The Movie Queen’s Charming Little Wife: Feigning Amnesia Online - Chapter 28
Chapter 28
The city of Suzhou had been locked in a cycle of continuous rain for the past few days. The occasional peek of the sun only served to emphasize the chilly, gloomy atmosphere.
As the days passed, Lin Mo had prepared her resume. There were no lies or exaggerations; she only listed her university and some personal attributes. She left the work experience section blank.
The resume was barely half a page long. She uploaded it to a recruitment website and began applying for positions that caught her eye.
Every role she applied for was out of town—the further from Suzhou, the better. Suzhou was in the rainy South, so she aimed her resume directly toward the North. After all, across both her past life and this one, she hadn’t seen much of the world. Now seemed like a good time to go out and see what else was there.
Aside from going out for groceries and cooking at home, Lin Mo spent every day in front of her computer, constantly refreshing her applications.
Job hunting was a soul-crushing endeavor, especially for someone like her: a graduate who wasn’t a “fresh” recruit anymore and had zero work experience. Not a single HR representative bothered to respond.
Finally, one or two HR managers viewed her resume and even chatted with her briefly, but none led to anything concrete.
Several days into the search, with still no sign of a job, Lin Mo received an unexpected message.
“What? You’re increasing my dividend ratio? Why?”
When Lin Mo received the call from the executive secretary of Fanghu Group (formerly Lin Group), she almost thought it was a scam. She pulled the phone away to check the number; it was indeed the company’s landline.
The female voice on the other end was sweet and gentle:
“Well, I don’t have all the details on my end, but you can contact Chairman Yue personally to find out! This was a direct order from Chairman Yue himself!”
Her “good” uncle, Yue Lian? The man currently in charge of the group who wouldn’t even give her the time of day?
Just over a week ago, his son had told her they were going to revoke her dividend rights!
Utterly confused, Lin Mo tried to call Yue Lian. Unfortunately, she didn’t have her uncle’s private number. She called his assistant, who said he’d ask and get back to her. There was no follow-up.
Regardless, an increase in dividends was a good thing. Lin Mo didn’t dwell on it too much and continued her active job search.
Lately, Xue Luhe had been very quiet. She hadn’t appeared once, and Lin Mo didn’t even know if she was still staying across the hall.
She was happy for the peace. The anxiety that had plagued Lin Mo since their last talk began to subside, allowing her to focus on her life.
However, since that day, Lin Mo had been quite dismissive toward Xi Shen’s calls. It got to the point where even Lu Ruoruo came to nag her:
“What did Xi Shen do to you? Why are you ignoring her? She feels so wronged these past few days—she actually came to complain to me! Tell me what’s going on. Did you realize you still like her, so you’re hiding from her?”
Lin Mo was about to pour her heart out to Lu Ruoruo as usual, but then she remembered that Lu Ruoruo had been the one to welcome her at Xi Shen’s villa. Lu Ruoruo probably knew nothing.
She had no evidence, only a psychological grudge. Explaining everything to Lu Ruoruo now would feel… strange.
So, she said calmly, “Nothing happened. I just don’t want to deal with Xi Shen much anymore. We aren’t the same kind of people. Plus, I’ve troubled her a lot lately. Less communication means fewer troubles.”
Lu Ruoruo obviously didn’t believe her, continuing her chatter:
“But she seems to care a lot. She mentioned it twice to me, even asking me to persuade you. She says if there’s a misunderstanding, she can explain. Are you sure nothing is wrong?”
Lin Mo thought to herself: Running over to ask her now would be stupid. Why would she tell the truth just because I asked? Besides, this involved her personal safety; if Xi Shen admitted to anything, she’d be legally liable.
In short, asking directly was a terrible move.
Lin Mo was actually quite conflicted. If she left Suzhou, she wouldn’t be able to continue investigating this. But if she stayed, she was stuck between a pit of fire and a wolf’s den. Either way, progress was difficult.
She brushed Lu Ruoruo off with a few casual words:
“There’s no need. Even friends drift apart after a certain stage. Just tell her not to overthink it and let nature take its course. Once I leave, there’ll be even less reason to keep in touch… Oh, right, I forgot to tell you: I’m planning to leave Suzhou and work in another city.”
Lu Ruoruo’s scream nearly shattered Lin Mo’s eardrum:
“AAAAAAAAAAHH! Why?! Where are you going?! To do what?! Is Suzhou not good enough?! What will I do if you leave?! Have you decided? When are you leaving? I’m coming over to check on you! Why so sudden…”
Lin Mo patiently listened to the screaming. Once Lu Ruoruo calmed down, she explained:
“I have amnesia, remember? I want to see what’s out there. I don’t remember what the outside world is like. It’s hard to find work staying here. I just decided this, and you’re the only person who knows. Keep it a secret—don’t tell Xi Shen, and definitely don’t tell Xue Luhe!”
