The Male Zerg Cub Doesn’t Want to Be the Cannon Fodder Top - Chapter 12
When Eliotte’s silhouette was swept into that brilliant golden light and vanished into the sky, Maurice’s mind went blank from the sheer shock.
In the distance, the roar of artillery shook the massive underground city, creating a bizarre scene as if the heavens themselves were collapsing. Maurice’s eyes reflected the chaotic flashes of particle cannons, yet he could see only Eliotte’s face, filled with a touch of apology and tenderness.
The four head tall, round cub instinctively moved his short, stubby legs, chasing the light reflected from Eliotte’s wings. But before he could get far, his radish like legs were tripped up. He tumbled clumsily to the ground, nearly crushed into a pancake by the crowds fleeing in panic. Sand got into his beautiful green eyes, and late coming tears began to roll down as uncontrollable whimpers escaped his throat.
This was not right.
How could the female insect he rescued be Eliotte? How could a prince be more wretched than a person like him with no legal identity? And those insects who caught him, what were they going to do to him? How could Eliotte allow those insects to treat him like that?
The cub was covered in pain from the fall, but he did not notice it at all. He was, after all, a male insect who had taken up the mantle halfway through life. Only now did he belatedly remember his mental tentacles. Suddenly, the dark space behind the cub began to roar, as if a chaotic giant beast were about to tear through space and descend upon the world. Yet, the cub only stared fixedly at the fire in the sky.
He could not care about anything else. Missions, identities, plans, none of it came to mind. The stubborn side of Maurice’s soul emerged. His heart held only the female insect. Whether he was Eliotte or anyone else did not matter, Maurice only wanted to protect him.
For the first time since transmigrating, the optimistic and proactive college student felt a surge of hatred toward his own excessively weak body. He hated that he could not spread wings and fly like a female, and he hated that he had no combat awareness. Aside from catching food or scaring Adam, he had failed to tap into the combat potential of his mental tentacles. He was left like a trapped beast bound to the ground, gazing up at the battlefield shrouded in light beams.
Maurice mobilized all his power, attempting to summon mental tentacles to shroud the entire area. Sharp pains shot through his head. His frail cub body could not support the control of so much power. The thick scent of blood trickled from his nose and the corners of his mouth. His eyes burned with stinging pain, but he did not stop.
The male’s mental power spread rapidly. Several Law Enforcement aircraft were hit by signal interference and crashed into the vines of the Snake Entwined Trees. Maurice’s nose was filled with the smell of blood. Just as the space behind him began to warp and a massive number of mental tentacles prepared to tear the fabric of reality, a hand grabbed the corner of his dusty robe.
“Oh no, Prince Eliotte did not tell me you were a male cub!”
The moment he heard Eliotte’s name, Maurice paused. He looked up at the sub female approaching him, his eyes catching the black pattern on the corner of the other’s robe. When Eliotte said goodbye, he told Maurice to follow a sub female with black vine patterns on his robe to leave and to present Eliotte’s mecha to verify his identity in exchange for protection.
In that brief moment of distraction, the sub female crouched down and whispered, “Prince Eliotte will not die! He is safe until those insects achieve their goal. You cannot save him like this, you would only be throwing away the opportunity he fought to give us.”
The sub female’s words rang like a warning bell in the cub’s ear, making Maurice feel a wave of dizziness. His green eyes were bloodshot and wet as he stared at the blurred face of the sub female.
“What else can I do?”
The light in the sky was unreachable. The aircraft and the wings of the females kicked up gusts of wind. For the first time, the cub felt so small, and that smallness felt like a ridiculous sin. He could not protect the female.
The cub stared intensely at the light in the heavens, his eyes stinging until tears flowed uncontrollably, making his dusty little face look as pitiful as a puppy abandoned by its master. Seeing the space wall behind the cub settle down, the sub female with dazzling blonde hair cautiously approached him.
“Come with us. I will take you to a safe place to plan our next move. Forgive me for the offense, Your Lordship.”
The blonde sub female quickly picked up the cub and fled into the darkness. While the sub female’s constitution was not equal to that of a military female, he was experienced and soon blended into the intricate dark alleys of the black market. With the help of others, they escaped the surveillance of the Law Enforcement and the First Army.
But the sub female did not stop, nor did the shadowy rebels behind him. They all knew the Empire had zero tolerance for the Rebel Army. Once Eliotte was captured, the Law Enforcement would surely turn the entire black market upside down. There was no telling how many insects would be implicated.
Suddenly, the cub, who had been silent in the sub female’s arms the whole way, spoke up.
“I know a safe place where the Law Enforcement will not dare to search. Follow me.”
The cub suddenly jumped down from the sub female’s arms. As he landed with a thud, several rebel insects reached out to steady him, but the round looking cub landed firmly. He did not spare the rebels a glance, instead running off in a specific direction.
Behind Maurice, countless insects cast confused glances at their leader, the blonde sub female. Their doubts were obvious. The blonde sub female bit his lip and whispered, “The organization’s mission is not a total failure yet. The captives might reveal the jump point to leave the planet. It is worth the risk to stay on the planet temporarily.”
“But Eliotte is not a member of the organization! His entrustment might not be trustworthy!”
