The Host Has Fallen for the Second Female Lead Again - Chapter 55
Xi Ruan was so frightened she leaped directly off the sofa.
The venue instantly descended into chaos.
Ji Mingxiao crouched behind the podium, her expression largely unreadable and calm. She hadn’t actually seen the bullet; she had reacted entirely because System A let out a shriek. The surroundings were very noisy, but someone quickly came to her side and led her away to another location.
Only one shot had been fired.
“Miss Lin, don’t be afraid. We’ll find the person responsible.”
“I’m fine.” Ji Mingxiao smiled and said nothing more.
Most people assumed Ji Mingxiao was in shock. However, she was merely conversing with System A.
“You can remind me like this? It doesn’t violate any rules?” Ji Mingxiao asked.
System A: ???
“I couldn’t help it. You won’t report me, will you?” System A was a little nervous. It just thought the current drama was too exciting, and it would be a shame if Ji Mingxiao died just like that.
“No, I won’t.” Ji Mingxiao took a sip of water. “If I had been shot, would I really have died?”
System A: …
“It seems I wouldn’t have? I was too excited.”
Ji Mingxiao: ???
“Are you an intern system?” Ji Mingxiao asked. “I’ll tell you, if you were at my company, I would’ve fired you by now. But I still encourage you to keep reminding me.”
“Host, I feel like you’re just bullying me because I can’t roll my eyes,” System A said.
Ji Mingxiao’s lips curved upward.
“Lin Yuan, someone has been calling you nonstop.” Someone rushed over, carrying Ji Mingxiao’s bag.
Ji Mingxiao was taken aback for a moment and took the bag.
It was Xi Ruan.
She answered the call, and the other person’s frantic voice immediately came through.
“Are you okay?”
The voice was full of anxiety.
“I’m fine.” Ji Mingxiao smiled. “Didn’t you always say it was fine even if I died? Why are you suddenly so concerned about me now?”
Xi Ruan was stunned. She didn’t know why, but when she saw Ji Mingxiao in danger, she just freaked out.
“That’s different,” Xi Ruan insisted.
“How is it different?”
“Of course it’s different! Ugh, this is so annoying. I’m not talking to you anymore. Just be careful.”
Ji Mingxiao looked ahead and didn’t press her. “Don’t go out recently.”
“I know. I haven’t even left the villa.”
“That’s a good girl.”
Xi Ruan rolled her eyes again in annoyance. “I’m not a child.”
“Still a good girl.”
Xi Ruan pursed her lips. “Just don’t you dare die.”
“I know. How could I die?”
Xi Ruan hummed in agreement. She understood the logic, but when she saw the bullet that had shattered the light bulb, she still felt like her heart had been seized. She couldn’t breathe.
Ji Mingxiao was sent back to her dorm, and the investigation results came out that evening. The report stated the shooter was an enemy of the Lin family, jealous of Ji Mingxiao’s current success. But a closer look revealed the person was from F541 Zone.
Upon hearing the result, Ji Mingxiao sneered twice and said she also wanted to meet that person. The meeting was arranged for the next afternoon. At Ji Mingxiao’s request, the interrogation room only contained Ji Mingxiao and the person, while everyone else stood outside behind the glass.
“Do you know me?”
“Lin Yuan, who doesn’t know the daughter of General Lin?”
“You said you came from F541 Zone?” Ji Mingxiao stared into the other person’s eyes.
“Yes.”
“I’d like to ask you a few questions. Please answer me as quickly as you can.” Ji Mingxiao noticed his vigilant expression and smiled. “Don’t worry, they’re all simple questions.”
“What was F541 Zone’s original name?”
“Cloud Star.”
“Was it Xiao Ye or Xiao Cheng who died?”
“Xiao Cheng.”
“When did he die?”
“Six or seven years ago.”
“Who killed Xiao Cheng?”
The other person was stunned for a moment.
“Who were Xiao Cheng’s original subordinates?” Ji Mingxiao’s speaking speed grew faster and faster, and the person’s expression became more and more strained.
“What is the ‘Forbidden Zone,’ and where is it? When did you arrive in the Alliance? How did you get here?”
“Which major organizations currently exist in Cloud Star, and what are their leaders’ names?”
“Come on, tell me.” She slapped the table with her palm.
Ji Mingxiao stared into the other person’s eyes. “You’re not from Cloud Star. Who are you? Who sent you to kill me, and why are you impersonating someone from Cloud Star?”
Those listening outside were also stunned. Everyone standing there was a shrewd expert, and they all knew that Ji Mingxiao already had a suspect in mind. She stared at the person.
“After this, your people must have arranged for others to try and kill me, right? And you were planning to frame the people of Cloud Star for all of it.”
“That makes sense. I made Xiao Ye suffer a major loss this time, and Cloud Star already likes to oppose the Alliance. It’s normal for someone to want to attack me.” Ji Mingxiao gave a cold laugh. “Do you think I’m a fool?”
The person continued to stare at Ji Mingxiao with wide eyes.
“You should know very well that I am wary of you. You just needed to make others think I died at the hands of someone from Cloud Star.” Ji Mingxiao scoffed. She glanced at the glass. “I know he has people here, too. I didn’t think much of it before, but your actions make me truly curious if there really is something going on.”
The people standing outside the glass looked at each other. No one spoke. They tried to read her expression, but couldn’t.
“Go back and ask him for me if he’s trying to remind me to send his entire family to jail.” After saying this, Ji Mingxiao glanced at the prisoner again, pushed the door open, and walked out.