“But you could just go travel! Why work? If you need money, I can give it to you! Working is so tiring, and you’ve never worked a day in your life! You could even just invest or something—you’d never be short of cash! Oh, my silly girl!”
“…Ruo Ruo, is this how rich people play? With my IQ—the one that couldn’t even get a university degree—you want me to handle investments? Forget it. Don’t worry too much. Once I settle down there, we can… video chat.”
Lin Mo was careful not to mention the address.
After a long time spent comforting Lu Ruoruo, the other woman finally calmed down enough to insist on a farewell dinner. Lin Mo had no choice but to agree.
“Private! It has to be private! No third party can know!”
Lin Mo emphasized this several times before hanging up.
In the new week, Lin Mo finally received an interview invitation. It was in a very distant northern city called West City.
She was interviewing for a marketing planning position. She passed the first round of video interviews and was now preparing to meet the manager in person. Since it was a small company, she might even have to talk to the top boss.
Excited, Lin Mo began packing. She immediately booked a flight, packed her valuables into a suitcase, and went to cancel her lease.
The landlord was annoyed she had stayed for such a short time and only returned half the deposit. Lin Mo didn’t care.
Her plan was to go to West City, do the interview, and hope for the best. If it didn’t work out, she’d stay in a hotel and keep applying, heading to the next city for the next interview. In any case, she was not returning to Suzhou.
Even in a worst-case scenario where she had to return, she would never live opposite Xue Luhe again. She would find a place where Xue Luhe could never find her.
One day at 4:00 AM, Lin Mo snuck out of her apartment like a thief.
She was fully armed in a heavy coat, scarf, and hat. She peeked around cautiously, then picked up her suitcase to carry it, fearing the wheels would be too loud.
She took the elevator down, got into her pre-booked taxi, and after a long drive, arrived at the airport.
As she got out with her suitcase and looked at the brightly lit terminal, she felt a bit dazed. The journey had been so smooth it was almost hard to believe. She felt as if there might be another shoe waiting to drop.
She took off her coat and scarf, went through security, and sat in the waiting area. Seeing the few surrounding passengers dozing off, she finally felt at ease.
It seemed Xue Luhe had actually kept her word this time; she hadn’t installed cameras in the house or the hallway. This time, she should be able to get away.
A digital clock hung on the airport wall. There were two hours left until her 7:00 AM flight. She leaned back and closed her eyes to rest.
Suddenly, her phone vibrated. Someone was calling.
Lin Mo picked it up, and her hand shook violently!
It was a video call request from Xue Luhe!
Seeing Xue Luhe’s cool, self-portrait avatar jumping on the screen, Lin Mo felt her heart was about to leap out of her throat!
She reached out quickly and slammed the red “End” button!
Before she could think of what to do or what lie to tell, the avatar jumped again. Another video call request!
Lin Mo set the phone aside and stared at it, eyes wide, watching the vibrating icon. She decided to ignore it. She wouldn’t answer! Let’s see how long she could keep calling!
The vast airport hall was empty and quiet. Although Lin Mo had quickly turned on silent mode, a few people still looked over. Seeing her ignore the call and just stare at the phone, an older woman nearby said:
“Little girl, why aren’t you answering? Did you have a fight with your boyfriend and run away in a huff?”
Lin Mo rolled her eyes inwardly and said bluntly:
“Not a boyfriend. It’s a debt collector. I’m going out of town to dodge them.”
The woman peeked at the avatar on the screen and muttered to herself:
“Debt collectors these days sure like using photos of female celebrities…”
Lin Mo didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. She picked the phone back up like a hot potato, holding it in her palm and just staring.
After about five minutes, the video call finally disappeared. The screen went black.
In an instant, Lin Mo felt the air become fresher and the morning sun brighter. She took several deep breaths.
But immediately, the screen lit up again with a stream of messages from Xue Luhe!
Where are you? The guard downstairs said you went out in the middle of the night. Where are you going??? Why aren’t you answering my calls! ANSWER THE PHONE!!! PICK UP!!!
Then came another video call invite. Lin Mo didn’t answer.
For some reason, looking at these words, Lin Mo could imagine Xue Luhe’s distorted, anxious, and frantic face. She actually felt a trace of inexplicable satisfaction.
No, not just a trace… a lot of it.
With that feeling, seeing the messages flying in made Lin Mo want to laugh.
Asking me why I’m not answering? Don’t you have any idea? Who would dare answer a call from the King of Hell!
Lin Mo!!! ANSWER THE PHONE NOW!!!! OBEY ME!!!! Tell me your location, IMMEDIATELY!!!!! Don’t push me. You know what I do when I’m angry. DON’T PUSH ME!!!!!
The more exclamation marks she saw, the better Lin Mo felt.
When she looked up again, the flight had begun boarding. Lin Mo quickly stood up to get in line. Even boarding a second earlier felt like a win.
Hehe, Xue Luhe, bet you didn’t expect this! Every cause has an effect—I am your retribution!
