The Moon Upon My Heart - Chapter 29
Chapter 29: Dazzling
Her heart began to beat violently.
Shen Wangshu moved as scheduled over the weekend. With only one week left before school started, she said she wanted to adapt to the new environment near the school early, and Li Ming naturally agreed.
Over the course of two days, everything was prepared. Early Saturday morning, Zhao Kuanning’s car was already parked downstairs.
Sitting in the back seat, Shen Wangshu watched the familiar street scenes recede bit by bit. There was no sadness about leaving home in her heart; instead, there was a flutter of excitement toward a new life.
She could feel the relaxed atmosphere between her mother and Uncle Zhao in the front. Occasionally, when asked a question, she simply replied with a smile, her thoughts having long since flown to the side of the person waiting for her.
As soon as the car came to a steady halt, a familiar figure rushed out from the building entrance like a large dog waiting for its owner to return. Ji Fengyue hadn’t even waited for a message; she had been keeping watch there with longing eyes.
She ran to the car, her gaze bypassing everyone else to land straight on Shen Wangshu, her eyes incredibly bright.
“Hey, let the adults handle the moving!” Zhao Kuanning had just opened the trunk when Ji Fengyue tried to grab a suitcase first; he quickly spoke up to stop her.
“Exactly, you kids go upstairs and play!” Li Ming chimed in from the side. They wouldn’t let the two girls anywhere near the trunk.
“Xiao Ji, you and Xiaoyue go upstairs to rest. See if there’s anything missing, and we’ll go to the supermarket together later.” Zhao Kuanning took the suitcase. Before Ji Fengyue could argue, another vigorous figure arrived.
Lin Xuxi smiled and put an arm around Ji Fengyue’s shoulder, nudging her toward Shen Wangshu’s side while her tongue was as sweet as honey: “Oh, you’re too polite! The two sisters have a great relationship and will be roommates; it’s only right to help move. It’s no trouble at all. Let’s finish moving quickly, get the house organized, and we can all go out for lunch. By the way, I know a place nearby with great food, later we can…”
Lin Xuxi talked non-stop, giving the two no chance to be polite further, immediately shifting the topic to food.
Shen Wangshu and Ji Fengyue shared a knowing glance. Shen Wangshu smiled slightly and picked up a cardboard box from the back seat. It wasn’t heavy, just some small ornaments and books—but Ji Fengyue took it with extreme care, as if it were a rare treasure.
The two smiled at each other and, while the adults were still “tussling,” tacitly headed into the building first.
They hadn’t brought much this time, and the five of them finished everything in one trip. Afterward, Li Ming refused to let the girls help anymore. She directed Zhao Kuanning to organize the sundries while she swept and dusted. Shen Wangshu and Ji Fengyue were left with no choice but to stay in the study next to the master bedroom.
Li Ming even “chased” Lin Xuxi there as well. In her eyes, no matter how mature the twenty-year-old Lin Xuxi acted, she was still a child and belonged at the same table as her daughter.
Inside the study, Lin Xuxi actually appeared somewhat awkward compared to her behavior in front of the others. She was very self-aware of her “third-wheel” status and didn’t dare disturb Ji Fengyue and Shen Wangshu while they were alone.
“Cough, I think I’ll go out and help with the cleaning. After all, I am technically the landlord. You guys make yourselves at home. Don’t worry, no one will disturb you.” After sitting for barely two minutes, Lin Xuxi found an excuse to slip away. Shen Wangshu couldn’t help but laugh at the sight of her scurrying off.
“Is the psychological shadow I gave her that day really that big? She really is just a child.” In the eyes of the thirty-year-old Shen Wangshu, Lin Xuxi was indeed a child who had been forced by life to become independent early.
Ji Fengyue nodded. “If she hadn’t said she really wasn’t cut out for studying and couldn’t even get through half a page, I would have found a way to get her back to school. Tsk, it’s not like she needs to earn money to support the family this time around anyway.”
