The Only Ultimate Alpha in the Universe - Chapter 8
In VIP Room 208, Deken and several of his trusted subordinates were anxiously awaiting the arrival of the mysterious seller.
Duan Feng was helped up by his men, leaning weakly against the back of his chair. Though his legs were covered with a thick velvet blanket, it could hardly conceal the strange, rotting stench emitted by his animalistic mutation.
The auction house had experienced violent incidents in the past where sellers were kidnapped or even murdered. For safety, private meetings between parties were generally not allowed. Even if a seller agreed to meet, no more than five people were permitted, and no weapons were allowed. The seller would be protected by the auction house’s fully armed bodyguards.
This time, it was entirely due to Duan Feng’s excellent reputation for integrity in the underworld that the manager agreed to grant him this favor.
“Mr. Alpha, please come in.” The manager led Xiao Sa into the room, finally arriving.
He pointed to Duan Feng in the armchair and introduced him respectfully, “This is Mr. Duan Feng. And the gentleman beside me, Mr. Alpha, is the seller who consigned the B-grade inhibitors tonight.”
Xiao Sa narrowed his eyes, his gaze locking with Duan Feng’s for a moment.
Duan Feng? That sounded like the name of the star pirate group.
So the sucker who had just coolly spent 90,000 star coins on him was a member of this very pirate group. Tsk tsk, it really was a narrow path for rivals.
While Xiao Sa was sizing them up, Duan Feng was also observing him. Unfortunately, this man was wrapped up like a black mummy, with only a pair of exceptionally sharp eyes visible. The man’s gaze appeared neither arrogant nor wary; it was more like a casual indifference born of absolute confidence in his own strength.
Duan Feng took a difficult breath and proactively tipped his hat to him. “Mr. Alpha, it is an honor to meet you tonight. My apologies for being unable to stand; please forgive my rudeness.”
“May I ask, were these two B-grade inhibitors made by you?”
Xiao Sa didn’t stand on ceremony. He took off his hood and mask and sat on the sofa opposite him. “Yes. Tell me plainly, what do you want from me?”
Since recovering from the hospital, aside from making inhibitors, he had spent all his time using his optical brain to frantically study the language, script, and social norms of this country. His study time was simply too short to master everything completely.
Upon seeing Xiao Sa’s face, the squad leader standing behind Duan Feng widened his eyes. He pointed at Xiao Sa and stuttered, “You, you’re the man we picked up from that crashed ship the other day!”
As soon as these words were spoken, everyone present stared at him in shock.
The squad leader looked like he was about to cry. The guy he had locked in an iron cage was actually a mental healer capable of producing B-grade inhibitors?
If he had known this day would come, knowing their entire pirate group was counting on this person to save their leader’s life—and even the lives of the whole crew—he wouldn’t have dared lock him in a cage or confiscate his necklace even if he were beaten to death.
They were finished; they had offended this man to the point of no return.
Duan Feng was also stunned. Then, a thick sense of irony and a bitter smile welled up in his eyes. “I truly didn’t expect such a ridiculous twist of fate. I suppose this is what they call karmic retribution.”
His days were numbered, so dying was one thing, but what about the brothers who had followed him for decades? They lived year-round in a hail of bullets on the battlefield, and their mental pollution was severe. Since defecting from the Imperial military, they no longer had a source for high-grade inhibitors.
Xiao Sa looked at the person opposite him with a cold expression. “Let’s settle the score first. Where is my gemstone necklace?”
He rested his hands on the armrests with his fingers interlaced. The heavy fabric of his cloak draped over the side of the black leather sofa, making him look more like an underworld godfather than Duan Feng.
When he mentioned the gemstone necklace, the character-shaped eyes of Hainuo on Xiao Sa’s wrist flickered almost imperceptibly.
The deputy, Deken, showed a look of deep regret. He took a step forward and bowed slightly toward him. “Mr. Alpha, I am terribly sorry. This matter is entirely my fault. I was blinded by greed and ordered men to take it. How much is your necklace worth? No matter the amount, we will compensate you. Double, no, triple is fine! As long as you are willing to save our boss, name your price!”
Xiao Sa shook his head. “It has no price.”
The Star Power Gem was a symbol of his family’s status. Since encountering the interstellar storm while crossing the wormhole, the fate of his people was unknown. If they had truly met with disaster, he would be the last of his kind in the universe, and a symbol of status would lose its meaning. What use was a necklace then?
Thinking of his people, Xiao Sa fell into silence again.
