“Then feel my face. Do you not want to know what I look like?”
Li Ting’s words rippled across Xu Yanqiu’s heart. Although the sun overhead was not particularly strong, that internal heat surged once again. This time it felt overwhelming. He could feel his face burning, and he knew without a doubt it was bright red.
However, he also knew that opportunities like this did not come twice. Li Ting might not give him a second chance. While acting spoiled might earn him some indulgence, Xu Yanqiu did not want to let this moment pass. Without realizing it, he was being thoroughly spoiled by Li Ting.
Capriciousness and stubbornness were slowly teaching Xu Yanqiu how to truly live, and he knew Li Ting would allow this transformation to unfold.
“I do,” Xu Yanqiu said. “I want to know what Brother Li looks like.”
His hand, suspended in the air, was caught by Li Ting’s large hand. The older man guided him to touch a face he had never reached before. Whether by accident or design, the first thing Xu Yanqiu touched was warm, soft lips. The little blind boy held onto his courage through the shock. His fingertips tapped against the warm lips, and his pads brushed over them, tracing their shape.
They seemed naturally curved into a smile. The lower lip was slightly fuller than the upper. A thought suddenly flashed through Xu Yanqiu’s mind. These lips must be very good to kiss.
Wait, what on earth was he thinking!
The little blind boy shook his head vigorously, making Li Ting laugh out loud. Xu Yanqiu felt the lips beneath his fingers vibrate with their owner’s laughter. He wanted to withdraw his hand, yet he was drawn in, wanting to explore more.
“How does it feel?” The little fox was determined to tease him and asked with a smile. Xu Yanqiu did not know how to answer, so he simply nodded stiffly. “Very very nice to touch.”
Li Ting was completely unaware of how domineering his gaze was as he looked at Xu Yanqiu, a flicker of possessiveness flashing in his eyes. “Is it time to feel the rest?”
He held Xu Yanqiu’s hand and led it upward. Those slender fingertips touched the bridge of a high nose, lingered for a moment on the cheeks, brushed past the well-shaped ears, traced the thick sword-like eyebrows, and finally reached the eyes they had both been waiting for.
A fox’s eyes are usually narrow and long, and Li Ting’s were no exception. As Xu Yanqiu drew near, he first felt the long, thick lashes. The little blind boy could not help but use his other hand to feel his own lashes. “Brother Li’s lashes are so long.”
“Are they?” Li Ting nuzzled the boy’s palm. The latter paused but did not retreat, finally covering the eyes. Li Ting closed his eyes beneath the boy’s palm. Xu Yanqiu felt a tickle against his skin and finally sketched the image of Li Ting’s eyes in his mind.
He could not see what kind of pupils they held, but he knew they were beautiful. It was these eyes that had seen him when he was being tormented, and these eyes that had been watching over him ever since.
A surge of satisfaction and a strange, new emotion flooded out. Xu Yanqiu withdrew his hand and clenched his fist tight, wanting to hold onto everything he had felt today. Then he heard Li Ting say, “Whenever you want to feel my face, just tell me. I will not let you forget my appearance.”
“Okay.” Xu Yanqiu reached out, and the comb was placed back in his hand. Everything returned to how it began: one sitting, one standing. The dark hair slid through small hands before being gathered into a low ponytail. The little blind boy specifically left out two strands, weaving them into fine braids and tying them together.
Li Ting reached up to feel them. “Not bad at all. I will let you comb my hair again next time.”
The little blind boy did not realize he was still smiling. He felt for the small stool and sat back down, but at that moment, a heavy thud sounded nearby. He stood up in fright. “Brother Li, what was that noise?”
Li Ting stood up and looked at Chang Shouye, who had climbed over the wall and accidentally fallen into the chicken coop. He first patted Xu Yanqiu’s hand to reassure him. “It is nothing. It is Master Chang.”
Chang Shouye did not care about the dirt on his clothes. His first reaction upon standing was to make a shush gesture toward Li Ting. Li Ting was puzzled but nodded anyway and sat back down with Xu Yanqiu. Just then, a chaotic sound of running came from outside the wall, followed by a stranger’s angry shouting. “Chang Shouye, get out here!”
Li Ting tilted his head and looked suspiciously at Chang Shouye, who looked miserable and did not dare make a sound. It was only after the person outside searched for a long time and left after shouting a few threats that Chang Shouye let out a long breath. He crawled out of the chicken coop and looked awkwardly at the startled Xu Yanqiu and the confused Li Ting. “Master Li, I am sorry. I was in a hurry to hide and lost my way. I did not crush your chicks, did I?”
He turned to check the area. Seeing no flattened chicks, he exhaled in relief and whispered, “That scared the life out of me.”
“Is Brother Shouye hiding from Brother Feng again?” Before Xu Yanqiu could finish, Li Ting poked his cheek. He instinctively corrected himself. “Is Brother Shouye hiding from Master Feng again?”
