The Omega Who Canceled the Engagement Ended Up Falling for Me - Chapter 23
After the subway incident, many opinions and suggestions regarding Omegas using public transportation were raised online. Some of these suggestions were contradictory; for instance, one proposed that “Omegas should be prohibited from taking the subway during peak hours,” while another suggested that “Omega-only carriages should be established, and members of other genders should be prohibited from entering them.”
Arguments on the internet either depend on how the media guides them or purely on which side has more supporters. Researching human society as a group, Omegas only account for 10% of the total population, Alphas make up 35%, and the rest are the Beta group. It was obvious that the voices representing Omega interests were the weakest and most easily ignored.
“If they really prohibit Omegas from taking public transport, how will you manage your commute to work?”
Xu Qing had made a point of getting up early. Hearing Fu Shuang wake up to wash, she followed suit and got up, pretending to inquire casually.
“It probably won’t come to that,” Fu Shuang said, turning on the faucet to let the water run. After a long while, she added, “There’s still no hot water.”
Xu Qing tried to light the gas stove, but as expected, the natural gas supply hadn’t been restored yet. She called the gas company, but no one answered the phone—it wasn’t even time for the gas company employees to start work.
“Nothing we can do. Luckily the weather isn’t too cold right now!”
Fu Shuang took clean clothes from her room and slipped into the bathroom like a cat. There was the rustling sound of her undressing, and then she came running back out in her plastic slippers—
The bathroom door was halfway open. Seeing Xu Qing brushing her teeth at the door, Fu Shuang poked her head out from behind the door and smiled with squinted eyes: “Sister!”
From a distance, the carved glass door of the bathroom could block out most light and serve to obstruct the view, but if a nearly naked person pressed close to that glass, the person outside could see the inside almost completely clearly—
Just as Fu Shuang was doing now.
Through the hazy glass door, Xu Qing saw her smooth shoulders and her half-covered chest; her full curves were as beautiful as a Western oil painting, like a work of art. Xu Qing’s gaze snapped away instantly. She glanced at her and asked with feigned indifference, “What is it?”
Unaware, Fu Shuang thought she had only exposed half of her head. She gave a giggling smile and said, “I forgot to get the hair removal cream.”
Xu Qing: “…”
“You’re taking a cold shower and you’re still thinking about that?” Xu Qing’s voice was nearly sharp and cold. “What if you freeze to death?”
Fu Shuang blinked one eye. That wink felt like some kind of strobe signal that triggered a reaction in Xu Qing’s heart. Xu Qing took a breath imperceptibly, hearing Fu Shuang say piteously, “I beg you, professional image is really important!”
Xu Qing turned around, not forgetting to complain coolly, “You sure beg people easily.”
“It’s in the unopened courier box at the door!” Fu Shuang exhorted, craning her neck.
“Got it.” Xu Qing waved her hand and came back a moment later, knocking on the door with the hair removal cream.
But inside the bathroom, it was already chaotic. Fu Shuang had turned the water flow down very low, yet she was still screaming continuously from the cold—
“Thanks, Sister… hiss, just put it outside… hiss!”
Xu Qing felt both distressed and amused. Just as she expected, stimulated by the cold water, Fu Shuang finished the battle at lightning speed, having long forgotten about the hair removal cream.
“Is she intentionally seducing me?” The thought suddenly occurred to Xu Qing.
“If she is seducing me, how am I supposed to control myself?”
“Isn’t the age gap a bit too large?”
One thought followed another. Xu Qing splashed cold water on her face to stop this foolish fantasizing.
Although the kitchen fire couldn’t be lit, the toaster still worked. Xu Qing put two slices of toast in, cut them into triangles after they were heated, and added raw radish, ham sausage, and salad to make two simple sandwiches.
Fu Shuang came out of the bathroom shivering, wrapped in a layer of bath towel plus a layer of blanket, looking for an outlet to plug in the hair dryer and dry her hair.
But clearly… there was an outlet in front of the mirror cabinet, yet she seemed to have intentionally found a spot where Xu Qing could see her.
Wasn’t this a bit too deliberate?
Xu Qing took a bite of her sandwich, feeling her heart racing a bit. She kept her head down, burying her face in her phone, trying her best not to pay attention to the movement over there.
“If she seduces me, I won’t be able to hold back at all, right?”
Xu Qing reached this conclusion and even choked on a sip of milk; her mind became increasingly restless.
“I have a fiancée—accurately speaking, a former fiancée. My family situation is special. Ms. Min is a nitpicking, wicked mother-in-law who wouldn’t think much of a girl from such an ordinary family. Future interactions would be fraught with difficulties. There might even be a situation where Ms. Min secretly finds her and gives her money to leave me… Although I would definitely intervene, I can’t protect her in every possible way. Moreover, she is currently putting her whole heart into her career; a relationship might affect the choices she makes in the future, which isn’t a result I want to see. All in all, through rational analysis, my current situation isn’t suitable for her.”
Xu Qing played out a whole drama of family and mother-in-law conflicts in her mind, already starting to feel sorry for this lovely Omega in advance.
The over-thinking Student Xu squeezed the milk carton flat and threw it into the trash. Once Fu Shuang finished drying her hair, changed her clothes, and appeared in her line of sight, Xu Qing beckoned and said, “I made breakfast, do you want some?”
