- Chapter 8 - Encountering and Still Having to Break Off the Engagement
Three scripts, three roles, and she aced every audition. Wen Yan couldn’t help but feel a little smug. Back at the hotel, she pinched and rubbed her younger brother’s cheeks affectionately.
“Your sister passed the auditions! How about I treat you to some crayfish?”
Wen Xiu nodded gently and replied softly, “Okay.”
“Good boy. Wait for me to wake up, then I’ll take you to eat. After that, we can stroll around Shudian.”
These past few days had been a whirlwind for Wen Yan reading scripts, selecting roles, understanding characters, memorizing lines, and refining her performances. Each task was mentally and physically draining.
With the auditions for all three projects scheduled so closely together, she had to sacrifice sleep, even working on character analyses during flights, just to ensure she nailed every audition.
Now that she had achieved the results she wanted, all Wen Yan desired was a good, long sleep.
Meanwhile, on the other side of Shudian, Gu Lin was completely focused on the screen. The weather was scorching hot. She wore a dark brown fisherman’s hat for shade, her long hair tied up, yet sweat still streamed down her face uncontrollably.
Her assistant, Qin Xia, stood nearby holding wet wipes but didn’t dare interrupt.
They were filming the most critical scene of the movie Rivalry the climax and soul of the film. The male lead discovers that the female lead was responsible for the death of the second female lead and that she had tipped off his archrival. The faint love he once felt for her completely vanished, transforming into overwhelming rage and hatred.
He arrives at the female lead’s room with a bowl of abortion medicine.
Ordering his servants to restrain her, he forces the abortion medicine down her throat.
This scene wasn’t particularly demanding for the male lead, he only needed to portray coldness, anger, and ruthlessness, using physical actions to convey the finality of their relationship.
The female lead, however, carried the weight of the scene. She had to perfectly embody everything from indifference when confronted, to panic, struggle, and disbelief when restrained, and finally, the agony and despair of being forced to drink the abortion medicine.
This was the child they had struggled to conceive perhaps the only child her infertile body could ever bear.
And it was killed inside her by its own father.
Gu Lin herself was a fresh graduate, a new director, and the actors she worked with were also newcomers. The female lead, An Ran, was a college senior undeniably beautiful. She had performed well in previous scenes, with only occasional deviations that were easily corrected after a reminder.
But this scene demanded extremely high acting skills. An Ran had filmed it multiple times, crying until her throat was hoarse, yet she still hadn’t heard the director call “cut.”
The assistant was growing increasingly anxious, feeling that her actress was being treated unfairly.
Mustering her courage, she approached and whispered, “Director Gu, could An Ran have some water and touch up her makeup?”
Gu Lin didn’t even glance at her. “Do you see me drinking water or touching up my makeup?”
“Are the extras drinking water or touching up their makeup?”
“Is your artist the only one who needs water and makeup?”
Her tone was flat, devoid of emotion, but her words were laced with biting sarcasm.
The assistant’s face flushed with embarrassment. In a slightly raised voice, she argued, “But An Ran is an omega her constitution is naturally weaker.”
Here we go again the “weakness is blameless” argument.
Gu Lin closed her eyes, hiding her deep-seated disgust and irritation, and let out a light chuckle.
“Perhaps I should have cast an alpha to play the female lead.”
“Qin Xia, remind me of that in the future.”
Qin Xia knew the Fifth Young Miss wasn’t speaking in anger. When she said something like this, she would definitely prioritize efficiency and act accordingly. Qin Xia immediately responded.
“Understood, Director Lin.”
Gu Lin reached out her hand, and Qin Xia promptly handed over the megaphone.
“Cut.”
“An Ran, can you handle this scene properly?”
“I won’t lower my standards, and I won’t use a stand-in.”
“Search your conscience, then answer me.”
“Can you meet my requirements for this scene?”
An Ran, who had already NG’d six times, sat on the ground and shook her head dejectedly.
She found herself completely unable to immerse in this scene perfectly. She couldn’t grasp that heart-wrenching despair, and her painful cries had turned into dry, forced wails.
“Good, I appreciate your honesty.”
