The Host Has Fallen for the Second Female Lead Again - Chapter 62
Xi Ruan glanced at Ji Mingxiao. The only thought in her head was, “Go back and look at it yourself.”
“Then I’ll head back?”
“Hey, no. How can you just leave after getting your things? Aren’t you going to stay and keep me company?” Ji Mingxiao frowned.
Xi Ruan blinked at her. “Didn’t you tell me to cultivate properly? Well, cultivating properly starts right now.”
Ji Mingxiao was speechless. She didn’t want to go back on her word, but she also didn’t want Xi Ruan to leave.
Xi Ruan smiled, a mischievous look on her face.
“Stay here and study. If you don’t understand something, you can ask your master.” Ji Mingxiao also broke into a kind smile. “Just sit next to me and get started.”
Xi Ruan was speechless again. She had no desire to be tutored by Ji Mingxiao, and from the look of things, Ji Mingxiao didn’t seem like a proper master anyway.
“What’s wrong? Why aren’t you sitting?” Ji Mingxiao asked, looking at Xi Ruan.
Xi Ruan wanted to say, “I want to go back,” but what came out was, “Yes, Master. I’m sitting down right now.”
Xi Ruan: ???
She glared at Ji Mingxiao, who just continued to smile as if she hadn’t done anything.
Xi Ruan suddenly realized that she might have underestimated this person’s shamelessness.
She sighed, knowing she couldn’t leave, and finally pulled out her storage bag. It contained many things, and she looked at them one by one. The instructions for each item were very clear. She tilted her head to glance at the smiling Ji Mingxiao, her fingers tightening slightly around an object.
“What are you looking at me for?” Xi Ruan shifted her gaze and went back to the instructions in her hand.
“Why can’t I look at you?”
Xi Ruan’s lips twitched as she looked back at Ji Mingxiao. “Don’t you get tired of this?”
“Your matters are my matters. Why would I get tired of my own business?”
Xi Ruan rolled her eyes in exasperation. “You’re just being slick.”
“I’m just stating what’s in my heart,” Ji Mingxiao replied.
Xi Ruan stopped talking and lowered her head, continuing to study the items.
“Host, if you like her, why don’t you just confess?” System A asked.
“It’s not the right time,” Ji Mingxiao said, averting her gaze.
System A was silent for a moment. “She doesn’t seem to dislike you.”
“It’s just average goodwill,” Ji Mingxiao said, feeling a little irritated as she casually flipped open a book.
System A didn’t understand. “Then when are you going to wait?”
“Until she’s willing to keep her memories from every world,” Ji Mingxiao said.
System A said nothing more.
Xi Ruan noticed Ji Mingxiao’s sudden low spirits beside her and poked her arm with the end of her brush. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” Ji Mingxiao smiled. “What, is there something you don’t understand?”
“No, you wrote it all very clearly.”
“That’s good.” Ji Mingxiao looked at Xi Ruan’s face. “Well, you keep reading. I’m going to cultivate.”
“Okay.” Xi Ruan nodded, her eyes still filled with a little confusion. She had a feeling that something she didn’t know about had just happened.
She stared at Ji Mingxiao for a while before looking away.
“Host, why don’t you ask Xi Ruan to keep her memories?”
“Me asking for it and her doing it on her own are two different things.”
System A felt a bit emotional. “I just realized you’re really not a jerk.”
“You just realized?” Ji Mingxiao raised an eyebrow.
System A fell silent, and Ji Mingxiao didn’t continue the topic, just started cultivating.
The afternoon slowly passed. When Ji Mingxiao opened her eyes again, it was already dark.
Xi Ruan had lit a candle, and the room was quite bright.
“You’ve been studying all afternoon?” Ji Mingxiao looked at Xi Ruan, who was still writing, feeling a little confused.
“Yeah, what’s wrong?”
“I can’t believe it.” Ji Mingxiao stood up and walked over to Xi Ruan to take a look. “Before, when you and I did homework together, you’d write for five minutes and play for ten.”
Xi Ruan stared at Ji Mingxiao. “I think you’re talking nonsense.”
“But I’m telling the truth.” Ji Mingxiao picked up Xi Ruan’s book and looked at it. After flipping through a dozen pages, she raised an eyebrow and looked at Xi Ruan again. “You really didn’t play around?”
Xi Ruan was speechless. “I just took the time to study the things in my storage bag carefully, that’s all.” She stared at Ji Mingxiao, feeling a little guilty, even though she thought of studying the items in her bag as a form of learning.
Ji Mingxiao patted Xi Ruan’s head. “Go back and get some rest.”
“Oh.” Xi Ruan picked up her books and walked away. As she reached the door, she looked back at Ji Mingxiao. “What’s wrong with you?”
“What do you mean, ‘what’s wrong’?”
“You’re acting strange.”
“Am I?” Ji Mingxiao looked at Xi Ruan, her eyes clear and frank.
Xi Ruan frowned, then turned and left. “Fine, don’t tell me.”
Ji Mingxiao slowly walked to the door and watched Xi Ruan’s retreating figure.
Over the next few days, Xi Ruan and Ji Mingxiao cultivated together. Xi Ruan truly had great talent, even more so than Xu Cu. Some of the more difficult spells, she would learn after being taught just once.
Three months later, Xu Cu returned.
