The Omega Who Canceled the Engagement Ended Up Falling for Me - Chapter 13
Stepping out of the hospital, Fu Shuang was still acting a bit awkward, her mind drifting aimlessly as if lost in thought.
Xu Qing apologized for her previous slip of the tongue: “I said the wrong thing back there. Don’t overthink it; I didn’t mean anything by it.”
Fu Shuang was wearing a white chiffon shirt with a small backpack slung over her shoulder. The strap pressed against her chest, accentuating an inviting curve. Her hands unconsciously toyed with the strap, and she didn’t show much reaction to Xu Qing’s words. It took a good while before she turned her head with a confused “Ah?” and looked at Xu Qing blankly.
Judging by this reaction, she didn’t seem to care at all about Xu Qing’s earlier gaffe.
Then again, she was someone who could publicly declare herself to be in a relationship with Xu Qing and toss around the word “darling” so easily—why would she care about a trivial remark from Xu Qing?
On the contrary, Xu Qing’s continued obsession with the matter made her feel as though she was being rather self-important.
Xu Qing let out a soft chuckle and said, “It’s nothing.”
Fu Shuang nodded with an “Oh,” appearing somewhat preoccupied.
Xu Qing then said, “I’ll add you on WeChat and transfer the money to you. I’ll also compensate you for the lost wages from missing work today.”
Perhaps hearing something related to money finally brought a spark of life back to Fu Shuang’s distracted eyes. She said, “It’s two thousand five hundred in total. One thousand of that is for my loss of income from taking leave.”
Xu Qing froze mid-air with her phone in hand: “…”
How could it be that much? How was she, a regular employee making two hundred yuan a day, supposed to feel about this?!
Fu Shuang pulled her phone out of her small bag, opened the WeChat app, clicked on “My QR Code,” and extended the phone toward Xu Qing. Her expression was much more cheerful than before.
Xu Qing looked at her skeptically: “You… can earn a thousand in a day?”
“Business is just good on the weekends!” Fu Shuang said with a beaming smile. “Originally, it would have been even more than a thousand!”
She didn’t look like she was lying, but what kind of “business” was it exactly?
Xu Qing looked her up and down, remembering her previous stint singing in a bar… surely she hadn’t gone back to her old trade?
It wasn’t that she had any professional prejudices; it was just that, given what happened last time, Xu Qing really couldn’t feel at ease.
Unable to hold back her hesitation, Xu Qing scanned her WeChat and couldn’t help but ask, “You’re not still going to bars, are you?”
“No.” Fu Shuang operated her phone, and after accepting the friend request, she entered the alias “Landlord” and sent Xu Qing a “Cat Peeking” sticker.
Amused by the cute GIF, Xu Qing asked with a smile, “Is your profile picture Koala when he was a kitten?”
“Yes,” Fu Shuang replied, then asked perfunctorily as if returning the favor, “What does Sister’s profile picture mean?”
Xu Qing’s profile picture was a long staircase leading into the boundless clouds.
It was the final scene of the movie The Truman Show, the scene the protagonist sees after gaining his freedom.
But even if she told her it was a scene from a movie, how would an Omega immersed in her own world react?
She wouldn’t be interested.
“Just a random picture I found online. It doesn’t mean anything.”
In reality, it was the profile picture she had changed to the day after she received the news of her broken engagement.
Perhaps in her heart, she intended to give this world a small bit of pushback, but who could understand such a minute emotion?
As she answered, she transferred two thousand five hundred yuan to Fu Shuang.
As expected, Fu Shuang had no interest in her answer. The moment she heard the notification sound for the transfer, a smile bloomed on her face. She happily accepted the money and said sweetly to Xu Qing, “Thank you, Sister.”
What a detestable little money-grubbing Omega.
Calling me “Sister” left and right, yet she doesn’t even care what my name is.
Xu Qing gave her a meaningful look and asked, “Where are you going next?”
Fu Shuang stood at the hospital entrance and, seeing it was still early, said, “I don’t know, maybe back to work!”
Professionalism was one thing, but Xu Qing had just given her compensation for taking leave. Taking the compensation and then going back to work anyway—earning money from both ends was a bit too greedy, wasn’t it?
Though Xu Qing was full of complaints internally, she said indifferently on the surface, “Fine. Then I won’t drop you off; I have to go handle the traffic accident.”
Seeing it was in the same direction, Fu Shuang followed her and said, “Sister, I’m headed that way too. Let’s go together!”
Saying this, Fu Shuang hailed a taxi and opened the back door for Xu Qing to get in first. She sat down next to Xu Qing, still acting like her usual heartless self. While chatting with someone on her phone, she said to Xu Qing, “Sister, I heard someone say you were rear-ended because you were trying to avoid hitting a kid who ran a red light. How old was that kid?”
Recalling the situation and using the age and build of those two Fu family teenagers as a reference, Xu Qing answered, “He looked about twelve or thirteen. Not too small. Why do you ask?”
