The Movie Queen’s Charming Little Wife: Feigning Amnesia Online - Chapter 39
Chapter 39
For a moment, Lin Mo froze, unsure of how to respond.
It was Qing Jing who appeared again to rescue her from the predicament.
Qing Jing gave Lin Mo a look, signaling her to go back inside. She then stepped forward with a beaming smile, picking up a teapot to refill Mu Fei’s cup with lemon water.
“Miss, Lin Mo is an employee of our company, and she is currently on duty. You can contact her after work hours.”
Mu Fei maintained a gentle expression, looking at the shop manager uniform Qing Jing was wearing.
“Hello, are you the manager of this shop? I am Lin Mo’s friend, Mu Fei. Shall we get to know each other?”
She extended her hand toward Qing Jing. Qing Jing smiled back and shook it.
“Hello, my name is Qing Jing, and I am the manager. Lin Mo is currently working for me.”
Mu Fei blinked her beautiful eyes, a look of surprise crossing her face as her lips curved into a pretty arc.
“She’s actually working… that’s wonderful. Thank you, Boss Qing, for looking after her. She doesn’t have much experience. If she makes any mistakes at work, I hope you can be patient with her.”
The smile on Qing Jing’s face didn’t waver, and her voice remained steady and pleasant.
“She is very creative in her planning work and has already brought a lot of profit to my shop. It is I who should thank her. She must be very happy to have a friend who cares about her so much.”
Mu Fei’s expression stiffened for a split second, but she adjusted quickly, keeping up her pleasant smile.
“That’s truly great. It seems I should learn more from her regarding work as well.”
The two of them exchanged more pleasantries for a while before Qing Jing left. Mu Fei continued to sit there, sipping her coffee and occasionally gazing at the scenery outside the window.
A while later, Qing Jing brought over a small piece of cake. Mu Fei thanked her with a smile, but let the cake sit there untouched.
Inside the office, Lin Mo was feeling restless. She couldn’t figure out why Mu Fei was here, but surely it had nothing to do with her? Why wasn’t she leaving? Was she really waiting to “wait for the rabbit” (ambush) Xue Luhe?
Strangely enough, for the past few days, Xue Luhe had entered the shop as soon as the doors opened, as if she were punching a time clock. Today, however, there was no sign of her.
As noon approached, she still hadn’t appeared. Mu Fei had refilled her coffee twice, and the faint smile on her face was gradually disappearing, though she continued to wait.
Qing Jing walked into the office and came to Lin Mo’s workstation, asking in a low voice:
“Do you not really want to meet with Mu Fei?”
Lin Mo nodded, then shook her head, choosing her words carefully:
“My relationship with her partner is okay, but I’ve only met her a few times.”
Qing Jing was a sharp and clever person; with just that hint, she understood the whole situation. She couldn’t help but let out a low, lonely laugh.
“I didn’t expect you to be… so popular.”
Lin Mo waved her hands awkwardly:
“It’s really not that. I’m just friends with her partner, but I have to avoid suspicion…”
Qing Jing’s eyes grew deep, and she suddenly spoke:
“You are so likable; it’s only natural that you’re popular.”
Lin Mo felt her cheeks redden and quickly lowered her head. She was truly speechless regarding these women. Qing Jing was so excellent and did everything flawlessly, while she was so simple… it was too hard!
Lin Mo could only change the subject abruptly:
“It’ll be the lunch break soon. I still have to go meet her and have a chat.”
Qing Jing said gently:
“If you don’t want to go, I’ll bring your lunch to this room. You can eat at your desk and don’t have to go out.”
Lin Mo was taken aback:
“No need, really! Mu Fei isn’t a monster. She’s actually quite nice. Just having a chat won’t hurt.”
Qing Jing continued with a smile:
“I just want you to be comfortable. Don’t do things you’re unwilling to do. After all, only when employees are in a good mood can they work seriously, right?”