Fu Shuang’s hair wasn’t completely dry yet. While asking, “What time is it?” she straightened her clothes and walked toward the dining table.
“Six-fifty. What time do you start work?” Xu Qing looked at her watch and said with composure.
“Clock-in is at eight-thirty, but I have to leave an hour and a half for the commute,” Fu Shuang hurriedly picked up the sandwich Xu Qing made and took a bite, saying perfunctorily, “It’s delicious, but I can only eat it on the way.”
“No rush, I’ll drive you to work,” Xu Qing looked at Fu Shuang and said, “Sit down and finish your breakfast first.”
“I haven’t put on makeup yet,” Fu Shuang furrowed her sparse, soft eyebrows. “Sorry, Sister.”
“I’m taking you on the motorcycle. If we don’t consider congestion, we can reach any place in Shengyuan City in half an hour. Considering potential road emergencies, leaving at seven-thirty is more than enough,” Xu Qing felt she might be speaking too rigidly, so she squinted and said softly, “Come on, trust me for once!”
With those words, Fu Shuang finally changed her mind. She sat down and took a sip of milk, a layer of white foam covering her lips. Regaining her composure, she said, “Sister, if you send me, will you be in time for your own work?”
Xu Qing sighed softly for this poor little thing. If she knew that Xu Qing was living a life of “eating and waiting to die” within the system, her mindset would probably collapse.
“Our… company has flexible working hours,” Xu Qing wasn’t good at lying, and her speaking speed slowed down unnaturally. “It doesn’t matter what time I go, as long as I finish the work content.”
“That’s great,” Fu Shuang said while taking a bite of her sandwich and chewing slowly. “That kind of company culture is good. Our company is too rigid; they even have regulations for what clothes employees wear. Luckily my supervisor is an understanding person.”
It was the first time Xu Qing heard her talk about work. When she heard “regulations for what clothes to wear,” the professional image of a shirt, black skirt, and black stockings—like in some service industries—first flashed through her mind. But Xu Qing quickly noticed that Fu Shuang was wearing a shirt with fabric that looked quite high-end, paired with black wide-leg trousers that further elongated her body proportions. Her daily outfits always managed to make Xu Qing’s eyes light up.
Doesn’t she have no money?
Or is it that she makes the clothes look high-end?
Xu Qing thought back; it seemed she had never worn cheap clothes—nothing with wrinkled fabric, synthetic materials, low density, or many loose threads and stitches. From this perspective, Xu Qing also noticed she had great taste in clothing, not like a child from a poor family.
Maybe they could team up to deceive Ms. Min, creating an illusion that her family background was very good as a delaying tactic—
At least that way, the family wouldn’t oppose them too strongly.
Xu Qing had seen how her parents interfered in her sister’s marriage back then, forcing her and her ex-wife to a point of no return, and finally forcing her to go far away into self-exile. Only by experiencing it personally could one understand the madness and the total mess involved.
Although Xu Qing was currently unilaterally out of contact with her family, this was entirely thanks to the fact that she had taken a few slaps and suffered wrongful accusations and grievances. The Xu family didn’t dare push her too hard. After a while, they would surely make a comeback and once again tear her life into pieces.
It was better to plan ahead.
Her thoughts had almost circled the globe, yet Xu Qing still said to Fu Shuang with a straight face: “I might not stay in this job for long. Anyway, every job has its drawbacks. Being too idle isn’t good either; it’s easy to develop ‘lazy cancer’.”
Thinking she was joking, Fu Shuang let out a “pfft” and said with a smile, “What’s wrong with ‘lazy cancer’? Isn’t the ultimate goal of working hard so that one day you can lie in bed and do nothing, eating and waiting to die without worrying about money?”
“Is that the reason you work hard?”
“Not entirely. Just being able to survive independently is already not easy. I’m still benefiting from your assistance right now; I’m still far from the ‘eating and waiting to die’ stage. Let’s just take it one step at a time!” As she spoke, Fu Shuang put down her breakfast plate and went into her room first to work on a beautiful makeup look.
“Don’t tie a high ponytail or a bun or anything; it’s not convenient for wearing a helmet,” Xu Qing reminded her. “If we run into traffic police during the ride, be prepared.”
Fu Shuang: “Will the traffic police cause trouble for you?”
“Yes,” Xu Qing looked at her through the door frame and gave a light laugh. “If we encounter traffic police, we might have to turn around and run like rats. So, be mentally prepared.”
She thought these words would scare her, but Fu Shuang just stopped what she was doing, thought for a moment, and said, “Sister, your metaphor is too ugly.”
Xu Qing rubbed her nose awkwardly. Fu Shuang said, “We are knights, how can you call us rats? Besides, those traffic police on duty also ride motorcycles; why should ‘the officials be allowed to light fires while the common people are forbidden even to light lamps’?”
Xu Qing was speechless and gave her a thumbs-up.
If they continued to argue, Xu Qing suspected she could talk about this topic forever.
She really hadn’t expected that the young girl was rebellious to the core, yet a few days ago, she had pretended to be incredibly well-behaved here.
Why did she suddenly stop pretending?
You should know that Xu Qing was originally very into that act—the kind of “captivated unto death” into it.
Now, facing her “sudden self,” Xu Qing could only sigh silently in her heart.
