- Chapter 68 - Fiancée and Visiting the Set
Since publicly announcing her retirement from acting, Ye Lan had embraced a peaceful and content early retirement.
Each morning, she would go for a leisurely jog in the hills behind her home, accompanied by her attendant. After an hour, she would return for a nutritious and wholesome breakfast. Her days were spent either tending to her flowers, trimming the grass, or admiring her latest jewelry acquisitions. If she felt sociable, she would arrange lunch with her former girlfriends or other ladies from prominent families; if not, she would savor a meal prepared by her five-star chef alone.
In the afternoons, she usually took a nap after all, she wasn’t as young as she used to be, and her body needed more rest. By around three o’clock, she would gradually wake up, greeting the dusk with a cup of hot tea and a good book.
Sometimes, she would ride a few laps at the equestrian club, take her clever Border Collie for a walk, or enjoy a round of golf as her usual pastimes.
But as time went on, even this began to feel monotonous. Ye Lan was, by nature, someone who couldn’t help but worry. Though she could have spent her golden years in leisure playing with her dog or traveling she couldn’t stop fretting over her five children. Day after day, she scoured the internet for videos and articles encouraging childbirth and shared them in the family group chat.
Three of her children were already married, with the eldest, Gu Yi, in her thirties, yet none had brought a grandchild into the world.
Ye Lan’s longing to become a grandmother remained unfulfilled, leaving her deeply disheartened. This feeling only intensified recently, as celebrities and actors from her era had begun flaunting their roles as grandparents in their social media posts, making Ye Lan even more melancholy.
Her constant sighs during meals and before bed had grown so noticeable that Gu Lang, in alarm, packed his bags and left for an overseas business trip, not daring to sleep at home these days.
Loving Family Group Chat
Mom of Five Little Ones: [Shared link, Shocking! Elderly person willingly scammed out of 200,000 yuan, all because they had no children and just wanted someone to talk to.]
One Gu Gu: […]
Gu Er, Not a Fool: […]
Little Three from the Actress’s Family: […]
Mortal Fairy Gu Xiao Si: [Wow, 200,000 just for chatting? I’d be up for that too.]
Mom of Five Little Ones: [Look how pitiful those who refused to have children end up in their old age, no one to care for them, no one to support them. Sigh.]
The four sisters, even through their screens, could sense their mother’s underlying message. Without a word, they switched over to the “Four Beauties” group chat.
One Gu Gu: [Xian Xian, do you and Jin Yin have any plans?]
Little Three from the Actress’s Family: [Sister Yi, Jin Jin and I are still young, no rush yet.]
[But Dr. Shen and you aren’t getting any younger are you really not planning to have a baby?]
Mortal Fairy Gu Xiao Si: [Even though I’m single, I still have to ask, why is everyone ignoring Sister Shuang?]
Gu Er, Not a Fool: [No one will think you’re mute if you keep quiet.]
Gu Si Si wrinkled her nose: The fairy feels wronged, but the fairy won’t say it.
One Gu Gu: [That’s true. Shuang Shuang and Bi Yu are both capable of having children. With today’s technology, even same-sex couples can have children entirely their own. Have you two considered it?]
Gu Er, Not a Fool: [We barely have enough time for just the two of us. Adding a little troublemaker into the mix would give me a nervous breakdown.]
Mortal Fairy Gu Xiao Si: [Sister Shuang, that’s prejudice! I was so well-behaved as a child, I never gave Mom any trouble at all.]
Movie Queen’s Third Daughter: [Do you need big sis to tell you the truth? You were clearly raised free-range by Mom.]
Gu Sisi: ????
Eldest sister Gu Yi continued adding salt to the wound.
One Gu Gu: [And the most well-behaved one is Little Five. You’re the headache.]
Gu Sisi: There’s no love left. I can’t feel any kindness from this world. I want to leave the group chat.
Sorry, I shouldn’t have disturbed you all. I’m just a pitiful single dog, not worthy of joining your conversation.
