The Lady I Flirted With Is Here - Chapter 14
Chapter 14: Confession
As the pale blue light of dawn began to break, Lin Xian realized that she had somehow spent the entire night chatting with Fang Daiyu. After the photo-exchange game ended, she had only asked Fang Daiyu two questions: “Sister, have you ever been in love? Are you single now?”
Lin Xian thought to herself that such a celestial being must have a rich romantic history. She was curious—a curiosity mixed with gossip, admiration, and a desperate attempt to gauge the other woman’s preferences.
What kind of person is interested in someone else’s romantic history? A close friend, a gossip, or someone with “ulterior motives”?
Fang Daiyu replied: “What about you? You asked me two questions; at least answer one of them. My questions for you are the same.”
Lin Xian realized her “wicked” intentions had been seen through, but she wasn’t discouraged. She might as well say it; her romantic history was as blank as a sheet of paper. Saying it out loud was just a bit embarrassing. “I’ve been ‘single since the womb’ for twenty years now.”
Upon seeing this, Fang Daiyu was clearly overjoyed, though she had to suppress the flutter in her heart. “You’re so excellent. No pursuers?”
Lin Xian thought Sister Daiyu might be looking down on her, so she typed hesitantly: “There were some, mostly in middle and high school. But since I came out in college, there haven’t been any.”
Came out?
This was undoubtedly a heavy bombshell dropped on Fang Daiyu’s head.
She had been trying to test Lin Xian’s orientation, and now the other girl had just voluntarily outed herself. Fang Daiyu felt the surprise was so great she needed a moment to process it. At the same time, she felt as if it were destiny—whatever she wanted was simply falling into her lap. This smooth, effortless turn of events felt almost illusory, making her heart swell.
It only took Fang Daiyu two minutes to compose herself, but to Lin Xian, those two minutes felt like an eternity. The person who had been replying instantly had suddenly vanished for a long time after the words “came out.” It was impossible not to worry. Preparing for the worst, Lin Xian hugged her phone and passed the time by counting the squares on her tablecloth.
Then, she received a message from Fang Daiyu: “What a coincidence. I didn’t have any pursuers in college either, because everyone knew I was gay. However, I didn’t ‘come out’ officially.”
Just as Fang Daiyu had been shocked and delighted moments ago, Lin Xian now felt exactly the same.
Fang Daiyu’s second message followed immediately: “Xianxian, I’ve also been ‘single since the womb’ until now. I’m an old woman—will you lose interest?”
“How could I?” Lin Xian hit send before she even thought about it.
How could she? She looked so young; people would believe it if she said she was Lin Xian’s younger sister. Lin Xian remembered Fang Daiyu wasn’t short, but why did she look so youthful? It was almost irritating.
Since learning about Fang Daiyu’s orientation and relationship status, things seemed to be racing uncontrollably toward an unknown yet anticipated direction.
Lin Xian suddenly thought of something: If I get together with Fang Daiyu, won’t we look like an older sister with a younger sister? Or a sister with a younger brother?
The thought was quite annoying!
Wait a minute, her imagination was running wild again.
“You look really young. By the way, how old are you?” Lin Xian only knew that Fang Daiyu had graduated two years ago; she hadn’t asked for her specific age. This made her suddenly excited: Maybe Fang Daiyu is a child prodigy? If she is, it’s possible she skipped grades. It would be even better if she’s younger than me.
Fang Daiyu seemed to know what she was thinking: “Little sister, ‘Sister’ is twenty-two.”
Lin Xian didn’t give up: “Nominal age or actual age? Tell me what year you were born first.”
Fang Daiyu typed: “May 1996.”
Lin Xian squeezed a small balloon next to her until it popped. One year and four months. She had still lost the age game. Lin Xian shifted the topic at the right time: “You look so young. Truly beautiful!”
Fang Daiyu wouldn’t let it go: “Little cutie, come on, call me ‘Sister’!”
Lin Xian, stubborn to the end, struggled: “How can you be so sure I’m younger than you? I’m from the South. We Southerners live in the mountains, and the education level isn’t great. We start school very late, you know? Even though I’m a senior, I’m actually already twenty-two.”
“Oh? Is that so?” Fang Daiyu clearly didn’t believe it.
Lin Xian lied through her teeth: “Of course!”
Fang Daiyu knew it was nonsense, but since children inevitably have a competitive side and care about their dignity, she humored her: “Mhm, you’re older than me.”
Lin Xian became smug and forgot herself: “Come on then, Little Daiyu, call me ‘Sister’!”
She cursed herself for calling her “Sister” so many times before. Was she a moron?
Fang Daiyu smiled, a peculiar glint in her eyes. She sent a voice message that was suggestive and evocative: “Sister~” Her voice was low and gentle. Lin Xian was intoxicated. Dazed, she replied: “Good girl. You have to be this obedient next time too~”
“Okay, Sister.”
Lin Xian grinned like a fool, not realizing she was immersed in a lie of her own making.
Having heard Little Daiyu call her “Sister,” Lin Xian felt satisfied. Then she remembered something else: “Little Daiyu, how tall are you?”
Lin Xian couldn’t remember Fang Daiyu’s height from that day. Standing next to Yin Tao in high heels, she had seemed a bit short. But she didn’t look too short. Lin Xian conservatively estimated Fang Daiyu to be $166$ cm, which would make her own $168$ cm height very desirable.
Asking about height?
