The Host Has Fallen for the Second Female Lead Again - Chapter 104
Ji Mingxiao glanced at the blackboard, relieved that it was an English class.
The teacher frowned and repeated the question.
After a moment’s thought, Ji Mingxiao answered fluently, her perfect British accent surprising the whole class, which fell silent.
Even the teacher was a little astonished. Qin Wan’s grades were usually in the upper-middle range, and they’d had spoken English practice before. Everyone had heard her speak, but what accounted for such a huge change in just a short time? Originally, the English teacher had intended to tell her to pay attention, but now she just wanted to ask how she’d gotten so good.
And so, she did.
Ji Mingxiao was silent for a few seconds. “Uh… I guess I changed one word at a time. Then I practiced with British TV shows, found a tutor, and just worked hard. Diligence is the most important thing.”
She’d had foreign tutors since she was a child and had often traveled abroad, giving her an excellent language environment. She knew many languages, and if asked for more tips, she wouldn’t really know what to say.
Fortunately, the English teacher let her off the hook.
Sure enough, you can’t get distracted in class. When she sat down, she felt something tug on her pant leg, startling her again. Ji Mingxiao felt a little exhausted and put her hand down, where the paper figurine jumped onto it.
As soon as class was over, Ji Mingxiao went to the restroom.
“Did you see anything?” she asked.
“The sun’s out, so the aura is very hard to find. It would be best to come out and look again tonight,” said Paper Figurine Number One. “It definitely feels a little strange.”
Ji Mingxiao frowned. The paper figurine climbed back into her pocket.
She didn’t have many classes today. After English, Ji Mingxiao had lunch and then went to the reading room. She had brought a few books that were clearly not for others to see, so she found a secluded corner and used a talisman for lowering presence on herself. As long as she didn’t talk to anyone, no one would notice her.
She sat there until it got dark.
Honestly, many schools are rumored to be built in places with strong yin energy. With that thought in mind, walking through the dark campus made her feel cold all over. Ji Mingxiao took a deep breath. She saw a person standing on the roof of a building not too far away. She stopped, and the next second, the person leaped from the roof.
An endless wave of screams followed.
Ji Mingxiao immediately gave chase, and the small paper figurine popped out of her pocket.
“The yin energy is very heavy.”
Ji Mingxiao pinched a talisman, and the speed of her feet instantly picked up.
A crowd had already gathered. People were whispering, the word “jumped” mixed in with their murmurs. Ji Mingxiao pushed her way to the front and, after a quick look, frowned. Another person screamed.
“Isn’t that Zhong Yu, the one who went missing?” a girl cried out.
Ji Mingxiao glanced at the girl, not really understanding how she could recognize someone so bloody, mangled, and unrecognizable. Ji Mingxiao had also noticed that the person was already dead, and her body’s yin energy came in two types: one unfamiliar, and one slightly familiar. Her gaze fell on the corpse.
The next second, a change occurred. The “person” who had fallen from the top of the information building, now a mangled, unrecognizable mess, began to slowly inch forward.
“S-she’s moving!”
The scene fell silent for a few seconds before screams erupted again. The sight was more terrifying than any horror movie. A person whose head was cracked open, limbs broken, and red and white matter smeared all over the ground, who was clearly deader than dead, was still inching forward.
The three talismans in Ji Mingxiao’s hand flew out and landed directly on the “person.” They were restriction talismans, and the thing immediately stopped.
“Does that thing have something on it?”
“Talismans?”
“What is this? Did the teachers come yet?”
Ji Mingxiao looked around, took a small bottle from her pocket, and collected all the dispersed yin energy from the air. She had expected to find the girl’s lingering soul here, but there was nothing.
She frowned and turned to leave. There were so many people, and everyone was in a panic, so no one noticed what she was doing.
Ji Mingxiao clutched the bottle and walked back to her dorm, where her three roommates were already there.
“Just got back? I heard someone jumped off a building?” Lin Ge asked.
“Yeah, I saw it,” Ji Mingxiao said, rubbing her temples, looking exhausted.
“Are you okay?” The three of them immediately gathered around her.
Ji Mingxiao’s face was pale. She forced a smile and said, “It was a little scary. I need to calm down. I wish I hadn’t gone to see the commotion.”
“I saw in the group chat that it even moved?”
“Yeah,” Ji Mingxiao nodded.
“Shit, look at this picture. There are talismans on it. It’s so creepy.”
While her roommates whispered, Ji Mingxiao rubbed her temples. “I’m going to lie down for a bit.”
“Okay.”
“Wanwan, do you want to go to a temple to pray in a few days?”
“Mhm.” Ji Mingxiao nodded, climbed onto her bed, stuck a few talismans on her curtains, and took out the bottle she had just used.