After saying this, she gave Lin Mo a mischievous wink.
Lin Mo laughed awkwardly, pretending not to understand the underlying implications. She thought to herself how exhausting being human was—why couldn’t she just become a national treasure giant panda? She wouldn’t have to do anything, just eat and sleep every day, with so many people competing to serve her. How great that would be!
At lunchtime, Lin Mo finished her work, walked out, and sat opposite Mu Fei’s table, flashing a bright smile:
“Hi! I have my lunch break now, so I came over. Why are you here?”
Seeing her, Mu Fei smiled happily and poured water for Lin Mo herself.
“You work so hard, working for so long. Are you short on money lately? Come, drink some water and rest first. Shall we go have lunch together later? Do you know any good restaurants around here?”
Lin Mo found the mysterious “best friend” tone a bit hard to stomach and gave an awkward smile:
“The shop provides meals, so I usually don’t go out to eat… anyway, is there something specific you’re here for today? You must be in West City for work, right?”
The smile on Mu Fei’s face gradually dimmed, turning into a look of loneliness and sadness. She lowered her head, looking frail and pitiable.
“I do have work, an event tomorrow. But I’m a bit… Oh, never mind. Things in the entertainment industry are so complicated; I won’t pour out my grievances. Let’s just drink coffee and chat. To say something happy, Xi Shen and I are together now. You probably didn’t know yet?”
Lin Mo had been waiting for this line. She immediately mobilized every muscle in her face to put on a super-exaggerated congratulatory expression:
“Oh my god! I always thought you two were a perfect match. Finally together! Congratulations, congratulations! You must stay together for a hundred years!”
Mu Fei’s gaze swept over Lin Mo’s exaggerated expression, and a happy, shy smile curled at the corners of her mouth.
“Actually, I didn’t know how to tell you about this because you used to like Xi Shen. I was afraid you’d feel uncomfortable. Seeing that you’re quite happy makes me feel relieved. I was most afraid of you being unhappy.”
Lin Mo felt the words were strange, but she didn’t think too deeply about it, only saying with a laugh:
“What do you mean ‘quite happy’? I’m ecstatic, okay? You two being together is a match made in heaven. My younger, ignorant self was just blinded by lard when I liked Xi Shen. Looking at him again after my amnesia, Xi Shen isn’t even that great. You two are a match made in heaven.”
These words were quite normal; Lin Mo was speaking her true feelings. After transmigrating into the book as a female supporting character, she really couldn’t understand why the original host liked Xi Shen. It was clear that Xi Shen had zero interest in her and had even plotted to frame her.
However, in the quiet of the night, Lin Mo had pondered this and realized that Xi Shen’s actions were actually correct from the perspective of the original novel’s leads.
From the female lead Mu Fei’s perspective, the story went like this: she was suddenly attacked and rescued by a hero (Xi Shen); while shaken, her feelings for him grew. Xi Shen quickly discovered that the villainous Lin Mo was behind the attack. So, Xi Shen and Mu Fei conspired to beat her at her own game, kidnapping Lin Mo to Mu Fei’s room and taking photos. The photos were sent to Xue Luhe, Lin Mo was imprisoned until death, Xi Shen lost a troublesome pursuer, Mu Fei lost a competitor, and their relationship deepened.
So, from the leads’ perspective, the cannon fodder makes trouble, they thwart the plot, remove the nemesis, and their love blooms—it’s very satisfying and sweet.
But from Lin Mo’s perspective, it was agonizing.
The original host wasn’t a kind person, but since Lin Mo occupied the body, she felt obligated to uncover the truth while keeping the body away from these strange people and events to live a peaceful life. Now that the truth was partially uncovered and the logic made sense, Lin Mo had stayed away from Xi Shen. But today, this Mu Fei had to come find her and speak like a “Green Tea Bitch” (manipulative girl), which was exasperating.
