- The Omega's Vow: Never Marry a Mama's Boy Alpha
- Chapter 61 - The Family of the Fiancée
New Year’s Eve.
The Gu family’s Spring Festival tradition was to gather together on Lunar New Year’s Eve, take the private jet abroad for vacation on the first day of the new year, return on the third day, after which the children would have free time.
However, in recent years, as the children had grown older especially the second, third, and fifth daughters, their work often involved international dealings, making it occasionally impossible for them to return home for the holidays. This year, for instance, the third daughter’s wife, Jinyin, and the fifth daughter’s fiancée, Wen Yan, were absent. Gu Xian and Gu Lin didn’t seem to mind much, but Ye Lan felt a distinct emptiness.
The matriarch had prepared gifts and red envelopes for her future daughters-in-law a week in advance, never imagining she wouldn’t have the chance to give them out.
The thought alone made her upset, and her frustration soon turned toward her youngest daughter, whom she found increasingly irritating.
Before dinner, Gu Lin was curled up on the sofa with her Mac, reviewing candidate information and video profiles. Working on New Year’s Eve, without even bothering to check in on her girlfriend.
So inconsiderate, that brat.
Ye Lan sat down beside her, cleared her throat, and without regard for whether Gu Lin was busy, posed her question directly.
“Has Yan Yan called you?”
Hearing her mother speak, Gu Lin immediately closed her laptop obediently, set her work aside, and replied.
“No, she hasn’t. Why do you ask?”
Ye Lan fixed her with a disapproving stare. “If she hasn’t called you, why can’t you call her?”
“You’re an alpha, why can’t you be more proactive?”
“Making a delicate omega take the lead in everything that’s not right.”
“Especially today, on Spring Festival. Yan Yan’s parents are gone, and she only has her younger brother by her side.”
“Couldn’t you call to check on her?”
Gu Lin tried several times to interject and stop her mother’s rambling, but Ye Lan’s formidable presence kept her subdued. The pitiful fifth daughter of the Gu family could only wait for her mother to finish scolding her before offering a meek defense.
“Mom, there’s a time difference.”
“It’s only 3 a.m. over there right now.”
Ye Lan: “…”
The four sisters and two sons-in-law sitting nearby struggled to hold back their laughter, sparing their dear mother some dignity.
Ye Lan’s usually elegant and composed face briefly showed a flicker of embarrassment before she quickly regained her poise and defended herself with conviction.
“I just like Yan Yan so much.”
“She always reminds me of myself when I was younger.”
Ah, once the words “back in the day” left Ye Lan’s lips, they were inevitably followed by a lengthy “Memoirs of a Movie Queen.” The five Gu sisters had grown up hearing how their mother, as an “ordinary” omega, struggled through the treacherous entertainment industry, overcoming hardships and challenges to eventually become a peerless screen legend. At first, they were fascinated, sitting obediently on the sofa as if listening to a story. But after hearing it so many times, they could all recite it by heart and even predict her next line.
Gu Sisi muttered under her breath as she listened, “How can the campus belle of the China Film Academy be considered ‘ordinary’?”
Before Ye Lan debuted, when she was studying at Huaxia Film Academy, her exceptional beauty caught the attention of many directors, who eagerly extended olive branches to her.
Eldest sister Gu Yi respected their mother the most. She gently pinched her fourth sister’s arm and whispered,
“Just listen to what Mom has to say.”
Gu Chen wore a smile, the perfectly standard socialite smile. If one didn’t pay attention to her lips, it would be impossible to tell she was speaking.
“After hearing it so many times, aren’t you tired of it, Sister Yi?”
Gu Yi: “I treat it like listening to the Prajnaparamita Heart Sutra.”
Gu Chen & Gu Sisi: “……”
Gu Shuang glanced at her eldest sister and slowly gave her a thumbs-up.
After a long session of reminiscing, it was finally time for dinner. The Gu family placed great importance on rituals, it was something ingrained in their bones. At 5:30, they offered incense to their ancestors, and by 6:00, they sat down for the meal.
At 5:50, Wen Yan’s call came through. It should have been just before 5 a.m. in New York.
“Happy New Year, my darling~”
Wen Yan’s flawless British accent, paired with her sleepy, just-woken-up voice, was enough to make Gu Lin’s heart melt.
“The New Year hasn’t arrived yet.”
Gu Lin gestured toward the phone to her family. Ye Lan, realizing it was Wen Yan calling, instantly lit up and waved encouragingly at her youngest, urging her to go chat properly with Yan Yan.
“That’s not important. Have you eaten yet?”
“About to. Why are you up so early?”
Was it intentional?
Of course, it was intentional. Wen Yan had even set multiple alarms just to make sure she could call her neglected fiancée at this exact moment for a comforting chat.
Besides, since it was the Spring Festival, even if she couldn’t visit in person, a greeting call was absolutely necessary.
“Hmm? I just woke up naturally.”
The tsundere older sister loved putting on a brave front and never admitting the truth. Gu Lin naturally didn’t expose her, it was part of their unspoken dynamic.
“When are you coming back?”
“I miss you.”
Gu Lin thought that if Wen Yan’s work wasn’t finished yet, she might as well take advantage of the holiday to go to New York and see her.
“My flight is the day after tomorrow. Will my adorable, beautiful girlfriend be waiting for me at the airport?”
The “adorable, beautiful girlfriend” blushed slightly, her ears turning red. She instinctively glanced toward her family and met Ye Lan’s knowing gaze. Suddenly feeling like a teenager caught flirting with her girlfriend by her parents, a blush spread across her face.