This behavior was very familiar—it carried that same childish competitive streak. Fang Daiyu suddenly felt a bit mischievous. She guessed Lin Xian definitely didn’t know her actual height; they had spent most of their meeting sitting down. Fang Daiyu replied: “What’s wrong with $163$ cm?” She lied about her height by $10$ cm without blinking an eye.
Lin Xian, unaware she was being played, jumped straight into the trap: “Hehehe, were you wearing height-increasing insoles that day? I remembered you weren’t that short. I’m $168$ cm, and it seemed like you were only a tiny bit shorter than me.”
“Is that so?” Fang Daiyu replied. “I can’t believe you noticed.”
Learning that Fang Daiyu was shorter than her made Lin Xian happy: “It’s fine, I won’t mind your height.”
The moment she sent the message, Lin Xian felt it was a bit off, so she added: “I mean, your height is just right. Very cute.”
Saying “I won’t mind your height” sounded like the doting words of a couple. It was a bit inappropriate between friends. Fang Daiyu pretended to be sad: “It’s okay if you mind. I’ve been used to people saying I’m short since I was a kid.”
What Fang Daiyu said was actually true. Among the boys, everyone said she wasn’t tall enough—that if she were taller, they could play basketball together more effectively.
Lin Xian, having taken the bait, was filled with righteous indignation: “How can they say you’re short? $163$ cm is great for a girl. It’s perfect. They’re just jealous of your beauty. Little Daiyu, don’t be sad. You’re perfect in my eyes.”
Fang Daiyu led her further into the trap: “Really? How perfect?”
Fang Daiyu added: “More perfect than a future girlfriend? More perfect than your ideal lover?”
Lin Xian was completely dismantled. What does this mean?
Perhaps it was because the night was too beautiful, or perhaps Lin Xian had become too bold tonight, or perhaps Fang Daiyu’s hints were too obvious. In short, Lin Xian’s brain overheated. Once a person who has never been in love receives a hint from someone they like, they easily do something that others might find socially awkward.
Fortunately, that person was Fang Daiyu.
“As perfect as my future girlfriend, and more perfect than my ideal lover,” Lin Xian gritted her teeth and hit send.
Upon seeing the message, Fang Daiyu’s face, which rarely ever flushed, turned hot. She lay motionless on the bed, stunned.
Lin Xian pressed on, moving forward bravely: “Don’t you wonder why you’re asking me this?”
“Daiyu, you’re jealous.”
“Fang Daiyu, my ideal type… is you. I didn’t have an ideal type before. I thought I vulgarly liked mature women or lolitas, until you appeared.”
“Fang Daiyu, I like you. What about you?”
“Are you willing to be with me?”
Lin Xian had confessed. She had confessed in such a hurried, ridiculous way, without even preparing a ceremony.
If Jingjing were there, she would surely be holding her head in a headache.
In Lin Xian’s heart, Fang Daiyu asking her those things meant she liked her. If the feeling was mutual, why not be together immediately? She wanted to know more about Fang Daiyu, even if she knew nothing about her now. But she wouldn’t find a better atmosphere or opportunity than this. Lin Xian felt she was right, and she had caught Fang Daiyu off guard.
Fang Daiyu didn’t reply for a long time.
A minute, a second… time passed slowly.
Lin Xian’s heart began to sink. Just as she began to realize her brashness and impulsiveness, and started to weigh her words to apologize and weave a lie to explain away the sudden confession, Fang Daiyu appeared.
“I just went to wash my face.”
“Huh?” Lin Xian was confused. That didn’t sound like a typical reaction to a confession.
“My face was too hot; I needed to cool down,” Fang Daiyu sent another message.
“So, Xianxian, have you thought it through—that you want to confess to me? From now on, we would be a couple. Being in a relationship requires responsibility. Have you considered it?”
“Or is it just a momentary impulse?” Fang Daiyu’s questioning tone made it hard for Lin Xian to read her thoughts. Was it a rejection? Or an acceptance?
The stubborn Lin Xian pushed forward: “It’s not an impulse. From the first time I saw you, my heart fluttered.”
“I can’t stop thinking about you; I lose sleep and appetite over you. Whether you reject me or agree, I won’t regret it.” Actually, she regretted it the moment she sent it. Tears began to flow uncontrollably from the corners of her eyes because she suddenly thought of the worst outcome. It was possible that she wouldn’t even be able to be friends with Fang Daiyu in the end. Was her first love going to vanish that quickly?
“Alright then. We are together, Xianxian.”
“I like you too. You moved my heart.”
It was as if a hundred flowers had suddenly bloomed, or as if frozen mountains had welcomed the spring breeze. Lin Xian felt an unprecedented thrill rushing through her marrow, and her entire soul felt unnaturally soft. She felt as if she were walking on clouds, light and airy. It felt incredibly smooth—like a beautiful dream. If this is a dream, please don’t let me wake up, okay?
Yet she knew clearly that this was reality!
When what one seeks and desires truly comes to pass, Lin Xian wanted to tell the whole world: a person really can be so excited they feel faint and floaty.
The world had become much more beautiful and clear, as if the greatest gift of fate had struck her.
Lin Xian, the lesbian who had been single for twenty years, finally had a girlfriend! And it was a celestial being that many people could only dream of. If she told people, would they even believe her?
Lin Xian smiled—she wanted to laugh. Afraid of waking others, she buried her head in her quilt and laughed out loud.
She thought about it, then laughed again. Thought about it, then laughed again.
The happy Lin Xian couldn’t resist sending a message to Fang Daiyu: “I feel so happy right now, Daiyu.”
