- Chapter 17 - You Have Immunity in My Presence
Once the Death Soldier cried, Wei Zheng’s heart softened first. He released him and stepped back two paces, saying helplessly, “Alright, alright, I’ll stop teasing you.”
The Death Soldier had already dried his tears, but his moist eyes, resembling peach blossoms drenched in dew, were incredibly endearing.
Perhaps feeling ashamed, the Death Soldier pursed his lips tightly and turned his head away, unwilling to meet his gaze.
Wei Zheng felt an itch in his heart, but he knew that overdoing it would be counterproductive, so he ultimately refrained from doing anything more to Wei San.
Rarely lowering his pride, he coaxed in a low, humble voice, “It was my recklessness today; it was my fault. You can have me do anything you wish, just don’t be angry anymore, alright?”
Wei San straightened his disheveled collar, not even wanting to spare him a glance.
“Get out.”
Not only did Wei San reject his hypocritical apology, but he also coldly issued an order for him to leave.
The secret guard didn’t take offense at being rebuffed; he just smiled rakishly. “Fine, fine, how could I dare not leave when my darling tells me to?”
Wei San was startled; he hadn’t expected the secret guard to be so obedient. He instinctively sensed a trap, but to his surprise, the guard truly did as he said.
Wei Zheng jumped out the window just as he had arrived, though he turned back before leaving to add, “When I come again next time, I will properly make amends with you, my darling.”
Wei San gritted his back teeth and slammed the window shut, locking it tight.
As the secret guard departed, the silent farce came to an end. The candles in the room continued to flicker, and apart from Wei San’s faint, labored breathing, it was so quiet that one could hear a pin drop.
He clenched his collar, his fingertips trembling uncontrollably.
Even though the secret guard had gone far away and would likely not appear again tonight, the overwhelming, stifling sense of fear he had brought remained, long refusing to dissipate.
Having just broken down and cried, Wei San’s eye sockets were still sore and swollen.
He thought with lingering fear, Fortunately… fortunately, the master has been on medication for several days, and his energy and sharpness are not what they used to be; otherwise, all the filth that has happened tonight and in the past would likely have been impossible to hide.
He leaned his back against the wall, slowly sliding down to the floor, covering his face with his hands and letting out a long sigh, feeling utterly exhausted in body and spirit.
He spent a little while regulating his emotions, and just as he had calmed down slightly, he saw the candles in the inner room light up.
There was only one person in the inner room Prince Xian, who should have been asleep.
Wei San’s pupils trembled, his mind going blank. The worst-case scenario had happened. He was unwilling to believe reality, but the keen hearing of a martial artist forced him to hear the sound of clothing rubbing against skin as the person walked. The feather-light footsteps became a death knell.
Countless thoughts flashed through his mind, every one of them making him panic and lose his composure.
Before the door leading from the side room to the inner room was pushed open, Wei San instinctively stood up quickly, his waist held straight and rigid. He kept his eyes slightly lowered, staring at the floor. He looked calm on the surface, but in reality, his focus was drifting chaotically.
When Wei Zheng pushed the door open and entered, the first thing he saw was Wei San’s guilty, “covering up” appearance—looking just like a cat that had been caught red-handed by its owner, feeling guilty yet not daring to make a sound.
He pressed his fist to his lips and coughed lightly to suppress his uncontrollable laughter, causing the guilty Death Soldier to quiver imperceptibly.
It was clear how terrified he was of his own master discovering his illicit connection with the secret guard.
Wei Zheng found it endearing and thought the Death Soldier’s reaction was incredibly interesting.
Pretending to have just woken up and having no idea what had transpired, he asked the Death Soldier, sounding puzzled and bewildered, “The night is already deep; why are you not yet asleep?”
The Death Soldier’s face drained of color in an instant, his fingertips trembling, though he feigned composure and said, “It is merely that this subordinate was contemplating matters, and thus suffered from insomnia.”
Fearing that Wei Zheng would probe further, he did not give him the chance to ask, instead changing the subject directly.
“Did this subordinate disturb the master?”
The Death Soldier’s tense voice held a hint of subtle pleading. Wei Zheng understood that he had already been frightened enough tonight, so he followed his lead and replied, “It has nothing to do with you. I just keep falling into nightmares during the night and haven’t been sleeping soundly. Since I have already slept enough during the day, I decided to get up and get some fresh air.”
Wei San felt a lump in his throat. He didn’t feel relieved; on the contrary, he neurotically suspected that his master might have already heard something.
He probed, “Is it truly not this subordinate who disturbed the master?”
Wei Zheng replied amusedly, “I already told you it has nothing to do with you; why are you so eager to seek punishment?”
How could he not know what Wei San was thinking? He was just deliberately making him nervous. After he explained himself, the Death Soldier would inevitably fall into self-reproach for having doubted him; if he were to make any demands later, the Death Soldier would certainly not refuse immediately.
“That is good, this subordinate thought…” Wei San finally breathed a sigh of relief, but halfway through, he realized he had almost let something slip and autonomously closed his mouth.
Wei Zheng looked calm and detached, pretending not to have noticed anything unusual. He stared at the Death Soldier’s nose and eye sockets, which were still slightly red, and smiled significantly. “Tonight is the fifteenth, the full moon. I imagine the moonlight should be quite beautiful. Since you have no desire to sleep, why not accompany this Prince out for some air?”
After saying this, he strode toward the outer room. He didn’t wait for Wei San’s agreement because he was certain that Wei San would follow.
