- The Honest Man Was Targeted by His Ex-Boyfriend's Alpha Brother
- Chapter 13 - Team Building. What Are You Doing?
The Director granted Chen Wang a week of paid leave, but he could not stay idle. Within two days, he returned to the hospital, only to find himself just in time for a two-day, one-night team-building event.
Rumor had it that the “more money than brains” investors had approved the budget. What was originally supposed to be a simple farmhouse BBQ had been upgraded into a luxury mountain resort getaway.
Having grown up in the slums, Chen Wang had heard of spring and autumn field trips since he was a child, but he had only ever seen them in books. This was his first time experiencing a formal collective team-building activity that involved staying overnight.
His “elementary student field trip syndrome” kicked in instantly. The day before the trip, he was incredibly hyperactive. He made a special trip to the supermarket and the pharmacy to stock up. That night, he stared wide-eyed at his hiking backpack and did not fall asleep until very late.
“Wow, Dr. Chen,” his colleague Hao Pingfan remarked.
The next day on the bus, Hao Pingfan sat in the back row and clicked his tongue in wonder while swiping a pack of vanilla biscuits from him. “Are you a nursemaid? Do you really need to bring this many medicines?”
“You never know when there might be an accident!” Chen Wang reclaimed his bag, looking slightly self-conscious.
He did not know much about what was needed for an overnight stay. He turned his handsome face away and said good-naturedly, “It is better to be safe than sorry.”
The vehicle slowly started moving. Xiao Han, the colleague sitting next to Hao Pingfan, leaned back and commented, “Honestly, at first, I thought a doctor as handsome, young, and cold as Dr. Chen would be hard to get along with. I did not expect that once you get to know him in private, he is totally a ‘Mommy’ type.”
“I wonder which Omega will get lucky with him in the future?”
“Stop teasing me,” Chen Wang replied. His ears turned slightly red from their banter, and he cleared his throat. “Why would an Omega like a Beta like me?”
“So, does that mean you like Alphas?”
Chen Wang rejected the idea decisively. “Of course not.”
Xiao Han said meaningfully, “Oh, it looks like the Betas have a chance then.”
As soon as she said this, the other Betas on the bus pricked up their ears, their interest piqued. Hao Pingfan had just finished mocking Chen Wang for bringing too many things, but only twenty minutes into the drive, his face turned deathly pale. He turned to Chen Wang for motion sickness pills and patches. “Thank you, Godfather!”
Before the pill could even reach his mouth, the bus braked hard. With a loud sound, Hao Pingfan threw up.
Chen Wang was speechless.
Soon, the Director brought someone onto the bus. He was a tall man with a dark, cold, and gloomy aura. He wore a beanie and a leather jacket paired with a minimalist, high-end platinum necklace. It was a youthful yet casual look. His amber-gold eyes swept lazily around the bus, but no one seemed to catch his interest.
Who else could it be but Hua Yunlian? Chen Wang’s entire body went stiff. He silently closed his eyes and pretended to nap.
The Director gave an introduction, revealing that the investor was none other than the young President Hua of the Hua Group. The curious and excited chatter on the bus vanished instantly. The Betas shrunk back like frightened birds. Their attitudes became incredibly respectful for fear of offending him with a single wrong word.
More than half of the bus had been left empty, specifically reserved for the staff from the President’s Office. Soon, seven or eight more people boarded. Coming from a different industry, their aura was starkly different from the hospital staff.
Hua Yunlian did not stand on ceremony. He sat directly next to the “sleeping” Chen Wang. The staff from the President’s Office naturally noticed this and began to whisper.
“Aren’t there plenty of seats left? Why is President Hua sitting with the people from the Children’s Hospital?”
“Do not try to guess Young President Hua’s thoughts. He has been in a foul mood lately, not even showing up for work. Coming to this team-building event is basically a royal visit in disguise. Just perform well!”
The receptionist nurse from the Children’s Hospital was incredibly excited. She whispered to her friend, “Hey, the person who came looking for Dr. Chen that day was the second son of the Hua Group! I knew Dr. Chen had to be a rich second-generation youth as well, especially having such a handsome friend!”
