The Omega Who Canceled the Engagement Ended Up Falling for Me - Chapter 27
The next day, Xu Qing continued to drop off and pick up Fu Shuang from work. Just like the day before, she was about a dozen minutes late, but this time, no one was lurking at the office door to ambush her. Life remained calm and uneventful.
Since she had promised to make up for her girlfriend’s birthday, Xu Qing was determined to pull out all the stops for the sense of ritual and atmosphere. She planned to do thorough research online, looking up the most highly recommended restaurants in the city and ordering a birthday cake in advance.
After finishing her homework, Xu Qing stared blankly at the computer screen, thinking to herself—
Am I dreaming?
Do I really have a girlfriend?
No matter how she looked at it, the whole thing felt a bit surreal. Not long ago, Xu Qing had been suffering from a massive headache over the fiancée her family had arranged for her, and in the blink of an eye, she had a bona fide girlfriend of her own?
Xu Qing’s heart began to stir with restlessness. This “major life event” of having a girlfriend was currently known to absolutely no one, and honestly… it was a bit stifling to keep it in.
Having been single for twenty-six years, she was impatient to share this good news. However, after holding her coffee cup and mentally cycling through everyone she knew, she realized there wasn’t a single person she could tell.
Her WeChat Moments were full of relatives, family friends, work colleagues, and long-lost classmates, along with some strangers she had added over time. These people were insignificant to her; they weren’t the right audience for her joy.
If Madam Min saw through her Moments that she had a new girlfriend, would she explode with rage all over again? Xu Qing didn’t want a joyous occasion to turn into a funeral.
She logged into a social networking site she used to frequent while abroad on her personal laptop and posted a text status: “Brand-new life!”
Then, with nothing better to do, she browsed through the updates of friends she hadn’t contacted in a long time, specifically visiting the personal space of her elder sister, Xu Yuan.
Xu Yuan’s ID was “Wish.” Almost every two or three days, she would upload photos or videos to document her life. In her feed, a little girl with deep-set features was running after a newborn foal on a farm, asking the person filming in a milky voice, “Mommy, can I ride it?”
The voice that followed made Xu Qing’s heart tremble slightly.
Xu Yuan’s voice was remarkably similar to Xu Qing’s, but the elder sister’s tone was slightly deeper and more resolute. She said dotingly to the four-year-old girl, “No, you can only learn to ride when you grow up.”
The girl’s face puffed up in anger as she put her hands on her hips and said, “Hmph! I don’t believe you, you big meanie! I want to grow up right now!”
In the video, Xu Yuan laughed at her and threw something that looked suspiciously like horse manure at the little girl. “Come on then, catch me first!”
The girl screamed and charged at Xu Yuan. The sounds of other people speaking Thai could be heard in the video, and the atmosphere was so cheerful that even Xu Qing, sitting in front of the screen, felt infected by it.
Xu Qing continued to look through her updates, browsing photos of their family life. Several times she wanted to hit the “Like” button, but she restrained herself.
Having not been in contact for so many years, it was better not to disturb one another.
However, Xu Qing was genuinely happy for her sister from the bottom of her heart.
As the workday drew to a close, Xu Qing took out her laptop again to slack off. She noticed two new notifications on the social media site:
One was a “Like” from Wish.
The other was a comment from Wish: “Hey kid, it’s been a long time since you’ve surfaced. How have you been?”
Xu Qing thought for a moment and replied: “The revolution has not yet succeeded; I still need to work hard.”
While she stared at the computer in a daze for a few seconds, Wish replied: “Good job. If you need anything, find me. I’ll be waiting for you at the farm in Thailand.”
Xu Qing couldn’t help but smile. She went back to Wish’s space and liked a whole round of her family photos. Under the first video where Xu Yuan threw manure at her daughter, she commented: “Oh man, that’s bullying! Auntie is going to help you get revenge!”
A moment later, Wish replied: “Hahahaha.”
Just as she was about to slack off a bit longer while waiting to pick up her girlfriend, Xu Qing received a call from a headhunter. They introduced her to a recruitment opportunity for an architectural designer at a multinational corporation nearby.
Life’s turning points really did come out of nowhere.
Even Fu Shuang could tell she was in a good mood today. She begged to go to a nearby park to see the pigeons, and Xu Qing readily agreed.
They were in a relationship now; people in love should go on dates, take walks, and waste time on meaningless things!
There was a vendor selling fried tofu skewers at the park entrance. Fu Shuang flocked to the stall with excitement, as if she had never seen the world before.
“I’ve never had this before. Is it good?! Let’s just eat this for dinner!”
Fu Shuang’s self-satisfied expression made it look like she had just made a brilliant, heroic decision.
However, as soon as Xu Qing smelled the scent, she knew the vendor was using low-quality oil that hadn’t been changed in ten thousand years, mixed with a hint of spoilage. As for the tofu skewers themselves, they naturally weren’t made of high-quality ingredients either. Once fried, they were smeared with a sauce brimming with chemical additives.
Seeing Fu Shuang’s face full of anticipation, Xu Qing frowned and said, “It’s not clean.”
“Huh?” Fu Shuang looked confused and shocked. “Have you tried it?”
It was just a ubiquitous roadside stall; why wouldn’t she have tried it?
Perhaps her Omega girlfriend had been strictly raised since childhood.
Xu Qing felt a pang of pity. She glanced at the old woman running the stall; she was a neat person with clean clothes, but perhaps due to her age, her sense of smell had failed her completely, making her unable to detect any issues.
Forget it. The kid wants to eat it, so what could she do?