“When I started my freshman year, Lin Xuxi was the one who sent me off. She used the excuse that she’d never been to university and just wanted to see what it was like. Before leaving, she secretly stuffed money into my hand… Her situation was very difficult. Her parents were a nightmare, always finding ways to demand money from her, as were her other relatives. She barely contacts them, but she has a decent relationship with my mom. After she found out about my situation, she specifically quit her factory job and rushed back to check on me.”
Shen Wangshu listened quietly as Ji Fengyue spoke of her family matters from their past life. She had once thought Ji Fengyue would never speak of these things in her entire life, but in this life, Ji Fengyue was willing to proactively share them.
“Did you stay in touch frequently after that?”
Ji Fengyue shook her head. “No. At that time, my self-esteem was too high. I felt that since I had a scholarship, I didn’t need anyone’s pity or charity, and I certainly didn’t need Lin Xuxi to scrimp and save to give me living expenses and pocket money.”
“Every single time, she was the one who reached out to me… Regardless, I remember her kindness. It’s just money and a house; it’s nothing. Besides, she’s very hardworking. She helped my mom a lot over the past two years, and she handled the online store entirely by herself this year. She’s doing very well and she deserves all of it.”
“Lin Xuxi’s only flaw is being too easy-going. Her heart is too soft.”
“That’s probably why you value her.” Shen Wangshu smiled. Although she hadn’t heard about Lin Xuxi from Ji Fengyue before, she believed that once Ji Fengyue became independent in her career, she must have repaid this kind cousin. Not to mention in this life, Lin Xuxi’s destiny had been completely altered by Ji Fengyue.
“As long as her ears don’t go soft and she doesn’t end up lending money to those ungrateful wretches again, I’ll be thankful.”
Ji Fengyue instinctively reached to push up her glasses, only to find her hand at her face with no glasses there. She pinched the bridge of her nose uncomfortably. Shen Wangshu asked curiously, “Why aren’t you wearing glasses today? Is there an outdoor activity?”
“I went to the hospital to check my vision a few days ago. The doctor said I only have pseudo-myopia. If I protect my eyes, get enough sleep, and don’t overexert them, it will recover quickly. So I just took the glasses off; it’s more convenient,” Ji Fengyue coughed. “I’m just not quite used to it yet.”
Shen Wangshu looked puzzled, and Ji Fengyue explained: “When I first came back, my vision was normal. But not long after, my vision started to blur, so I got glasses. The prescription was only about 1.00 diopter. Because I was used to wearing glasses in my past life, I never thought about preventing nearsightedness.”
Shen Wangshu tilted her head. “Then why the sudden change in habit?”
“Because of you. You said you hoped I would take good care of my body, so I went for a check-up. Xiaoyue, whatever you say, I will do.”
Being stared at directly by her beloved and hearing such serious words, Shen Wangshu was momentarily stunned. She opened her mouth but found she didn’t know how to respond.
“These past few days, although it’s still hard to fall asleep at night, the time I fall asleep has moved up a lot, and the quality of sleep is improving. Look, the dark circles have faded quite a bit too. Xiaoyue, please don’t be angry, okay? I’m working hard to change.”
Ji Fengyue leaned in close to Shen Wangshu, earnestly pointing at her own eyes. Shen Wangshu instinctively followed her movement, seeing only her own reflection in those beautiful eyes.
In that instant, her heart began to beat violently. Such a close distance, such an ambiguous posture yet this person was completely oblivious, even wanting to lean in closer.
Shen Wangshu unconsciously looked away and replied softly, “I’m not angry. I wouldn’t get angry with you over something like that.”
“Then will you be happy?”
“I’m happy. It’s good that you’re willing to care more about yourself.”
“Mm! I definitely will!” Having received a satisfactory reaction, Ji Fengyue knew when to stop. With a face full of smiles, she led Shen Wangshu to the master bedroom next door to show her the redecorated room.
“Xiaoyue, look at the bedroom first. See if there’s anything you don’t like. Do you like the color of the sheets? What about the curtains? Do you like the bay window and the balcony? We can grow some greenery here. And the wardrobe this half is for your coats, and this side is for mine.”