Secretary Mary smiled but said nothing.
Talking to Hua Yunlian was far too stressful, so Chen Wang kept up the facade of sleeping. Unexpectedly, the temperature on the bus was comfortable, and the white noise of his colleagues’ voices soon lulled him into a real sleep.
Beneath the brim of his hat, a cold gaze fell gently on Chen Wang’s face. Despite having just gone through the major ordeal of a kidnapping, one man stayed silent while the other slept. They truly looked like strangers who had met by chance.
Chen Wang.
In Hua Yunlian’s heart, Chen Wang was a man with a slight commoner vibe and a very poor memory. He was not like this when they were children.
After Hua Yunlian mutated into a monster, he was thrown into a remote, nearly abandoned zoo in the slums. At that time, his condition had just barely stabilized. He was a leopard cub that had not even been fully weaned. A ten-year-old child did not know how to turn back into a human. He could only live in the zoo as a leopard cub, despondent all day long. He was neither a true animal nor able to return to being a person. This painful state was worse than death.
This continued until a thin, frail youth appeared. He fed him, groomed his fur, gave him special treats, and occasionally told him bedtime stories. He treated the fierce little leopard entirely like a kitten under his careful devotion.
Hua Yunlian still remembered that the story Chen Wang told repeatedly was Beauty and the Beast. He loved listening to it and still reminisced about it even now. Chen Wang became his hope for every day. The first hug he ever received came from him, and it was so warm.
Alphas were naturally competitive and cruel creatures. Almost everyone in the Hua Group was an Alpha. Because of this, the pursuit of power and excellence became the lifelong goal of the family head, Hua Hongfei.
The illegitimate son, Hua Yunlian, was his experiment. Normal humans enter a differentiation period between the ages of fifteen and eighteen to determine their gender. However, because of the genetic experiments, Hua Yunlian mutated into a monster at ten and was abandoned in the zoo for three whole years. One day, when he was thirteen, he unexpectedly differentiated.
The forced maturation made him the only S-rank Alpha in the family. His pheromone was Damascus Rose. As a side effect, he would periodically revert to a leopard at irregular times every month.
He had been unloved since birth and had lived as an animal for several years. When Hua Hongfei brought him home with great fanfare, he had almost forgotten human language and habits. He had always been a freak. However, the success of the experiment made his biological father value him immensely. From then on, Hua Yunlian was treated as the legitimate heir of the Hua family. No one dared to mention that he was illegitimate or that his mother was a prostitute.
Everything flipped. He became the powerful second young master of the Hua Group. In high school, Hua Yunlian met Chen Wang again. Chen Wang had become his senior. He was the only scholarship student from the slums who had tested into the school. He was the center of attention, shining brightly, and always keeping his chin up with stubborn pride.
Unfortunately, Hua Yunlian was not good at speaking then. He refused to communicate with anyone, literally lacking a grasp of human language. Furthermore, he did not understand human emotions. He simply followed Chen Wang around with the persistence of an animal recognizing its master, pretending to run into him by accident every day.
Several times, he wanted to change back into his leopard form to pounce on him and lick his face, but at that time, Hua Yunlian could not even control his ears and tail.
Later, like the boy in the stories who was rendered speechless by a witch’s poison, he witnessed his most hated older brother in the house brazenly kissing the person he loved most. When Chen Wang was with Hua Jingchen, his expression would occasionally look unnatural. This mutual attraction seemed to allow no room for outsiders.
Hua Yunlian felt as if he had been struck by lightning. His world collapsed. Consequently, when the teenage Chen Wang came to the back garden and greeted him warmly, Hua Yunlian bit him viciously. Grievance, questioning, resentment, hatred, and possessiveness all pierced through Chen Wang’s skin at once.
Hua Yunlian lowered his eyes blankly, staring dizzily at Chen Wang’s sleeping profile. If Chen Wang saw his leopard form again, he surely would not recognize him. What would his expression be? Would he be like those Omegas who throw themselves at him, only to lose their minds and flee in terror at the slightest glimpse of his mutated arm?