In fact, Xu Cu should have returned much earlier, but every time she was about to come back, Ji Mingxiao would give her a new task.
Xu Cu stood at the entrance of the immortal’s abode. She was disappointed not to see anyone. After entering, she headed straight for Ji Mingxiao’s courtyard and froze when she saw Xi Ruan sitting not far from her master.
“Master, I’m back.”
Xi Ruan was in meditation. She had felt Xu Cu’s return but said nothing.
“Mm.” Ji Mingxiao nodded and glanced at Xu Cu. “Did you gain anything from this experience?”
Xi Ruan heard Ji Mingxiao’s emotionless voice and, thinking of how she looked right now, had to suppress a laugh.
Xu Cu was stunned. She had been so focused on hurrying back and solving the issues she’d encountered that she hadn’t made any breakthroughs.
Ji Mingxiao frowned as she looked at her. “Your cultivation has been stagnant for a long time. Why do you think I sent you to gain experience?”
Xu Cu opened her mouth to speak.
“You can go,” Ji Mingxiao said, waving her hand and closing her eyes again.
“Yes.” Xu Cu glanced at Xi Ruan. She also wanted to ask if she could cultivate here but didn’t know how to bring it up.
Xu Cu turned and walked out.
Xi Ruan opened her eyes and looked at Ji Mingxiao. “She was so anxious to get back, and you said that. She’s going to cry.”
“Let her cry. What does it have to do with me?” Ji Mingxiao opened the jade scroll. “Let’s go find something to do outside, too.”
“Great!” Xi Ruan immediately leaned over. “It’s so boring just cultivating every day.”
Xi Ruan watched as Ji Mingxiao flipped through the jade scroll. “This one!”
She immediately took a liking to a certain task and pointed her finger at the scroll.
Ji Mingxiao took a look.
“Withered Bones and a Beautiful Face.”
She scanned the general description of the task.
“Half a month ago in Linhai Town, a woman walking down the street suddenly burst into flames. Water couldn’t extinguish it. The fire burned away all her flesh, but her clothes and bones remained. Ten days later, another woman eating a meal was also burned, her flesh gone. Her mother tried to die with her but found that the fire had no temperature, and her hands could touch it without being burned.” Xi Ruan stroked her chin.
“The two people who died were both famous beauties in Linhai Town.” She touched her chin again. “It’s too scary.”
Ji Mingxiao glanced at it and erased the task from the list. “Let’s go check it out tomorrow.”
“Okay.” Xi Ruan nodded.
When Xu Cu found out that Ji Mingxiao and Xi Ruan were leaving, she was completely distraught.
“Master, shouldn’t my junior sister and I go?” Xu Cu asked.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve been to the mortal world,” said Ji Mingxiao, who had just gone out to buy roasted chicken the night before. “You stay in the immortal’s abode and think carefully about what you should be doing.”
With that, Ji Mingxiao waved her sleeve and took Xi Ruan away.
Xi Ruan looked back at Xu Cu. “You’re really mean.”
“Huh?”
“Every time she comes to find you, you say all these profound-sounding things. It’s obvious you’re doing it on purpose.”
“What else can I say?” Ji Mingxiao looked ahead. “Only these kinds of words are hard to find fault with.”
Xi Ruan’s lips twitched, and she looked back again. “Do you think she’ll secretly follow us?”
“She won’t.”
“Why not?”
“I activated the barrier on the immortal’s abode. She can’t get out.”
Xi Ruan: …
“Then how do you plan to explain it when you get back?”
“I don’t need to explain. I’m the master.” Ji Mingxiao glanced at Xi Ruan again.
The two of them traveled quickly, and it took them about an hour to get there, as it wasn’t too far.
In fact, Ji Mingxiao could have just teleported, but she wanted to enjoy the feeling of riding the clouds with Xi Ruan.
Linhai Town was in a state of panic recently, and when the two of them appeared in the town, they immediately attracted a lot of attention.
Ji Mingxiao looked around and frowned.
“What’s wrong?”
“Ghostly mischief,” Ji Mingxiao said in a low voice.
Xi Ruan was a little surprised. “Is it powerful?”
“Since I can see it, it’s not powerful,” Ji Mingxiao said. She looked around again. Although the thing wasn’t powerful, it probably wouldn’t be easy to catch it directly.
Xi Ruan gave Ji Mingxiao a meaningful look. “Don’t mess this up.”
The two of them found an inn and asked for two superior rooms.
“Young ladies, do you have important business here?” the waiter asked as he led them to their rooms.
“What’s wrong?”
“Things haven’t been peaceful here lately, especially for pretty girls. If you don’t have any important business, it’s best to leave early.” The waiter lowered his voice.
“Tell us more,” Ji Mingxiao said, stopping and looking at him.
The waiter looked around. “We don’t know what kind of monster has appeared recently, but the two most beautiful girls in town have fallen victim.”
“The first girl was walking down the street when she suddenly burst into flames. I saw it myself. It was so strange. After she burned up, her bones were still standing, and her clothes weren’t damaged, but her flesh was all gone.” The waiter shuddered.
Ji Mingxiao nodded. “Are there any other strange things besides that?”
“I don’t think so.”
Ji Mingxiao took out a silver ingot and gave it to the waiter. “Then help me ask around. See if anything else strange has happened here recently.”
“Yes, yes!” The waiter’s eyes lit up, and he immediately nodded.