The spiritual familiar, Xi Ruan, also emerged from the jade pendant and sat opposite Ji Mingxiao.
The bottle had become transparent again, and a black substance was swirling inside. Hmm, the familiar yin energy must be from this stuff, while the strange one was probably Zhong Yu’s.
She took out her phone and searched the forums for information on Zhong Yu.
Zhong Yu was a third-year archaeology student who had gone missing in K City about half a month ago. K City was in G Province, very far away. It was a four-hour plane ride.
From Ji Mingxiao’s observation, Zhong Yu had been dead for about half a month. How did she get back to the school? Ji Mingxiao looked at the bottle and had a strong feeling that Zhong Yu’s return was because of her—that someone had done this on purpose. She shook the bottle. She would need to go home tomorrow to put the stuff away.
Besides, she still didn’t know how to distinguish between sentient NPCs. What was normal, and what wasn’t? And the “hunting mission”—did that mean she had to kill them?
If it was a ghost, she could probably do it, but a human…
Even though her hands weren’t exactly clean, if a person only gained consciousness but hadn’t harmed anyone, she probably wouldn’t be able to do it. Honestly, this way of thinking wasn’t very in line with her business-like nature.
Ji Mingxiao lay down on her bed.
She scrolled through her phone again. The posts about Zhong Yu had been mostly deleted, but videos had been uploaded to Weibo and were being widely shared. Many people suspected it was a prank, but the police cars and ambulances entering and leaving the campus confirmed that it was all real.
That day, the students who had witnessed the scene did not sleep well, and neither did Ji Mingxiao.
Ji Mingxiao was given a day off because her face was too pale. Many people called in sick that day, and many went to temples first thing in the morning. The school also brought in many psychological counselors, and the bulletin boards were quickly covered with posters promoting science and discouraging belief in ghosts. Ordinarily, few people are superstitious at a university, but after seeing that scene, even an atheist would start to believe.
Ji Mingxiao took a week off. On the surface, she was resting, but in reality, she was participating in the investigation.
The Qin family had always worked with the authorities, and since the incident happened at Ji Mingxiao’s school, it was handed over to her. Usually, it would be handled by one of the elders in the family.
She went directly to the hospital. When she arrived, she saw a female police officer in uniform standing at the entrance.
“Hello, I’m Qin Wan.”
Wei Xi blinked and was silent for a few seconds. “Miss Qin, please follow me.”
Her professionalism seemed good. Apart from her initial surprise, she didn’t show any strange expressions. Ji Mingxiao never used to feel anything special when she entered a hospital, but now that she had her yin-yang eyes, the spirits floating around made her very uncomfortable. It was normal for there to be spirits—as long as they weren’t evil spirits, they usually didn’t need to be dealt with and would either enter the cycle of reincarnation or dissipate in the human world.
She didn’t show any weakness during the entire time, only occasionally glancing at an empty spot, an action that made Wei Xi standing next to her shiver.
“Can you see ghosts?”
“Yes,” Ji Mingxiao nodded.
Wei Xi shivered again. “I’ve only been working for a few days, and my worldview is already shattered.”
Ji Mingxiao smiled. “You’ll get used to it.”
“Are you really only twenty years old?”
“Yes.”
“You seem very mature.” Wei Xi’s smile became more genuine. “It’s amazing that you can handle this kind of thing on your own at twenty.”
Xi Ruan, in the jade pendant, rolled his eyes. Mature? She was clearly still a little kid.
“It’s normal. A Mystic Sect disciple should be this way.”
The two of them arrived at the morgue entrance. The body hadn’t been transported back to the police station yet, or more accurately, for the time being, no one dared to touch it. No one dared to remove the talismans from it either.
“Miss Qin.”
“Officer Wang,” Ji Mingxiao nodded at him.
They didn’t have much to talk about. Ji Mingxiao casually tore off the talismans and scanned the body. “It’s just a pile of dead meat now. But, she went missing in K City. How did a person who has been dead for more than ten days get here?”
They all looked at each other.
“More than ten days?”
“Yes, more than ten days,” Ji Mingxiao nodded.
“You can tell that?”
“You have your methods, and we have ours.”
Ji Mingxiao tapped the table. “She probably went up to the roof herself, didn’t she?”
“Yes, we’ve checked the surveillance footage. She walked up the stairs herself. She came in through the back door. Since it was nighttime and there weren’t many people around, no one saw her.”
A corpse that had been dead for more than ten days walked all the way to the top floor and jumped. Then, after jumping, it even crawled a few steps forward. No matter how you looked at it, it was terrifying.
The temperature in the morgue was already low, but now it felt even colder.
“Has anything been going on in K City recently?” Ji Mingxiao asked.
“There is one thing, but we don’t know if it’s related.”