Ye Lan’s smile never faded. Her gaze was so direct and obvious that the others followed her line of sight, quietly admiring the youngest sister lost in the throes of love.
Gu Sisi: “What is this? A shy first love girl? So Mary Sue wasn’t lying after all.”
Gu Shuang set down her chopsticks, took a sip of wine, and commented flatly, “Are you talking about your novel, All the Alphas in School Love Me?”
Gu Chen: Pfft.
Gu Yi sighed silently and handed a tissue to her third sister, who was nearly choking.
Was this joke ever going to die?
Gu Sisi puffed out her cheeks in frustration, raised her wine glass to Gu Lang, and then downed it with her dad. Gu Lang, accustomed to such scenes, sat at the head of the table, eating and drinking heartily, enjoying the rare warmth of family time.
His wife was beautiful and gentle, and his daughters were all successful in their careers.
The domineering CEO felt immensely proud and downed several glasses in a row. If it weren’t for the fact that Shen Jue and Bi Yu couldn’t drink, Gu Lang would have insisted on keeping them company.
Under normal circumstances, Ye Lan would have stopped him from drinking long ago not out of concern for his health. Alphas were naturally robust, and a few glasses of alcohol were nothing to them. But the stench after drinking, coupled with his refusal to shower and his snoring, was truly unbearable. Unfortunately, at this moment, Ye Lan’s attention was entirely on her youngest daughter, her gaze fixed unwaveringly on Gu Lin’s back.
Was it Wen Yan on the phone?
Then Wen Yan must have greeted her, her future mother-in-law, right?
How wonderful it would be to drop the word “future” from that title.
Sure enough, about three minutes later, Gu Lin ended the call. Within seconds, Ye Lan’s phone rang.
A WeChat video call from Wen Yan.
A voice call with her girlfriend, but a video call with her mother-in-law, ah, the preferential treatment was clear as day.
Ye Lan was utterly delighted by this silent flattery and closeness. She immediately answered the call, angling the camera to capture her best side.
On the screen, Wen Yan appeared elegant and refined, her smile pure and sweet, looking every bit the likable, well-mannered girl.
“Yan Yan~”
“Auntie Lan, Happy New Year’s Eve~ I’m sorry I couldn’t visit you in person.”
“Oh, it’s no trouble at all. When I was your age, I was always busy outside too.”
Ye Lan understood completely and didn’t see any issue with it.
“We omegas should have our own careers. You’re doing great, and Auntie supports you.”
Wen Yan covered her mouth and laughed. Auntie Lan was just as witty and humorous as the first time they met, making it impossible to resist her charm.
The two chatted animatedly across the miles, and everyone at the table watched as Ye Lan laughed heartily, coaxed by Wen Yan’s words, even the crow’s feet at the corners of her eyes becoming more pronounced. It truly felt like a harmonious mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationship.
Meanwhile, Gu Lang, who had been neglected by his wife for quite some time, restlessly leaned in. But as soon as half his face appeared on the screen, Ye Lan gently pushed him away with a smile.
She even shot him a sidelong glare.
We women are talking, what’s a smelly man like you doing butting in?
Wen Yan, however, took the initiative to mention the domineering CEO with the lowest status in the family.
“Was that Mr. Gu Lang just now?”
Just as Ye Lan was about to say something, Gu Lang’s distinct, deep baritone voice came through.
“You should call me Dad.”
The moment those words were spoken, silence fell instantly. Even Wen Yan was at a loss for words, so embarrassed she even considered hanging up.
Wen Yan: So awkward, what should I do? Asking for a friend, it’s urgent.
Ye Lan wished she could slap that dog-like face of his. Your precious daughter hasn’t even proposed yet, how dare you ask her to call you Dad!
Please, just shut up.
“Hehe, Yan Yan, don’t mind him. Your Uncle Gu had too much to drink and isn’t thinking straight.”
“I see.”
Gu Lang, seemingly addicted to digging his own grave, pressed on.
“Yan Yan, when are you coming back? Uncle will treat you to a meal and give you a big red envelope.”
Wen Yan: Help, someone save me.
She was dying of embarrassment.
At this point, she couldn’t let the situation escalate further. Ye Lan cut the Gordian knot and decisively ended the call.
“Yan Yan, you should get some rest now. Auntie is hanging up~”
Putting down her phone, she reached out and twisted Gu Lang’s ear, giving it a practiced twist.
“Can’t you just behave during the New Year? Stop meddling in the kids’ business!”
“He and your daughter are still in the dating phase, what gives him the right to call you ‘Dad’? Is it because you’re thick-skinned? Or because you’re all flesh and no shame?”
This was a common little skit between the couple. The kids all kept their heads down, eating as if nothing had happened.
But Gu Lin’s expression was off. She hadn’t even picked up her chopsticks, instead fiddling with her phone with her head lowered.
Beside her, Gu Sisi asked, “Xiao Wu, why aren’t you eating?”
Gu Lin looked up, covering her face as she let out a deep sigh, her tone filled with despair.
“What should I do? I’m so worried Wen Yan will just dump me.”
Dad’s performance was just too awful.
Gu Sisi: Pfft.
Western Hemisphere, New York.
Finally enjoying some peace and quiet, Wen Yan thought: I’m so tired, I need to catch up on sleep.
His last thought before drifting off was As expected, this marriage really can’t happen.
