“Slow down!”
“Qi Ning! Slow down!”
Su Niannian clung tightly to Qi Ning’s waist, burying her face against the other woman’s back. She didn’t dare look up. Qi Ning was riding far too fast—at this speed, Su Niannian felt that if she let go for even a second, she would be hurled from the bike.
The terror reached a fever pitch as they merged onto the highway. Just catching glimpses of Qi Ning weaving through traffic and overtaking cars with reckless abandon made Su Niannian feel as though her heart would burst from her chest.
She was terrified, but no matter how much she cried out, Qi Ning didn’t react.
Maybe the wind is too loud, or she’s focusing too hard on the road to hear me, Su Niannian tried to reason.
She slowly lifted her head, hoping to find some way to grab Qi Ning’s attention, only to see that they were approaching a highway exit ramp.
Thank god, Su Niannian’s eyes lit up with relief.
However, as the exit loomed closer, Qi Ning didn’t slow down one bit. She maintained her breakneck speed, charging straight ahead like a sprinting arrow.
“No!” Su Niannian’s pupils contracted as her mind went blank. She was so consumed by fear that she couldn’t make a sound, her arms instinctively tightening their grip around Qi Ning’s waist.
As the motorcycle seemed seconds away from a collision, a jarring, disconnected image flashed across Su Niannian’s mind.
A woman with a blurred face was coldly rejecting someone’s request for a ride. Her voice was distant yet strangely familiar: 【The back seat of my motorcycle is reserved for my lover.】
Who, who was that?
Bizarrely, the vision caused Su Niannian’s panic to subside slightly. She looked up just in time to see the road sign nearly brushing past them.
At the very last second, Qi Ning flicked the bike into a tail-flick, completing a gorgeous, high-speed turn. They cleared the corner with barely an inch to spare from the guardrail.
Only then did Qi Ning finally decelerate as they glided toward the exit. She seemed to let out a soft chuckle, her stray hairs brushing against Su Niannian’s neck.
Qi Ning’s voice sounded muffled through her helmet: “You’re holding on a bit too tight.”
Her words snapped Su Niannian back to reality. They had just taken a high-speed turn like that and come out completely unscathed.
Su Niannian remained dazed for a moment before a flush of indignation rose to her face. The wind was still loud, yet she had heard Qi Ning perfectly just now. That meant Qi Ning had heard everything she said before, she simply chose not to listen.
How hateful! Su Niannian kicked her legs out slightly in frustration.
Her fear turned into a stubborn spite. Instead of loosening her grip as prompted, she squeezed even harder, pressing her entire body flush against Qi Ning’s back.
As the soft contact registered against her back, Qi Ning’s steady hands suddenly gave a sharp involuntary jerk.
“Ah!!” Su Niannian shrieked as the bike tilted dangerously for a split second.
“Sorry, sorry,” Qi Ning said, immediately regaining her composure. “You.”
Qi Ning stopped mid-sentence. She realized Su Niannian was trembling, and after a moment, she heard the faint, muffled sound of sobbing.
“Miss Su?”
“Don’t talk to me,” Su Niannian muttered, feeling utterly humiliated. She didn’t want to deal with Qi Ning for the time being.
Hearing the tremor in Su Niannian’s voice, for the first time in her life, Qi Ning felt a pang of regret over the outcome of her own calculated plan.
The unfamiliar emotion left Qi Ning somewhat stunned. As she listened to the girl’s barely audible whimpers, the habitual smile she wore unconsciously faded away.
She loathed change. She loathed any form of instability in her life. Driving the motorcycle that fast had been a test for Su Niannian, but the result was, she realized she didn’t actually want to see Su Niannian upset.
Su Niannian’s tears were enough to make her waver in her original intent.
Have I become weak? She wondered. Because of a woman I’ve only known for a single day?
By the time Qi Ning shook off her chaotic thoughts, they had reached the commercial district, only a short distance from the restaurant where she had made a reservation.
“We’re almost there,” Qi Ning said, breaking the silence and using the arrival as an opening.
But even after she brought the bike to a complete stop, there was no response. Su Niannian remained motionless, still clinging to her waist as if she had fallen asleep.
Qi Ning blinked in surprise. She smoothed her expression, removed her helmet, and turned to look at the girl. “Miss Su?”
Su Niannian was sound asleep. Through the visor of her helmet, Qi Ning could see her long, curled lashes fluttering with her breath like the wings of a resting butterfly.
She hadn’t rested properly in days, and the sudden adrenaline surge and subsequent fright had drained her energy, leaving her to drift off shortly after she stopped crying. Even in her sleep, however, her arms remained locked around Qi Ning’s waist, as if terrified of being thrown off.
Qi Ning watched her for a long while. It was only when the evening chill grew heavy that she gently shook her awake. “We’re here.”
“Mm?” Su Niannian opened her eyes dizzily, not remembering where she was for a moment. She swatted at Qi Ning’s hand and cooed unconsciously, “Sister, let me sleep a little longer.”
“You’ll catch a cold. You can sleep once we’re inside,” Qi Ning’s hand froze mid-air before her voice returned to its gentle, coaxing tone, as if talking to a child. “Alright?”
Su Niannian nuzzled against Qi Ning. The movement caused the latter’s body to stiffen instantly.
Was I just mistaken for her ‘sister’? Qi Ning pressed a hand to her brow, unable to describe the swirling emotions in her chest.
Just as Qi Ning was debating whether to simply carry her off the bike, Su Niannian finally gave a sluggish response: “Okay.”
With that, she slowly released Qi Ning and began to dismount, all while her eyes were still barely open.
“Careful!” Qi Ning, who had been watching her every move, lunged forward to catch her just as she nearly tumbled off the bike.
Su Niannian: “!”
The sudden sensation of weightlessness jolted Su Niannian awake. When she realized she was being held by Qi Ning in a protective manner, much like one would carry a kitten she was stunned.
Where am I? Wasn’t I sleeping? Why aren’t my feet touching the ground?
“So clumsy.”
Su Niannian’s ears perked up warily; she suspected someone was insulting her. “What?”
“Hmm?” Qi Ning tilted her head with feigned innocence. She set Su Niannian down and helped her remove her helmet. “I was just saying, the food at this place is very light. It will be good for you.”
Su Niannian stared blankly into Qi Ning’s eyes. Her memories of the ride finally came rushing back, and she remembered her resolve to ignore her.
“Go by yourself. I don’t want to eat anymore.”
Su Niannian pouted. To match Qi Ning’s height, she even stood on her tiptoes, trying to make herself look more imposing.
“But you haven’t had a proper meal in a long time,” Qi Ning paused, her face clouding with guilt. “If it’s because of me, I can introduce you to the shop and then leave. But please, don’t ignore your health.”
The way she lowered her eyes made her look like a wounded puppy, making it impossible for Su Niannian to stay firm.
Su Niannian: “Let’s just eat together.”
Qi Ning’s joy was visible to the naked eye. Her reaction caused the tips of Su Niannian’s ears to turn red. Unwilling to look at her further, the painter turned and hurried into the restaurant.
The commercial district was crowded, and both women were striking enough to draw attention. Following behind, Qi Ning subtly positioned herself to block the lingering gazes of passersby.
More than she hated change, she hated others coveting something she was interested in.
Qi Ning stared at the crown of Su Niannian’s head as a new thought began to take shape.
During this dinner, she was going to determine exactly what kind of “interest” she truly held for Su Niannian.