His fingertips accidentally brushed against Chen Wang’s wrist. Around the wrist bone, there were still faint tooth marks from years ago. They had faded but would never disappear, like a unique tattoo.
As they passed through the shade of the trees, sunlight pierced down. Chen Wang frowned uncomfortably. Hua Yunlian instinctively raised his hand to block it or draw the curtain for him, but as soon as his hand went up, he forced it back down.
Let him bake!
The moment Chen Wang left his place, he went to have a secret meeting with some fiancé. Even after being kidnapped, he still needed Hua Yunlian to save the day. It was preposterous. Chen Wang was clearly vain, trying to build a low-key rich second-generation persona in his social circle and among colleagues, yet even though Hua Yunlian was supporting him, Chen Wang never lowered his head to ask for anything.
The more Hua Yunlian thought about it, the more he felt Chen Wang was being difficult by specifically targeting him. He would rather chase after that pathetic Li Yingzhuo than take the initiative to please him. It was truly preposterous.
“Idiot,” Hua Yunlian commented coldly.
Chen Wang did not know how long he had been asleep. When the vehicle finally came to a stop and the noisy voices of his colleagues rose around him, he sat up straight and yawned.
“Hmm?” He wondered why the right side of his body was completely numb. It felt awful. Turning his head, he saw that Hua Yunlian had deliberately sat very low and was sleeping soundly, using Chen Wang’s body to block the sun and using him as a human pillow. The moment he moved slightly, the young Master Hua let out a disgruntled grunt and leaned in even closer.
Chen Wang was fuming. He stood up abruptly and shouted to his colleagues, “Off the bus! We are finally here!”
There was a loud thump as Hua Yunlian was dumped onto the seat. Waking up, his handsome face was full of confusion. Chen Wang had already stepped over him and strode off the bus.
As expected of a resort, the scenery was pleasant and the air was fresh.
“Full recovery!” Chen Wang stretched lazily, feeling exceptionally good. Before he could finish his sentence, a heavy coat was thrown over his head, and his vision went black. “ied.”
He scrambled to pull it off. It was a black, biker-style leather jacket. Immediately after, a beanie was tossed at him. Hua Yunlian felt hot. He casually ran his fingers through his light chestnut hair, creating a relaxed, swept-back look that was effortlessly handsome.
Chen Wang was annoyed. “What are you doing? You are a grown man. Do you not have hands?”
“Are you unhappy being a coat rack?” Hua Yunlian patted his shoulder as he walked past, laughing mischievously. “Do you need me to make you feel happy instead?”
Chen Wang choked on his words, guiltily glancing around. Fortunately, no one was paying attention to them.
“I will be the rack,” he muttered.
This man was capable of anything. It was better not to provoke him while all his colleagues were around. Chen Wang looked down at the luxury brand logo on the jacket and swallowed. Taking advantage of the moment when everyone scattered for free time, he quietly put on the jacket and hat. He checked himself in a reflective surface. He planned to take a few photos, block Hua Yunlian later, and then post them to his social feed.
Clothes make the man, after all. Maintaining his physique and appearance had always been a necessity for Chen Wang. Having endured so many cold stares, he understood the soft currency of society. Honestly, besides suits, he really liked this kind of biker gear. If he had the chance…
“Darling!” Halfway through his daydream, an Omega with a soft, delicate body suddenly hugged him from behind. A sweet, weak voice coaxed him, “I missed you so much. I know I was wrong. Please forgive me.”
In his entire life, Chen Wang had never been hugged so firmly by an Omega. His hands stayed frozen in the air. His fair, handsome face instantly turned as red as a cooked shrimp, and his brain stalled.
“How else should I compensate you, baby?” the Omega continued to act spoiled.
Colleagues carrying luggage and the Director slowly walked by, their expressions just as stunned as Chen Wang’s.
Hua Yunlian walked back just in time to see this scene. His face darkened instantly.
“What are you doing?”