Wei San was stunned for a moment. Seeing that his figure had already crossed through the threshold of the side room, he hurried to recover his senses, grabbed an outer robe to throw over his shoulders, and followed quickly.
There were no people in the Prince’s manor at night; the maids and servants rested after nightfall. The patrolling guards would not come into the side hall, and the secret Death Soldiers and guards in the shadows would not be so tactless as to disturb the Prince’s mood. In the entire courtyard of the side hall, there were only the two of them.
The moonlight tonight was particularly bright, making it possible to see the path ahead without lighting a lamp. The moonlight stretched their shadows long, one behind the other, overlapping.
Wei San trod on the pebbles of the small path, following closely behind Wei Zheng, his spirit highly tense as he caught every movement in his surroundings.
Even knowing that there were Death Soldiers and guards watching in the dark, his instinctive reaction was to prioritize the safety of his master.
Wei Zheng felt that the Death Soldier was perhaps too nervous, but deep down, he felt very satisfied.
Ever since his mother’s death, no one besides Wei San had worried about him so much.
He both loved and hated Wei San’s stubbornness. He loved that he always put him first in everything, and he hated that he was too rigid and devoid of romance. And he himself seemed to be possessed, clearly pining for the other’s looks and body, yet the moment he went too far, the Death Soldier would act as if he had been bullied to the ends of the earth, forcing him to soften his heart and back down, not daring to truly force him.
Wei Zheng could not help but flatter himself; it turned out that he was, after all, a gentleman who cherished the fair and tender.
Under the Chinese parasol tree in the courtyard stood a stone table and chairs. The two arrived there, stopped, and sat down. Wei San wanted to stand behind Wei Zheng, but he was pulled by his wrist and pressed into the seat beside him without question.
Wei San sat on pins and needles. He didn’t know if it was his imagination, but he constantly felt as though he had been stripped of his clothes, standing completely exposed before his master.
“There is one matter I do not quite understand; I wonder if you would be willing to answer it for me?”
Wei Zheng tilted his body, one hand propping up his chin, his gaze sweeping over Wei San’s face intentionally or otherwise. His demeanor was lazy and relaxed, as if the question he had just asked was merely to find a topic of conversation, mentioned casually.
Wei San did not know that this was a trap waiting for him to jump into. He said respectfully, “This subordinate will naturally speak of everything I know.”
Wei Zheng slowly raised his eyebrows; this was exactly what he was waiting for. He asked with composure, “Tonight, why have you been avoiding me at every turn? Is it because I have been too harsh with you usually, causing you to feel fear?”
After what had happened earlier, Wei Zheng had determined one thing: Wei San was a ferocious, hissing cat to everyone else, and only when facing him, his owner, was he obedient and docile. Rather than going through twists and turns and wasting so much effort, it was better to be direct and get the answer he wanted as his master.
As expected, the Death Soldier struggled in a dilemma for a long while before honestly saying what he thought.
He said, “The master is approachable and compassionate to his subordinates, but this subordinate privately believes that rules are rules. This subordinate cannot act like an evil servant who offends his superiors just because the master has a good temper.”
“So… you must maintain a distance from me?”
Wei Zheng never expected the reason to be so simple; it was not as complex as he had imagined.
He couldn’t help but feel it was funny and couldn’t help but remind Wei San, “But you must know, in the public eye, you are now my ‘Young Master Suiyun’. If you are not close to me, wouldn’t that make it very easy to be exposed?”
“But tonight is in private; there are no outsiders watching. The master is the master, and this subordinate absolutely cannot overstep the rules.”
Wei San retorted in a low voice, clearly not feeling that he was in the wrong.
Wei Zheng was both annoyed and amused, but upon reflection, he thought it was normal for Wei San to hold such a view. He was too insecure, viewing himself as lowly as an ant, and his life’s belief was to live for him his master not for himself. Changing such thoughts in a Death Soldier was not something that could be done in a single day.
He sighed, not correcting Wei San’s way of thinking, but he did not do nothing. Instead, he told Wei San with a very firm tone, “Rules are also made by people. If I want to change them, it takes only one word from me. And you have immunity in my presence. You may set your mind at ease and do whatever you wish; you do not need to have so many concerns.”
He was still very willing to spoil a beautiful and obedient male pet.
Wei Zheng had practically told him plainly that he could be indulgent at will, and it would be best if he were a little more delicate and pretentious, occasionally acting with a bit of temperament to add interest. He originally thought he would be greeted by the Death Soldier’s moved gratitude, after which he could take the opportunity to taste some sweetness, but unexpectedly, Wei San misunderstood his meaning.
He saw that after listening, Wei San became even more determined in his view, and with a respectful bow, he said, “The master is so kind and benevolent; this subordinate should strictly fulfill his duties even more, so as not to betray the master’s trust.”
Wei Zheng was so angry that he gritted his teeth, but he couldn’t get angry at him and could only suppress his breath and endure it.
The Death Soldier was as unromantic as ever, making Wei Zheng feel that even the moonlight had lost its appeal.
He curled his lip and said, “I am tired; let us return.”
He hid the frustration in his heart very well. Wei San did not notice it at all, and upon hearing this, he simply stood up obediently and became the tail following behind Wei Zheng again.
Upon returning to the room, Wei San subconsciously wanted to return to the side room to sleep, but he was grabbed by Wei Zheng’s long arm, pulled by the shoulder, and taken into the inner room.
Wei San looked at the door latch being locked and was filled with bewilderment.
So… if the master wants to sleep, why did he drag him into the inner room?
