- Chapter 10 - Day 10 of the Audition
The “Save Zhu Ran” campaign didn’t last long. Although everyone was just background dancers in the MV, they were still determined to master the choreography.
Tang Keyue kept shouting, “Zhu Ran, save me!” But in reality, both Zhu Ran and Nan Zhi had just arrived and hadn’t participated in last night’s practice, so their progress was completely different from Tang Keyue and Xue Zhi’s.
After a bit of playful banter, Tang Keyue and Nan Zhi returned to Xue Zhi’s side to continue learning the dance.
The girls from Class F even graciously gave them a small corner to practice in.
Nan Zhi finished the entire routine, panting heavily, while the system silently raised its tiny paw to cover its nearly nonexistent eyes.
[I told you to practice more.]
[Shut up.]
She could ignore the system’s snark, but she couldn’t ignore the look on Zhu Ran’s face.
Honestly, it might have been the first time Nan Zhi had seen such a vivid array of expressions on Zhu Ran.
“That bad?” Nan Zhi asked cautiously.
“Not exactly,” Zhu Ran hesitated before adding, “But catching up to Class A will be tough.”
Nan Zhi collapsed on the spot.
“Should we start from the beginning?”
This time, Zhu Ran took the lead, demonstrating the moves while Nan Zhi followed behind.
Having a teacher made all the difference especially when that teacher was Zhu Ran.
Even Xue Zhi and the others paused their practice for five minutes, watching Zhu Ran’s instruction intently.
“Here, you need to fit two moves into this beat. It’s not just about speed, the transitions matter too. So don’t use too much force. The movements don’t have to be exaggerated; just let them flow naturally.”
Zhu Ran kept her arms close, shoulders guiding her movements as she circled them by her sides. Then, with two sharp drumbeats, her upper body vibrated swiftly sharp, clean, and effortlessly cool.
Xue Zhi suddenly realized, “I was so focused on making the moves look powerful that I skipped the small details to match the beat. Turns out, toning it down and adding those details makes it feel so much better.”
“No wonder Xu Silan is called the Devil! She’s insane! Who else could turn a cheerful dance into something this wicked?”
The entire choreography was personally designed by Xu Silan, with every tiny detail bearing her signature style. Very few could keep up with all of it.
But Zhu Ran not only executed the dance flawlessly, she made it her own.
Effortless, free-spirited, and full of ease.
Especially that ease, it was something most contestants struggled to convey.
Everyone in this show wanted to stand out through the camera, and dance was the most direct, most impactful way to do it.
Most contestants opted for powerful, high-energy moves, impressive on their own, instantly eye-catching, making it clear they could dance.
But paired with this upbeat song, it felt slightly off.
Zhu Ran was different.
Her dancing was light and nimble, perfectly blending the music into her movements, soft as a feather when gentle, sharp and striking when the kicks demanded strength.
“For this whistle part, the overall vibe is playful. You can add a little hip sway to the beat, it’ll look cheeky and fun.”
Zhu Ran tilted her head slightly, her side-swept bangs swaying as her long neck and haughty gaze seemed almost hypnotic. Combined with the seemingly casual roll of her hips.
Tang Keyue silently grabbed Xue Zhi’s hand, unable to tear her eyes away from Zhu Ran, only able to wave excitedly to share the moment.
Absolutely unreal.
“Sis, that’s not just a hip sway that’s swaying straight into my heart!”
Nan Zhi had completely frozen in place.
Compared to Zhu Ran, who was dancing effortlessly, she looked like she was trying to tame a brand-new set of limbs.
Noticing her pause, Zhu Ran glanced at Nan Zhi through the mirror. “Why’d you stop?”
Instantly, the classroom erupted in disappointed groans.
Nan Zhi pointed at the sea of fangirls sprawled on the floor and shrugged innocently.
“Can you finish the whole song first? I want to watch you dance it through before I try learning. Otherwise, it’s way too distracting.”
“Distracting how?” Zhu Ran’s ears turned pink, her expression flustered.
Tang Keyue and the others simply plopped down on the floor, holding hands, waving their arms, and chanting Zhu Ran’s name, whipping the atmosphere into a frenzy.
Nan Zhi leaned in, her lips nearly brushing Zhu Ran’s ear, and whispered, “See that, my superstar roommate? Look how much everyone loves watching you dance.”
