- Chapter 5 - The Inverted Prison Tower (Part 5) [Rewrite] — "You Are Also..."
Inside the Temple, the blood-water and feather-arrows froze in the air the moment Fu Bai appeared.
Lin’s ice-white eyes fell upon Fu Bai’s bowed back before shifting back to Lin Yang’s blood-stained face. He stared into Lin Yang’s pitch-black eyes and uttered, “Take him and get out.”
The command was directed at Fu Bai.
Lin Yang opened his mouth to speak, but before he could make a sound, Fu Bai grabbed his sleeve and gave a subtle shake of his head.
He led Lin Yang out of the Temple. The massive doors slammed shut, and they stepped onto the suspended black silt. Like a descending elevator, the mire dropped them back down to the earth.
The moment Fu Bai’s feet touched the ground, he violently spat out a large mouthful of fresh blood.
The monsters and humans stationed on the ground had not left. Qi Xun’s expression was tight with worry. “Grand Liturgist!”
“It is nothing. This is merely the price I must pay.” Fu Bai wiped the crimson stains from his lips. His face was ghostly pale as he bowed toward Zhuo. “King, the matter of the Evil God is troublesome. I must deliberate further with the Envoy from another world to find a solution. Until then, I ask that you issue an order: whether Yin Jiao or human, no one is to harm the Envoy privately.”
Otherwise, those who died would be the few remaining humans and Yin Jiao.
With Fu Bai validating Lin Yang’s identity, Zhuo at least stopped making things difficult for him on the surface. He nodded, granting Fu Bai’s request. Naturally, Lin Yang no longer had to enter the White Tower.
Zhuo looked up at the Prison Tower. It hung in the sky like an unceasing nightmare, weighing heavily upon the hearts of every living creature.
Zhuo spoke in a low, heavy voice, “The sky is growing dark. Everyone, return to your Giant Rocks. Under no circumstances are you to step outside. Protect the females and the children; they are our hope for continuation.”
“May we be safe tonight.”
“May the sun rise tomorrow morning, and may we see the dawn.”
The Yin Jiao began to cry out in response. The humans, in their merman forms, stood together with clenched fists. Some among them joined the Yin Jiao, their voices hoarse and unpleasant as they repeated: “May we be safe tonight. May the sun rise tomorrow morning, and may we see the dawn.”
Regardless of whether they were monsters or humans, their only plea was to survive.
Lin Yang stood in the twilight. The screams of Lin Lin’s agony from the night before seemed to echo alongside the chants currently ringing in his ears. He thought back to his own world from hundreds of years ago.
Monsters had invaded; humans had fled the disaster.
He had thought the worst possible outcome was for humanity to lose its home—forced to coexist with monsters and become their nourishment. He realized now it could be even worse. Here, even living was a luxury one shouldn’t dare to dream of.
The true source of all evil, the one who truly deserved to die… had only ever been that one being!
The Yin Jiao and humans departed for their respective homes. Fu Bai escorted Lin Yang back to Lin Lin, which would be Lin Yang’s residence for the foreseeable future.
“Giant Rock Monsters cannot move. They die where they were born,” Fu Bai sighed. “Before this tribulation began, it was rare for a Giant Rock Monster to die. Now, there are fewer than a thousand survivors left.”
Lin Yang walked beside Fu Bai, his feet sinking unevenly into the silt. “Is the light in this world always so dim?”
Even at high noon, the light felt like early morning.
“The sun is blocked by a layer of ice. We are fortunate that any light reaches us at all; otherwise, in a perpetual night, humanity would have perished long ago.”
“Are you also a human?”
Hearing this, Fu Bai’s voice dropped. “I have lived for several hundred years. No human lifespan reaches such a length. Perhaps I was once a human, but I gradually lost that identity. Now, I am merely an immortal monster.”
A faint, wry smile touched Fu Bai’s lips. “Though, perhaps this monster of mine will soon meet a violent end.”
Lin Yang stared at the silt clinging to his boots, his dark eyes clear and shallow. “Whether one is a person or a monster depends entirely on the heart.”
Fu Bai was slightly stunned. He let out a soft laugh but did not continue the topic. “You have seen the Evil God. No matter how powerful you are, He cannot be killed. Do you really think this world can still be saved?”
Lin Yang remained silent.
They had reached Lin Lin.
Fu Bai’s expression turned dazed. “Actually, sometimes I think it would be fine if the humans and Yin Jiao died together. None of them are innocent.”
Fu Bai’s head began to ache, and he twitched the corner of his mouth. “What madness am I speaking… just pretend you didn’t hear it. Lin Yang, I know you aren’t from this world. Everything happening here has nothing to do with you. If you have a way to leave, you should do so as soon as possible. There is no need to waste away here like us.”
“There is a way,” Lin Yang spoke.
Fu Bai: “What?”
Lin Yang stood at the boundary between light and shadow. “I have a way to stop all of this. This world can still be saved as long as I can make the Evil God fall in love with me.”
Fu Bai froze for several seconds. When he realized what Lin Yang was saying, he couldn’t help but burst into laughter. “Hahaha! Are you even more insane than I am? You want to demand love from the Evil God? That is more of a fairy tale than seeking love from a heartless monster.”
Lin Yang’s expression was dead serious. “I can do it. This is the only way to save the world. If God loves the people, He will not harm them.”
