The Infatuated Cannon Fodder Has Completely Moved On - Chapter 14
“Jin Yuzhen spoke candidly: ‘Don’t worry, I am even worse to others.’”
The documentary filming lasted for over a month. Because Jin Yuzhen was blind at the time, Nie Feiyin took many photos everywhere she went, thinking she would print them all out to show her once they returned.
It was only later that she realized once the program aired, Jin Yuzhen would naturally be able to see it; those photos would not be of much use. She had added Jin Yuzhen on WeChat through a large group chat, but the messages she sent afterward never received a reply. Not long after, that WeChat account was deleted, and Jin Yuzhen resigned from her job.
Xue Cheng knew about this and often sighed that they were not meant to be. However, Nie Feiyin knew that she simply had not seized the opportunity.
Yujin Restaurant
When Jin Yuzhen arrived at the private room, the person inside was ordering food. She listed a long list of dietary restrictions and then ordered a Butter Crab, explaining everything from selecting the crab to the precautions for opening the pot. She sounded incredibly professional; for a moment, the waiter considered recruiting her to work in the kitchen.
The door was ajar, and Jin Yuzhen knocked symbolically a few times. The person ordering looked up, her eyes lighting up. She hurriedly stood up to greet her with an expression of joy so exaggerated it was as if Jin Yuzhen had returned from the dead.
“I was prepared to spend the night in an empty room. You actually came?”
Jin Yuzhen said, “Then I should go?”
Fu Jiao grabbed her hand. “No way! I worked so hard to get you here.”
After they sat down, the waiter repeated her requirements. Fu Jiao listened and, finding no issues, signed the order. At a place like Yujin, consumption was high; since guests spent a lot of money, they were certainly entitled to make requests. However, it was rare to see someone so professional about food, as if she had once been a chef. The waiter was cautious and made notes for the kitchen before retreating.
Jin Yuzhen asked, “How is your private restaurant doing?”
At the mention of this, Fu Jiao felt miserable. “Once a hobby becomes a career, I realized my life had reached its limit. So, I decided that cooking will be a pure hobby from now on. I have leased the restaurant out.”
Heaven knew how much grievance she had suffered. Jin Yuzhen asked with interest, “Can you be more specific?”
Fu Jiao shook her head as she spoke. “Have you ever seen a customer who wants to control how many pieces of green onion, ginger, and garlic are cut? Have you ever seen a customer who wants to control how many folds are on a crab?”
Jin Yuzhen looked at her. “Are you not exactly like that?”
Fu Jiao said, “Exactly. That is why I am better suited to make things difficult for others.”
Jin Yuzhen was left speechless. Still, she truly could not understand. “You are in computer science. Why did you switch careers so drastically?”
Fu Jiao smiled. “Just adding a bit of Java to the catering industry. What about you? Does a media major also teach people how to handle collectibles?”
Jin Yuzhen said, “In terms of hype, there are quite a few similarities.”
Fu Jiao raised an eyebrow. “If you put it that way, I really do not know what to say.”
Jin Yuzhen suggested, “Then you should sing.”
Fu Jiao said, “I was even thinking about retiring with you. Are you always this blunt with me?”
Jin Yuzhen replied candidly, “Don’t worry, I am even worse to others.”
Fu Jiao’s eyelashes fluttered; she felt a trace of inexplicable emotion. Having eaten lunch at the Jin family house, Jin Yuzhen was not hungry at all. She only drank a little soup while watching Fu Jiao eat heartily, thinking that Miss Fu could become an eating show host the next time she changed careers.
After Fu Jiao finished eating, she commented, “Not as delicious as mine.”
Jin Yuzhen said, “You might as well become a chef at Yujin. Your employment problem would be solved instantly.”
Fu Jiao’s expression suddenly turned solemn. “Zhenzhen, do you intend to keep living like this?”
Jin Yuzhen was surprised. “What?”
Fu Jiao pulled a letter from her bag and handed it to her with a look of reluctance. Jin Yuzhen anticipated something and hesitated to open it. On the envelope, only two words were written: Buna.
Fu Jiao said, “I have read it. It is exactly the same as the one from back then.”
Jin Yuzhen did not listen further but opened the envelope to see for herself. On a smooth, brand-new half-page of paper, a fable was written in neat regular script.
The Monarch’s Revenge
In ancient times, there was a kingdom that enjoyed favorable weather and peaceful people for thousands of years. But one day, a rival country from a thousand miles away attacked and occupied the land. The entire nation became slaves. To better rule the country, the monarch of the rival nation ordered people to learn the secret language of the royal family.
The fallen monarch, now a prisoner, was unwilling to submit. He used the secret language to instruct the translation officials to find a way to make the rival monarch look foolish.
The translator racked his brains and finally came up with a plan. When summoned by the rival monarch, the official knelt below the steps.
“How do you say ‘hello’?”
“Buna.”
From then on, the people of both countries began to use ‘Buna’ instead of ‘hello.’
Thousands of years passed until later generations discovered through research that ‘Buna’ actually meant ‘pigs and dogs.’ But the word, having been used for millennia, could no longer be changed.
After Jin Yuzhen finished reading, her hand involuntarily tightened. She remained silent for a long while. Once, she had received a similar letter, and afterward, it felt as if she were being haunted. The ghost would not disperse.
Fu Jiao said, “Half a month ago, someone came to my shop to eat. When they left, this letter was on the table. They have come knocking again. What should we do?”
No wonder she had suddenly closed her shop. Jin Yuzhen said, “Let me think.”