She just wanted to end this conversation filled with the scent of green tea and go eat. Chef Liu had made sweet and sour fish today! The aroma traveled for miles; her inner foodie was already flying toward it!
Hearing this, Mu Fei’s perfect expression indeed cracked a little, then she smiled and said:
“It’s best that you can think that way. Although Xi Shen might not be as excellent as others, he is the person who treats me best in my heart.”
Lin Mo smiled calmly, a hint of disdain in her tone:
“A girl shouldn’t just look for someone who treats her well… but you two are indeed a good match. I’m happy for you. Anyway, the canteen is probably serving food now. I’m going to eat. What about you?”
With such an obvious hint for her to leave, Lin Mo didn’t believe Mu Fei couldn’t hear it. However, Mu Fei just nodded and said with a smile:
“I have to wear a tight gown tomorrow, so I can’t eat. You go ahead. I’ll sit here for a while longer.”
Lin Mo looked at her slender waist and felt a bit sorry. After all, a beauty acting pitiable in front of you would make anyone feel soft-hearted.
“Should I… bring a portion of food back for you?”
Mu Fei’s eyes suddenly lit up, but then she pouted and shook her head:
“No… I can’t let it all go to waste at the last minute. You go.”
Lin Mo looked at the cup in front of her. It was indeed pure black coffee, the kind without sugar or milk that many people on diets or fitness routines like to order. Though she felt pity, she couldn’t help if that’s what the other person wanted. Lin Mo could only turn and leave.
At the lunch table, Mu Fei became the topic of conversation. Everyone had seen Lin Mo talking to her, so they surrounded Lin Mo with a barrage of gossip:
“Momo, your network is so broad! How do you know Mu Fei?” “Yeah, are you two on good terms? She was smiling at you the whole time.” “Exactly! But it makes sense; even Xue Luhe is pursuing our Momo. It’s not strange for someone like her to know a dozen stars!”
Lin Mo awkwardly wiped away some imaginary sweat:
“That’s really not true. I only know these two stars. Mu Fei’s current partner was my classmate; that’s how we met. We didn’t talk about much, just catching up.”
Everyone was a bit skeptical, but they were also a little afraid of Lin Mo now. With Xue Luhe as her backer, they didn’t dare provoke her or pry too much. They felt Lin Mo’s background might be deeper than the ocean—one unhappy move and she could crush them like bugs. So, they just exchanged glances while eating, no longer gossiping with her.
Li Kexin, who usually loved gossip the most, was now shrinking back and hadn’t said a word. Only Xiao Yuan asked a few more questions, which Lin Mo answered.
Chef Liu’s sweet and sour fish was truly fragrant. Lin Mo ate two big bowls of rice with it, not putting her chopsticks down until her stomach was round.
Just as she walked out of the dining area, Lin Mo saw a tall, slender figure appear outside the coffee shop’s floor-to-ceiling window. Through the glass, the person’s curves were elegant, wearing a highly stylish black coat, one hand in a pocket, with a very nonchalant posture and expression.
It was Xue Luhe, who hadn’t been seen all morning.
At this moment, Mu Fei was standing in front of Xue Luhe, gesturing with a serious expression and saying something. Mu Fei’s expression wasn’t as relaxed as Xue Luhe’s; instead, she looked very anxious, speaking quickly with her lips moving rapidly. Xue Luhe, on the other hand, was just leaning lazily against a lamppost, occasionally shaking her head, too lazy even to speak.
Lin Mo watched for less than a minute, wondering if they were arguing, when Xue Luhe spotted her. Xue Luhe immediately stood up straight and waved toward the inside, signaling Lin Mo to come out.
Behind her, the group of waiters was incredibly excited but forced themselves to stay calm, not actually cheering out loud. They just stared at Lin Mo with burning gazes, as if they wanted to push her out with their eyes alone.
Lin Mo felt like there were needles in her back. Having no choice, she walked to the door under everyone’s gaze and asked Xue Luhe from a distance:
“Did you call me out for something?”
