The Male Zerg Cub Doesn’t Want to Be the Cannon Fodder Top - Chapter 14
Iliya paused and looked at the cub’s stubborn gaze, letting out a soft sigh.
“You will not be satisfied with just being looked after by the rebel army, will you? You want to save His Highness, but that is no easy task. As a male cub, regardless of your complicated background, you have the opportunity to receive better treatment instead of being dragged into this mire. Have you truly thought this through?”
“Pursuing the truth is my vocation. And pursuing him,” Maurice paused. It was the system mission that had initially guided his interest toward Eliotte, but beyond that mission, he had already come to know the female. That had nothing to do with the system; it was his own heart. “Is the purpose of my life.”
“Fine. I will tell you everything I know,” Iliya said in a low voice.
“Half a year ago, the rebel army gathered its forces, stormed the Holy See, and occupied the Heaven Palace planet. Afterward, the Empire dispatched the First, Third, and Fourth Legions to suppress them.”
“At the start of the war, only the Fourth Legion, led by Admiral Edwin, fought the rebels because the Empire determined that Edwin had betrayed the Empire and the Royal Family. The goal of the First and Third Legions was to watch the rebels and the Fourth Legion fight like the snipe and the clam, waiting for heavy losses so they could swoop in and slaughter the survivors.”
Though Iliya’s voice was gentle, the cruelty of war made Maurice clench his small fists. Coming from a peaceful world, he could not imagine the grandeur of interstellar warfare, but he felt Eliotte’s plight as if it were his own.
“The First Legion, led by Eliotte, refused to execute that order. He wanted to protect his compatriots and did not want to massacre them, right?”
“Perhaps. We do not know the specifics of his situation,” the blonde sub-female said softly, a trace of pity in his eyes.
“After the Fourth Legion moved out of range of the Third and First Legions, they immediately defected and stopped attacking the rebels. However, the Third Legion launched a suicide attack on the rebel army. In that battle, the rebels suffered countless casualties and the Third Legion was completely wiped out. The First Legion never deployed its troops; they only retreated after the Third Legion failed.”
Iliya slowly furrowed his brow.
“This is common knowledge, but there are two pieces of inside information within the rebel army. First, the Imperial Royal Research Institute exploded six months ago. The perpetrator exposed the institute’s horrific experiments on the network. One project involved large-scale brain control of females and sub-females, turning military females into machine-like walking corpses that only follow orders. This explains why the Third Legion had no tactics when attacking the rebels and only used suicide charges.”
“Second, the Empire spent a century dismantling the military females’ control over the Legions because that was the last pure land for females and sub-females unpolluted by males. The battlefield and victory belonged to the military females. So, while the Legions nominally belong to their Admirals, they are actually owned by male commanders. On the battlefield, the Third Legion’s male commander was a Prince from the Royal Family; he was shot dead on the spot by my brother. The commander of the First Legion was a male named Lawrence. We are not sure whether the decisions in the First Legion were made by His Highness or Lawrence.”
A fierce fire erupted in the cub’s deep green eyes. He grit his teeth and said word by word:
“So, the military females of the First and Third Legions might have already been controlled, becoming puppets? And Eliotte, he did something to make the brain-controlled females of the First Legion leave the battlefield, preventing them from unknowingly slaughtering their own compatriots.”
“And the Empire hid the male culprit, making Eliotte bear the responsibility and infamy of the war alone? Good. Very good. Truly wonderful.”
The university student had never been so angry. His brain was buzzing as new information converged, forming countless possible logical chains. Every possibility made him feel as if he were falling into an ice cellar while simultaneously being roasted by poisonous flames.
“The Empire has deleted all evidence from the laboratories and suppressed the spread of information. Therefore, we have no proof.”
Iliya wanted to urge the cub to stay calm, but he happened to strike the ambition of the journalism student. Maurice raised his chubby face, flames burning in his eyes.
“I will find the evidence and restore the truth. I will never let him walk that Path of Shame. I will bring him back.”
Maurice knew his words were impulsive, but he did not regret them. Fighting spirit and drive dispelled the lethargy he felt upon learning that Eliotte had actively left him. In an instant, he had found his motivation again.
“Thank you, Iliya. I hope you keep your team members in check. I do not want to hear any more words slandering Eliotte; he still saved your lives. This is Count Schmidt’s hunting ground. The Count does not like hunting, and the hunting ground’s Skynet is out of repair; this is a blind spot. You can stay as long as you want, provided you do not expose my identity. This is for your own good as well.”
After speaking, the cub turned to walk into the dense forest. Iliya frowned anxiously.
“Your Excellency, you are still a cub. It is truly unsafe to be alone.”
“But he is in more danger than I am.”
The cub turned his head slightly.
“He is surrounded by a group of controlled military females who are like the walking dead. He bears the misunderstanding and infamy of the entire race, and he does not even have anyone to talk to. And do you know what the worst part is?”
The cub paused, his voice trembling.
“He said that was his fate and he accepted it. Well, I do not accept it.”
Before his voice had even faded, the cub’s round body nimbly disappeared into the dense forest. As an adult sub-female, Iliya was actually unable to capture his figure and could only stop helplessly.
“System! This is too unfair! How could they do this to Eliotte! Is he not the protagonist? Is he actually the protagonist of a tragedy? Waaa.”
Traveling through the dense forest with no one watching, the cub’s tears finally sprayed out freely. The university student was like a wild monkey, his unrestrained posture unable to hide his massive psychological trauma.
Eliotte had left right in front of him. He had not had time to do anything. For the first time, the vibrant and optimistic university student felt an earth-shattering sense of powerlessness. He felt small, helpless, and lost, as if his heart were being torn into pieces.
In front of others, he had endured, pretending to calmly handle Eliotte’s unfinished business. He had helped those rebels even though his soul had long since flown toward Eliotte. Putting on a sharp protective shell was the only way he could resist the pain of Eliotte’s departure.
“Why did he not tell me? He knew I was investigating all this! Why did he have to go and accept his death? Does he have a self-destructive tendency? Oh my god, oh my god, I did not take good care of him. I even took him to the dangerous Lower City. I am so terrible!”
The short, chubby cub beat his chest and stomped his feet in the forest, then sobbed while using his male power to move forward. Before long, the outline of the hunting estate emerged before him.
A few minutes later, the cub stood outside the most magnificent bedroom of the estate and knocked on the vintage door.
“Adam, open the door! Your brother is here!”
