The Pitiful Guy I Saved Is a Possessive Big Shot - Chapter 28
The discussion about staying at school was put aside for a moment. Shi’s father had traveled a long way back and it was time for him to wash up and rest. After all, he had been busy on his business trip for a long time and had jet lag to deal with.
Since his eldest son’s rejection was too obvious, the father poured all his affection into his younger son. After a long period of fussing over him, he still felt reluctant to leave for upstairs. While straightening Shi Qingning’s collar, he couldn’t help but lean down and give the boy a big hug.
His slight stubble rubbed against Shi Qingning’s cheek, which stung a little.
Behind them, Shi’s mother laughed in frustration and patted the father. “Honestly, Xiao Ning has delicate skin. Don’t make the child cry.”
The father straightened up obediently. “I didn’t use force.” He couldn’t repeat the mistakes he made when the child was little. He leaned down again to kiss his wife’s cheek and nose before finally going upstairs.
Sitting on the sofa, Shi Qingning looked up at them with a patch of red on his cheek. Madam Shi laughed helplessly, used a silk scarf to carefully wipe the red mark on his face, and said after making sure he was okay, “Don’t be mad at Dad. He just missed you too much.”
To be honest, seeing her younger son looking so well-behaved, the mother herself felt a sudden urge to kiss him. But since the child was grown up and she feared he might get annoyed, she saw him upstairs instead.
After watching Shi Qingning and Bai Yexi enter the room together, Madam Shi turned back. “Xiao Yi,” she called out to Shi Yi, who still looked a bit displeased. “Come with me.”
Shi Qingning and Bai Yexi returned to the study to do homework. The plate of strawberries was still on the table, giving off a very sweet scent. Bai Yexi walked over, and seeing him pick up a knife, Shi Qingning asked, “Are you going to cut them?”
“Yes,” Bai Yexi replied softly. “Let’s share.”
Shi Qingning lowered his head to look at his problems. In the time it took to finish two multiple-choice questions, a small plate of cut strawberries was placed by his hand. He glanced at it casually, but his gaze froze.
Why were they all… the tips of the strawberries?
Shi Qingning looked up and saw Bai Yexi holding a small bowl for himself, which was filled entirely with the parts of the strawberries other than the tips.
What kind of habit was this? Shi Qingning asked in confusion, “Why cut them like this?”
Bai Yexi had already poked a piece with a fork and said, “Let’s share.”
Is this what “sharing” means?? Everyone knows the tip is the sweetest part. Shi Qingning was about to say it wasn’t necessary, but then he heard the boy speak.
“The part near the stem is cold. Your stomach won’t be able to handle it.” Bai Yexi glanced at the small plate by Shi Qingning’s hand. “Eating fewer than ten at a time should be fine. When the weather gets warmer, you can have more.”
Shi Qingning nodded instinctively. “Okay.”
It wasn’t until he had eaten two strawberry tips that he realized something. It was the same as when he touched the silver chain last time; Bai Yexi said not to touch materials if he wasn’t sure what they were, and he had agreed immediately.
Shi Qingning discovered that, regarding his physical health, he seemed to habitually listen to “Mint.”
They finished their homework around 8:00 PM, which was usually the time for Bai Yexi to head back. But tonight, a light snow suddenly began to fall outside. It was early spring, but the “Late Spring Cold” was still powerful; the weather was as cold as mid-winter.
The weather forecast showed the snow wouldn’t stop until dawn. Shi Qingning ran to the floor-to-ceiling window to look. Outside, the snow was fluttering heavily. Though the night was dark, it couldn’t hide the beautiful scenery.
“It’s starting to snow,” Shi Qingning turned around. “Mint, stay over tonight.”
Standing in front of the window with the snow falling behind him, the boy turned back, his eyes reflecting only one person. By the table, Bai Yexi’s fingertips moved slightly, and his lips pulled into a tight line.
He said, “It’s cold by the window. There’s a draft.”
Shi Qingning didn’t think much of it, but when he closed the curtains and walked back, he couldn’t help but let out a muffled sneeze. He obediently let the other watch him put on a coat, wrapping himself in an extra layer.
After being sick for many years, Shi Qingning was used to his body being sensitive. But after meeting Bai Yexi, he realized that someone else could be so constantly mindful and worried about him.
As he was thinking, the zipper of his coat was pulled up to his chest by a pair of pale, long fingers. Bai Yexi looked down at him and asked, “Is there a guest room?”
“Yes!” Shi Qingning was happy. “It’s right next to my bedroom!”
Bai Yexi stayed in the room next to Shi Qingning’s. The Shi family lacked nothing; there were clean linens and pajamas. Bai Yexi watched Shi Qingning volunteer to help get the guest room ready. The boy hummed a soft song while looking for things.
After listening for a moment, Bai Yexi recognized it as the serenade he had once played for him. The melody was pleasant, and the boy had added his own words: “Snowy night, guest-staying night, tonight we should sleep well~”
Before leaving him to rest, the boy closed the door halfway and peeked his head back in. His round eyes were bright as he waved his fingers.
“Goodnight!”
“Goodnight,” Bai Yexi replied normally.
After the room became quiet, the silent person didn’t make a judgment until he had counted 360 heartbeats. He is still alive. It is real.
Next door, Shi Qingning knew nothing of this. He was simply in a visibly good mood, taking his medicine ten minutes earlier than usual without trying to hide from the bitterness as he normally did.