Xue Luhe nodded and beckoned again, a smile on her lips.
“Come here.”
Lin Mo didn’t know what was happening to her. She had intended to go back into the coffee shop, but her feet involuntarily walked in the opposite direction. Her body seemed to have formed a conditioned reflex of being particularly obedient to Xue Luhe.
Mu Fei turned her head as soon as Lin Mo came out. Seeing Lin Mo, her already anxious expression revealed a hint of a breakdown. Lin Mo just walked up to Xue Luhe as requested, but didn’t stand right next to her; instead, she stood in the middle, forming a triangle with the two of them.
“Is there something?”
Lin Mo asked simply, not expecting any serious answer. However, she heard Xue Luhe’s voice:
“I want you to be closer to me. My mood gets better just looking at you.”
Mu Fei’s face turned green instantly. She looked at Xue Luhe in disbelief, unable to believe such saccharine words had come out of Xue Luhe’s mouth!
Lin Mo rolled her eyes. This woman was getting more and more “greasy” lately. What was with the occasional cheesy pickup lines? Did she think she was so cool?
“But my mood gets bad when I see you. In that case, I’m leaving.”
Lin Mo turned to walk away, ignoring the expressions of the two behind her. Mu Fei’s eyes almost popped out—who did Xue Luhe think she was? How did Lin Mo dare to defy her like this? It wasn’t like this before! The old Lin Mo was like a mouse seeing a cat when she saw Xue Luhe, ready to flee in a heartbeat. What happened now? Had the mouse evolved into a Super Saiyan Mouse?
Mu Fei was both surprised and sad. This contrast immediately made her feel as low as dust. To wait for Xue Luhe, she had stayed in the coffee shop all morning. Now that she finally saw her, she pleaded humbly but was completely ignored. Meanwhile, Lin Mo dared to snap at Xue Luhe and walk away!
Mu Fei felt her cheeks burning and wanted to flee the scene, but thinking about her bleak upcoming endorsements, she endured.
Xue Luhe took a few steps forward, catching up to Lin Mo and grabbing her wrist, coaxing her in a low voice:
“Don’t be in such a hurry to leave. I told you before, there is a secret about you. Do you want to hear it?”
Lin Mo stopped reluctantly, gave Xue Luhe a sideways glance, and said nothing.
Xue Luhe then turned toward Mu Fei, her tone suddenly becoming cold:
“You come over too.”
As soon as she spoke, Xue Luhe pulled Lin Mo’s wrist and strode toward the shop, leaving a cold wind blowing in Mu Fei’s face.
Mu Fei: “…” She grit her teeth, lowered her head, and jogged to follow.
Lin Mo was curious. She looked back and asked Xue Luhe in a low voice:
“What are you going to say? Does it have something to do with Mu Fei?”
Xue Luhe looked straight ahead as she strode along, only saying:
“You’ll find out in a bit.”
Lin Mo looked back at Mu Fei, who was jogging behind them, her curiosity growing. She followed obediently into the shop.
Then, the three of them encountered Qing Jing.
Qing Jing, in her shop manager uniform, though not physically large, stood in the middle of the path, blocking the way for the three of them.
Qing Jing spoke to Lin Mo with a smile:
“Momo, go back and sleep for a bit; it’ll be time for work soon. As for any disputes between the two guests, please resolve them yourselves and don’t involve my employee.”
The usually gentle and politely restrained Qing Jing had almost never spoken such forceful words. Lin Mo was amazed. It had to be said that people like Qing Jing, who were used to being gentle, sometimes lacked a bit of an edge. Now, for some reason, she seemed to have more of an edge than before, making her even more radiant.
She was actually standing in front of international film queen Xue Luhe and directly challenging her; Lin Mo felt quite a bit of admiration for her courage.
Mu Fei, behind them, was even more stunned, deeply doubting her worldview: What exactly went wrong? The Xue Luhe whom everyone fears and no one dares to snap at is being snapped at repeatedly today—even a small coffee shop manager dares to challenge her? This is completely unscientific!