“Although we don’t have a walk-in closet like before, we’ll stick to the old rule of having half each. Since we’re still high schoolers, it’s enough for now. We can just put some random clothes in the second bedroom’s wardrobe so your mom doesn’t get suspicious if she suddenly drops by.”
Ji Fengyue was still enthusiastically planning their world for two, her voice filled with irrepressible joy. Shen Wangshu leaned against the wardrobe, listening quietly, as that sudden surge of heartbeats finally began to subside.
Sunlight poured in from the balcony, casting warm patches on the floor. The air was filled with the scent of new furniture mixed with sunlight.
Shen Wangshu listened intently, a smile unconsciously spreading across her face. Finally, she asked with a chuckle: “What if she doesn’t tell me in advance and pops in suddenly, only to find we always sleep together and the second bedroom has barely been used? What then?”
“Hmph, I believe you won’t give her that chance. Besides, what’s wrong with two fifteen-year-old girls sleeping together? She couldn’t possibly think anything weird.” Ji Fengyue was bold despite her shaky logic; after all, she wouldn’t do anything inappropriate to Shen Wangshu now. Sleeping together in an embrace wasn’t a big deal; she didn’t care.
“True. I’m the one thinking weird thoughts,” Shen Wangshu laughed in spite of herself. “I like this bedroom very much. The bed is comfortable, too. I should be able to get a good night’s sleep tonight.”
“Mm!”
Ji Fengyue pleasingly squeezed her beloved’s hand. “Xiaoyue, I’ve been sleeping well these past two days. Shouldn’t you give me a little reward?”
Shen Wangshu blinked. “What do you want?”
“How about accompanying me to the mountains to watch the sunrise tomorrow? The weather has been great lately, and all the camping supplies are ready. Lin Xuxi doesn’t have much work lately; spending two days on the mountain with me won’t affect her job… Anyway, everything is prepared. This wasn’t a sudden decision, so don’t worry, there won’t be any accidents!”
“I didn’t refuse you before because I was worried about those things,” Shen Wangshu’s eyes crinkled. “I was just worried about your health. It’s just watching the sunrise—we can go whenever you want.”
“Not just climbing a mountain for the sunrise. Wherever you want to go, I will accompany you.”
Ji Fengyue’s eyes lit up. “That’s a promise, Xiaoyue! I’ll remember it!”
“But you can’t overexert yourself, okay?”
“Okay~” Ji Fengyue was so happy she hugged Shen Wangshu and nuzzled her, her face pressed against Shen Wangshu’s cheek. Shen Wangshu stole a glance, then immediately shifted her gaze toward the balcony behind the bed.
There were lush green treetops there, with sunlight hitting them and reflecting shimmering spots of light. It was beautiful, just like Ji Fengyue’s eyes; they were so dazzling, yet Shen Wangshu closed her eyes, unwilling to look any longer.
She patted Ji Fengyue’s back. “Alright, you love to act spoiled. Let’s go out and help them. The sooner we finish cleaning, the sooner they can head back, and then we can go camping to welcome our new life.”
“Mm!”
Ji Fengyue happily took Shen Wangshu’s hand, and the two walked out of the bedroom. Using the excuse that “sitting around is too boring, might as well clean together,” and with Lin Xuxi chiming in, they successfully convinced Li Ming to let them help.
The five of them quickly cleaned the house until it was spotless. Everything was organized so well that even someone with OCD couldn’t find a flaw.
Seeing both girls working so efficiently, Li Ming was internally very satisfied, even if she didn’t say much. So when Ji Fengyue suggested going camping with Lin Xuxi in a couple of days, she didn’t say anything discouraging for the first time. She only told them to stay safe and keep in touch.
Lin Xuxi patted her chest and guaranteed she would bring the two sisters back in one piece without any accidents.
Mindful of their camping trip, Li Ming suggested going to the supermarket after lunch to buy plenty of good food and drinks.
They returned with a trunk full of snacks and fruit. After seeing Li Ming and Zhao Kuanning off, the three packed their things and drove toward the outskirts.
Ji Fengyue turned her head, meeting Shen Wangshu’s smiling eyes. The sunrise she had anticipated for so long and planned for many years was finally something she could watch together with her beloved.
