The Heartless Omega: I Only Want My Daughter - Chapter 8
“It’s fine,” Pei Zhiyun said, turning away to avoid the subject.
She had taken care of things by herself for so long that there was nothing left to say; as long as Little Doubao was happy and healthy, that was all that mattered.
Wen Ying stood in silent thought for a moment. She stepped forward behind Pei Zhiyun, opened her arms, and gently pulled her into an embrace, resting her forehead against Pei Zhiyun’s shoulder.
Pei Zhiyun’s instinctive reaction was to grab Wen Ying’s hands to pull them away.
Suddenly, Wen Ying spoke: “When you divorced me back then, I wonder if it was because I failed to take good care of you during your pregnancy, leaving you with resentment. If that is the case, I apologize to you. I am sorry, My Lady, I…”
“Enough,” Pei Zhiyun interrupted, cutting her off and removing the hands wrapped around her waist. “There’s no need to mention that again. Just focus on the present.”
Wen Ying was forced to drop her hands. “…Alright.”
Having clarified Wen Ying’s background story, Pei Zhiyun replied to Zou Jing’s message that evening, confirming that she would participate in the parenting show.
Zou Jing had assumed Pei Zhiyun would decline; she had even pre-written her polite refusal to the director. When she received the message that night, she almost thought she was seeing things. It seemed that no matter how cold a woman appeared, she would always soften once she had a child.
She was quite curious to see how this “partner” of hers would behave on the show.
As soon as Pei Zhiyun agreed, Zou Jing contacted the production team. The crew was so excited they began arranging work that very night—drafting contracts, negotiating performance fees, planning content, and reaching out to other potential guests.
During the pre-production phase, Pei Zhiyun spent her free time at home teaching Wen Ying modern knowledge. For the most part, Pei Zhiyun only had to say something once and Wen Ying would understand. Her mind was like a computer; once information was stored, she remembered it perfectly. This was a definite plus.
Wen Ying gradually adapted to life in this era. She began learning to cook, clean, and take care of Little Doubao. Occasionally, she would join the two of them for a walk downstairs in the evening.
A month later, the production team finalized the cast and prepared to shoot promotional photos.
On Tuesday morning, the three of them woke up early. After Pei Zhiyun got up and washed, she went to the kitchen to make breakfast. She then woke Little Doubao, who in turn woke Wen Ying. The family ate breakfast quietly at the dining table.
Pei Zhiyun told them, “We are going to take promotional photos today. You two don’t have any experience, so once we get to the studio, follow me the whole time. You are absolutely not allowed to run around.”
Little Doubao held her glass with both hands and took a sip of milk, leaving a white mustache on her upper lip. She set the glass down and said, “Mama, I’m a little nervous.”
“It’s okay, I’ll be there. The staff are also very nice, so don’t worry too much. If you feel uncomfortable, tell me after the shoot. You aren’t allowed to throw tantrums during the filming, understood?” Pei Zhiyun cautioned her.
Little Doubao nodded. “I understand. Don’t worry, Mommy. I will definitely work hard on the shoot and won’t cause you any trouble.”
“Mhm.” Pei Zhiyun was satisfied with that answer.
She then looked at Wen Ying and gave her a similar warning: “When we get to the set, hold Little Doubao’s hand. Don’t wander off, and don’t touch things randomly.”
Wen Ying: “Alright.”
After finishing the meal, Pei Zhiyun went to change. Wen Ying gathered the dishes for the three of them and took them to the kitchen to wash.
Little Doubao was busy wiping the table in the living room.
“Pei Lecheng, come here and change,” Pei Zhiyun called.
Little Doubao put down the tablet she was playing with and pattered over to Pei Zhiyun’s dressing room. A moment later, she emerged wearing a beautiful pair of blue overalls with her hair tied in two adorable pigtails. She looked lovely.
Wen Ying finished her work and came out of the kitchen. Seeing the adorable Little Doubao, she couldn’t help but lean over and pick her up. “You look very cute.”
“Thank you, Mama.” Little Doubao hugged Wen Ying and gave her a kiss.
Pei Zhiyun opened the bedroom door just in time to see this scene. She called out, “Wen Ying, you come in and change, too.”
“Coming.” Wen Ying set Little Doubao down and walked over.
Today would be the first time the family appeared before the public since the hot search incident, so Pei Zhiyun wanted to leave a good impression—especially regarding Wen Ying.
As Wen Ying entered the walk-in closet, Pei Zhiyun held up the clothes she had pre-selected: a white button-down shirt, blue jeans, and white sneakers. It was a simple, comfortable combination that would also be easy to change out of once they reached the set.
“Do you know how to put these on?” Pei Zhiyun asked, looking up.
Wen Ying reached out to take them. “I do.”
Pei Zhiyun had already taught her a great deal over the past month.
“Good.” Pei Zhiyun let go, leaving the clothes in Wen Ying’s arms, and walked out of the closet.
Back in the bedroom, Pei Zhiyun leaned over the bed to check her WeChat. Sister Zou had sent several messages saying they would arrive in about ten minutes.
Pei Zhiyun replied: Okay.
After replying, she put down her phone and left the bedroom. She intended to clear the dining table, but to her surprise, the dishes were already gone and the table was spotless. Little Doubao was busy moving the toys she had taken out earlier back into the playroom.