“Zhu Ran, you were born for the stage. A natural idol.”
The girl carried a faintly sweet coconut perfume, her warm breath tickling Zhu Ran’s ear, more than just an itch.
For the first time, Zhu Ran realized she didn’t dislike sweet scents.
Nor did she mind someone getting this close.
In fact, when Nan Zhi leaned in, she almost closed her eyes, wanting to amplify Nan Zhi’s presence with her remaining senses.
This feeling was utterly strange, something Zhu Ran couldn’t comprehend.
Even harder to understand was the pounding of her heart when they were close.
The increasingly wild thumping nearly drowned out the impact of Nan Zhi’s words, scattering her focus.
For a moment, Zhu Ran felt dazed.
What exactly was Nan Zhi to her?
Meanwhile, the very person who had thrown her into a daze had already rolled into the fangirl pile, grabbing Tang Keyue’s hand and swinging it to the beat.
Zhu Ran glanced at their intertwined fingers, and the exaggerated heartbeat finally settled.
Only to be replaced by another, even stranger emotion.
One that was, distinctly unpleasant.
“Superstar! Quit spacing out we’re your VIP fans in the pit! Show us some energy!”
Nan Zhi released Tang Keyue’s hand, cupping hers like a megaphone and shouting dramatically.
Tang Keyue immediately joined in, “Encore! Encore! Or we’re refunding our tickets!”
The others burst into laughter, collapsing into each other in a chaotic, joyous mess.
Zhu Ran blinked, then sharply caught the two silent words Nan Zhi mouthed between her red lips.
You got this.
Her gaze drifted slightly upward, and a sudden memory flashed through Zhu Ran’s mind.
Back in middle school, on her way home, she’d often run into a little white curly-haired stray.
After feeding it a few times, the dog started waiting for her on that same path every day.
The moment Zhu Ran appeared, its obsidian eyes would light up, tail wagging furiously as it circled her excitedly.
Just like Nan Zhi in this moment her sparkling eyes holding nothing but Zhu Ran’s reflection.
Zhu Ran took a deep breath, then broke into a smile.
With a snap of her fingers, she called out,
“Music”
–
“Which classroom is that? Why’s it so wild in there?”
“Did one of the mentors show up?”
“I think it’s Class F! What’s going on? Wanna check it out?”
Shen Jiaying accepted a towel from a classmate, offering a sweet smile in return.
“Jiaying, let’s go check it out too! Class F is making such a commotion, I wonder what’s happening.”
Class F?
Shen Jiaying wiped the sweat from her brow, nodded with a smile, and responded softly.
She and her classmate were a step behind. Students from other classes had already begun poking their heads out into the hallway, then running toward the classroom at the far end.
Outside the classroom at the end of the corridor, a dense crowd had gathered. Little heads pressed against the glass windows of Class F, occasionally erupting in synchronized screams.
No wonder there was such a ruckus.
By the time Shen Jiaying and her classmate reached the edge of the crowd, they couldn’t see what was happening inside at all.
Her classmate tapped the shoulder of the person in front and asked curiously, “What’s going on here? Who’s inside?”
The person in front turned around, visibly excited, and exclaimed, “The dancers are battling! Oh my god, it’s insane!”
“Dancers? The dance leads from Class A? What are they doing in Class F’s room?”
As soon as her classmate asked the question, Shen Jiaying’s heart sank.
The next second, the reply from the person in front sent it plummeting to the depths.
“Zhu Ran’s in Class F practicing a dance. The others passed by, and somehow they ended up battling it out inside.”
Her classmate’s face lit up with understanding. Though she couldn’t see anything, she inexplicably got swept up in the excitement.
Zhu Ran, who didn’t know her?
Who would’ve thought she was so skilled she could go toe-to-toe with Class A’s dance leads?
So impressive.
“Oh, hey, Jiaying, didn’t you say Zhu Ran’s your friend? Maybe you could ask her to come to our class this afternoon and teach us too?”
Shen Jiaying forced a smile, though her eyes turned slightly cold.
“I’ll ask,” she replied softly.
Her classmate, thrilled by the response, turned back and stood on tiptoe, trying to catch a glimpse of the action.
No one noticed Shen Jiaying’s hand, hanging at her side, gripping her towel so tightly her knuckles turned white.
