The Noble Lady Without Magic Aims to Become an Adventurer! - Chapter 81
“Lydia, what are you doing!?”
A beastman? Simply put, a beastman is the final form of a magical beast that, through some unknown method, gains the ability to use human magic and takes on a humanoid shape to attack humans.
I’d never seen one before. They were considered little more than urban legends or creatures of pure imagination.
Beastmen could use human magic and had high resistance to it. Could I defeat something like this without a sword?
Feeling uncertain, I tried casting Fire at the beastman. It responded by casting its own Fire, canceling out my spell.
How much magic could this thing use? I cast Fire Lance and Flame Bomb, but the beastman mirrored my spells, neutralizing them.
As I tested different spells, I realized it could skillfully wield both low- and mid-level magic, making it quite troublesome. While it couldn’t use high-level magic, it effectively countered most of my mid-level spells with its own.
I needed a physical solution.
I cast a small barrier around the beastman and began shrinking it. The beastman, appearing panicked, tried to break the barrier by ramming it with its body, but the barrier held firm.
Next, it tried using ice and earth magic to shatter the barrier, but its efforts failed. Unable to move or escape, the beastman was left waiting for its inevitable end.
After observing the battle, Lydia snapped her fingers. The beastman disappeared in a burst of light.
“You win, Marloa. Honestly, I didn’t think you could defeat it with magic alone. By the way, I created that beastman specifically for training our members. Impressive, right?”
Lydia’s sultry tone and elegant gestures contrasted with the terrifying reality of what she’d created. As expected of Senior Yele’s sister, she was extraordinary—completely beyond the norm.
For now, it seemed I had passed the test, and I exhaled in relief.
“Your magic skills are quite advanced, Marloa. Your training under Yele has certainly paid off. Still, you might be better suited for support roles rather than specializing in offense.”
Lydia seemed to have paid close attention to every detail of the fight. Unlike people like Senior Yele or Senior Arnold, who had an abundance of magical power and could use advanced spells freely, I, with my originally lower-noble-level magic, had to rely on skill and precision to exploit weaknesses.
After explaining how to use the training room, Lydia returned to the Zero Division’s headquarters.
As for me, my tasks for the day were done.
Lydia had mentioned that after my graduation exam, the Vice Commander would evaluate my swordsmanship next. For now, I returned directly home from the training grounds.
That evening, I felt so exhausted that I wanted to collapse into bed, but the exam tomorrow wouldn’t wait.
Remembering the documents I’d received from Commander Jennies, I decided to look through them.
…Wait, these are the answers to tomorrow’s graduation exam.
So this is their way of ensuring I don’t fail the test? It’s a blatant cheat. But seeing as the questions seemed simple enough, I probably wouldn’t have failed even without the answers. That thought cleared some of my guilt.
Before going to bed, I informed my father about the graduation exam tomorrow and that I would begin working for the royal palace soon, albeit earlier than expected.
Fars, too, was set to take the exam with me. If he passed, he’d immediately join the Royal Knights. It seemed the royal family had taken our circumstances into account.
Perhaps this was their way of saying they wouldn’t let go of talented individuals.
Father and Otto were happy about it but also visibly worried. Father even mentioned informing Hubert and Violeta about the developments.
Fars and I were both uncharacteristically tense from the morning. To be cautious, we decided to take a carriage to the academy.
On the way, I discreetly showed Fars the documents from yesterday. He chuckled and said, “As expected of the Zero Division. They really can’t afford for us to fail.”
Upon arriving at the academy, we were taken to a separate room for the exam. It seemed the headmaster himself would oversee it.
Sitting before the headmaster made me even more nervous as I worked through the questions.
The exam was surprisingly easy, and to no one’s surprise, the questions matched the documents I had received. I couldn’t help but chuckle at how blatant it was.
How did they even get these questions and answers? I pondered this while finishing the exam.
Once I completed my answer sheet, I learned that the headmaster would grade it on the spot. I had assumed the results would be announced later, so this came as a surprise.
Fars finished around the same time and handed in his sheet. We waited together for the results.
After a short while, the headmaster returned, beaming with a wide smile.
“Marloa Efsée, daughter of the Marquis, and Fars, congratulations on your graduation!”
Relieved, Fars and I shared a moment of joy.
“Thank you, Headmaster!” we said in unison.
“I’ve been watching you both closely since your entrance exams. You’ve always performed excellently, and your skills in the martial arts tournament were impressive. Truly, you’re the pride of this academy.
Now, at the royal palace, use your talents to their fullest. I’ll send your graduation certificates to the Efsée household soon. Be sure to attend the formal graduation ceremony and party.”
“Yes, Headmaster. Thank you for these four wonderful years.”
After thanking the headmaster, we returned to class to gather our belongings. The classroom was quieter than usual, but our classmates congratulated us warmly as we bid them farewell.
“Fars, you’re moving into the palace dormitories next week, right? Do you need help with your things?”
Fars laughed as he carried both my luggage and his own.
“No need. I can use body reinforcement and wind magic to move everything easily. Besides, I’ve got that backpack Senior Arnold gave me—it might only take one trip. I don’t have much stuff anyway.”
“Well, if you’re sure. It feels a bit bittersweet, though.”
“Really? I don’t feel it much yet. My sights are set on becoming a knight commander.”
“You’re right. I’ll be working at the palace for a while too, so we’ll still see each other. Plus, with Senior Arnold and Senior Yele around, it won’t be lonely.”
“Exactly! If you ever feel lonely, just come visit me. I’ll be at the dorms!”
Laughing together, we returned to the estate. Immediately, we went to Father’s study to report on the day’s events.
Fars handed his luggage to a waiting servant and followed me to Father’s study.