Xue Luhe listened to Qing Jing’s words with indifference and spoke with a cold laugh:
“Lin Mo is on her lunch break; you have no control over her. Move!”
Qing Jing narrowed her eyes slightly while Xue Luhe tilted her chin up arrogantly. Their gazes met in the air, crackling with sparks.
Lin Mo really wanted to sit on the side and eat popcorn while watching the show, but then she remembered that she was the center of their dispute. She didn’t want to “eat melons” (gossip) anymore; she just wanted to flee. So she tried to pull her wrist away from Xue Luhe’s hand. At the first tug, Xue Luhe whipped her head around and glared at Lin Mo.
Lin Mo was immediately frightened into stillness, staying on the side like a quail. She heard several waiters gossiping nearby.
“Ahhhh, look here! How did the boss lady go up against Xue Luhe? Are they going to fight?” “No, I just heard Sister Qing tell Xue Luhe to let go of Momo, so the point is still on Momo? How exciting!” “Holy crap, what kind of luck does our shop have to pick up a treasure like Lin Mo from the roadside? I saw long ago that Sister Qing’s feelings for Momo weren’t ordinary!”
Lin Mo thought to herself that she wouldn’t be able to clear her name even if she jumped into the Yellow River now. She had become a hidden boss with a mysterious identity, a deep background, and a wide network, having enchanted both big bosses—Xue Luhe and Qing Jing—at the same time. Her methods were clearly extraordinary!
She didn’t know what her colleagues would think of her in private… but the problem she had to solve right now was to prevent Xue Luhe and Qing Jing from fighting in the shop.
Lin Mo looked up to signal Qing Jing, but Qing Jing was busy throwing “eye daggers” at Xue Luhe and had no time for Lin Mo. Lin Mo then reached out to pull Xue Luhe’s sleeve, but she was roughly brushed off as Xue Luhe also ignored her.
Lin Mo wanted to cry but had no tears. She just wanted to say: Why are you two arguing here? Can you please listen to my opinion?
As expected, when hunters fight over prey, no one wants to hear the prey’s opinion. Sigh, as the prey, she was truly pitiable—she didn’t feel like a heartthrob at all!
Qing Jing didn’t back down. While unpracticed at competing with Xue Luhe in a staring contest, she said with a firm tone:
“Momo is my employee. You are being quite rough with her. I have the right to protect her. Please let go!”
Xue Luhe gave a contemptuous cold laugh, paired with her nonchalant yet extremely disdainful gaze. The lethality was at its maximum as she spoke words that cut to the bone:
“Me, rough with her? Which eye did you see that with? Besides, I like being direct—unlike you, who loves being devious and manipulative. Move, or I’ll trash your shop.”
Lin Mo’s mouth fell open. She had always known Xue Luhe was good at cutting people down, but she never imagined she could do it to this extent. Truly very direct!
Qing Jing’s face suddenly turned pale, her weakness completely exposed. She had always known that her act of sending the wine wasn’t upright, but she had always held onto the hope that it proved she cared about Lin Mo, so Lin Mo shouldn’t mind too much. But the result was the opposite of her expectations: Lin Mo not only minded but had distanced herself because of it…
And now, Xue Luhe saying such things made Qing Jing feel extremely humiliated. Xue Luhe clearly had the upper hand. She leaned against a coffee table like a boss, looking at Qing Jing with disdain, and continued contemptuously:
“You, trying to fight me for a person? Heh!”
Qing Jing’s expression was terrible. She suddenly looked at Lin Mo hiding behind Xue Luhe, her voice trembling:
“Lin Mo, are you really… going with her?”
For a moment, Lin Mo couldn’t tell which way “going with her” meant. She hesitated, then nodded tentatively.