Duan Feng, however, misunderstood Xiao Sa’s silence as resentment. If a mental healer capable of producing B-grade inhibitors wanted revenge, the pirate group’s situation would only become more difficult.
He sighed deeply and forced himself to sit up. After thinking quietly for a moment, he seemed to make a major decision and actually stood up from the sofa. The velvet blanket slid off instantly, revealing a pair of terrifying, monstrous legs covered in barbs and scales.
Xiao Sa watched these strange legs in surprise. To his unexpected, Duan Feng waved away the subordinates who tried to support him. He stumbled two steps toward Xiao Sa, pulled a very exquisite dagger from a hidden clasp on his belt, and pointed it at his own heart!
“Boss!” Deken and the others cried out in horror, rushing forward to stop him. Even the surrounding bodyguards were frozen in shock.
“Sir, to be honest, the gold and jewelry we collected have already been sold to the Central Star to exchange for warships and weapons. Your gemstone necklace is likely among them.”
“I, Duan Feng, cannot repay you in kind, so I will follow the rules of the road and repay you with this life! As long as you are willing to produce more inhibitors for us to save my old brothers, if you want my life in return, I have nothing to say.”
Xiao Sa was both shocked and speechless. No, what was wrong with the people in this star system? Why were they always shouting about killing or being killed? What kind of fetish was it to pull out a knife and try to commit suicide over a disagreement?
As a righteous Alpha, he often felt out of place among these freaks because he was too normal.
“What use is your life to me?” Paying him back would be better!
Xiao Sa shook his head. “You can buy my inhibitors, but I want you to do a few things for me. The first thing is to help me investigate the whereabouts of that gemstone necklace.”
He rubbed his chin, his gaze sweeping over the sturdy men as if a capitalist was measuring the value of cheap labor. He was a stranger in a strange land, without money or influence. Finding his necklace and his people would be impossible on his own.
When one is away from home, one must rely on friends. If there are no friends, laborers will do.
“That is certainly no problem.”
He actually agreed?
Duan Feng froze, staring intently into Xiao Sa’s eyes. The others looked at each other in disbelief. Was this guy really this easy to talk to?
Central Star, Aurora Imperial Palace.
Admiral Landis of the Third Legion, having returned in triumph from pursuing the traitors, led his adjutant Carlo and a group of officers into the palace. Under the guidance of the palace chamberlain, they were summoned to an audience with His Majesty the Emperor.
“Admiral Landis Wenser has arrived!”
The heavy stone doors, five meters high and carved with angel reliefs, swung open. Landis’s black military boots stepped steadily across the golden-veined marble floors of the corridor. The honor guards on both sides saluted in unison without breaking their gaze.
In the center of the circular, luxurious hall, an icy dark-gold throne stood atop stone steps covered in dark red handmade cashmere carpets.
The sole master of the Aurora Empire sat on the throne with a smile, flanked by two richly dressed young men, the Second and Third Princes. The Emperor looked like a kind old man, his white beard resembling a tuft of cotton stuck to his chin. He held a scepter as tall as a man, encrusted with a massive, brilliant amethyst.
“Your Majesty.” Landis gave the group a brief glance and knelt on one knee. Before his knee could touch the ground, the Emperor had already stood up and supported his arm.
“Haha, Landis, you’re back. I’ve waited a long time. You did well this time. You mustn’t skip the victory banquet later.”
Landis lowered his head slightly, his voice indifferent. “I was only performing my duty. I do not deserve your praise, Your Majesty.”
The Third Prince chuckled. “Admiral Wenser is as humble and polite as ever.”
The Emperor asked about the pursuit of the star pirates and chatted for a bit, leading him toward the banquet hall. Suddenly, he winked at Landis and smiled. “My General, your mental fluctuations seem more stable since your return. Did you have some romantic encounter on the way?”
Landis’s face stiffened, and he pressed his lips together. After a long silence, he said stiffly, “No such thing. Please do not joke, Your Majesty.”
“Haha, just a joke. You’re still as easily teased as your father.” The Emperor didn’t mind and laughed heartily. “By the way, you’re not getting any younger. How is the match-matching that Hainuo arranged for you?”
Landis was about to speak, but the Emperor waved his hand slightly, speaking in a tone that brooked no refusal. “You should be very clear about your own physical condition. Several ministers from the military department have already come to see me about you. As the Commander of the Third Legion, you carry heavy responsibilities.”
“No matter who Hainuo matches you with this time, you had better not refuse. That is an order.”
Landis’s gaze narrowed slightly. An image inadvertently surfaced in his mind. After a moment, he said softly, “Yes, Your Majesty.”