“But please understand that your poor acting skills have cost me at least five million in losses.”
“My film is halfway through shooting, and because of your incompetence, I need to find another actress and reshoot everything.”
“Thank you for teaching me this lesson.”
“You may leave, take your assistant with you.”
The assistant was stunned, never expecting things to unfold this way. She glanced at Gu Lin, clearly wanting to say something, but ultimately rushed to her artist’s side.
Gu Lin put down the microphone and quietly instructed Qin Xia, “Contact Sister Jin Yin for me. Tell her I urgently need a skilled actress, preferably an alpha.”
“Understood, Director Lin.”
“Everyone takes a break.”
“Thank Miss An Ran, you all get half a day off because of this.”
Being publicly humiliated like this was unbearable for any omega. An Ran took off her costume and ran off sobbing.
“What’s there to cry about?” Gu Lin tilted her head, her red lips moving beneath her fisherman’s hat. “Was anything I said untrue?”
Qin Xia: The boss is too blunt, no wonder she’s always single.
Gu Lin decided not to dwell on what she couldn’t understand. She took off her hat, wiping the sweat from her forehead, her expression weary.
This was her first work, into which she had poured tremendous effort. Working overtime and staying up late had become routine.
“Notify the costume, makeup, and photography departments – I’m treating them to crayfish tonight.”
“After working so hard for so long, we’re back to square one.”
“They deserve proper compensation.”
Qin Xia: “Understood, Director Lin.”
“Also, don’t tell my mother about recasting and reshooting the film.” Gu Lin pinched the bridge of her nose and added.
She had worked tirelessly to enter the film industry under the name Lin Ye precisely because she didn’t want to rely on her parents’ reputation and wanted to prove her own capabilities.
If her mother found out about the filming troubles, she would definitely rush to the set to help.
Qin Xia: “Understood, Director Lin.”
“Has Sister Jin Yin replied?”
“She sent a file directly with all the candidates’ information. You can open it on your laptop later and carefully review them.”
“Tell her I have decision fatigue. Have her select someone directly and send them to me.”
Qin Xia: “Understood, Director Lin.”
When Wen Yan woke up, stars already dotted the night sky outside. Checking the time, she saw it was past seven.
She wondered if A Xiu was starving by now.
Feeling guilty, Wen Yan immediately called her younger brother.
“Big sister just woke up. Are you hungry?”
“Not too bad.”
“Wait for me another half hour, then we’ll go out.”
“Okay, sis.”
After a quick half-hour shower, Wen Yan didn’t bother with makeup. She threw on an oversized shirt, paired it with a short skirt and sneakers, then headed out.
Her younger brother, dressed in a shirt and trousers, was leaning quietly by the door, waiting for her.
There were plenty of dining options around the film studio. Wen Yan chose the highly recommended 1029 Lobster House, a spot frequented by many celebrities and directors. The app was filled with posts from tourists sharing their encounters with various stars here.
The restaurant was spacious, spanning two floors.
Inside, the lively chatter of patrons filled the air, mingling with the rich aroma of food and the faint, underlying scent of pheromones.
Wen Yan instinctively frowned and immediately asked if there was a private room available.
Both she and her brother were omegas, no amount of caution was excessive.
The host informed her that the private rooms were already occupied. Noticing their appearances both strikingly beautiful omegas the host understood their concerns and suggested they dine on the second floor, which was less crowded.
Wen Yan found a seat by the window, handed the menu to her brother, and told him to order whatever he liked while she went to the restroom.
On her way, she passed a woman who exuded a cool, elegant aura.
She was strikingly beautiful, with sharp eyebrows and bright eyes, carrying a sharp, resilient quality uncommon among omegas.
She must be an alpha, Wen Yan’s intuition told her.
She hadn’t intended to observe so closely beautiful women were nothing new to her, even in her past life. But the woman had noticed her first. Wen Yan felt the weight of a gaze, looked up, and their eyes met.
The woman lowered her gaze, a slight frown crossing her features.
They passed each other without a trace, just as they had in their first encounter.
Gu Lin turned and watched Wen Yan’s retreating figure.
A strange emotion churned within her.
It seemed she had found her leading lady.