Qing Jing laughed unexpectedly, as if she had heard some kind of joke. She laughed loudly and happily:
“Hahahaha…”
Lin Mo was stunned. She had never heard Qing Jing laugh like that and had no idea what she was laughing at. Qing Jing even laughed until tears came out, then turned and left without a word. Her back looked determined, but an occasional stumble revealed the massive emotional turmoil inside her.
Lin Mo felt like Qing Jing had misunderstood something. She wanted to reach out like “Erkang” and call her back: Don’t go! Listen to my explanation! I’m not saying I’m leaving the coffee shop with Xue Luhe! I’m just going to the private room to hear her secret! There’s really no need for such an intense reaction!
Xue Luhe gripped Lin Mo’s wrist tightly, as if afraid she would run after Qing Jing. she dragged Lin Mo toward the private room at a fast, unquestionable pace.
“Hey, hey, hey, slow down!”
Lin Mo stumbled along, repeatedly looking back at Qing Jing. Seeing the other woman disappear into the office, she looked forward again, thinking she would explain when they met in the afternoon.
Inside the private room, Xue Luhe pressed Lin Mo into a chair somewhat roughly, then just waved her hand at Mu Fei, too lazy to even say a word. Mu Fei found a seat herself. Xue Luhe sat next to Lin Mo and began scrolling through her phone.
Lin Mo and Mu Fei exchanged a look, both seeing the confusion in the other’s eyes, but with one difference: there was a trace of fear in Mu Fei’s eyes.
“Look at this.”
Xue Luhe suddenly handed over her phone screen, pushing it right under Lin Mo’s eyes and waving it a bit.
The picture showed an old toy—the kind of plastic doll with movable joints that young girls liked to play with. The doll wore a dress and had blonde hair; its somewhat yellowed face had lipstick drawn on it. The appearance couldn’t really be called refined. But it was lying in a large red velvet box; the velvet in the box looked much more expensive than the doll itself.
Lin Mo was completely baffled:
“What is this? An antique you found somewhere?”
From the moment she brought out the photo, Xue Luhe had been closely watching Lin Mo’s expression, not missing even the slightest movement in her eyebrows or the corners of her eyes. However, she saw no flaws. Lin Mo truly looked like she was seeing the toy for the first time.
A complex mix of emotions appeared in Xue Luhe’s eyes—disappointment, but also a sense of relief.
“You don’t recognize it anymore…”
Xue Luhe murmured. She placed the phone on the table, leaned back in her chair, and suddenly closed her eyes.
Lin Mo: ???
Hey, wake up! What exactly is going on? Weren’t you going to come in and tell a story? Why are you lying back and closing your eyes to rest?
Mu Fei poked her head over to look at the phone screen, a look of uncertainty on her face, but she didn’t dare speak. Lin Mo looked at Mu Fei and mouthed the question:
“Do you know?”
Mu Fei shook her head hesitantly.
Xue Luhe seemed to have seen their interaction even with her eyes closed:
“Mu Fei, this is the second time you’ve seen this. Tell her.”
Lin Mo was even more confused, looking at Mu Fei with anticipation. Mu Fei looked slightly nervous, sitting up straight and tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, choosing her words carefully:
“Senior… that was shortly after we first met. We were talking about our childhoods. I said that when I was little, my parents moved around a lot, and I had a very good friend, but unfortunately, we only played together for three months before my family moved away. After that, Senior brought out this photo and showed it to me, asking if I recognized it.”
Xue Luhe’s expression was as calm as water, but Lin Mo happened to see her lightly biting her lip.
Mu Fei hesitated at this point. Lin Mo pressed:
“So, do you actually recognize this or not?”
Mu Fei instinctively shook her head, but then added:
“But I truly did have a very similar toy when I was little. At the time, I stared at this for a long while, thinking it looked a lot like my childhood one, but I couldn’t be sure. Maybe I nodded, but I immediately denied it, saying I didn’t recognize it.”
