The Love-Hate and Grudges Between Me and the Mermaid - Chapter 15
Chapter 15
Another explosion has occurred somewhere.
Bu Yan opened her phone, her heart filled with a myriad of emotions.
Is this the precursor to the apocalypse?
She attempted to search her memory for other details of this novel, but aside from the title and the timing of the end times, she found nothing.
Her brain felt as if it were shielded by something, unable to receive any information.
Searching through the original owner’s memories yielded no clues either.
The Xenogeneic God.
She thought of Him again.
The compassionate expression, the haughty posture, the complex and cumbersome hem of the skirt, the slender fish tail beneath it, and above the tail His back.
Coiled with all sorts of things she couldn’t name.
“Xenogeneic God…”
Bu Yan silently chanted His name, uttering the phrase people often said: “Grant me eternal life.”
At the same moment, in the innermost room on the second floor of the small western-style building directly above the basement, Yi An had just finished burning incense for the Xenogeneic God. As she was about to walk out, a sudden piercing pain struck her heart.
In an instant, her legs went weak, and she collapsed to the ground.
Accompanied by a clap of thunder, the statue of the Xenogeneic God fell to the floor without warning.
An unknown amount of time passed before Yi An finally managed to recover from that throbbing pain. She looked up, meeting the cold, detached eyes of the Xenogeneic God.
Her expression froze, her consciousness drifting for a few seconds. A figure suddenly surfaced in her mind, but it quickly dissipated.
Yi An shook her head; her intention was to remember that person, but a familiar murmur caught her train of thought.
As if desperate to confirm it, she hurried to press her face and ear tightly against the floor, holding her breath to continue listening.
“Grant… me… e-ter-nal… life…”
Yi An’s lips moved slightly. Following the voice from beneath the floor, she clasped her hands together with full devotion and said word for word: “Xenogeneic God, grant me eternal life.”
Bu Yan believes in the Xenogeneic God!
Upon learning this news, Yi An leaped three feet high. Grabbing the Xenogeneic God statue, she ran toward the basement, shouting as she went: “Sister, wait a moment!”
“It only works if you say it to the Xenogeneic God!”
The Blue Ship Base was adjacent to the sea. The reason it was called “Blue Ship” was not because it was a blue ship, but because of its appearance.
Previously, Lin Ling also thought it was just a ship, until she boarded the helicopter and looked down from a high altitude to find it wasn’t.
It was a building with an appearance similar to a ship.
Built on man-made land.
Constructed in the shape of a ship to blend in with the surrounding vessels and to conceal its true purpose.
Moreover, compared to the other ships here, the luxurious exterior of the Blue Ship was hardly worth mentioning.
Lin Ling had worked here for nearly ten years, engaged in xenogeneic research for eight. Here, she had seen many “Xenogeneics” , some finished products, some semi-finished but the vast majority failed the experiments and were destroyed.
Creatures that cannot be used by the Empire must be destroyed.
Human interests are paramount.
She vaguely remembered that the first creature she successfully modified and smoothly passed through preliminary testing was a small rabbit with extraordinary healing abilities, numbered RC009.
It was also the first xenogeneic she sent to the Xenogeneic Research Base.
Furthermore it was said that after undergoing extensive experimentation, RC009 had successfully leveled up and become RA003.
This indicated it was a xenogeneic capable of making an incomparable contribution to the Empire in the future.
Lin Ling was proud of RA003, and proud of her career.
She once thought she would work at the Blue Ship Base for a lifetime, dedicating her life to the Empire’s great xenogeneic cause, but she never expected the Blue Ship Base to be discovered and destroyed.
Thinking of this made Lin Ling very melancholy. Logically, anyone who participated in xenogeneic experiments could not leave the base except in emergencies.
And even if they were to leave, they would be escorted by specialized personnel and vehicles. But why was she different?
Why was it Carla and Yoshitani Kaede? Why was she being taken away in secret?
Lin Ling opened her mouth, attempting to ask.
Carla seemed to sense something and handed over a stack of documents, speaking before she could: “The Empress asked me to give this to you.”
Lin Ling became enthralled by what she was reading, completely failing to notice the changes outside. Carla, her mind blank, stared at Lin Ling, also noticing nothing.
Yoshitani Kaede glanced back and sighed helplessly. After telling them to sit tight, she dove sharply downward.
At the same time, accompanied by a roar of thunder, lightning slashed through the sky. The pitter-patter of rain hammered against the aircraft, making eardrums throb and hearts race.
Carla didn’t have time to prepare; due to inertia, she slammed headfirst into the front seat, a bruise forming on her forehead.
Lin Ling didn’t fare much better, though thanks to using the documents to cushion her forehead, her injury wasn’t severe.
“It’s raining?”
Lin Ling held her forehead, struggling to lift her eyelids to look out the window.
Yoshitani Kaede did not answer. Her eyes narrowed as she skillfully manipulated the controls to dodge one lightning strike after another.
“The sky wasn’t this dark just now…” Lin Ling muttered almost to herself. “How did it turn into this?”
Before she could think further, a drop of rain suddenly fell onto the back of her hand, emitting a puff of blue smoke. A faint, stinging pain radiated from that spot.
Gradually, two drops, three, four… more and more rain seeped in. Her clothes and skin all suffered varying degrees of corrosion. Only then did Lin Ling realize what was happening.
This was not pure rain!