Gu Sisi wiped her tears and exited the group chat, while Ye Lan continued with full fighting spirit.
The Loving Family group chat.
Mom of Five Babies: [Mom knows you all have career ambitions and worry that having children will affect your work.]
[So let me make this clear today – I’ll help take care of your babies, guaranteed to raise them plump, fair, and adorable. How about that?]
No!
The three sisters refuted in their hearts, but didn’t dare directly reject their mother’s well-intentioned efforts. Fortunately, Xian Xian was clever – no, resourceful – and immediately redirected the trouble.
Dragging Gu Little Five out as a shield.
Movie Queen’s Third Daughter: [Mom, don’t rush. In a couple years when Little Five gets married, she’ll definitely give you a beautiful granddaughter~]
Gu Lin, who was currently filming: Ah-choo!
This was quite a loud sneeze. Qin Xia handed her a tissue, smiling as she asked: “Is someone thinking of you?”
As she said this, she deliberately glanced toward Wen Yan’s direction, earning a faint look from Gu Lin.
“Probably just catching a slight cold.”
“That’s true, spring has such big temperature differences between day and night. Director Lin should take care to stay warm.”
Gu Lin nodded, her eyes continuing to closely watch Wen Yan and Tian Yuan’s acting expressions, unaware that she had already been sold out by her three wonderful older sisters.
Mom of Five Babies: [Little Five and Yan Yan haven’t reached that stage yet, don’t change the subject.]
After all, Ye Lan had been through this herself – how could she be fooled by her daughters’ little tricks.
Second Gu Who’s Not Actually Second: [Exactly because they haven’t reached that stage that they need attention.]
[Think about it – Little Five has no experience and is very straightforward. If the daughter-in-law we’ve practically got in hand runs away, where would you find someone as good as Wen Yan who pleases you so much?]
Ye Lan thought about it and felt Second Daughter had a point.
[But I can’t just directly push them to get married either.]
When it comes to relationships, the older generation shouldn’t interfere like that. Young people always prefer free, democratic romance.
Just getting her to go on a blind date made her resist like crazy.
Ye Lan recalled again when Gu Lin had just returned from America – she had introduced her to an old friend’s daughter. The young girl was quite likable, with a sweet smile, the kind who looked like she’d be mommy’s little darling. Very much the typical omega who obeys alphas, a good girl, not like those messy green tea white lotus types or those flashy sluts outside.
But during their meeting, aside from self-introductions, Gu Lin hadn’t actively spoken a single word to the girl. The girl had blushed and tried every way to make conversation, struggling to keep the atmosphere from turning cold. With that question-and-answer format, it was less like a blind date and more like a press conference. Gu Lin maintained an aloof expression, really looking like a popular celebrity dealing with paparazzi.
The omega could clearly sense the alpha’s indifference and disregard toward her. She left feeling aggrieved and even went home to cry to her mother, complaining that Gu Lin looked down on her and wouldn’t even spare her a few words. Her old friend was immediately displeased whose daughter wasn’t a precious darling to be cherished? If not for their years of sisterly friendship, she would have stormed over to give Gu Lin a piece of her mind. Ye Lan knew Gu Lin had been impolite, so she had no choice but to personally apologize to her friend. And so, the matter was laid to rest.
At the time, Ye Lan had genuinely feared her daughter was destined to be alone. Little did she expect that now she would have such a wonderful girlfriend.
Little Third from the Movie Queen’s Family: [But you could drop by and offer some guidance. See how things are between them now. With your experience, you’d surely be able to tell when Wen Yan would be willing to marry into our Gu family.]
Hmm, maybe that wasn’t such a bad idea?
A Gu Gu: [They’ll have children when the time is right. Shen Jue and I have already included it in our plans.]
[But if your daughter-in-law isn’t careful, she might accidentally lose Little Five~]
Ye Lan: !!!!!