“I just want to know how these situations are handled,” Fu Shuang said. “I heard the kid fled the scene immediately. A kid that age with zero sense of responsibility is a complete social degenerate!”
Xu Qing was startled by the word “degenerate.” Adhering to the principle of making mountains into molehills, she tried to excuse the child: “Maybe it was just his first mistake. As long as he’s okay, it’s fine. It doesn’t matter if the car is damaged; there’s always insurance to cover it.”
Fu Shuang shook her head, staring at her phone screen in a serious daze.
After a moment, she asked, “Do you have dashcam footage?”
Seeing her “get to the bottom of it” attitude, Xu Qing couldn’t help but find it funny: “What do you plan on doing?”
“Find that kid and give him a good ‘education’.” Fu Shuang rubbed her chin, deep in thought.
Xu Qing’s life principle for many years had been “the less trouble, the better,” and she had intended to advise Fu Shuang not to get involved. But seeing her serious and competitive look, she had a change of heart—
At least in this matter, she was putting in effort for her.
Then she might as well let her be.
“Alright,” Xu Qing said. “Once I get the video, I’ll send it to you.”
Fu Shuang gave a slight nod and continued messaging her friends.
After the taxi dropped Xu Qing back at the accident site, it continued on to drop Fu Shuang back at the neighborhood where her student, Jia Yan, lived.
It happened to be dinner time at Jia Yan’s house. Jia Yan’s mother warmly invited her to stay for dinner, and Fu Shuang readily agreed.
The family of three enjoyed a sumptuous meal of three dishes and a soup. Jia Yan’s mother was responsible for both disciplining the children and preparing three meals a day for the family—a microcosm of the modern full-time Omega.
The woman warmly served food to Fu Shuang, who was full of praise for her cooking. The two talked and laughed, and when Jia Yan’s mother asked about the car accident, Fu Shuang explained the general situation.
“Kids these days are always causing trouble, even running red lights on their bikes. They really put your girlfriend through a lot,” Jia Yan’s mother said with a face full of sympathy.
“Exactly,” Fu Shuang said sadly. “Not to mention the car is ruined, she was also hurt pretty badly, and we can’t find the person responsible.”
“There’s nothing you can do when something like this happens; you just have to accept the bad luck,” Jia Yan’s father, who was usually quiet, spoke up. “Fortunately, there’s insurance. It’s good enough that no one died.”
Fu Shuang couldn’t accept that logic. She was determined to find that little brat. Since the kid was riding a bike around here, it meant he likely lived in one of the nearby neighborhoods. Fu Shuang would be coming here often for lessons, so she would have plenty of chances to catch him.
Perhaps because an Omega understands an Omega best, Jia Yan’s mother asked after a moment of silence, “How old was the child?”
Fu Shuang replied, “A twelve or thirteen-year-old boy.”
“That’s about the same age as Jia Yan. I’ll ask around later and see whose kid it is. Maybe I can help you find him,” Jia Yan’s mother said with a smile.
“That would be wonderful. No matter what, we have to find the person involved and give them a stern talking-to,” Fu Shuang said in a soft tone. “If the kid makes the same mistake again, he might not be so lucky next time.”
When she put it that way, even Jia Yan’s father nodded in agreement.
After dinner, Fu Shuang spent an hour practicing piano with Jia Yan. Just then, Xu Qing sent the video over. Fu Shuang showed it to Jia Yan’s mother, who recognized him instantly—
“…Isn’t this Old Li’s grandson?”
“That kid has been a troublemaker since he was little. His parents are away doing business, and his grandparents dote on him. The old couple doesn’t know how to discipline him; they probably have no idea their grandson caused trouble outside.” Jia Yan’s mother gave Fu Shuang the rundown.
Fu Shuang felt a bit of pity: “…A left-behind child?”
Jia Yan’s mother gave her a look and whispered, “The grandparents’ pensions are higher than you young people’s salaries. They buy their grandson whatever he wants, anything and everything…”
Hearing this, Fu Shuang rolled up her sleeves. “Where do they live?”
After dealing with the traffic accident, Xu Qing returned to her residence, exhausted.
Opening the door, Koala jumped down from the sofa, rubbed against her heels, and meowed enthusiastically.
Having a cat and a beautiful Omega suddenly added to her home was something Xu Qing hadn’t quite adjusted to yet.
The living room lights were on. Clothes, bags, notebooks, and snacks were scattered across the sofa and coffee table; even the shoes at the door were left in a mess.
Xu Qing changed her shoes. At this moment, she didn’t even bother to straighten them. Instead, she chose to pick up Koala and sit on the rug, leaning against the sofa.
Just as she was enjoying petting the cat, the bathroom door suddenly opened. The “squeak-squeak” sound of slippers approached. Xu Qing looked up, and caught off guard, she nearly had a nosebleed.
