- Chapter 13 - Day 13 of the Audition
At the end of the hallway, in the classroom, the theme song’s music gradually reached its finale.
A girl in the pink F-class uniform looked nervous as she moved to the rhythm, executing well-practiced kicks and jumps with precision. Her slender yet toned calves stretched taut, revealing delicate but powerful muscle lines.
“Chasing the call of my heart, moving forward without hesitation.”
As the final drumbeat faded, Nan Zhi held her ending pose, panting as she looked at Xu Silan.
After Zhu Ran’s intensive afternoon training, Nan Zhi’s performance had become even more polished and complete than Tang Keyue’s.
What’s more, this time, dancing in front of Xu Silan, she hadn’t made a single mistake.
Confident, Nan Zhi lowered her raised hands and flashed a victory sign behind her back at Zhu Ran.
“Fail.”
Xu Silan arched an eyebrow and uttered the two words coolly.
Nan Zhi’s eyes widened in shock, but before she could speak, Zhu Ran’s voice sounded from behind her.
“May I ask, Teacher Xu, what’s the reason for failing her?”
Leaning back in her chair, Xu Silan tilted her chin slightly. Though seated, she seemed to be looking down at them. A faint smile played on her striking face, laced with light mockery.
“Zhu Ran, do you think she did well?”
Zhu Ran pressed her lips together and nodded. “I believe Teacher Xu can see that Nan Zhi has surpassed herself and done her best.”
“She danced decently barely passable,” Xu Silan remarked indifferently. “But you only taught her the moves. Did you forget to teach her facial expressions?”
Her gaze swept over Nan Zhi’s face as she narrowed her eyes slightly. “Your movements are smooth, and the choreography was executed well. But your expression kept screaming, ‘I can’t do this.’ Little Nan, are you planning to face the audience with that same look during the live broadcast?”
As Xu Silan’s words landed, both Nan Zhi and Zhu Ran froze.
It was true while dancing, Nan Zhi had been entirely focused on not making mistakes, completely neglecting her expression.
“This time, you didn’t make any technical errors. But on stage, no one can guarantee they’ll never slip up. Whether the costume fits, whether the shoes have enough grip, the movements of your teammates, once you’re actually performing, there are countless factors that could lead to mistakes. What matters is how you handle them. Little Nan, if you can’t even manage your expressions, do you really think you can handle everything that might happen on stage?”
Xu Silan spoke calmly, her tone not harsh, yet her words left Nan Zhi deep in thought.
When Xu Silan had appeared in the infirmary earlier, she had bluntly told Zhu Ran that her resolve wasn’t strong enough, that she lacked conviction on stage.
Now, she was pointing out Nan Zhi’s flaws.
Though her critiques seemed severe, they didn’t feel like deliberate harshness more like guidance for both of them.
Nan Zhi lifted her gaze, meeting Zhu Ran’s eyes, and saw the same realization reflected there.
Clearly, Zhu Ran sensed it too.
Xu Silan wasn’t trying to give up on Zhu Ran. What she wanted was,
Nan Zhi mustered her courage and asked, “Teacher Xu, could you give me another chance?”
After a pause, she added, “Together with Zhu Ran.”
Xu Silan let out an intrigued “Oh,” her tone lilting upward slightly. She turned to Zhu Ran. “What about you, Zhu Ran? Will you join her?”
“Yes. Please give us another chance, Teacher Xu.”
Xu Silan curled her lips, her crimson mouth stretching into an extremely elegant arc. For the first time, her captivating gaze revealed a look of satisfaction, like a cunning yet beautiful fox.
“Alright.”
The familiar prelude of the music began once more.
Contrary to Xu Silan’s expectations, Zhu Ran didn’t position herself diagonally in front of Nan Zhi but chose to stand side by side instead.
What’s more, the two didn’t even exchange glances.
Yet, with uncanny synchronicity, they both flashed identical, picture-perfect smiles.
The moment the first lyric played, both girls lifted their heads simultaneously. As their bangs fluttered, they matched the words with their lips and spread their arms wide.
Gone was the nervous tension from earlier this time, Nan Zhi’s expression was brimming with confidence and flair, her perfectly timed wink playful and full of energy.
Zhu Ran, however, exuded an entirely different aura.
Compared to her performance during the theme song evaluation, her movements now carried a newfound ease and spontaneity, her expression completely free of its former gloom.
Her gaze was alternately alluring and profound, showcasing her beauty to its fullest.
Now, Zhu Ran’s face was mostly filled with enjoyment and natural ease.
It was as if she had completely shed her restraints and chains like a phoenix reborn from ashes, or a sprite dancing freely.
More than anything, she was simply Zhu Ran, herself.
Xu Silan couldn’t help but silently lament.
If not for maintaining her image, she would’ve loved to record this and show off to Gao Hongzhe and the others.
See? Her picks were the best!
As the music gradually sped up, the rap section kicked in. Nan Zhi and Zhu Ran both hooked a leg and leaped, spinning crisply midair before landing.
Miraculously, both their hair ties snapped at the same time, their long tresses flying wildly, adding to their radiance.
It was the epitome of confident beauty.
With the final drumbeat, they both raised their hands in salute, their eyes blazing with determination.
This was what an idol should look like.
Even in a tiny practice room, they shone brilliantly.
After a brief silence, Xu Silan lifted her hand and clapped lightly a few times.
“Congratulations, you’ve both passed. Get some rest early and adjust your condition, tomorrow’s recording will be long.”
With that, Xu Silan turned and strode out without a backward glance. As she passed the two, she tossed over her shoulder, “Remember, this is your first solo fancam. Don’t embarrass me.”
Nan Zhi let out a shriek of joy and immediately leaped onto Zhu Ran, wrapping her arms around her in a bear hug.
She wanted to cry!
This mission had been way too hard!
In her mind, Nan Zhi yelled, [Next world, don’t you dare pick a girl group for me again!! If you do, I’ll self-destruct!!]
The system wiped away metaphorical tears: [Congratulations, Host, on completing the mission. +10 points. Current cumulative points: 0.]
Suddenly, she wasn’t so excited anymore.
When she snapped back to reality, Nan Zhi realized she was still clinging to Zhu Ran!
“You…” Zhu Ran managed only a single word before choking on the rest.
Horrified, Nan Zhi scrambled down, arms and legs flailing, and began apologizing profusely. “Sorry, sorry! I got carried away, are you hurt?”
Zhu Ran’s face was flushed, likely from the exertion of dancing earlier.
“It’s fine.”
Nan Zhi exhaled in relief and patted her chest.
Seriously! If Zhu Ran got injured before the MV shoot, she might as well just die!
But…
How to describe that sensation?
Nan Zhi gloomily glanced down at herself, then at Zhu Ran’s chest.
So unfair!!
“Ahem!”
Nan Zhi’s gaze was, far from subtle.
Zhu Ran watched the little head swaying back and forth, completely able to guess what Nan Zhi was thinking.
The heat on her face intensified, as if she were trapped inside a massive furnace, surrounded by scorching flames that tormented her relentlessly.
At her waist lingered the warmth and tingling sensation from where Nan Zhi’s thigh had pressed against her.
The faint, delicate scent of coconut milk still clung to her nose so subtle yet somehow…
Zhu Ran couldn’t help but shut her eyes briefly.
When she opened them again, her gaze fluttered uncertainly, unsure where to land.
How could this person in front of her ignite her so effortlessly?
Ignite within her dull, monotonous life a desperate, blazing desire she had never known before.