Shi Qingning slept very soundly that night. It was a rare good sleep. Although he still dreamed, the dream wasn’t dizzying or chaotic. Upon waking up, he even rarely connected a piece of the novel’s plot.
Perhaps because he had been thinking about the second pursuer in the novel, Qin Zhishen, he dreamed of him that night. The dream connected the later parts of the story. Shi Qingning had originally thought Qin Zhishen was a complete liar, but he didn’t expect that after Qin Zhishen robbed Bai Yexi of his funds to give to his “White Moonlight,” he didn’t just disappear.
Qin Zhishen actually went back. He tracked down Bai Yexi again and spent a huge amount of effort and his own savings to clear the path for him, watching as Bai Yexi finally escaped the control of his heartless biological family.
Dreams have no logic. When Shi Qingning woke up to sort it out, he found it strange. What is he doing? Who does Qin Zhishen actually like? Is he a professional ferryman who just likes stepping on two boats?
Shi Qingning began to consider that it might not just be a problem with his dream; he had already learned that this melodramatic novel itself had no logic. Of course, scumbags in reality were like that too. They always had strange ways of making up their own twisted excuses.
At the end of the plot, Bai Yexi left the wealthy family, stayed far away from Qin Zhishen, and lived a peaceful life alone. Although this extra bit of Qin Zhishen’s regret was added, Shi Qingning felt it didn’t change much. The fact that the protagonist’s money was stolen by Qin Zhishen was set in stone.
I need to gather information on this person soon.
Because he was sorting through the plot, Shi Qingning almost woke up late and was urged twice before coming downstairs. He didn’t know what Madam Shi and Shi Yi had talked about last night, but at breakfast, the decision for the two of them to stay in an apartment near the school was finalized.
It was already the weekend. Once they finished packing, they could move in next week. This week happened to be a rest week, so Bai Yexi went back to pack his bags while Shi Qingning made an appointment to meet his cousin and Kong Que.
Because she had finished her winter break homework well, Shi Xiao Lin’s academic performance had been good since school started. As soon as her mother heard Shi Qingning had an appointment, she let her go immediately. Kong Que attended No. 4 Middle School; they had self-study on weekends, but they could choose whether to go, making it much freer than No. 29 Middle School.
Shi Qingning’s rest time was precious. After a few words of greeting, he got straight to the point. “Do you guys know Qin Zhishen? The youngest son of the Qin family in the capital.”
Shi Qingning had searched before. There was some information about Qin Zhishen’s awards online, but the descriptions were very generic and didn’t show much. Also, Qin Zhishen wasn’t very famous yet, and not even a single photo had been made public.
Shi Xiao Lin looked blank, but Kong Que thought for a bit and said, “It sounds a bit familiar.” He took out his phone. “Let me check.”
Shi Xiao Lin said, “Good, if there’s a problem, find him. He’s the social butterfly of Haicheng.”
Kong Que smiled. “I just met a new physics tutor, very good. I’ll recommend him to your aunt next time.”
Shi Xiao Lin screamed, “I was wrong! I was wrong!”
Only then was Kong Que satisfied. He searched for a while and showed his phone screen. “I remembered correctly. In elementary school, he and I attended the same summer camp.” On the screen was a webpage listing names. “I didn’t add him, but this overseas summer camp is still running. The official website has the list from that year. Oh right, there are internal records too.”
Shi Qingning asked, “Is there detailed information about him?”
Kong Que said, “It’s not official info, but I remember we made a class yearbook back then and archived the photos online.”
“A yearbook?” Shi Xiao Lin asked. “The paper kind?”
Kong Que nodded. “Don’t you guys have them too?”
“Who writes those anymore?” Shi Xiao Lin said. She wanted to say it was too old-fashioned, but thinking of the physics tutor, she swallowed her words. “We write 30-question surveys now and post them directly on our social space.” Among middle schoolers, QQ was much more popular than WeChat.
“Online is indeed convenient,” Kong Que said. “I remember the summer camp kept an archive for promotion; otherwise, the paper one would probably be gone.”
This summer camp belonged to a famous education group. Kong Que logged into his account and successfully found the yearbook file from back then. “Qin Zhishen, Qin…” He quickly found the name. “Here.”
Shi Qingning immediately saw the photo on the page. It was a sticker-style photo. The boy in the picture had his chin tilted up slightly and the corners of his eyes turned up, looking refined yet sharp. Fairly speaking, he was good-looking.
But perhaps because the person in the photo was too young, Shi Qingning didn’t recall anything extra upon seeing Qin Zhishen’s childish face. He scrolled down and saw the handwriting. Qin Zhishen was only eight or nine then, but his writing already had some style; he had clearly practiced calligraphy.
The questions in the yearbook were very detailed, and Shi Qingning did see a few pieces of useful information. However, Qin Zhishen’s answers were clearly different from what Shi Qingning had expected.
[Who do you hate the most: People who are cold and acting too cool]
[What do you hate doing the most: Being pestered persistently]
Shi Qingning couldn’t help but feel confused. He looked up again. The handwriting was elegant, and the top line was indeed Qin Zhishen’s name.
Then why did Qin Zhishen fall for Bai Yexi later? Isn’t he the type he hates the most? Is it just because Mint is too good-looking?
Thinking of Bai Yexi, Shi Qingning dazed off slightly. Although in his memory, the protagonist never seemed to return Qin Zhishen’s feelings, if it were “Mint”…
Shi Qingning recalled the strawberries and the spring snow from last night, and even more small, hard-to-notice details from before.
When “Mint” falls in love, he will definitely be very gentle.
