted. It was truly infuriating.
Su Yan watched this scene and sighed softly, turning to Xia Te and asking in a low voice: “You… exactly what did you have Wen Shiyu do?”
In the afternoon, inside the examination room, Dr. Frank arrived in person. Wen Shiyu made eye contact with him but didn’t dare to greet him.
Although Seraphina had taken the initiative to ask Wen Shiyu to accompany her, once inside, she sat with pursed lips, sulking and ignoring her. Wen Shiyu could only sit quietly on the chair nearby, watching the nurse skillfully draw Seraphina’s blood.
Next, Dr. Frank handed over a measuring tape, asking the nurse to measure the changes in Seraphina’s waistline. Wen Shiyu stepped forward to take it, replacing the nurse. She carefully encircled Seraphina’s still-slender waist, her movements gentle and meticulous.