Chang Shouye noticed that Li Ting’s expression improved significantly after Xu Yanqiu changed his wording. Although he did not know why, he had disturbed Li Ting, so he explained, “I am not hiding from him again. I hide from him every day.”
“Are you enemies?” Li Ting asked. Chang Shouye waved his hand and sighed, flicking grass off his clothes. “If only we were enemies.”
Xu Yanqiu tugged on Li Ting’s sleeve. When Li Ting leaned in, the boy whispered, “Master Feng, Feng Lin, is Brother Shouye’s fiancé.”
After a thought, he added, “He is a Shuang’er, just like me.”
Li Ting rubbed the boy’s head and, while Xu Yanqiu was fixing his hair, turned to Chang Shouye. “Your spouse is chasing you. Why are you running?”
Chang Shouye did not expect Xu Yanqiu to tell Li Ting so much. He wanted to give the boy a threatening look, then remembered the boy could not see and gave up. He chose his words carefully. “There is a misunderstanding between us.”
“Did you find someone else and get caught?” The little fox saw Xu Yanqiu listening intently, so he started to gossip. Chang Shouye shook his head violently. “How is that possible? I am devoted to him. It is just that some things happened recently.”
It turned out that Feng Lin’s family was not well-off. Although Chang Shouye’s family ran the only clinic in East Xu Village, after hearing that a wealthy young master was pursuing Feng Lin, Chang Shouye actually developed the idea of giving him up.
“Maybe if he stays with me, he will never have a good life,” Chang Shouye said dejectedly. “If letting go means he can live better, I might as well”
Before he could finish, someone grabbed him and punched him in the side of the face. It was not a heavy blow, but it was just enough to knock that thought out of him.
“Master Master Li, why did you hit me?” Chang Shouye fell back, clutching his face. Ignoring the dust on his clothes, he looked up in shock.
“Hey,” Li Ting squatted in front of him, his warmth replaced by coldness, or rather, an excessive calmness. “Are you awake now?”
“When was I ever confused? I have been very clear!” Chang Shouye was furious at the questioning. “By what right do you hit me?”
Li Ting stood up, hand on his hip, and looked down at him. “You did not look like a man, so I could not help myself. My apologies.”
He was so righteously arrogant that Chang Shouye could find no words to argue. Being stared at by those narrow fox eyes made his heart thud for no reason. Then he heard Li Ting say, “The fact that Feng Lin is still chasing you means he still has you in his heart. And you want to push him away? Do you have so little confidence in taking care of him?”
Chang Shouye was stunned. He had always thought Feng Lin’s persistence was because he disliked him, but he had never considered what Li Ting just said. Once he realized this, he immediately slapped himself, stood up, and prepared to climb back over the wall.
Li Ting: ” ”
Despite the thought, the meddling was done. Li Ting did not care how Chang Shouye left. Hearing a yelp, he explained to Xu Yanqiu, “Your Brother Shouye flipped back out.”
“Oh.” Xu Yanqiu nodded obediently and frowned. “What were we doing just now?”
Li Ting saw how cute he looked and was about to go over and pinch him when he heard the sounds of a fight outside. The little fox’s brow twitched. He thought Chang Shouye was being beaten by Feng Lin and planned to ignore it as it was family business. Besides, Chang Shouye deserved a beating. Unexpectedly, someone outside the wall called his name.
“Li Ting! Save me, save me!”
“Brother Li, someone is calling your name.” Xu Yanqiu tugged at Li Ting’s sleeve. “Are you going to look?”
Xu Yanqiu dragged out the last word slightly, scratching at Li Ting’s heart like a plea. Li Ting could not resist. He cupped Xu Yanqiu’s face with both hands and squeezed. “You should eat more and get a bit fatter so you are easier to pinch.”
“I am already growing fast,” Xu Yanqiu squeezed out the words. Li Ting wanted to keep pinching, but the person outside shouted again, “Li Ting! Are we brothers or not!”
Li Ting clicked his tongue. He led Xu Yanqiu to the porch and covered him with the new small blanket he bought yesterday. “Wait for me here. Do not run around.”
“I know.” Xu Yanqiu patted his arm and said urgently, “Brother Li, go save him.”
Li Ting took a deep breath, opened the gate, and rushed out. He saw Chang Shouye scuffling with a handsome man while a Shuang’er stood by, lost.
“Li Ting, Li Ting, you finally came! Quick, pull this man off me!” The man waved at Li Ting, who stepped forward and yanked Chang Shouye away. The man immediately began tidying his clothes. “My newly bought clothes!”
Li Ting pushed Chang Shouye toward the Shuang’er. He did not need to guess the man’s identity. “So you are the wealthy young master pursuing someone else’s fiancé, Brother Qianjing?”