Lin Mo could roughly imagine the scene: Mu Fei looked at the photo, lost in thought, couldn’t help but nod, and then hurriedly denied it. This whole sequence of actions was simply masterful. Lin Mo didn’t believe for a second that Mu Fei hadn’t done it on purpose. All women could see through these tactics; it’s just that some people disdained using them.
It was “playing hard to get.” On the surface, she didn’t recognize it, but Xue Luhe surely filled in the gaps in the story: She recognized it, but didn’t want to say so for the sake of her dignity.
Connecting this to Xue Luhe’s various acts of looking after Mu Fei afterward… Lin Mo suddenly had an epiphany. She turned to Xue Luhe and asked directly:
“So you recognized the wrong person, right? You also had a childhood playmate? This doll was your token?”
Still with her eyes closed, Xue Luhe raised her left hand to press her furrowed brow, nodding somewhat reluctantly. Mu Fei couldn’t help but shrink back, as if trying to hide herself, her eyes filled with unnameable terror. If she angered Xue Luhe… losing a layer of skin would be the least of it.
Mu Fei now deeply hated her past self. Why did she nod back then? Wouldn’t it have been better just to deny it directly? What good was there in being involved with Xue Luhe? Unfortunately, she didn’t understand these things at the time.
Lin Mo, however, was listening with great interest. It was rare to see Xue Luhe make such a lapse in judgment. Looking at her current chagrined expression was particularly interesting.
Lin Mo pressed the attack:
“So? You and your childhood playmate played with this doll together? And then you recognized the wrong person and supported someone else as your playmate for almost half a year? That’s too hilarious! Hahahaha!”
As Lin Mo spoke, she couldn’t help but start laughing. She couldn’t help it—Xue Luhe’s expression right now was just too funny.
Xue Luhe couldn’t take it anymore and snapped her eyes open, slamming her hand on the table:
“Stop laughing!”
If it had been before, Lin Mo might have been frightened. But now, knowing Xue Luhe liked her, she had become a bit “floaty.” Seizing this rare opportunity to see Xue Luhe embarrassed, she kept laughing:
“Hahahaha, this is truly too funny! I feel so bad for the person who was actually your playmate. Searching for someone based on a piece of junk token and then finding the wrong person! Your playmate would probably be fuming if they knew! So, have you found the person now? Is this your secret? Are you unwilling to say it because it’s too embarrassing?”
Lin Mo teased Xue Luhe while laughing, leaning back and forth to look at her face. She was having a great time, feeling like a liberated serf singing a song! The brilliant, high-IQ Xue Luhe, who played with others’ feelings every day, had now been played with herself—the whole thing was hilarious no matter how you looked at it.
However, as Lin Mo was laughing, she suddenly felt something was off. Turning her head, she saw Xue Luhe just quietly staring at her. That look had a sense of “I’m just quietly watching you act cool.”
Seeing Lin Mo look over, Xue Luhe said slowly:
“I found that person. But she’s currently laughing.”
Lin Mo’s laughter stopped abruptly. In disbelief, her eyes almost popped out as she looked at Xue Luhe!
“What kind of nonsense are you talking!”
“I said, I found the person. She’s in this private room.”
Xue Luhe’s gaze was burning as she stared into Lin Mo’s eyes. Suddenly, a trace of sorrow appeared in her vision. She continued in a voice that flowed slowly like a cello, heavy and steady:
“Unfortunately, she has amnesia.”
Holy crap, holy crap, holy crap!
Was the original host that amazing? Was this plot actually in the original novel? I don’t remember! Damn it, why didn’t I memorize the original book word-for-word and digest it!
Lin Mo was so shocked her brain stalled. She just stared at Xue Luhe, not daring to say anything, fearing that in the next second, Xue Luhe would grab her and start a family reunion!
You have the wrong person! Maybe the original host was your childhood playmate, but I’m not! The “core” has been swapped; it was swapped long ago!
