- Chapter 6 - The Paranoid Doctor × The Difficult Painter
“Mmph!” Startled, Su Niannian reflexively opened her mouth, and the spoonful of crab roe was swept inside.
Delicious! Her eyes lit up instantly. Her cheeks puffed out slightly as she chewed, a look of pure, childlike delight washing over her face.
Seeing her satisfied expression, Qi Ning felt the thrill of the “feeder.” She withdrew the spoon and asked expectantly, “Another bite?”
“Okay.” Su Niannian licked the corner of her lips, agreeing without even thinking.
Qi Ning’s gaze tracked the brief flash of her tongue. She thought to herself that the way Su Niannian ate was truly adorable—it was enough to stir up one’s appetite.
A second later, the reality of what she had just done caught up with Su Niannian. Her face turned a violent shade of crimson.
“No more!” She stood up with a sudden whoosh. “I, I’m going out for some air!”
Before the words had even fully landed, she scrambled out of the private booth as if a predator were snapping at her heels.
Left behind, Qi Ning looked genuinely disappointed. “She certainly runs fast.”
Su Niannian kept her head down and walked blindly. It wasn’t until she felt a cool breeze against her skin that she realized she had wandered onto the restaurant’s terrace.
The area was quiet and deserted. No longer needing to hide her inner turmoil, Su Niannian sat down on a bench, her eyes staring blankly ahead.
This is so weird! Why did I let her feed me? We’ve only known each other for a day, this is so embarrassing!
Furthermore, what if Qi Ning was just teasing her and didn’t expect her to actually take the bait?
The more she thought about it, the more “socially dead” she felt. Maybe I should just run away now, go home, and then message her an apology.
Suddenly, a commotion broke out, shattering her messy thoughts.
“Please, don’t do this!”
“Look at the state of your career, you’re still trying to play the ‘pure and noble’ act with me?”
“Let go!”
Su Niannian looked toward the source of the noise and saw a man and a woman struggling. They had entered from the other side of the terrace and, assuming they were alone, their argument had escalated quickly.
The man, dressed in a sharp suit, looked respectable enough, but his expression was utterly vile. He gripped the woman’s hand, his tone arrogant: “If you want to keep working in this industry, you’d better learn how to behave!”
The girl he was dragging was petite and cute, looking quite young. She struggled against him, shouting, “Get lost!”
The man was clearly incensed. He reached out to grab the girl’s collar, seemingly intent on forcing himself on her right there in public.
Outmatched by the sheer difference in strength, the girl retreated step by step, her expression collapsing into despair. Just as she reached her breaking point, a cool, feminine voice rang out from behind the man.
“Let her go.”
“Do you have any idea who I am? Mind your own—” The man turned around, face full of malice, but the insults died in his throat the moment he saw who had spoken.
Standing under the terrace lights, the beauty looked like frost on a windowpane—possessing an aloof, untouchable distance. Yet, the corners of her eyes held a hint of captivating color that made it impossible to look away.
The man instantly forgot his original goal. He looked Su Niannian up and down with a revolting gaze, shifting his target immediately.
“Well, hello. Is there something you need from me, miss?” Loosening his tie, he forced a greasy smile and began to swagger toward her.
Having escaped immediate danger, the girl realized what the man was thinking. Her body trembled; she wanted to tell Su Niannian to run, but her voice wouldn’t come out.
Su Niannian watched the man approaching with icy eyes. To him, her stillness looked like a silent invitation.
The girl breathed sharply, her eyes squeezed shut. Just as she finally summoned the courage to step forward, a scream like a slaughtered pig tore through the air.
“AAAGH!”
Su Niannian’s fist had landed squarely on the bridge of the man’s nose. As she silently withdrew her hand, blood began to gush from his nostrils in a frantic stream.
The man gasped in agony, lunging toward her with a string of filthy curses: “You little—”
Su Niannian pivoted gracefully, dodging his clumsy attack, before delivering a second punch directly to his eye socket.
“ARGH!” The intense pain sent the man crashing to the ground. He curled into a ball, clutching his eye, his body twitching in spasms.
The turn of events was far beyond anything the girl had expected. She stared blankly for a long time, only snapping out of it when Su Niannian turned her gaze toward her.
“Thank you. Are, are you alright?” The girl skirted around the groaning man and approached Su Niannian, her voice shaking.
Su Niannian: “…”
Su Niannian’s face returned to its habitual wooden expression. “I’m fine.”
She looked away, waiting for the interaction to end.
“I’m so incredibly grateful,” the girl said, wiping tears from the corners of her eyes. Her gaze was shining as she looked at Su Niannian. “My name is Tian Wan. If you hadn’t been here, I probably would have—”
Through Tian Wan’s introduction, Su Niannian learned she was a graduating senior from the Drama Department at Hai University. Because of her looks, she had been relentlessly harassed by the man on the ground. When his attempts at bribery and threats failed, he had turned to physical force leading to the scene Su Niannian had witnessed.
After listening to several minutes of gratitude, Su Niannian finally spoke: “Are you calling the police?”
Tian Wan froze. Given the man’s deep-seated influence and his frequent boasts about being close with high-ranking police officials, the thought of reporting him had never even crossed her mind.
She then realized that since the man had suffered such a loss today, he wouldn’t let it go. She shouldn’t have involved Su Niannian.
“No.” Tian Wan explained the man’s identity honestly and urged Su Niannian to leave. “You should go, quickly. I can handle the rest.”
Su Niannian saw right through the deep-seated fear in Tian Wan’s eyes. This was clearly not something the girl could handle on her own.
“I’ll do it.”
Then, under Tian Wan’s horrified gaze, Su Niannian grabbed the man who was trying to get up by the collar and delivered several more strikes to his face and neck. The force was so great the man couldn’t even manage a whimper.
“Nothing happened here today. Understood?” Su Niannian looked up, flexing her wrist as she spoke to Tian Wan.
“What took you so long?” Hearing the door open, Qi Ning looked up with a smile.
“I ran into some trouble.” The moment her eyes met Qi Ning’s, the tips of Su Niannian’s ears flushed pink as the memory of the feeding scene flashed through her mind again.
Qi Ning was about to ask what happened when her pupils suddenly contracted at something she saw in her peripheral vision.
Su Niannian’s left hand was hanging at her side. The bandages, which should have been snow-white, were now seeping with blood, looking like red plum blossoms scattered on fresh snow.
The smile vanished from Qi Ning’s face. She stood up, walked over to Su Niannian, and took her left hand, her fingers feathering gently over the wrist.
After a moment, she spoke, her voice chillingly cold.
“Who did this?”