Exactly! That little rascal, Little Five, what does she know about dating?!
“So, you came directly to the set to visit?”
Gu Lin rubbed her temples, looking helplessly at her mother, who was bundled up tightly before her, the once-glamorous, award-sweeping movie queen.
A face mask, sunglasses, and a headscarf whose brilliant idea was this? True, no one could recognize her, but she looked so suspiciously sneaky!
If the police didn’t notice her, the sharp-eyed paparazzi surely would.
After all, she either looked like a creepy criminal or a mentally unstable international superstar!
People were already casting glances in their direction!
Ye Lan, however, thought this method was perfect. Previously, Little Five had forbidden her from visiting the set precisely to avoid being associated with a movie queen. Dressed like this, who could possibly recognize her as the famous Ye Lan?
“Auntie Lan?”
???
Who?!
Who recognized her?!
Startled, Ye Lan turned around and was pleasantly surprised to find that the person greeting her was Wen Yan.
Wen Yan was still dressed in shabby costume, her makeup making her appear thin and frail. Yet, her eyes remained bright and spirited. The contrast subtly revealed a resilient and tenacious aura truly, the more one looked, the more it tugged at the heartstrings.
Ye Lan removed her sunglasses, carefully studying the young woman before her. She took Wen Yan’s hand, her tone full of concern and reproach.
“Why are you so thin?”
There was no flesh on her hands at all just bones, sharp to the touch.
The motherly instincts kicked in, unable to bear it. She launched into a nagging lecture as if struck by a menopausal episode.
“I know it’s for filming, but being this thin is bad for your health. Irregular eating habits will weaken your constitution. When you’re young, you push yourself hard for money, but as you get older, your body will suffer in all sorts of ways.”
“In autumn and winter, your hands and feet will turn icy cold. In summer, you’ll break into weak sweats. It’ll take a long time to recover.”
“Do you eat ice?”
Wen Yan glanced at Gu Lin for help. Gu Lin, with her back turned to Ye Lan, shook her head slightly.
“I don’t.”
Ye Lan nodded in satisfaction. “That’s good. Young women should eat less ice and spicy food. Keep your diet light and regular.”
“Oh, and you should also drink less tea and coffee. Drink more milk and soy milk, it’s good for your health.”
“And also…”
Once a menopausal woman starts nagging, she really can’t stop, chattering on and on from diet to wellness, from early sleep and early rising to yoga and exercise. Wen Yan listened patiently from start to finish, occasionally chiming in.
But inside, she was thinking: Save me, I just came over to say hello.
Still, this was just a momentary complaint. Wen Yan knew that Ye Lan genuinely cared about her, which was why she didn’t feel the slightest bit impatient.
Gu Lin glanced at his watch. His mother had already delivered a ten-minute-long speech and showed no signs of stopping. Though he felt like applauding her performance internally, for the sake of his girlfriend’s ears, Gu Lin had to interrupt his mother.
“Mom, have you eaten yet?”
It was 11:15 in the morning. His mother’s unexpected visit had disrupted the original filming schedule, forcing a pause in shooting. Moreover, Gu Lin didn’t want them to continue under such intense scrutiny.
“Not yet.”
“Oh, right, I ordered a bunch of sandwiches and juice. They should be delivered soon.”
“When they arrive, distribute them to the crew and say.”
Ye Lan patted Wen Yan’s hand, “Say they’re a treat from Yan Yan.”
Wen Yan was taken aback and instinctively wanted to refuse, but before she could speak, Ye Lan cut her off.
“It’s fine. Xiao Wu is the director, he doesn’t need to do this kind of thing.”
“If the crew receives a favor from you, they might not be overly grateful, but at the very least, they’ll quietly support you.”
“Omega actors don’t have it easy in this industry, there’s a lot of inexplicable malice.”
“Auntie has been through it too.”
“Don’t worry, just accept it.”
“After all, there isn’t much Auntie can do for you right now.”