A rebel member questioned him in a deep voice. Maurice paused in his tracks. He turned his head halfway, his eyes under the hood half lit and half dark, flickering with a forest like grimness.
“He is the one who saved you,” the cub said in the darkness, his voice having lost its warmth and turned hoarse. “I do not want his sacrifice to be in vain.”
Having said that, Maurice vanished into the darkness without another word. His mind was in a mess, and he had no heart to manage the rebels behind him. The sad, gentle face Eliotte showed before disappearing into the sky flashed frequently before his eyes, making the path ahead seem rugged and difficult. Yet he gritted his teeth and moved his aching little body, leading the way for the rebel survivors.
He did not fully trust these rebels, especially after they questioned Eliotte’s help. However, he also knew this was Eliotte’s choice, and he did not want Eliotte’s efforts to fail at the last step. Maurice was very familiar with several space jump points in the black market. He led the core members of the rebels through a jump point into the Upper District, then used the Schmidt family’s private jump point to enter the hunting grounds.
After evading the Skynet above the manor, Maurice led the sub female and the others into the small hunting lodge. This was an area where the hunting ground surveillance network was damaged. The Imperial Law Enforcement would not search a Count’s territory, nor would they dare to overstep their authority to check the Count’s family space jump records. As long as the managers of the Schmidt family did not find out, the rebels were safe for the time being.
The small space of the hunting lodge, consisting of only two rooms, could not possibly accommodate over a dozen core rebel members. However, the usually enthusiastic and spirited male cub was unexpectedly negligent in arranging things. His mind was still full of noisy sounds, one moment it was Eliotte’s gentle goodbye, the next it was his previous low voiced confession, “Eliotte has indeed brought shame to the Empire.”
Those trivial details from the past few days were still fresh in his ears. The cub’s chubby fingers, stained with blood, suddenly tightened around the space button containing the pure white mecha Eliotte had given him. His breathing quickened for a moment. He used his space ring to pack away the blankets and utensils Eliotte had used, then walked up to the blonde sub female who was giving orders to his subordinates.
“I need an agreement.”
The four head tall male cub looked up, only a pair of green eyes visible under the hood. Those eyes were usually filled with endless curiosity and clear passion, but now, the cluttered emotions had settled, leaving only a deep firmness and calm. He did not show the pure white mecha to the blonde sub female to trade for a chance to leave the Empire as Eliotte had instructed.
“My identity must be kept secret. In exchange, I am willing to do my best to assist you in completing the organization’s mission and leaving the planet safely.”
All eyes fell on the cub, whose features were hidden by the hood. Amidst the grateful looks, there was no lack of inquiry and scrutiny.
“Of course. We will not betray our own kind,” the blonde sub female said solemnly.
Another coarse voice suddenly interrupted him, it was the same voice that had questioned Eliotte earlier. “Kind? He is an Imperial male Eliotte asked you to look after. What kind of compatriot is he? He is on the same side as those damned males. Only the lowly females of the Empire would kiss their feet!”
“Shut up! Burkett, do not forget that a female and a male of the Empire just saved your life! Before the revolution began, you were also one of those lowly females you speak of. What right do you have to belittle them?”
The usually mild mannered blonde sub female suddenly erupted. Compared to the other tall and powerful rebel members, the blonde sub female had a lower physical grade, exquisite looks, and measured behavior. As a journalist, Maurice paid extreme attention to detail. It was not hard for him to see that this blonde sub female possessed the same traits as Eliotte, an elegance trained by nobility.
“That is different!” The crew cut female’s face flushed red from the sub female’s accusation. He craned his neck and shouted, “Eliotte is a lackey of Emperor Kelaien! He fights for the Empire, he is our enemy! All males are our enemies! How many brothers have we lost fighting against their rule? Yet the lowly females of the Empire still hunt us down for their masters! How can those owned females be the same as us? They have become dogs marked by males with no self respect or loyalty! Have you forgotten why we are revolting? You actually want to shake hands and make peace with our enemy?”
The crew cut female spoke with increasing fervor, becoming more convinced of his “truth” through his vicious words. He looked at the blonde sub female with contempt, scanning the other’s still graceful figure despite the flight, and sneered.
“It is no surprise you would collude with the enemy. Your female father was a lackey to the males, you are nothing more than a male plaything they raised. If it were not for your male brother being favored by the Mother Goddess, how would you, with your low constitution, have become a special mission captain in the Dawn Organization? Your origin was filthy to begin with!”
The blonde sub female suddenly clenched his fists. His lake green eyes burned with fury, but he knew he could not lose his composure. All his subordinates were watching this provocation, and Burkett’s extreme anti male rhetoric had no small number of supporters. There had always been many extreme anti male advocates in the organization. They viewed all males, and even females or sub females associated with them, as evil. They pursued violent talionic revenge, cruelly burning the insects of the Empire to death, completely forgetting that they were also members of the insect race just a year ago. They forgot that those lowly females who were supposedly obsessed with kneeling to males and had no dignity were also their own kind.
“Are you finished?”
Before the blonde sub female could speak, the male cub, who had been silently observing them, suddenly spoke up. His crisp voice carried a hint of mockery.
“So, the rebels Eliotte risked his life to save are just a bunch of people with great ambitions but little talent. Do you think your so-called mission still needs to be kept a secret?”