Lin Mo’s inner self roared frantically, ten thousand horses galloping through her mind. She wanted to beat her chest and pull her soul out for Xue Luhe to see, to tell her she truly wasn’t that person! She didn’t know anything about those childhood memories, and that toy wasn’t hers either! It all belonged to the original host, and the original host was gone!
However, Lin Mo had to keep her mouth tightly shut. She couldn’t say a word. If she did, she feared Xue Luhe would hang her upside down from the West City gate for three days and nights until the original host’s soul was forced back.
Xue Luhe pressed on, her gaze fixed firmly on Lin Mo, very serious:
“Lin Mo, do you think I should treat this playmate well?”
Lin Mo, of course, nodded frantically. This playmate was “her,” so of course she should be treated well!
Xue Luhe asked again:
“Then, should my playmate be with me forever?”
Lin Mo’s head was full of question marks, and she blurted out:
“What kind of logic is that? That’s just a playmate, not a wife. What, did you sign some devil’s contract?”
Xue Luhe stared intently into Lin Mo’s eyes:
“What if I say a contract was indeed signed?”
Lin Mo was speechless, unable to imagine what kind of contract could be signed. She wanted to ask more when she saw Xue Luhe open her phone again, scroll through a photo, and hand it over.
Lin Mo looked closely at the photo and was instantly speechless. The photo showed an old, yellowed piece of paper with a few lines of text written on it. The characters were large and crooked, like those of a primary school student who had just learned to write. Was this written by the original host when she was little?
“Marriage Guarantee”
When I grow up, I will marry you. I especially guarantee that if I marry someone else, I will never get to eat Popping Candy again! Mo guarantees here.
The character for “candy” in “Popping Candy” was written in Pinyin, and the letter “O” in “MO” had a large opening at the top, making it look a bit like the letter “U.” Looking at the age, the person who wrote this was probably around seven or eight years old.
Xue Luhe silently took the phone away and asked softly:
“This guarantee… do you not acknowledge it?”
Lin Mo: “…No, this signature isn’t me either? Besides, I have amnesia; things from before don’t count!”
Xue Luhe put away her phone without saying much, then just turned to look at Mu Fei:
“Her surname is Mu, MU.”
Lin Mo had another epiphany, realizing why Xue Luhe had recognized the wrong person—on this guarantee, the “O” and “U” were indistinguishable! “Mo” and “Mu”—if it were a child, it would be normal for them not to pronounce them clearly! Plus, Mu Fei coincidentally had a childhood playmate she had lost touch with years ago. All these coincidences added up, causing Xue Luhe to completely recognize the wrong person and never seek further verification.
Was this the root cause of why Xue Luhe was so deeply in love with Mu Fei in the original novel? Then why had Xue Luhe discovered the problem now?
Lin Mo felt that whatever she said wouldn’t be quite right, so she simply said nothing.
Xue Luhe turned toward the pale Mu Fei and said coldly:
“For the sake of the past, I won’t deal with you. But from now on, I won’t help you anymore. Take care of yourself. You may leave.”
Mu Fei stood up despondently. She opened her mouth as if to say something, but in the end, only one phrase came out:
“I’m sorry…”
Xue Luhe waved her hand, unwilling to look her in the eye.
As Mu Fei took her handbag and walked out, she accidentally bumped her knee against the corner of a chair. A large bruise quickly formed. She just stumbled and walked out.
The door closed, leaving only Xue Luhe and Lin Mo in the room. The atmosphere shifted instantly, becoming ambiguous and cloying.
Lin Mo’s mouth felt dry as she spoke:
“So, you’re sure that MO is me?”
Xue Luhe suddenly moved closer, her nose almost touching Lin Mo’s. Lin Mo tried to shrink back, only to find the back of her neck held by Xue Luhe, making her unable to move.
This posture… were they going to kiss? Damn it, they couldn’t!
Lin Mo reached out frantically to push Xue Luhe away, but accidentally touched something soft, her hand full of it.
