- Chapter 15 - The Paranoid Doctor × The Difficult Painter
Because Qi Ning’s high fever refused to break, she and Su Niannian were taken directly to the hospital by the ambulance from the scene.
As soon as the surgeon arrived to check Qi Ning’s injuries, he blurted out, “Ah, why is it you again?”
Su Niannian was taken aback, realizing the speaker was the same middle-aged doctor who had treated her own wounds just a few days prior.
The junior medic, who had provided emergency care on the ambulance, stepped forward to explain the situation. The senior doctor listened with a casual, almost breezy attitude. After the briefing, she clicked her tongue in amazement. “I think you two should find a temple to pray at one of these days. You really need to wash off this streak of bad luck.”
Su Niannian: “…”
We really have been excessively unlucky lately.
Qi Ning, already feeling unwell, began to frown, but her expression shifted as the doctor continued: “I heard there’s a mountain in this city that’s quite good. It’s famous for being particularly effective for those seeking successful romances.”
Qi Ning, who had been about to snap, immediately changed her tune. “Where is it?”
Qi Ning couldn’t quite define the exact nature of her feelings for Su Niannian yet, but her rapidly swelling possessiveness was driving her to act. She wanted to be the unique, irreplaceable presence in Su Niannian’s life. If she ruled out non-exclusive feelings like friendship or sisterhood, only love remained.
Love. Qi Ning’s eyes flickered.
“I think it’s called Mount Cangyuan,” the doctor teased while examining Qi Ning’s wound. “Does a young lady like you have someone you like? You could go there with them and buy a ‘Concentric Lock.’ My daughter went there once; she’s been married for three years now.”
“A Concentric Lock, hm?” Qi Ning smiled. “Then I’ll have to see if the one I like is willing to accompany me.”
She paused and tilted her head toward Su Niannian, only to find the girl hadn’t noticed the hint at all. Su Niannian had been waiting for the doctor to get to the point. Seeing them ramble about romance for so long, she finally spoke up anxiously, “Doctor, her condition.”
“Oh, right,” the doctor looked up and began writing a prescription. “The external injuries will heal with a few days of rest, but the fever is quite severe. After you pay the fees, go for a blood test. She’ll likely need an IV drip for two days.”
Hearing the word “severe,” Su Niannian’s face paled. She grabbed her phone, eager to go through the registration and payment process. The two medics left the room one after the other to attend to other emergency patients.
Seeing Su Niannian about to leave her sight, Qi Ning’s heart tightened. She couldn’t help but call out: “Niannian.”
Su Niannian stopped immediately and returned to her side, her expression filled with worry. “What’s wrong?”
So cute. Like a puppy, Qi Ning thought.
On a whim, Qi Ning held out her hand, palm up.
Without a second thought, Su Niannian placed her own hand directly into Qi Ning’s.
Qi Ning couldn’t help but laugh softly. She shook the girl’s hand gently. “Niannian is so obedient.”
Only then did Su Niannian realize she had been teased like a pet. She glared at Qi Ning, her cheeks puffed out. “Focus on recovering. Stop playing around.”
“Mm-hmm,” Qi Ning nodded, looking the picture of compliance.
Su Niannian turned to leave again, but she hadn’t made it more than a few steps before Qi Ning called her back once more.
“Niannian, my hand hurts so much.” Qi Ning lowered her eyes, her voice small and frail. “My head is so dizzy, too.”
Su Niannian was instantly gripped by concern. “Should I go find the doctor again?”
“I don’t need a doctor. It’ll feel better if Niannian blows on it.” Qi Ning’s expression was full of anticipation, her eyes practically sparkling as she watched Su Niannian.
Su Niannian was completely defenseless against such a display. After a brief internal struggle, she surrendered.
I’m only doing this because she’s a patient. She crouched by the bedside until she was eye level with Qi Ning, then gently took her hand.
“Hoo.” Su Niannian blew softly on the wound on Qi Ning’s forearm, her voice dropped to a whisper from embarrassment. “Pain, pain, fly away.”
Her lips were slightly pursed from the blowing, making it almost impossible for Qi Ning to restrain the urge to pull her in for a kiss.
“I-is that enough?” Su Niannian had turned back into a stutterer.
Qi Ning wanted to say “no,” but fearing she might scare the girl away if she were too direct, she reluctantly nodded.
Su Niannian stood up, letting out a forced cough to hide her emotions, and headed for the door.
“Niannian.”
Hearing yet another call, Su Niannian turned back helplessly. “You—”
Qi Ning watched her from the hospital bed, looking weak and pitiful in her thin patient gown, her hair slightly messy and her lips pale. Su Niannian’s heart softened completely. She walked over, patted Qi Ning’s head, and promised: “I’ll be back very soon.”
Qi Ning, having her head patted for the first time in her life, experienced a total mental blackout.
As soon as she finished paying, Su Niannian hurried back toward the ward, wanting Qi Ning to start her IV drip as soon as possible.
As she passed a corner, her gaze was suddenly drawn to a swing in the hospital courtyard. Staring at the wooden swing, she felt dazed as flashes of familiar images flickered through her mind.
A person with a blurred face sat on a swing reading a book. Su Niannian ran over from a distance and sat happily beside them. After playing for a while, she leaned half her body across the person’s lap.
“Niannian, sit up straight and read your own book,” the person said, their voice helpless yet tender.
“I can’t read. I want Sister to read to me.”
The person laughed and pinched Su Niannian’s cheek. “Learning to be a brat, are we?”
“Mmph-mmph!”
“Alright, I’ll read to you,” the person conceded after Su Niannian glared for a moment. “I wish to weave a wedding dress for you with the morning sunlight.”
She was reciting a love poem she had written. As Su Niannian listened, she gradually drifted into a dream.
“Niannian.”
The memory was so warm it made Su Niannian want to cry.
“Sister.” After snapping back to reality, Su Niannian unconsciously muttered the word under her breath.
The next second, a voice dripping with ice pulled her back to the present: “Niannian, who are you calling?”
Su Niannian turned around to find Qi Ning standing behind her. She had no idea how long the doctor had been there. Qi Ning’s face was dark, her eyes shadowed with a brooding, dangerous intensity that Su Niannian had never seen before.