“Mommy, are we leaving?” Little Doubao asked as she came out of the playroom, seeing Pei Zhiyun standing by the table.
Pei Zhiyun chuckled. “Ten minutes.”
“Okay.” Little Doubao went to the sofa, picked up her tablet, and resumed watching Peppa Pig.
Pei Zhiyun stood there and surveyed the room. Her gaze gradually softened. When Little Doubao was very small, the house had been a mess everywhere—diapers, strollers, pacifiers, breast pumps, and so on. She used to have to rush to clean everything up whenever the baby fell asleep.
She had thought about hiring a live-in nanny, but she couldn’t bring herself to trust anyone else completely. Instead, she had stopped working to stay home and had a cleaner come once every three days.
As Little Doubao grew, the house became less chaotic, but things were still scattered here and there, requiring a cleaner to come and organize them.
Since Wen Ying’s arrival, everything had become orderly. Dishes were no longer left overnight. Clothes thrown in the laundry basket didn’t sit for days before being washed. Toys and the stroller were never left lying around in the living room to be tripped over in the dark.
These changes were good, but…
Thud.
A sound came from behind her.
Pei Zhiyun turned instinctively. Wen Ying had accidentally kicked the door. She was bent over, clutching her shin and staggering out with a grimace. When she looked up and saw Pei Zhiyun standing there, she immediately wiped the expression from her face and walked over normally.
Wen Ying was quite tall, about 175cm (5’9″), with a slender frame. Her hair was shoulder-length, and she looked fresh and comfortable in the outfit.
In the original book, Wen Ying was described as one of the four great beauties of the capital. Her appearance was indeed striking—a perfect balance between bold and delicate features, with a high bridge to her nose and a bright smile.
“Is this okay?” Wen Ying asked cautiously as she reached Pei Zhiyun, worried she wouldn’t be satisfied.
Pei Zhiyun took a step forward. She reached out to undo the top button of Wen Ying’s collar, pulling the lapels slightly to the sides. Then, she took Wen Ying’s sleeves, unbuttoned them, and rolled them up to her forearms. She did the same for the other arm.
“Yes,” Pei Zhiyun said, finally satisfied.
But it was still missing something.
Pei Zhiyun led Wen Ying back into the room and had her sit at the vanity in the dressing room. She picked up a powder puff and an eyebrow pencil to give Wen Ying some simple makeup.
The clothes Wen Ying was wearing didn’t suit heavy makeup, so Pei Zhiyun kept it light. She touched up the ends of her eyebrows, curled her lashes, and applied a lipstick that was close to her natural lip color.
When she was finished, Pei Zhiyun stood back a couple of steps to look. Not bad; she wouldn’t look too washed out on camera.
Ring ring ring.
Pei Zhiyun’s phone was ringing in the other room. It was likely Sister Zou.
Pei Zhiyun put the makeup back in its place and said to Wen Ying, “Go change your shoes. Take the bags and wait for me at the door with Little Doubao. We’re heading down.”
“Alright.” Wen Ying gently pushed back her chair and stood up.
Pei Zhiyun followed her out and answered the ringing phone. “Hello, Sister Zou.”
Zou Jing: “We’re almost there. Come on down.”
“Okay.” The call ended.
Pei Zhiyun gripped her phone and went to the closet to put on the black stiletto heels she had prepared. Once they were on, she put her phone in her bag and headed out.
“Let’s go,” Pei Zhiyun said.
Wen Ying held Little Doubao’s hand and stepped forward to open the door. She waited for the child to exit before following behind.
The two of them stood by the door waiting for Pei Zhiyun.
Pei Zhiyun was about to step out, but she suddenly doubled back to check all the appliances in the house. After confirming everything was turned off, she came out, closed the door, and pressed the elevator button.
Since it was during work hours, the elevator was empty. When they stepped out of the elevator, Pei Zhiyun had them both put on masks and hats.
Then, Wen Ying picked up Little Doubao and walked toward the community entrance.
“Zhiyun.” Zou Jing saw them and walked over. Her gaze instinctively landed on Wen Ying, who was carrying the child.
After the previous hot search, she had been curious about who could make Pei Zhiyun willing to have a child. However, knowing Pei Zhiyun was very private, she hadn’t pried. She figured that since Zhiyun was joining ‘Mommy and Me,’ there would be plenty of opportunities to meet her.
Seeing her for the first time today, she looked quite impressive.
Even with the mask and hat, her figure was excellent—golden proportions—and her aura was clean and fresh in the white shirt. Her eyes were beautiful. She was not only carrying Little Doubao but also a large bag, suggesting she was someone who knew how to take care of others. Still, Zou Jing was curious to see the face beneath the mask.
“Sister Zou,” Pei Zhiyun greeted.
Zou Jing snapped out of it, nodded, and opened the car door. “Get in. We’re heading straight to the set.”
“Mhm.” Pei Zhiyun didn’t get in first. Instead, she took the heavy bag from Wen Ying’s arm and let Wen Ying and Little Doubao get in the back seat first.
As they passed Zou Jing, they greeted her.
“Hello, Auntie Zou.”
“Sister Zou Jing.”
Wen Ying nodded to her, her voice clear and pleasant.
Zou Jing smiled and nodded. “Hello, Little Doubao. Hello, Teacher Wen.”
Pei Zhiyun had told Zou Jing Wen Ying’s name when discussing the work, so she knew how to address her.