Everyone thought she would say something more, but Ji Mingxiao’s face was as normal as ever. It was as if she hadn’t said anything at all, and she even smiled at everyone.
“Thank you for your trouble.”
“It’s fine.” One person looked at Ji Mingxiao with some hesitation. “Are you still suspicious of the Zhao family?”
“Yes, I can’t help but be. All of their actions are too suspicious, aren’t they?” Ji Mingxiao shrugged, looking at the expressions on their faces. “I know your difficulties. There’s no need to keep investigating. There’s a 99% chance it’s the Zhao family anyway.”
“And don’t try to persuade me otherwise. The Zhao family’s malice toward me is far greater than anything I felt on Cloud Star.” Ji Mingxiao observed their expressions. Their expressions were all normal. She didn’t have mind-reading abilities and couldn’t tell who the problematic person was.
After Ji Mingxiao finished her speech, the scene became a little awkward for a moment. Finally, someone spoke. “Should we send someone to take you back?”
“No need. Someone is here to pick me up.” Ji Mingxiao gave a polite and knowing smile.
After Ji Mingxiao left, one person sighed with emotion.
“She doesn’t seem like a little girl still in school at all.”
“What little girl? Someone who can handle herself in that place and bring back so many people—is that a normal little girl? It’s a pity the Lin family has so few people. If they had more…”
“Compared to the Zhao family, the Lin family might have the upper hand in individual strength, but at a time like this, it’s not something one person can handle.”
“What do you mean, one person? You didn’t even see how many people came out of the Eleventh Army.”
Ji Mingxiao was unaware of the discussion behind her. As soon as she left the main gate, she spotted the car parked at the entrance. She immediately walked over and got in.
“I’ve already submitted your materials. The Zhao family did make some unusual moves before. I’ve requested leave from school for you. Go back to the villa and stay there for a few days. Don’t come out. If all goes well, this matter should be concluded soon.”
The larger the Zhao family’s influence grew, the more brazen their actions became. They had many followers, but there were also many who wanted to bring them down.
“Okay.” Ji Mingxiao nodded.
Although the Lin family’s villa wasn’t very large, it was very secure and had special defensive capabilities. Ji Mingxiao had originally wanted to invite Xi Ruan over, but she thought about it and decided against it in the end.
“I’m home.” As soon as she got home, Ji Mingxiao called Xi Ruan.
Xi Ruan must have been holding her optical brain, as she picked up almost instantly.
Xi Ruan looked Ji Mingxiao up and down. “So you’re not going out anymore?”
“Yep, I’ve left the matter to others. Where there are many people, there is conflict. I just needed to throw out a lure; there’s no need to take action myself.” Ji Mingxiao sat cross-legged on the sofa.
“So you’re alone at the villa?”
“Yes.” Ji Mingxiao nodded.
Xi Ruan stared at Ji Mingxiao for a moment, waiting for her to continue. But after the other person just said “yes,” she fell silent, and Xi Ruan was a little surprised. This audacious person actually didn’t ask her to come keep her company. She was too embarrassed to bring it up herself.
“Did you want to come over?” Ji Mingxiao asked.
“Who said I wanted to come over!” Xi Ruan gave a couple of dry coughs and glanced to the side.
“The road isn’t safe. You should just stay put.”
Xi Ruan was a little disappointed, and the corners of her mouth turned down. Silence fell between them again. Xi Ruan glanced at Ji Mingxiao, whose eyes were full of mirth. Having gotten used to Ji Mingxiao’s poker-faced, commanding demeanor recently, seeing her smile felt a little strange. Xi Ruan clutched the hem of her skirt, feeling inexplicably shy.
Ji Mingxiao watched Xi Ruan, and just watched as her ears inexplicably turned red. She chuckled softly.
“What are you laughing at?”
“You’re really something, so bossy. I can’t even laugh a little?” Ji Mingxiao raised an eyebrow.
Xi Ruan realized she was being too sensitive. She took a deep breath. “Forget about the Zhao family. What are you going to do about Xue Qingran?”
“I’m afraid it won’t be completed.” Ji Mingxiao looked out the window. “I can only see when the mission is supposed to end. But I’ll still give it a try. After the Zhao family matter is resolved, I’ll go and catch her again.”
Xi Ruan twitched her lips. “Xiao Ye doesn’t look like a normal person. Who knows what she’ll become in his hands.”
“Who cares? It has nothing to do with us.” Anyway, Ji Mingxiao couldn’t feel any sympathy or pity for someone like Xue Qingran.
“I also don’t know when I’ll be able to go out.”
“If you could go out, what would you want to do?” Ji Mingxiao asked.
Xi Ruan was silent for a few seconds, then rubbed her chin. “I don’t know. Ugh, life without a goal is so miserable.”
Ji Mingxiao lay back on the sofa, looked at Xi Ruan’s face, and reached out to poke it in the air.
“What are you doing?” Xi Ruan noticed Ji Mingxiao’s gesture.
“Haven’t seen you in a few days. You seem to have gained a bit of weight. Your face is chubbier. It just makes me want to poke it.”
Xi Ruan frowned, touched her own face, and then pinched it twice. “Nonsense.”
“You’re beautiful.”
Xi Ruan noticed the mischievous smile on Ji Mingxiao’s face and knew this person was most likely teasing her. She let out a soft huff. “I’m not talking to you anymore. Goodbye.”
“Okay. Call me if you miss me.” Ji Mingxiao said with a wide smile.
This time, Xi Ruan rolled her eyes in a very complete, exasperated way. “I won’t. Don’t dream about it.”