What did the person who sent the letter want? Money? It did not seem like it. She had nothing else. As for blackmail? Her character had flaws, but she did not commit murder or arson; she had not reached the level of being blackmailed. If those bizarre events had not truly happened years ago, she would suspect there were ghosts in the world.
Fu Jiao was curious. “Is it a riddle game? What is the hidden meaning of this fable?”
Jin Yuzhen said, “I do not know.”
Fu Jiao sighed. “Do I have to go back to my old profession?”
Jin Yuzhen hummed in agreement and proposed, “Come to my shop and stay for a while. I happen to have something I want to discuss with you.”
Fu Jiao looked up in surprise, her eyes wide. “You are willing to have me?”
Jin Yuzhen choked. “The way you say that makes me sound like some big shot. This is just a timely coincidence.”
Fu Jiao stopped teasing her and asked seriously, “What do we need to discuss? What preparations do I need to make?”
Jin Yuzhen said, “My eldest uncle has suddenly become very close to Jin Ke. Who would believe there is no foul play? I am afraid of alerting them, so if you go there, you can help cover for me.”
“Your eldest uncle can really live. A few years ago, I saw his fatty liver was so bad I thought he was going to pass away, but he is still alive.” He really was an old man who would not die.
Fu Jiao thought of something and said, “Those two low-tier celebrities we handled the other day, I saw they were both signed by your eldest uncle. They are in the same company as Jin Ke. Wait, let me think. That company is called Gao-something; I forgot.”
“Gaoyi Entertainment,” Jin Yuzhen added for her.
“Right, that is the name.” Fu Jiao did not quite understand. “What is Jin Hong doing signing them so secretly? They do not make money.”
It was quite unlucky; recruiting them for no reason was too abnormal. Even if he were plotting for the family business, he would not choose such small fry who only produce negative side effects.
Jin Yuzhen said, “I checked this company. The artists they sign all have something in common.”
Fu Jiao also knew. “Indeed. Without exception, they are either illegitimate children or men who married into wealthy families.” Her face looked horrified. “You suspect…”
After what happened back then, Jin Yuzhen had become extremely sensitive. She would rather believe it was possible than ignore it. “It is not impossible. When such people form groups for no reason, there is a high probability they are going to do something bad.”
Fu Jiao agreed with this statement. Having been a chef for a while, returning to her original profession was not a bad thing. In fact, she really missed the days of fighting side by side with Jin Yuzhen.
But there was another problem. “Jin Hong’s matter is an internal affair of your Jin family. If you intervene, what will Jin Zhuhuai think?”
Jin Yuzhen said, “On this matter, Zhuhuai and I have no disagreement.”
Fu Jiao felt a bit troubled. “I will be direct; just listen. Jin Zhuhuai has been working non-stop these past few years; her momentum is really strong. She has already raised the banner. What about you? Are you really not going to compete?”
Her grandmother had also asked this implicitly before. She was very puzzled. Compete for what? She had plenty of money. She had no obsession with the Jin family business; in fact, the Jin family was a burden to her.
“To each their own. Zhuhuai will do very well.”
Fu Jiao looked at her and finally concluded, “Wealth has limited your desires.”
The affairs of the collection shop were easy to hand over. As soon as Fu Jiao arrived, she became the shop manager and reviewed various materials, especially the auction section. After reading, Fu Jiao had only one thought: she really hated rich people.
Although she hated it, she did not forget the serious business. She stayed in the office area of the shop and openly investigated Gaoyi Entertainment thoroughly.
When Jin Yuzhen returned, Fu Jiao made hojicha herself and shared a cup. “No alcohol, try it.”
Jin Yuzhen took a sip, her expression relaxing. “Delicious. Why did your shop not become popular?”
Fu Jiao said, “Probably because there was too much rose red in my shop?”
“…”
Jin Yuzhen found almond syrup in the cabinet and added it; the taste became even better. Fu Jiao showed her the intercepted data. “This is what Gaoyi Entertainment’s intranet looks like. There is also a forum called Gaoyi Hall. I guess it might mean ‘good brothers walk together for a lifetime.'”
Jin Yuzhen never doubted Fu Jiao’s skills; Fu Jiao could find anything that had ever existed. “To put it simply, this company is like an admissions office. They specifically pick men who live off women. Can you guess what their business is?”
Jin Yuzhen looked at half of the data. “Stealing family property.”
Fu Jiao clapped. “Smart.”
Jin Yuzhen finished reading all the data and finally understood why Fu Jiao dared to intercept the intranet. It was such shameful stuff.
Fu Jiao said, “The boss’s history of making a fortune is enough to ponder. At an age when he was penniless, he married into a wealthy family. In just three years, he was the only one left in the entire family; even the watchdog died.”
Jin Yuzhen frowned. “It was premeditated.”
Fu Jiao’s expression was deep. “They are an organization, the kind passed down through generations. Look at the forum; it is full of teaching members how to win the hearts of wealthy young ladies, how to take over a family with no heirs, and how to swallow family property. The problem is, after the whole process, there is no evidence to prove they broke the law.”
That explained it. Jin Hong and Jin Ke had united inexplicably and collaborated with those obscure artists. It turned out an organization was helping them strategize.
Jin Yuzhen thought of something and said, “Last year, there was a news story in Yunyao about a mother and daughter driving off a cliff. The man sold more than a dozen of the woman’s pre-marital houses and then went abroad.”
Fu Jiao changed the page and showed her the files from the encrypted chat room. “Look, is this not a large scrolling banner of that incident? A successful case.”