Xu Qing took Fu Shuang’s hand and said in a low voice, “You can buy one skewer to taste it, but don’t eat too many, or you’ll get an upset stomach.”
Fu Shuang happily went to the stall to pay, her eyes shining with greed as she stared at the hot tofu. She said to Xu Qing, “The colleagues who saw me eating the lunch you made today said it smelled great—much better than the takeout they ordered. A few people jokingly asked me to make a couple of extra portions next time to bring for them too.”
Xu Qing raised an eyebrow. “You didn’t get into a conflict with them, did you?”
Fu Shuang gave her a slightly reproachful look. “Sister, am I that kind of person?”
Xu Qing rubbed her chin. “Hard to say. With your temper, you’d definitely scold them back, right?”
“I didn’t. I told them my girlfriend made the lunch,” Fu Shuang said, looking at her triumphantly.
Xu Qing’s heart stirred. Imagining her Omega girlfriend showing her off at the company made the corners of her lips curl up.
Xu Qing also wanted to show off this lovely girlfriend everywhere, but she had nowhere to do so, which felt a bit stifling.
“Is that so?” Xu Qing said, feigning a calm demeanor. “That’s a pretty good reason. But your colleagues must have been disappointed to hear the news. A beautiful new colleague who isn’t single—many people must have had their hearts broken.”
“Who knows, maybe,” Fu Shuang said cockily. “Those people act all high and mighty all day. Even if they wanted to pursue me, they’d keep me at arm’s length. In their eyes, an Omega coming out to find a job to make a living must be very pitiful. They wouldn’t lower themselves to actively pursue me.”
The smile on Xu Qing’s lips faded. She thought gloomily: Fortunately, I asked her out yesterday. Otherwise, in my girlfriend’s eyes, what difference would there be between me and those people who ‘won’t lower themselves’ to pursue her?!
Xu Qing had simply wanted to spend more time creating better conditions for them to be together.
With a straight face despite her inner embarrassment, she echoed Fu Shuang: “Those kinds of people are disgusting.”
“Exactly,” Fu Shuang puffed out her cheeks, clearly genuinely annoyed. She continued, “They thought it was strange and asked why an Alpha would cook at home for me. I’m just an intern who doesn’t make much money; how could I be ‘taking advantage’ of an Alpha like that?”
Xu Qing felt a surge of anger upon hearing this. “Why do you even pay attention to people like that?”
At the same time, she realized—so her girlfriend was actually interning at a large company. How impressive.
She had originally thought Fu Shuang was working at a milk tea shop or as a supermarket cashier; after all, there weren’t many jobs available for someone of her age and educational background.
“Because we see each other all the time and there’s constant interaction between departments, so it’s hard to scold them,” Fu Shuang said, her smile looking a bit weary of the world. She continued, “This is just how the world is. People have long been accustomed to the ABO hierarchy. That’s just how they think—that Omegas should stay home quietly, serve the Alpha, and let them earn money to support the family. I didn’t argue with them. It’s pointless anyway. Let them think what they want, right, Sister?”
She was standing too close to the tofu stall, and the low-quality oily smoke drifted toward her without regard, making even her smile seem tainted by the world’s cynicism. It was a very jarring image, like a sudden thorn that pricked at Xu Qing’s mood.
“Come closer,” Xu Qing pulled her wrist, drawing her into her arms. She embraced her shallowly from behind and stroked her head, comforting her: “Your work environment is quite something. If you have to face such trashy colleagues every day, even the most passionate heart will be worn down. How about you take a break for a while and look for a chance to change jobs?”
Fu Shuang’s mood indeed improved. She snorted a laugh and said, “Actually, those people are just jealous. They wanted to chase me but didn’t expect to be a step too late, so they intentionally say disparaging things. The more they act like that, the more I’m going to live with my head held high! Those shadowy creeps can go to hell!”
“That’s my girl,” Xu Qing couldn’t help but lean down and kiss the top of Fu Shuang’s head. “I love this spirited, fearless side of you.”
The kiss landed on the warm crown of her head. A strange sensation traveled from the top of her skull; even Xu Qing clearly felt Fu Shuang’s body stiffen. She realized her mistake a moment later and let go of her precious girlfriend, feeling flustered by her own boldness.
“The tofu skewers are ready!” The old woman at the stall asked Fu Shuang with a smile, “Little girl, do you want chili sauce, green onions, and cilantro?”
Fu Shuang’s back was to Xu Qing. She was as sluggish as a jammed machine, unable even to speak properly. Xu Qing spoke up gently for her: “A little less chili, no green onions, but yes to cilantro.”
“Coming right up.” After the old woman sprinkled the toppings, she lifted the paper bag with her relatively clean hand and handed it over.
Fu Shuang and Xu Qing both reached for it at the same time. Their hands touched, and they nearly both pulled back. Fortunately, the old woman didn’t let go in a hurry, otherwise, the skewers they had waited so long for would have ended up on the ground.
Xu Qing was the first to burst out laughing, which broke the awkward tension. Fu Shuang made a face at her, though traces of a blush remained on her face.
“Let’s go, let’s go see the pigeons.” Xu Qing took the skewers and used her other hand to pull her little girlfriend into her arms.
Fu Shuang gave a soft “Mm” and leaned against Xu Qing’s shoulder, appearing still a bit unaccustomed to this strange new feeling.
Getting used to it was just a process—the process of becoming close to another person and touching their soul.
Fu Shuang quickly adjusted her mindset and rested her head on Xu Qing’s shoulder, wearing a relaxed smile.
